People say Curry is great because of his range. But I think he is truly great because of his selflessness. His ego is so secure that he never has to "prove" himself. Just look at the years when KD was in the Warriors.
Totally agree...I'm gonna expose myself for a second here. I played in the post in highschool. We faced a team who decided they would double me with both post guys whenever the ball got sent in to me. If I caught the ball in the high post...this literally meant my teammate on the low block was left wide open. I made that pass 3-4 times... But then I got annoyed... I was the leading scorer... I hadn't got a shot up in the game yet. So with my big ass highschool ego I caught the ball and immediately rose up and took the shot before the second defender could come over. Missed the shot. Then the rest of the game then only soft doubled me. If I got the ball on the low block they would send someone at me but they completely stopped doubling me where they would send the other big at me no matter what. Then it hit me...they scripted the whole game plan to make me do that. They were gonna do it until I got frustrated and made a selfish play. Realizing that messed with my head way more than them actually executing that plan... The fact that, as their superstar player, Curry was fine with standing in the corner and doing nothing is effing amazing.
This was probs the most relaxing game Curry had, lol. Just standing there and still winning - all because the opposing team was scared of his mere presence. 😂😂😂

2008 was my Freshman year at Loyola, I still talk about this game with my friends to this day. Jimmy Patsos is a legend who was best known for getting ejected and throwing his tie into the stands. After the game, I heard he was quoted in saying something like "I'm a basketball historian, are people going to remember we lost by 30, or held an all time great to 0 points?"

This is what I love about Steph. He wasn't phased, he wasn't angry or unhappy that he couldn't score. He was just happy he helped his team win, by any means necessary. Just like in game 5.

His scoring tandems and highlight plays are fantastic in their own way by showing how dominant he is as a player, but this story speaks volume to his character since it shows how he truly prioritizes winning over everything else and is willing to sacrifice his numbers if it means his team will have a better chance to win.

great players hyper perform when their team needs them most. Legendary players sacrifice for the team when even hyper performance is not enough. in team sport, its awesome to win but there is no glory in winning alone when your team losses. its amazing that Steph figured this out in college! most pros will not figure this out their whole lives!

The Loyola head coach, Jimmy Patsos, actually took Loyola to the tournament a few years later (2012). A big feat, they’ve only made it like once in the last 25 years. He was assistant under Gary Williams (an underrated great IMHO) at Maryland during the 2002 national championship. Patsos certainly had some wild quotes as a head coach. I think he was a DC bartender for years before coaching.
I remember a team did this to us in highschool to stop our top Guard Arike Ogunbowale scoring. The second half we had her stand at half court and 4v3 them for an entire quarter before they gave up 😂😂😂
Opposing teams made Steph Curry a magnet pulling everybody to guard him leaving his teammates free to shoot. Curry cannot be stopped scoring for this guy is a gifted basketball player.

You would have to have some superb defensive players to be able to hold off a 3v4, not to mention be able to rebound still with one person permanently not boxed out
This happened to me when I was playing this year in Belgium… teams heard I was averaging 30ppg and so from the opening tip, I was being face guarded with a hand in my face while walking up the court… the entire game a hand in my face wherever I was. Anytime I got the ball it was immediate double team, I literally felt like Steph curry.
5:34 and 5:50 of this video is what separates Steph from all the greats. To know ones power and do what is right for the team to win. This is who he was then, and still who he is today. For this, we (any fan of basketball, ever) say thank you.
I think the strategy would've worked better if they only kept the double on curry for the beginning of the game, so he didn't get a good start. Then his teammates would be more relaxed because they're not being guarded as much. Then suddenly, switch back to man to man. If Curry gets hot, rinse and repeat.
I see that people have been recognizing Steph's greatness even when he was in high school but they are having a hard time acknowledging it.... I wonder why...
I have scenes games that show especially in the 2018 and 2019 games. up to five people surrounding Steph one time. I’ve never seen any other superstars receive two defenders during most of a game let alone 5 defenders at any time. How good of a scorer would they be if those odds were against them. I hope you can find those videos and share them.
I coached in the Mississippi private school leagues back in the '90s. We had a point guard whose penetration ability was close to unstoppable at that level. He ended up playing college at Southeastern Louisiana. He was double teamed all game once. He was not a great outside shooter. I put him in one of the low corners - sometimes even a high corner to clear the double team from the action. The defenders stayed with him. We ran 4 against 3 always starting the action with a ball screen on the foul line defender. Screener rolled to the basket to draw/step inside one baseline defender while the freed ballhandler penetrated to draw the other baseline defender. The other two players either made basket cuts, stepped out away from the lane to spot up for 12 footers,' or slid along the perimeter on the ball side of the court with the dribble penetrator. The triangle and two alignment simply could not cover the actions. The offense worked extremely well.
Kind of makes me laugh as I recall my high school team doing this for a particularly good opponent in high school. Funny thing was it contributed to a win for us. Was and is a great memory to date.

Can't even shade them for this tactic because currently it isn't uncommon to see Steph with a consistent minimum double team. We have seen him with double, triple, and quadruple team situations but it's gotten so ridiculous that he had been quintuple teamed sometimes 😂🤷🏾♀️ the man is built different 🦅
Stephen Curry is undoubtedly an all-time great basketball player, mostly due to his ability to do quite literally anything you could ask somebody to do on offense, allowing him to apply constant pressure to opposing defenses!
Steph is the greatest 3 shooter of all time and he probably always will be from now on. Wilt Chamberlain used to have all 5 defenders collapse in on him just so he could still score anyways. I believe Wilt is the greatest player ever, but I feel very lucky to actually be alive to see the greatest 3 shooter of all time, and to see him take his mantle as such along with other greats like Wilt Chamberlain, Russel, Robertson, Kareem, Magic, Dr. J, Jordan, Kobe, and others is epic.
Maybe the coach set a pace and figured “if we let Steph play he’ll score 4.2 points a minute, if we play 3 on 4 we’ll give up 3.8 points a minute” and figured it couldn’t be worse

I remember a team did this to us in highschool to stop our top Guard Arike Ogunbowale scoring. The second half we had her stand at half court and 4v3 them for an entire quarter before they gave up 😂😂😂
Opposing teams made Steph Curry a magnet pulling everybody to guard him leaving his teammates free to shoot. Curry cannot be stopped scoring for this guy is a gifted basketball player.

You would have to have some superb defensive players to be able to hold off a 3v4, not to mention be able to rebound still with one person permanently not boxed out

This happened to me when I was playing this year in Belgium… teams heard I was averaging 30ppg and so from the opening tip, I was being face guarded with a hand in my face while walking up the court… the entire game a hand in my face wherever I was. Anytime I got the ball it was immediate double team, I literally felt like Steph curry.
More than a decade later it's still he same, teams now triple or even quadruple team him. He puts the fear of God in teams

I think the strategy would've worked better if they only kept the double on curry for the beginning of the game, so he didn't get a good start. Then his teammates would be more relaxed because they're not being guarded as much. Then suddenly, switch back to man to man. If Curry gets hot, rinse and repeat.

I have scenes games that show especially in the 2018 and 2019 games. up to five people surrounding Steph one time. I’ve never seen any other superstars receive two defenders during most of a game let alone 5 defenders at any time. How good of a scorer would they be if those odds were against them. I coached in the Mississippi private school leagues back in the '90s. We had a point guard whose penetration ability was close to unstoppable at that level. He ended up playing college at Southeastern Louisiana. He was double teamed all game once. He was not a great outside shooter. I put him in one of the low corners - sometimes even a high corner to clear the double team from the action. The defenders stayed with him.
We ran 4 against 3 always starting the action with a ball screen on the foul line defender. Screener rolled to the basket to draw/step inside one baseline defender while the freed ballhandler penetrated to draw the other baseline defender. The other two players either made basket cuts, stepped out away from the lane to spot up for 12 footers,' or slid along the perimeter on the ball side of the court with the dribble penetrator. The triangle and two alignment simply could not cover the actions. The offense worked extremely well.
Kind of makes me laugh as I recall my high school team doing this for a particularly good opponent in high school. Funny thing was it contributed to a win for us. Was and is a great memory to date.

Can't even shade them for this tactic because currently it isn't uncommon to see Steph with a consistent minimum double team. We have seen him with double, triple, and quadruple team situations but it's gotten so ridiculous that he had been quintuple teamed sometimes 😂🤷🏾♀️ the man is built different 🦅

Stephen Curry is undoubtedly an all-time great basketball player, mostly due to his ability to do quite literally anything you could ask somebody to do on offense, allowing him to apply constant pressure to opposing defenses!
Steph is the greatest 3 shooter of all time and he probably always will be from now on. Wilt Chamberlain used to have all 5 defenders collapse in on him just so he could still score anyways. I believe Wilt is the greatest player ever, but I feel very lucky to actually be alive to see the greatest 3 shooter of all time, and to see him take his mantle as such along with other greats like Wilt Chamberlain, Russel, Robertson, Kareem, Magic, Dr. J, Jordan, Kobe, and others is epic.
For me, wilt was great but he was also taller than most people. Would he dominate if he was of average height?
