Ice made $millions$ on this tune, even when he was forced to sign. He rehabs homes now and is doing real well. It's so weird that Ice get more love and respect now than he ever did. He's no Eminem but he was one of the first white guy to break into rap after the Beastie Boys and did it well IMO.

I heard this song first on the radio in 1990 I think on a show called "open house party". It was some DJ in LA who had a national show on Saturday nights and he played hit songs and occasionally introduced new songs / artists. This song was so catchy I was like yo, got to go drop $17 on that CD....so I did. Now I'm an old dude and my kids know I jam this in my car with the banging system and subwoofers and it makes everyone smile 😊

I'm glad people are finally acknowledging his talent, because back in the day, his overnight rise to superstardom came at a high price. He was mocked and he constantly had to defend himself from harsh criticism.

Glad you two can appreciate a rap song that is over 30 years old. It stills holds up. The hook was a sample from the band Queen song PRESSURE with singing on that song by Freddy Mercury and guest singer David Bowie. Vanilla Ice was so big back then that he got a backlash of hate. He could have pushed through if he had been able to create some more hit songs like Eminem did years later. Old school rap (Vanilla Ice and RUN DMC) was a more innocent time. The TV show SNL did a great skit on some sweet old rappers having a sing-off with some hard-core new rappers. Look it up on yt.
The tv show IN LIVING COLOR did a great parody of this song starring Jim Carey. It is also on yt.
Vanilla Ice came out in the MC Hammer era when rap took on the mantle entertainment. Some rappers didn't take to rap becoming mainstream entertainment for Hollywood. It didn't reflect the realities dark hip hop rap brought to mind that were happening in the hood. A rap group called 3rd Bass really despised Vanilla Ice because he wasn't a real rapper in the sense of the hood. 3rd Bass created a rap Jam called "Pop Called the Weasle" as a message to V.I. that real rap was not entertainment during that time. Check out that jam if you want to hear how these rappers viewed Vanilla Ice. Truth is he is an icon of that era of rap. He put out a jam that is still a favorite and a reminder of the fun elements of hip hop.
That beat is “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie. Vanilla Ice lost a lot of money after they sued him for not giving them writing credit on the song.
At the moment, Van owns the exclusive rights to the song after purchasing the song from Bowie and Queen. So, does Queen get royalties from Ice Ice Baby? Queen does not receive a share of the royalties.
After the case was settled in court, Queen and Bowie received a share of royalties. However, Vanilla Ice opted to pay $4 million to purchase the publishing rights to Under Pressure. This was cheaper than continuing to have to pay royalties.

Vanilla ice has never owned the rights to Under Pressure, he lied twice about the ownership of it. Queen took him to court, they won and he had to pay royalties.

Folks tried to throw shade at Vanilla ICE, claiming he jacked a beat, but yo, sampling been around for ages. Truth is, they saw mad millions rolling in and everybody was out to take him down just to grab a piece of that fortune.
He should have asked permission. Queen was doing okay without his money...lol
This is back in the day when rap was fun and you danced to it it the clubs. Vanilla Ice was awesome but so many people left him behind because of his race in every group.

He gave them credit, he just didnt get their permission. So, when they sued him, he offered to buy the rights to the song Under Pressure and they sold it to him.

You know what happened to him with the rights to this song right?? This came straight from his mouth. He was in LA and Suge Knight came to his hotel and TOLD him he wanted the rights to Ice Ice Baby. WANTED, NOT TO BUY, TO TAKE. He said he "knew what would happen" so he GAVE him the rights to his song. Free and clear. He did say that Suge did NOT hang him upside down from the balcony, but he was still scared so he signed it away. Pretty sad. Seems like Suge is right where he deserves to be 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Grew up right at that time, what a great song. Mix in the david bowie/freddie mercury baseline ... Good stuff.. Dancing, the beat, actually the whole scene. They were hard on ICE back in the day. Look up the " vanilla ice project" .. he has done well for himself and is a good guy. Remodels homes then flips them. Also, they tried to say he pulled from trick who was in miami at the time. This video is 1990 , trick didnt come out with an album till 1996. You two are fantastic, great vibe and energy. Easy sub!!!

Fun tidbit: This song was released about a month after MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." Both songs exploded, they were the two most popular songs in the industry at the time. MC Hammer wanted to capitalize on their popularity, so he tried to create a "feud" with Ice. Ice was trying to establish himself apart from the rest of the rappers, who - save for the Beastie Boys - were almost entirely black. So he didn't want a "white rapper vs. black rapper" feud, he didn't think it was good for what he was aiming for.
So Hammer kept egging him on, pretending to criticize Ice's dancing, his rap style, called him a poser, you name it. It wasn't real, just a publicity ploy, but he sold it HARD. Ice showed up at a club one night to hang out with some friends. About an hour in, Hammer showed up. The crowd went nuts, hollering for them to dance on stage. Hammer was game, Ice wanted to chill in his booth and drink. The crowd got rowdy and started booing Ice for not taking the bait. Finally, Ice took the bait. He wasn't happy, he just wanted to relax. But he goes up on stage, music starts playing, and Hammer starts freestyling. Ice stands there for a minute, watching. Hammer does some move, Ice pointed at him and did the same move, but bigger. For the next five minutes or so, Ice and Hammer freestyle on each other until Ice starts dancing double time, doing twice the steps Hammer was doing to the same music. Hammer tried to speed up, and he stumbled. Ice stepped right up to him and spun a half-dozen times, circling around Hammer, and then heads off stage, dancing the whole way. The crowd went insane, Hammer is smiling, he doesn't care, he's getting exactly the publicity he wants, but the crowd is rowdy with taunting that he got his butt kicked by Vanilla Ice. Hammer's crew tries breaking up the crowd so Hammer can get through, and they run into Ice's crew heading towards the door. One of Ice's guys says, "Should have just left it alone. Who wants to get embarrassed by a white boy?" The two crews scuffle and a fight breaks out. Ice is already in a car and gone, the cops show up, a few of Ice's guys get arrested, a few of Hammer's guys get arrested, everyone's talking about it for the next week, and everyone at my school (I grew up in Miami, the club was just north in Fort Lauderdale) who was at the club that night wouldn't shut up about it for the next two days.
Vanilla Ice became a bit of a caricature later on, because of some of his behavior, and that led to him not being taken as seriously as he wanted to be. He wasn't underestimated, but was never given the respect he deserved. Back in the day, Ice had skills, including how good a dancer he was. And later on, the club incident was written off as urban legend, the only "evidence" of which was a few arrests on the books. Remember, this was a club in 1991 or 92, I think. No TH-cam, no smart phones, nothing. A video of this would have half a billion views if it happened today. I didn't even get to see it, I only know about it is because a bunch of kids from our high schools in Miami went to the clubs in Ft. Lauderdale a lot, and were in the audience at the time.

I was in 8th grade when this came out. I still know every line to the song. It’s so good to see Vanilla getting so much love and respect.
I know it's been ages since a comment, so no one will see it--BUT!!!! if you start this "tune" and Queen's "Under Pressure" at the same time you can fade in and out between the two of them and it blends seamlessly. Radio stations did it all the time back in the day and it was actually FUNNY. I know many people commented on lawsuit--but I didn't see any that mentioned the radio stations. It was soooooooo perfect.

Beastie boys were the first white mainstream rappers. But vanilla Ice blew up big in the early 90s. The rivalry was between vanilla ice “ice ice baby” vs mc hammers “you can’t touch this”. I remember you were either team ice or team hammer. One or the other. That’s how it was in those days.

Vanilla Ice wasn't dirty.. he wrote this song; it was his.. but he sampled the little "ting-ting-ting" and he was called out for it. But like other artists have said; they all sampled each other's tunes back then. He did the very same thing all the other artists were doing.. nothing more. Like Mel said: he had bars, he wrote the lyrics, he sang it, (rapped it) and he was a hell of a dancer. And no auto tune..
