Why Humans Can't Regrow Teeth

  • Humans can’t grow new teeth. But we’re not alone. Most mammals can’t. But many reptiles and fish can grow hundreds, or even thousands of new teeth in a lifetime. The reason has to do with how reptiles and mammals evolved differently over 300 million years ago.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Humans need dentists. It’s a fact. In 2017 alone, Americans spent $124 billion on dental visits. And an estimated 90% of adults in the US have fillings.
But many animals don’t have this problem. Because they can regrow their teeth replacing old, damaged ones with brand new pearly whites.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could do that? Well, there’s actually an important trade off for this nuisance.
Only a handful of mammals can regrow teeth multiple times, compared to the 50,000 species of reptiles and fish. Take geckos, for example, who will replace all 100 teeth, or so, every 3 to 4 months. And since geckos can live for 6 to 10 years, they’ll grow anywhere from 1,800 to 4,000 teeth in a lifetime! It’s all thanks to a special type of cell in their gums, called stem cells.
Stem cells are handy because they can morph into different cells when needed. Like tooth stem cells to build new teeth. Humans have these stem cells when we’re younger. But after our adult teeth grow in, the stem cells die and disappear.
To understand why, let’s take a journey back in time. To about 320 million years ago, when mammals and reptiles split off. In addition to the many obvious differences another change that eventually emerged was tooth shape. Reptiles, for example, are what’s called generalists. Meaning they eat the animals they can get their teeth on. And for that, they needed teeth with the same size and shape, to keep prey from escaping their mouths. Mammals, on the other hand, developed more specific diets. Like grazers who only eat grass and hunters who rip flesh from their kills. As a result, mammals evolved different shaped teeth for different purposes. And it’s this difference, that could also explain why most mammals can’t regrow more teeth.
Now, let’s say you could regrow your molars multiple times, for example. It’s important that the top and bottoms sets match up. Otherwise, they can’t grind up food as efficiently. It sounds good in principle, but with each new set, there’s a risk that the regrown teeth won’t line up. So the leading theory is that adult humans can’t regrow our teeth because it was better for survival to only grow one, well-aligned adult set.
However, if you still wish you could regrow a tooth, there may be a way in the future. Using lasers and drugs, scientists have helped rats and mice regrow damaged tissue in cavity-ridden teeth. With the idea that if you can regrow tooth tissue, you can eventually regrow entire teeth.
Though no human testing has been done, yet. So continue to see your dentist! At least for the time being.

While there are advantages to having non-replacable teeth, we humans stopped getting those advantages when we learned to use stone tools and fire to prepare and cook food. Notably, this is also why we often need wisdom teeth removed; Once we stopped needing our jaws to survive, they shrunk, and now they sometimes get a little too small for all the teeth in them.

1:13 That is not exactly true. We do have stem cells in our teeth as adults. "Researchers knew that the soft “tooth pulp” in the center of teeth contained a small population of mesenchymal stem cells, the type of stem cell that can mature into teeth, bones, and cartilage. But no one had conclusively determined where these stem cells came from. Adameyko figured that if he could trace their development, he might be able to recreate the process in the lab, thereby offering a new way of growing stem cells for tissue regeneration.
He and his and colleagues were already studying glial cells, which support and surround neurons that wind through the mouth and gums and help transmit signals of pain from the teeth to the brain. When they added fluorescent labels to a set of glial cells in mice, they saw that over time, some of them migrated away from neurons in the gums toward the inside of teeth, where they transformed into mesenchymal stem cells. Eventually, the same cells matured into tooth cells, the team reported this week in Nature."
The reason we cannot regenerate dentin after a large cavity is because the rate of decay far outpaces the rate or repair; probably for the same evolutionary reason mentioned in this video.

Well, I guess it can only regrow once. When it is a milk teeth, then you take it off when it moves, then it grows into a permanent tooth. If a permanent tooth falls off, then it won't grow anymore.

This video was very misleading due to poor research and over simplifying.
An example of the bad research comes to show at 1:03-1:20, where the host claims, humans can not regrow teeth due to the stem cells dying.
in reality teeth arises from a complex interaction between 2 of the 3 germ layers (stem cell layers), the mesenchymal layer and the ectodermal layer.
The mesenchymal layer gives rise to the dentin, whereas the ectodermal layer gives rise to the enamel. later on the development, all the ameloblasts(enamel producing cells) die due to a process called apoptosis. Although some odontoblasts (dentin producing cells) stays in the pulp of the tooth, and help with the regrowth of some dentine, it does not regrow everything and the process is very slow which leads me to my next point.
at 2:44 the claim is simplified so much, that it does not paint the right picture.
The laser- and drug treatments only speed up the normal growth of the dentin, but it does nothing to repair the enamel.
with all that being said, they at least got something right by saying the complexity of teeth limit their ability to regrow.
    - Edit children can not regrow teeth, all the teeth we have are produced during embryogenesis, this includes the primary and secondary sets of teeth.

theres a reason why (the regrow teeth invention hasn't been released)
because there would be no need for dentist anymore!!!
think about it , if such a drug/or whatever that activated that process again..why would you need a dentist, in a short time that problem tooth will be new again.
i wouldnt be surprised if it already out yet just locked up in vault somewhere..dentist board probably pays someone/the inventor to keep off the market. cause again if such a thing existed, that whole profession be gone..and of course they cant have that.
do i know this for sure..No..but cmon its not that far of a stretch to believe..and makes sense
same thing for the others ailmetns..no more hair specialist , Drs..if a pill could restore it all you wouldnt need it.
ever play a video game? when have you ever seen your game character go to the dr. to heal? there was magic drug in the games playthru that healed you along the way..and you were restored ..if that was reallife there be no hospitals..there just be that wonder pill in your supermarket section.

This doesn't make any sense. If you can regrow your teeth once in your life and they match perfectly, there is in principle no problem for the body to again regrow new set that would match.

Maybe regrowing all teeth continuously like for those reptiles is a bit exaggerated and not very useful. One thing is for sure though, being able to regrow and repair teeth’s tissue would be magical to have. That way there wouldn’t be any need to grow back entire new teeth all the time, you would just repair the pre-existing ones.

I like the idea that if your body looses a tooth, then another tooth grows back in. Why is this so difficult.......... I'm looking at you evolution and natural selection. If something happens and you loose a tooth then your body should grow another one in its place. I mean, this would fix all of dentistry. No more root canals, if your tooth is damaged or decayed then just pull it and let a new one grow in its place.

The correct title should be Why Adult Humans Can't Regrow Their Teeth because when a human is a child, we will lose our baby teeth and get our "new" teeth which are our adult teeth. Now, if I were to lose a tooth as an adult, then it would not grow back and the dentist would have to either remove the tooth and/or replace it.
I had a tooth that almost rotted out, but my dentist fixed it by making a model like a book holder for a bookshelf and put it on both sides of the tooth. I have also chipped part of a tooth, but that part grew back and I am fine. I don't even remember what tooth it was because it looks like the tooth never chipped off.
