dude, I'm in my 3nd week of uni (uk) and my performance lecturer pulled up one of your videos, about running a better band practice - i later told him that i've watched loads of your vids and we proceeded to debate whether the ts808 or boss bd2 sounds better. love your vids and please help us settle the debate (blues driver all day) 👌
Me & my bf said the same think about your first solo. There's a definite rough charm to it. I love going back to hear my old stuff & be like... oh yeah! I can REALLy do what I was going for now. Shout out to you my fellow Canadian.
I'm close to crossing my 18 year mark of playing guitar. My development isn't exactly where I'd like it to be, but I was always a multi-instrumentalist so my practice was split between up to 5 others at one point. My 10 year anniversary of my blues album was in 2022, and was going to remaster it, with new solos of course. I felt a lot of the same things you did in this video. And whenever I play my old songs today, I feel they've just refined to more what I originally envisioned all those years ago when I first wrote them, or the skill has opened the way for it to sound clearer to that vision. Now as I wind down from music, I know skill wise I'm not as capable as my peak, due to my hand being injured and never actually practicing, but the wisdom gained from those 18 years allows me to properly play what I hear in my head come out through my speaker, and I'm more than content with that.
funny that this came up, since yesterday I just did a rough sketch (not even to "demo" stage by my reckoning) of a song I wrote over 20 years ago, to see if it would fit in my set/style these days. Watching your own growth in music is one of my favorite things about doing it!
Just keep playing. Keep recording. You are creating art and the internet seems to be permanent. Maybe we'll be swallowed up in the Huxleyan deluge in the coming years, but our friends and family will have memories of what we did and maybe who we were. Rock on, brothers and sisters, whatever your style and taste. ❤
Bravo to you for being able to go back and listen to your early work. I grew up playing in church and I’ve done every kind of service in front of so many different people. I don’t want to hear any of that stuff. Onwards and upwards 😂
I think the improvement from the ska band to the 2013 solo is incredible. In the first one, a common pub player, in the second a truly excellent guitarist with his own voice. Huge improvement in quite a short time.
Especially as a creative, looking back and seeing parts that you can say "I did that" even while you notice the roughness to it all and still be proud of it
It would be interesting to see some early recordings when I was a kid playing, but my folks didn't have a camcorder back then. Not their fault... it hadn't been invented yet.
5:16 great recreation but there was a video a few years back where you did the exact same thing, even the same ideas for the recreation of Funk Bath. Eh whatever, good video.
Its funny to me because i've been playing for like 2 years, and i'm doing great i think, but i know if i practiced more i'd be better hahaha. Its intimidating because i've been doing mostly rhythm and no soloing really, and i'm scared i won't progress as easily as i do with rhythm. I'm also getting into jazz and i really wanna play with the band i'm in, i feel like i need to learn sheet music and like i'll play something wrong, but i'm learning nevertheless, and jazz is pretty rad. Although all of that really is pretty calm compared to composing/producing music. I feel like the sounds have to be a certain way and performance is weirdly difficult, its always i need this or that and well, its difficult. That's the part you don't get to see because well, it takes years and years of learning all these different arts from a team of people, and its quite the illusion sometimes. But there's a reason why we do it, and it's not because we're the best at it hahaha
I bought a 4-track when I was 18. Recorded everything I could play, and when I listened back everything sounded terrible. Sold the 4-track soon after, it was obviously faulty 😄
Sammy, this vid makes me think you need some rough edges to your playing. The way that Picasso had to get really fantastic at realism to discover cubism.
I can't even play my old recordings hahah, went from metalcore, skramz/mathcore then to prog-metal. Switched to bass now I write radio rock and hyper pop-punk.....I think
I use Moises. I Fucking Love it and Live by it. This isn't some bot bullshit this is a legit review. I love Moises and use it anything I need the Stems of a song. I recently used it to make backing tracks for a gig. though im on the free account, it's still works
Why do I feel dirty listening to this ad? Oh, because it's an ad. I feel pretty gross just watching this. I get sponsoship and ads but this is just cringe. Goodbye.
Real ones recognize the bend at 9:37
That bend immediately perked my ears up, quality work Sammy G
I was listening to the video when I heard that. Put the video back a few seconds, then immediately went into the comments to see who else noticed lol
Had to rewind that a few times to see how you did it. Nice touch :)
We need a lesson vid!
I KNEW IT!!!!! "spark up a little creative energy"
9:36 HE DID THE THING
What am I missing?! I loved that lick so much that I'm having a wee moment.
That dual bend technique is just insane!!! I might have to really practice that.
@@saintluciaofficial2019 it's actually a triple bend, look closely and you'll see that he grabs another string while on the bend down and moves it up
Oh my gosh, the thing.
“Spark up a little creative energy” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

the personnel listing on the cd threw me for a loop. for some dumb reason it never occurred to me that your name was not actually "SAMMY G."
love the easter egg of the jerry donahue triple-string bend at @9:36!
Ive been watching you since ive started playing, I really appreciate the transparency and honesty with your videos and always will
love this video, genuinely thank you for posting

For me, it’s the BOSS BD2 all the way.
Really liked that ska band solo. Ernie Isley-esque. 😎
That was a fun watch. I'll also endorse Moises. I've been using it for a year at least and it is fantastic. The best $40 I ever spent on music gear.
how did you comment four hours ago before the vid was up?

Amazing! Thanks for the video!

My parents got me a mini reel recorder that I used until it ultimately died of age at 23. Miss that damn thing.

Loved watching this one! Nice triple bend. You have been practicing 👏
You'll never find the final plateau. You'll always find something new and that is the great thing with playing instruments.

THE BEND IN THE COUNTRY SOLO
“Creative energy” yeah right
You’ve been practicing 🎸👏🎸
That is Let it Be.
great vid! Miss the old Tele.
It would be interesting to see some early recordings when I was a kid playing, but my folks didn't have a camcorder back then. Not their fault... it hadn't been invented yet.
I might figure out how to record this winter.
it was always someone else doing that.

Ive been playing 28 years now. I started because of green day, and played on stage with them a year and a half later

One like = 10 minutes of guitar practice today!

You might want to spread that across the week, mate. And if you play fingerstyle like I do, I hope you have LOTS of bandaids.
We gotta dislike this guy for his own good 👎
8 hours so far!
2:06 please give us more cheaply modified cheap guitar 🙏I wanna see what kind of horrors you can make with a professional luthier.
Ohmagawd Sammy G is 37 years old?!
I bought a 4-track when I was 18. Recorded everything I could play, and when I listened back everything sounded terrible. Sold the 4-track soon after, it was obviously faulty 😄
Oddly enough, he looks 26 in both photos
Sammy, this vid makes me think you need some rough edges to your playing. The way that Picasso had to get really fantastic at realism to discover cubism.
I kinda prefer the year 1 playing
Sorry, did you say you were reaching a plateau? Looking forward to the video in your 60s. I have yet to regress. Technique and soul over arthritis ;)

Have you ever done a video on playing a 12 string?
I kinda think the original solos fit the songs better. Yes the later ones are more refined and technical, but I like the originals more.
At 15 I was a terrible player. At 25 I was still a terrible player.
At 45 i was still a terrible player. At 55 I pretty much gave up.
I think you and Cory Wong should team up.

Steve Olontera?
Another great vid. But pity about your "ska" solo. The orig was so much better/appropriate.
