  • The bleak Norfolk coast in the 1880s is the setting for the latest task where the men must catch a seemingly impossible quota of mussels and oysters to ship to the London markets and the women gut fish for sale at local markets. When the deadline seems out of reach the whole team pulls together to save the day, giving them a true sense of camaraderie for which they are rewarded with suppers of fish and chips.

Zoe's "I should've been a boy" statement really brings home how much these people must have suffered from their enforced segregation between men and women. I wonder how much they missed from not letting a dextrous man do "women's work", or a strong woman do "men's work".

Maybe so.. but I'd be willing to bet that Zoe's case she wouldn't have been saying that she wished she was a boy when she realized she wasn't going to "play with the animals" but be cleaning shit off their backsides as well as shoveling literally a ton of shit out of the court yard. She actually walked out of her job in the previous episode bc she refused to pluck feathers off of 3 birds for crying out loud. Idk.. maybe I'm wrong.

If you watch fact feast's channel, there are tonnes of examples in the 19th century of women doing the work of men. The poorer you were, the less division by sex in labour there was (besides reproductive labour, which can only be done by women, obviously). These kinds of shows emphasize the rules that were supposed to be imposed on women, but in reality they weren't always. Women worked in mines, even when it was made illegal, they shovelled street muck, they hauled stone, they kneaded dough, everything. If work needed to me done and there wasn't enough men to do it, or no men, women stepped in. It wasn't considered ideal, but it was the done thing.

I love this show. This is my type of "reality" show. Learn something about history, learn a little bit more about people you've seen and their skills, but everyone is nice (and not in a fake way) and there isn't any cattiness. It's not about showing people at their worst and watching train wrecks happening. No shame if that's you're thing, it's just always made me really uncomfortable. I don't find it entertaining.

I thought she was vulgar on the last part. Also, she lied. She likes other things cause you can see her get dressed up like many other celebs. Also, wouldn't she miss acting since she's was a actress? So she likes other things too. In these past eras, she might have been poor and unable to afford to be a actress. She was put in the roles and jobs of poor people. At the end of the series she said she enjoyed doing this but would not want to do it again. So she wanted to return to her modern and wealthy life. So she was dishonest.

This episode should have been Zoe's era. I was actually optimistic when they sent her out into the boat, because I thought a good, hard, physical task would help her shine. She's always carrying on about how she wishes she was a boy, and how she loves physical work, so I thought "perfect! Get her rowing." But she even failed at that. The editors were kind to her. They show her taking over the oars and then the next shot is the boat drifting back to shore, and Chris taking over rowing again. So far the only task she hasn't failed at is gathering and carrying seaweed. A task that requires a lot of strength but no skill or co-ordination.

The way I see it is that either the strength of muscles or of the wit is nothing in a situation of crisis if it's not paired with a strength of character, discipline and dedication. And that is something I am missing in Zoe and Chris. I wouldn't want to be stranded on a deserted island with any of them, because they would just fail me and die miserably, taking me with them to an early grave. They proved their uselessness and incompetence to perform or even to begin to undertake the easiest tasks in more than one episode and let their colleagues down repeatedly.
What I'm missing in this episode is the actual confrontation with the part of their life they'd live after hours - their living conditions, the beds, or the lack of them, they's sleep in, cooking and hygiene appliances etc. They only made it through the work shift, but we learned nothing about their house quarters.

if they wanted us to see how people truly lived and did these jobs in these times, they would have hired experts for each position. What we're seeing isnt some authentic life of the past. Its how we, people of the 21st century, would do in these times. Not everyone will be ok with the jobs. So a mix of people able to do it, and those not able to is a good mixture of representation. I think the show you're looking for is naked and afraid. Absolute History has some episodes with true experts at work as well.

Still, a fun and informative show, we in the modern era tend to romanticize the past (the good old days), Like the Edwardian age is seen as a grand spectacle full of marvelous inventions and extravagant pageantry (Titanic for example), we give little thought to the hard brutal realities that were the true "bedrock". In my own case, I may complain about my job but compared to the jobs these guys get, my 30-35 hour work week is an absolute breeze.

I feel like some folks are overly negative about them, especially Zoe. In a population of people not every single person is the same and I feel like that is represented well on this show. Zoe did a good job this episode. The only part she failed at was rowing a boat. That is a skill, especially in an ocean against the current. That was a task most people would have failed at if they never tried, especially under pressure and fatigued. What we see on this show is people with a variety of skills, some people come in with more farm/culinary skills than others, some are quicker learners than others, and that is pretty true to life. Calling someone useless is really drastic and hurtful. I don't think it's necessary here, it's just an educational TV show.

Plus, those are historians and archaeologists who know how to do everything and find it fun. They haven't told the celebrity groups much at all.
Not to mention actual people of the era were far more trained up for this sort of devastating behavior and ate far more calories to support it. The modern day person is less skilled and less fit.

@Buttered Lumps They may show how different people would react initially, but to quit as she has twice up until now would mean possible starvation for her and her family. To be suitable for this show, she needs to show determination, not how wet she is.

    • @resnonverba137
      @resnonverba137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Buttered Lumps You don't see the punishments, she quits and walks off. Kirsty is a very odd choice for this very British show. I can only imagine that someone took pity on her for her waning popularity in the US. It doesn't seem to have helped, as she's even less popular now.

I find this quite funny. I come from a mussel fishing family, and we still use hand tools as shown in this film, to gather and clean the mussels; nets, rakes, and riddles. On an average day I can rake up 20 bushel sacks on my own in the few hours of low tide. It's funny that it took so many men to just rake up 4 sacks

Great video. It was mentioned the boats were at the mercy of the weather. Indeed they were with sails. Mariners abandoned sails for engines to make ocean travel safer. Yet today, some want to base the power grid on fickle wind, and more fickle solar. Looks like some need to learn the lesson known during the 19th cent the hard way.

19:50 - because propriety was more important to the bigoted society than practical issues. When the wide, middle- and high-class society learned that women working in coal, slate and other mines (yes, they performed subservient functions under the ground, pretty much like mules did), were rather scantily clad during their work (not even remotely as scantily as modern beach goers, but yeah) what the public was most horrified with was not the laughably meager pay they received or the horrifying conditions they worked in, no - what was most shocking for nicely clad, well-off and sated people who never had their hands dirty with honest work was that the aforementioned women worked half-naked because of the high temperatures deep under the surface of the Earth. Which was followed by those oh so holy people influencing the government on banning those women from the work and rather having them starve from lack of means to live than to allow them to take their petticoats off for the sake of their comfort at work.

I've just happened to see ads sometimes asking people to apply or audition for shows. Such as commercials on tv. Now, I don't watch tv. Maybe you can look up these things. The Turn Back Time show had regular people and their families come on and live and work in past eras.
People can also push for the public to be able to experience this. Like a theme park, hotel, festival, or event. There are medieval fairs.

The cookies could have been saved by creaming the sugar into the shortening, (lard, butter,) using more flour. Still, good save by Kirstie. The guys were dangerous with scissors. Keep your fingers between the blade and the animal's skin. I was afraid they were going to circumcise the little bastard! These people would have fared better if they'd known modern methods, maybe. Tapping on a loaf of bread is how to test it. If it sound hollow, it's done. The cooking surface of the oven is cleaned with a wire brush. You wouldn't feed those burnt crusts to the animals. Had I been present in the kitchen I'd offered my own recipe....for gun powder, lol.
