- The final setting is an Iron age village in A.D, 43 and, whilst there are no bosses, life is certainly primitive as the group must make bread, start a fire from scratch and prepare chickens and a deer, as well as constructing a wicker man to burn at their feast. One of their number fails to stay the course, their identity being somewhat of a surprise though the remainder toast themselves at their celebration with Chris getting a special title.

Kirstie impressed me the most, I would love to see her host future history shows. She was very entertaining to watch and got stuff done.
Yes. She became my favorite. At first, I thought she would fail, but instead, she excelled. She absolutely loved playing her parts and was obviously having a lot of fun doing it. She showed great attitude throughout the series. Zoe could learn from her.

As an American, I really wish they had not cast an American on this. We just do not have any concept of history before the late colonial era. We like to pretend that time period didn’t exist and that we didn’t just run in and remove all the people who lived here before us.

@@sarah_noodle I think that was the vibe they were trying to show with casting an American- to show someone’s reaction who probably didn’t know said certain time even existed. Imo I think Kristie did great, it was a breath of fresh air to finally have someone with similar opinions/reactions on there. This channel is filled with British reactions to the past, having an American spice it up and rep us needs to happen more often.

I would have LOVED to do a full 24 hours, or even a whole week camp, of living history as a kid.
As it was, because I homeschooled for elementary school as part of a large group of families, we did a lot of field trips to historical education centers where we tried out stuff like that for a few hours. Those day trips learning about the gold rush, colonial era, the 1800's, and Native Americans were some of my favorite memories (along with some museum trips and trips to various children's science learning centers) of my early education. If there had been an option for longer immersive camps, I know I would have begged and cajoled my parents endlessly to let me do it.

This would have made some great Reality Tv-series show! Put together small groups of people and send them back in time,give them tasks to complete to travel forward to the next time period and see who make it first to the future. :D
Back in the 70s there was a series called Living in the Past. A year in this era w various couples and families. Hard work, but most got there in the end.
It was excellent and inspiring. Some catch up interviews are available on YT.

I can accept Fern throwing in the towel - she's been a trooper throughout the series. Unlike Zoe, who practically just hauled seaweeds as her greatest achievement and failed majority of her tasks in almost all time periods.
Yeah, Zoe was such a disappointment. In many times, it looked like she wasn't even going to bother to try. She turned her nose up at the simplest task and couldn't even be bothered to show up on time.

I think Ferne clashed quite a Louise. Whenever they worked closely together, Louise would pick her to pieces and criticise her. The last person to work with Ferne was Louise, I wonder if that was why? Ferne refused to go back into the roundhouse, not even to say goodbye x
I was excited to hear that one of the cast was a female Olympic weightlifter. But Zoe's perfomance has been a disappointment. Most of them are troopers.
What a fitting end to an absolutely fascinating series.
I loved every episode and hope they do another.

What this doesn't seem to take into account is that if they were genuine Iron Age people they would have been raised from infancy knowing how to do things and be quite skilled at it. They would all have been wearing knives even the women. . They would have a stock of tools.
Yeah I think it was a little ridiculous they gave them all the commodities they needed except sharp knives. Realistically, it should have been part of their costumes. As if it wouldn't have been difficult enough skinning and prepping dinner with only a knife.
they purposely did NOT give them knives to force them to trade with that blacksmith because trading was an important part of that era, and since knives are so important they had to make the clan trade other important parts for a knife, otherwise the trading would have seemed unimportant
One episode mentioned that...people from the past were accustomed to these every day task. Much more practice.
By the same token though they also would have had vastly more to do. Wood didn't come nicely cut with a chainsaw and split with a mechanical splitter like the wood they used did.They cur it by hand. Grain is REALLY hard to grow in sufficient quantities to to make ANYTHING with much less enough bread for survival, water had to be carted from a stream or lake, the animals they ate had to be killed...the chickens they had there were nowhere near numerous enough to feed them, there was constant work on the shelters, houses, animals had to be kept alive over winter, etc etc. So yes, they already had knives and skills, but the workload was vastly more immense than what was shown here too.
I know that life was hard during the Iron age but you could argue that when you grow up in this atmosphere, you will be good at doing all this stuff. Besides, there is something to be said about living off the land, not paying taxes, not running the rat race and most of all, not messing up nature.
This was my favorite age of this series. So much nicer to be out in nature with a smaller group of people.
I so enjoyed this series. I commend all the celebrities for sticking it out and enduring each era of time. They certainly has more bravery than I.
If you boil the chicken for about 5 minutes, it is going to be much easier to pluck the feathers.
Then the feathers are weirdly sharp. My grandmother used to do that, and it always gave me really bad paper-cut like wounds. I just preferred to pluck 'em dry, and then singe the left over hair fibers, LOL.
I do hope that you will be bringing us more seasons of this series. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Bitter sweet. It was awesome to see them in this time line. But for it to be there final one was sad. Hopefully this channel will bring more content as good as this has been.
Roman soldiers were paid in salt only in the very early part of Roman history and during wars when salt prices skyrocketed. As the time went by, the coin payment was introduced to a larger and larger degree and the PART of their salary paid in salt decreased gradually until it was fully replaced with money.
I thought this whole series was brilliant. It really brings history alive. I used to hate history at school the way it was taught, all about wars. This social history is much, much better.
wow this is one of the most enjoyable series absolute history has premiered on TH-cam. it is so great to see when celebrities can appear in these programs because I feel like its easier to pay attention to and be entertained by the history. and also my heart goes out to Fern ! anyways that being said I think the dynamics of the cast together is what completes it so well.
They'll be cold and hungry overnight, but, once the knife is in their hands, all they need is flint, and Kirstie will have them a fire. (if, of course, borrowing a coal doesn't occur to them.)
Such a fun series to watch. I love Kirsty Alley. I don't know why they chose her to be on this show, but I'm sure glad they did !

Considering how well Kirstie was at everything I can't believe they didn't put her in charge. I know she said she doesn't know anything, but she has way more common sense than anyone else there.

I'm amazed the blacksmith didn't give them a sharpened knife. As a knife collector even I can notice the whetstone he gave them was too smooth to sharpen a freshly made on sharpened knife.
I'm very very impressed with how true this show was to the exercise, and how thoroughly all the participants committed to the task
In the iron age, there would be at least one villager who is able to make a stone knife. Stone knives work excellent for skinning hides

What an experience for them all. They not only learned history, they lived it. It gave them new insight on the lives of people back then and taking less for granted of what they have now.
Back in the day, they would save the feathers as nothing goes unwaisted.

The guy sharpening the knife had no clue what he was doing 😆... His short, light strokes across the stone would obviously get you nowhere.
Proud of Chris for over coming his OCD. I have OCD so i know how hard it is for him. This is great expsourse therapy though that most people would have to play a lot of money for. Great job Chris!!

I'm going to ask a dumb question: why did no one go in search of flint?
It's good for making fire, and can be easily made sharp enough for cutting things. It's been found in digs all over England, so I have to assume it isn't incredibly rare. In fact, why didn't they have at least a couple flint pieces in the camp? I know iron was obviously preferred by then, but people still used flint on occasion during the iron age when metal tools were scarce because flint was FREE and required no specialized skills to work with.

I have loved this series the most - I WANT MORE! Could only do this in Britian, certainly not in America.
Pluck and gut the chicken. Put it in the pot to boil, once cooked you can skin it and joint it much easier. It will also preserve it better for consumption tomorrow.

I feel much better about myself! I have so many skills that have been lost. I can start fire without a match or flint and steel, I can gut and skin a wide range of creatures, large and small and land and sea, I can find food in the bush and cook it. I can make clothing from all manner of material and build structures. Makes me proud as a peacock 🦚 after watching these shows!
It really makes you appreciate how far humans have come from. Imagine. You are alive cuz someone from the Iron Age made it and survived long enough lol that’s wild.

Loved this series. But it's amazing how they have no exposure to cleaning fish and chicken. I buy it fresh here, so cleaning is part of it. But the most absurd part of this episode was the stress on cutting the chicken. All they had to do was gut it and stick it whole on a stick over the fire!!! No need to cut
This is like what Ruth and the boys were doing, but just a few days instead of half a year and with amateurs instead of professionals. I would have loved to see them doing at least a week, and actually doing it the other way around, learning about more progressive tools and techniques along the way. You TV producers can have that one for free!
This was a great series and I hope y'all think of doing this again! Also, the Celtic and Pagan holidays are still celebrated to this day.
From an anthropology standpoint (or would it be sociology?) I'd like to hear how the participants felt changed by each Era.

This is such a cool concept! The only thing that bothers me about these kinds of experiments is that some of the things they have to do would have been common knowledge back in the day. For instance, how to gut a chicken or skin a deer. Children would have learned how to do that as soon as they developed the strength to help their parents. So, it's a bit inaccurate in that sense, seems like giving them at least a picture manual would have helped.

I agree. . The only time a wicker man ever gets mentioned is in Roman propaganda. For a group of people who crucified their opponents, got off on watching things die in the Arena and foretold things through reading entrails of sacrificed animals , they were very quick to condemn others.

What a team they made. The disappoint was Zoe didn't develop as the others did, apart from collecting seaweed she had nothing to offer and overcame nothing either.
I would've had the chickens at least partially plucked and had already split them with the good knife, handed it back to the deer skinners and got the chicken finished plucking and cleaned whole to cook on a spit. Their problem was time management.

I love this show! It's a time travel. Authentic closely. It teaches the reality of that time period. Its a combination of being in the past, but aware of their own time presence and they know the future. What would be interesting would be to have a conversation with someone from that time. How they really talked and what their thoughts are and how they differ from the time crasher.

My Grandfather sure could skin a deer a lot faster than I could as a child he got one half penny for every muscrat he skinned.. He Buthcered many Hogs .. He grew up on a Farm.. I watched him clean a snapping Turtle before ..as a child
I skinned a rabbit a couple years ago. My dog caught it. So she got meat and I got to learn a new skill and a pelt.
The slackest bow drill I've ever seen. Probably why they had so much trouble.
The fire sticks they received were poorly constructed - they looked different from what I've seen before on primitive technology. The speed and range of motion looked strange - perhaps the string was attached incorrectly or too loose?
They where just using it wrong. But they did perfect getting fire from the blacksmith.
Archaeologist here: you have to get the string on the stick and twist it tight to the stick, twisting 2-3 preferred for me, before moving the bow back and forth rapidly. It's difficult to get smoke but you keep at it or you don't get anything.

@@thorsten9129 Oh yeah all bang on, I did this throughout archaeology, but if you haven't done it before you'll get a lot of burning and smoke but no fire. On our own some of us struggled but team efforts so important.

I do think it is interesting that the youngest and physically fittest was constantly throwing in the towel and whining that everything was too hard. to do. And she lifts hundreds of pounds weights and wins championships. She can't be a quitter. Couldn't figure tha out. It was a great series though. Fun and informative.!

Per University of Exeter chickens and hares and chickens arrived in Britain in the Iron Age between 5th-3rd century BC. They were too honored to be eaten and were considered deities.
