    I love how the script your caller reads inserts the qualifiers “better/worse” and “more/less complex” into its description of the second law. I love also how the reader of the script argues that, since the universe is an isolated system, the minuscule part of the system containing just the earth must also be an isolated system. The qualifiers and the argument betray the complete ignorance of thermodynamics of both the scriptwriter and the reader. The second law is silent on whether things will get “better” or “worse” over time. And, as far as we know, the universe is isolated, but one cannot say the same of any individual subdivision of the universe.
    His confusion about these things, however, is EXACTLY consistent with the newly discovered fourth law of thermodynamics: “Christians who don’t understand thermodynamics and who learn a tiny bit from other christians who also don’t understand thermodynamics will come to believe that they know more about thermodynamics than people who actually do understand the subject.” It seems to be a very unfortunate, but fundamental law of the universe.

    • @dansmith7009
      @dansmith7009 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, even his whole analogy is dumb.
      If we are comparing life on earth to boiling water on the stove, the burner = the sun.
      Yes, science agrees that if we turn off the sun, life on earth would quickly degenerate, until the only things left alive was life based around the thermal energy from the earth’s core, hydrothermal ocean vents.

    • @dansmith7009
      @dansmith7009 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That’s only the first half of why it’s silly.
      Even once you look at the solar system as a closed system (which, it isn’t exactly, but close enough), then the total entropy is increasing, but the entropy on earth is decreasing.
      The sun turning an absurd amount of hydrogen into helium and radiation makes so much more entropy.
      It’s like saying gravity only pulls things down, and saying it makes a trebuchet impossible.
      Or using a rope and pulley with a rock to lift water.
      Heavy thing being pulled down can make lighter thing get pulled up, but gravity is pulling the average center mass down overall.

  • @Bunny99s
    @Bunny99s ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, the entropy of the closed system we call the universe does increase. However that doesn't mean that parts inside the system can not decrease entropy. The sun as it fuses hydrogen it actually increases entropy of the universe. However that energy that is emitted can reduce the entropy at a different place, like on earth. So that energy can create order here on earth but the total entropy of the universe is still increasing as the sun emits much more energy.
    Well, I just realise that you just explained that very thing to him but he still doesn't get it ^^....
    Say the earth has an energy of "1000" (no units) and the sun has potential energy of "1000000000000000". The sun is loosing energy while the earth may increase it's energy. So the sun may loose several times the total amount of energy the earth has each day and "some" of that energy can increase the energy of the earth (and therefore lower the entropy on the earth).
    omg :) I'm just at 54:00 It's just painful how he can not do the basics of fact checks. He said all scientific sources he looked up said that evolution violates entropy. The actual scientific source in his list clearly said the opposite but he didn't read beyond the headline.... The other sources are religious sources. That explains a lot. If you're not able to properly "research" and evaluate and judge a source, no wonder people end up at wacky conclusions. Mix it with confirmation bias and you get a flat earther, evolution denier or anti vaxxer.

So the Earth, much like the ramen, is still accepting the transfer of energy from the the Sun into its ecosystem. I would have used a gasoline/petrol example.
    your car can go through all sorts of changes over time as long as you have gas, but one day there will be no gas, and what's left in the tank is your closed system.

    Are you Fing kidding me. I’m 52 minutes and we’re now finding that he only read THE FIRST SENTENCE of the source he claims debunks evolution which then led to him purposefully not understanding every explanation. His Jesus lord god help me

    Evolution doesn't assert that life forms "get better" over time. That makes no sense.

    Out of curiosity I looked up whether or not the universe is an open or closed system. The best answer I found was: The jury's still out. Most cosmologists lean towards a closed system based on current observations. However, dark energy and the possibility of a multiverse keep the question open for further investigation.
    So, the universe is likely closed based on most the current evidence but the ambiguity of dark energy and the potential for a multiverse leaves no definitive conclusion at this time. Someone correct me if I am incorrect.

    Isn't he demonstrating confirmation bias? He's acknowledged that he can't determine a credible source from biased religious propaganda, but then he still searches for sources to confirm his beliefs, in order to challenge the one person in the room whose opinion he claims to respect...cos he clearly doesn't respect Eric, and despite being told so many times that he is not understanding the concepts being discussed, he still googles websites to confirm his belief, whilst asking if they are credible! It's crazy!

    I don’t get this dude. He’s pre-med??? I’m not pre-med or a physicist and I could fully understand what they were trying to teach him. It just seems like he doesn’t WANT it to be true, therefore it isn’t true. Personal truths(not truths) are a problem in society. 😂

    The overall entropy of the universe as a whole increases. That doesnt mean there csnt be eddies in the smaller parts of the universe where entropy decreases.

    The name of this epidode is perfectly spot on. He's a totally brick wall. Him: The entropy of the universe must increase. You: The entropy of the earth may decrease while the total entropy of the universe increases. Him: But the 2nd law. The entropy of the universe must increase!
    He thinks that means that every single individual system in the universe must increase its energy. He takes "entire universe" means every part of the universe and not as the universe as a whole when taken as a single system. The latter is, of course, the correct interpretstion.

    With regard to the whole entropy conversation, the argument could be made that life itself exists as an entropy-increasing factor. There need not be a suspension of entropy when the processes that sustain life expend useable energy. We are matter “designed” by nature to increase entropy, thus the whole conversation was entirely pointless
