One of the greatest things about Chicago is missing in the video and that is Chicago's lakefront. There is a big focus on the riverwalk and that's nice but the lakefront is the crown jewel of Chicago. In Chicago along the lakefront there is a continuous park that goes on for about 20 miles. There are beautiful beaches for swimming and sunbathing.

The green water in the Chicago River flows into the Des Plaines River, then the Illinois River and finally into the Mississippi River where it flows into the Gulf of Mexico passing by St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans along the way. The green dye is biodegradable and doesn’t stay green for long.

The architecture river cruise offered by the Chicago Architecture Center is my favorite thing to do. Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper, and our river running through the downtown core is the absolutely gorgeous way to see it all. I’ve lived in Chicago for 8 years, and I gladly go 1-2 times per year when people visit. It absolutely never gets old, even for us locals.

It is a great tour and a top attraction and the RiverWalk is great.... Just most never say there are options of River AND LAKE tours... though it is longer to go into the Lake + the River.... I feel even if 2 separate ones are done that the LAKE tour for skyline view are awesome too. Many take those from Navy Pier if not doing a joint one for both. Also all should know how much cooler and breezy it can be on the Lake especially till mid-July. So taking a jacket and PROTECTION FROM THE SUN a good idea. Some splashing on a windy day can occur. Still even just the River is awesome too with some physical announcers giving good history lessons on buildings and city that add to the tour greatly.

The Art Institute is one of the world’s premiere art museums. It’s my favorite of the city’s museums. I remember dragging my dad there when I was around 13 years old to see an exhibition of art and artifacts from Pompeii, and I’ve also seen other traveling exhibitions of artists like Sargent and Monet. I also love the permanent exhibits such as the gorgeous trading room from the Stock Exchange, rescued before the building was demolished, and the wonderfully detailed Thorne miniature rooms, as well as such famous masterpieces as Island of La Grande Jatte, Nighthawks, and American Gothic.

I spent my first 30 yrs living in suburban Chicago. My dad was an Ironworker in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, so the architectural River tour still fascinates me. You also go through the locks to get onto Lake Michigan for a short while. The views of the city are stunning from the lake.
The Museum of Science and Industry was a yearly school field trip from 4-6th grade.

We loved the Museum of Science & Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Field Museum. I’ve never done the architectural river boat tour, but it sounds like an excellent way to see the city: the Chicago River flows right through the heart of downtown.

Architecture Tour is a must. Go around sunset/evening so you get the city view at night. I’ve taken everyone who visits me in the city, and they always list it at the top of their favorite things.
Sue is not a replica, but a real fossil named for Sue Hendrickson who is the one who discovered it in South Dakota.
Also, the Navy Pier fireworks are every Wednesday and Saturday beginning Memorial Day (End of May) and Labor Day (Beginning of September) and if you watch them from the Pier, they have music that goes along with them.

You might be interested in a site near Buckingham Fountain. The Queen's Landing next to the fountain on Lake Michigan, is where in 1959, Queen Elizabeth came ashore and spent the day visiting Chicago. In conjunction with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, she visited Canadian and US ports of call on the Great Lakes by boat.

I live on the north side of Chicago. Chicago is beautiful. Definitely come during spring! The summer can randomly get humid. It’s a hit or miss. I wouldn’t recommend venturing to far south. The higher the number(the south side tends to go by numbers for streets.) the worse it tends to get. North side is good, and it’s a bit cheaper compared to Chicago. Lincoln park, wriggley field are great. It’s lively, and not downtown. Chicago is huge and spans from west, to south and north

Hi Beesleys! I really enjoy youre videos. On your next US trip you definitely have to come to Chicago. There's a lot more here than this video could cover. Conde Nast Traveler has rated Chicago Best US Big City for 8 years in a row! That's a record. Even though we are third in size, travelers repeatedly choose us over New York, LA, and other contenders like San Francisco, Miami, and Las Vegas. Summertime here is awesome! Adding to our already great attractions, restaurants, sports teams/stadiums, shopping, museums, the loop, theater district, jazz clubs, and blues clubs, each summer we have Navy Pier fireworks (Wednesday & Saturday), Music Festivals large (Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, Jazz Fest, Blues Fest, Gospel Fest, World Music Fest) and small, The Air and Water Show, Taste of Chicago Food Fest, Chicago Summer Dance, Millenium Park Music Series, and Millenium Park Film Series. And you have to ride the L when you're here. It's iconic!

    As a native Chicagoan
10: Field Museums IT’S HUGE and you can easily spend more than one full day here. Also, great family restroom.
9: Riverwalk - very nice in good weather. Overall we are a very walkable city. I think that St. Patrick’s Day is horrible! Drunk people everywhere. The weather is often bad.
8: Art Institute is amazing. Great food too. And very walkable to a lot of the rest of downtown. YES!
7: MSI - Great, but a far enough outside of downtown that it’s skippable if you have limited time.
6: Architecture river tour - absolute must do! Especially in good weather. As a native, it’s something I try to do every few years because the views are stunning and the history is fascinating.
5: LPZ - it’s okay, and being free is a big plus. Nice for kids and good if you need a more quiet day. As with almost all Chicago museums parking is very expensive, so try to avoid driving. Zoo lights around Christmas is also a lot of fun, but be prepared for cold weather.
4: Navy Pier is a tourist trap. Everything is wildly expensive. Avoid unless there is a specific event like a concert or a boat trip you’d like to do.
3: Mag Mile - great place for shopping or just walking around downtown. But most of the stores also exist in most major cities. Not a bad way to stretch your legs and get a feel for Chicago if the weather is good, but also perfectly reasonable to skip.
2: Millennium park is lovely! Pay attention to what’s going on seasonally. There’s lots of free concerts in the summer and ice skating in the winter. Maggie Daley Park is a great playground for kids. And it’s almost all free. Just grabbing some sandwiches and sitting on the grass people-watching can make for a lovely afternoon. That said, it’s highly weather dependent. And don’t trust the weather forecast more than a few days out in Chicago. The spitting fountains are a lot of fun in the summer and you’ll see everyone from high-powered business folks to little kids dipping their feet in the summer.
1: Basically an extension of Millennium Park. Lots of fun festivals. Easily walkable from the loop.
    Missed on this list:
BEACHES! The water is cold till mid-late summer, but beaches are clear, shallow, sandy, and free. At least walk along the lakefront and try to wade at one of the beaches at some point unless it’s winter.
Theater: Great city to see a Broadway-caliber show. We also have a ton of community theater and improv & comedy clubs.
Food: We have Michelin Starred restaurants, but we also have just about any ethnic cuisine you can name. I’d argue that one of the best places to get an authentic Chicago style hot dog is Home Depot. L’Appitoto is an amazing Italian deli just off the Mag Mile.

I grew up in Hyde Park a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago where the museum of science and industry is located. Chicago is amazing! Please visit Beesley family.

Lived in and around Chicago most of my life (72 years). Have rarely seen crime. Don't worry about crime in tourist-type locales. It is mostly confined to the South and West sides.
Video should have talked about Lake Michigan. Don't recall if they talked about Waveland Golf Course right along the lakefront. Public parks and beaches cover 26 miles. My favorite beaches were in Evanston but there is a slight fee there..
There is a lot to see and do in Chicago and the suburbs. Public transportation will take you everywhere.
And perhaps you have a tour guide in Laurence Brown.

Best advice (love Chicago) buy a museum package you’ll save lots of money! And if you stay in the city be aware that you will still pay for parking (if you rent a car). It’s usually about 40 to 70 dollars per day. Not included with most hotels. ❤

Chicago is a beautiful city, but it does have a lot of riffraff. There were so many beautiful places to visit. Yes everybody wants to go downtown and visit Millenium Park, but I would definitely tour the northside lakefront. Take a bike ride North to neighboring Evanston. Get yourself a deep dish, Chicago style pizza and an Italian beef. You will fall in love with the city, but there are some parts that are very dangerous.

When visitors from the coasts come to Chicago, they cannot believe the massive size of Lake Michigan. They all think it's an ocean--and it's all freshwater!

I am from NYC, but when I was real young I also lived in Chicago and Boston.
It would be better and cheaper in the long run to find a hotel near the places you want to visit because the the subway (CTA) is not that cheap. And spending a lot of time traveling by train takes away from sightseeing. Spend the money on a local hotel instead.
