@Joel & Lia 10 and 2 is old school. With airbags now, in a fenderbender when the airbag goes off it pulls your hand off the steering wheel and you end up punching yourself in the face. 4 and 8 is the preferred placement now.

Also try to get away from all the tourist traps, There is a Place called Christmas, Florida worth visiting. Also visit Coaco Beach, and New Symra beach, Coaco beach has Ron John Surf shop which is a popular tourist point. Also take a look at Kenndy space center as well as Gaterland Zoo. You can see alligators, as well in some areas they have Airboating.

I remember back in my 20s I had a friend that had recently emigrated to here in Atlanta from England. Once I was chatting with her dad and noticed he had bruised knuckles on his left hand. I asked him about it and he laughed sheepishly, saying that because he was still getting used to the gear shift being on his right, he kept automatically reaching toward the left from muscle memory (he was in his late 40s and had been driving since his teens). And so he was always just basically punching the car door as a result. Poor guy! 😆

The fact that Joel is aware of the slow lane puts him in the top 1% of good drivers in my state. Most of the time I'm yelling at some slowpoke in the fast lane while passing them in the slow lane. That's almost as frustrating as driving down the interstate when in one lane a truck is going 65 mph, and the dude in the fast lane is going 65.2 mph while the speed limit is 75, and you can't pass either of them. I've driven all over the USA and Florida has some of the worst drivers. The roads are generally nice but people will randomly and suddenly make u-turns right into a fastlane, I had never seen so many people running red lights after just a brief stop, and often people will suddenly change lanes without using a signal.
I don't know if it's because there are so many visitors from other places that are confused combined with so many retired people or what but the two weeks I was down there I was about ran into about a dozen times by people suddenly making random moves.
Los Angeles traffic is notorious but they seem to be better drivers, drive fast when they can, and seemed to be in much more control of their cars!

It was absolute chaos with people randomly going from a loose 3 lanes to a tight 6 lanes. Williamsburg is also near and dear to my heart (If you know, you know). In fact, the reason the freeways are called freeways, is because they do NOT have tolls. The highways that do have tolls, are called "toll roads" or "turnpikes". There are also toll bridges in some places, particularly in New England for some reason.

When driving a car, anywhere, sit in the driver's seat roll down the window. Put your arm on the window sill. That is the middle of the road. It a handy trick when you turn onto a new road in a strange place.

To turn right on red, legally you are supposed to make a complete stop then proceed when clear although most people don’t but you can get a ticket if you don’t.

The reason we take a right on red, (unless indicated by a sign). is primarily to conserve fuel and also to keep traffic moving. You can also take a left on red if the street you're turning onto is one-way. The US driver has been allowed (and encouraged), to do this legally since 1977. The Arab oil embargo of 1973 being the impetus of course.

This reminds me of when I lived in England, and at times would have to sit and wait for a car to pass to remember which side of the road I needed to turn onto. Also, ALWAYS turned on my windshield wipers instead of the turn signal at roundabouts…they were on opposite sides of what I was used to.

I rode all over England and Wales on a motorcycle. In a car, you at least have a clue to which side of the road you need to be on, but on a motorcycle it's easy to wander into the right lane without even noticing it. Good thing British drivers are very well trained, or I wouldn't be here today.

In Michigan you can turn both left and right at the red lights, which is both disorienting & terrifying for someone who’s from out of state. Here in Ohio (at least in Columbus anyhow) even U-turns are illegal in most areas but statewide in Michigan they’re totally fine. It’s super difficult to adjust to drastic changes in driving laws. Kudos to you for doing so well 👏🏼😌

So much fun you guys! I liked the comments about Joel trying to use his left foot from being used to driving a manual. I learned to drive on a manual but have mostly driven automatics since. Out of the 30 or so cars I've had in my life time, I've only had 3 manuals. I still enjoy driving them, though, because once you learn, you never forget. Anyway, when I started driving an automatic, it was natural for me to use my left foot for the brake and my right foot for the accelerator. That is not the recommended way, but I've been driving that way for 55 years.

A whole video of two folks driving in a foreign country on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. Loved it! My wife and I did the same thing both when we moved to Japan when she was in the military and when we returned to the States. One drove and the other navigated and kept saying ‘Near Left or Far Right’ for Japan and ‘Near Right and Far Left’ here at home. It was hard to get into the passenger side and not reach up and adjust the mirror. Well Done.

Fun fact. Florida is a state with solid traffic lights and arrow traffic lights 🚦. What’s the difference? It’s legal to turn right on a solid red light and it’s technically not legal to turn right on a red arrow… that’s the only difference but to be honest no one follows or enforces it. Laws are more of a guideline here in FL and we like it that way.
