  • A subscriber asked if a Mustang would be a good first car for a new driver. I discuss the pros and cons of SN95 and S197 Mustangs in this video.
Yes, I'm aware the sound quality at the beginning is poor. Turn up your volume and stick with it; it gets better.
The BEST teen driving program I've found is very affordable and even the most negative students enjoy it. Check for classes near you. putonthebrakes...

My first car in highschool was a 06 V6 Mustang convertible. I put that car through hell! 4.0, automatic. I bought it with 7k miles, and sold it with 109k. Only oil changes, 2 batteries, and tires. Never had an issue. My friends hated it, but the girls loved it! 🤣. Hey I think I owe you a update on my V6 2011 Mustang I got. Thanks for helping me be ok with getting the car. It's a lot of fun to drive. A deer did end up deciding to hit my car out of nowhere in brad daylight and insurance will be fixing that soon and I can't open the door from the outside the passenger door anymore. Thanks Mongrel it's really awesome to drive. I'm using it for Jimmy John's when it's not winter I'm driving like 3k miles a month with the car and it's a lot of fun for that. I took it on a road trip a couple of times as well and it's really nice for that. I notice the elterionci governor that comes with it tops out at 118 on my car. The first time I did a 0-118 it was absolutely insane and was a ton of fun to do that. I just had to get a new set of tires for the car today so it's a good bit better now than the tires that weren't as good before. On my way home from work one day one of my tires exploaded a few days ago and got a spare on it took it home I got a new set today though and it's rated for 65k miles. I won't drive it in the winter but I had to settle for all season tires because it's all I was able to get at the time but they seam to work good. I plan on getting a detail schuded for it sometime on the outside and inside. I don't need one in the engine though because that looked like it was done when I got the car already. Thanks for making me feel better about buying that car that I really wanted. Honestly with how much I was looking for deals and couldn't find anything if I didn't find that last deal I would have honestly gave up on trying to get a Mustang because I was getting really frustrated with it. However it was worth it to be able to finally get the car. By the time I use the car again next year after I put it away I will get a new top for it sense the top was already ripped and had holes in it when I got it. The Deer would have torn that off if I wasn't driving with my top down when that happened. Oh yeah like last month I went to a Tesla show room and got a Test drive on a Standard range Model 3. That car was super fun to drive around for a little bit. Have you ever driven one? If you have not you should schedule a test drive with one. They will let anyone test drive one even if you don't have intention of wanting to get the car or can afford it or anything. My gas bill is a lot at $750 a month but I'm still saving a lot of money each month I feel guilty about the spending on the gas but I really like the car a lot though. Oh yeah the seats in the Tesla are the most comphy things I have ever sat in. Honestly as weird as it would be if it would work I might want to consider getting a Tesla seat and putting it in the driver seat of my car, depending on what I could get one of those seats for and if it would actually even work. With the road trip I took with my friend we just took that car and it ended up being tight on space but we had enough space to get by though so that worked out well for us. You know a few years ago I never thought I would make it through school, or ever get a drivers license or anything in my life or be able to ever live on my own I'm still working on that last one but I hope that does't have to happen for all that much longer and hopefully I can own a house soon and rent out one of the rooms or something or even better buy a like 150k house and put a tiny house on the land next to it and live in the tiny house and rent out the main house fully. If I do that I may end up getting the boxed 50k tiny house for that and put it on there when that time comes. That may take a little while for me to get to that point of being able to do that. but I hope to be able to get to that point as soon as I can. Thanks for everything Mongrel.

Appreciate the update. Sounds like you are on your way. Patience pays off; I just bought my next project car after shopping for nearly 2 years. When you are young it seems like 'life' takes forever but trust me, if you keep at it and are diligent and patient you will get there. I'm in my mid-50s and have a paid for house, four motorcycles and 4 vehicles, all bought with cash. Check out Dave Ramsey and follow his teachings for finances. It works!

    • @wyattpotter2103
      @wyattpotter2103 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Mongrel Motorsports Thanks Mongrel I appreciate that. That's impressive you brought the house in cash as well? That's awesome that's really cool what cars and motorcycle do you have and what have you been shopping for, for 2 years? That's good that you got that to. I've been watching Dave Ramsey for several years actually along with some other people on TH-cam as well. That's awesome man I'm glad that you did all of that. I'm considering getting a second job if I can mentality and physically take it, in order to save up for a house faster to house hack or to save for a house and put a tiny house on it and effectively live on my own while having someone else pay a lot of the expenses of the house as well with the rent. For a while I invested everything I had into index funds and a little bit of a mutual fund in my ABLE account and Roth IRA. I'm still investing some but not much while trying to save for a house as quickly as I can. sense I last time I looked I have a little bit over 31k invested into Stuff like that and I just turned 22 If I never invest anything again at 67 if I can get 8% a year there should be a little over 1.1 million in there at that time. After I get a house I want to go carzy on investing more money after that again. I'm not sure yet if I want to follow Dave's plan of invest 15% and then pay off the house as quickly as possible with the extra money or if I will do a mix of them like invest 25% and then pay off the mortgage quickly or just invest everything I can and don't pay off the house early. I might take a 30 year mortgage so I can invest the difference and at the very least have the option if I get into a hard Finchaly time and could make that a little easier if that situation happened for the emingency fund as well. I want to have the ability to retire a lot sooner than 67 but if I can get 8% on what I have invested and never invest again I should be fine at 67 though. Thanks for everything Mongrel. I hope everything you do goes great for you.

I happen to own a 3.7L V6 Mustang for my first car, it is truly a great car! In drive mode it feels just like any other car and drives great just about anywhere, sport mode holds gears longer and feels faster off the line, there are things to learn about the car such as the fact that the rear wheels spin like crazy on a rainy day, but overall it is amazing and I feel like the power is perfectly balanced.

Hi Tyler. You sound like just the person I made these videos for! My only addition to what I had in my videos is these cars are now getting a little old. Buy the nicest, lowest mileage one you can as it shouldn't cost a whole lot more. Be aware of the potential problems like the chain tensioners, look for oil leaks, etc. These are now a decade older than the VW you just sold. But, they are solid cars and not terribly hard to work on (unlike the VW-Audi stuff). Other than replacing a leaky brake caliper I haven't done anything to mine since making the videos. Parts on Rock Auto are very affordable. After a lifetime of European cars I'm really enjoying my Fords.

I really appreciate the breakdown of the video and what you are promoting. On the other hand i call bullshit on your thoughts in awd and 4x4. Yes generally speaking they help you accelerate but with throttle control and knowledge on how the system works makes a world of difference. Yes most young drivers are not going to have a clue. Yet that is where us as parents with experience have to actually help these kids nowadays. They are clueless. Please dont tell people that a first off v6 mustang is a good starting car. Its a ford fusion with a body kit. 2nd my son got his permit and the first thing i had him drive was my f250 super duty. Guess what he drives whatever he gets in like a champ..

"With throttle control and knowledge". Yes, but virtually no teens receive any training in that. I've instructed teen drivers on skid recovery among other skills. When they left my classes they had better skills than their parents...the people who would otherwise be teaching them how to drive. Judging by your handle you have more knowledge than 98% of the parents out there. Your kid is lucky if that is the case. But it is a rare exception. I'm not nearly as critical about pickups as I am parents giving their kids Jeep Wranglers or Subaru WRXs. I'd never recommend either of those to a new driver. A moderately powered V6 Mustang would be a far better choice.

Had a '98 v6 that was in piss poor condition. Had it for 7 years before I inevitably sold it. I restored and took great care of that car, I learned so much about cars and the auto industry, just because that car got me interested in learning about them. If it wasn't for owning a quote..."cool first car" I wouldn't have ever bothered to learn shit about cars. I now own an '05 3V S197 and I love the damn thing to death. The S197s was my dream car to have. And I am now looking to become an ASE Certified master tech.
As for owning a v6 Mustang as a first car....eh....They aren't super reliable at least not these S197's. Been told you have to rip the whole engine out of these things just to do a timing job (which they're notorious for failing), and the Autos in the S197s aren't all to great either. You're best off with a 3V with a manual.

That's real good advice about perhaps matching the cost thereby giving the kid some real skin in the game. But my "spidey sense" just can't stop tingling at the thought of that blind-spot-filled brute as a "first car". From personal experience I'd say an old Honda Accord might be a good drama-free first learner and also teaching car. I taught my wife and both kids in our '96. Sadly, the so-called "Drivers Ed" courses in our schools are nothing like what I enjoyed in the '70s. There's little or no actual driving practice anymore, so it's either hire a driving school, teach 'em yourself, or a bit of both. I'm a fairly calm heart-beats-twice-a-minute sort of guy, but I won't pretend that Honda's centrally-placed emergency brake lever just there on my left wasn't a comfort or wasn't actually yanked on a couple of occasions to avert disaster. My best tip for those getting a new driver on the road is to bring them to a nice "foresty" state park on a slow weekday with its meandering bendy roads, a maybe 25 mph speed limit, and a few parking lots to practice different types of parking and other manouvers (backing, three-point turns, etc.) Go in a variety of weather conditions. As they get a handle on basic handling and operation, eventually allow them to drive part of the less trafficked way home from the park, and then the whole way home. After that, a few late morning rides out in the country, followed by trips to familiar often-visited locations in and around where you live and then a little highway/interstate practice. No radio and obviously no goddamned phone. Without being overbearing, share your observations and tips as you travel, even when you're driving: "Look well ahead into curves. It helps you get around more elegantly"..."Keep an eye on that asshole who didn't signal his lane change, he's likely to fidget again"...That sort of thing. Oh, and for you other old fossils out there: It ain't "hands on the wheel at 10 and 2" anymore. What with airbags it's now "8 and 4". But you can still wear that onion on your belt...

I had a 2004 V6 mustang for my first car and it was a great little car. I mainly drove it to school and work so I got okay gas mileage and filled up maybe every week and a half. They do look a little more modest than the 05-09 Mustangs which is why I bought one of the older ones. Plus it was way cheaper at the time. I got a premium trim for $4750 with 130k miles in 2015 and sold it around 155k at the end of 2017 to get a Fusion. Here I am a few years later and I traded it in for a 2008 Mustang V6 last August 😂😂 I think they’re super practical for a young driver even though they’re a “sports car.” I would like to believe that the 05-09 Mustangs are a little bit more reliable but that’s just from my personal experience. Maybe drive a beater first, and make mistakes on that first.

Just whatever you do, dont put so much cosmetic stuff on it. People really love to just add sooo many weird things on the v6 especially. Consider preserving the retro throwback look maybe with some subtle changes? it's kinda sad seeing these cars being "abused" like that lol if your going to dump money into it, spend it on a duel exhaust system instead.

I work in the collision repair/insurance industry. I actually see very few Mustangs in hard wrecks so can't really comment one way or the other. You give up strength in any convertible but all cars are built to a minimum standard for the year they are made. I find most Mustangs turn to scrap pretty quickly when they get crashed but they sacrifice themselves/absorb the impact to protect the occupants.

The convertible is heavier because of extra body braving, and for roof structure, there is none. It's a convertible with a few narrow strips of metal for the convertible fabric cover, but unless your driving like a madman, mustangs have a very low center of gravity and are not prone to flipping over, you can buy a after market roll bar to protect the passenger compartment in case of rollover

Has a Lot of torque and it's enoughtly quick for a first car not slow as a corolla but not fast as a GT is the perfect balance between 8-10 seconds average Cars to 5 seconds of sport Cars like the Mustang GT or a Nissan 350z it's a 7 seconds car that enought to drive as a first car, it's the same acceleration of a Civic type R

I bought my 2005 Mustang 4.0L when it was only 4 years old with 36,000 miles. No matter how I drive it, I get 21-22 mpg. Lots of passing power, because they are low geared, so it tops out at 107 mph. You will need snow tires for winter, or you will whip the rear end out from under it in the winter. I love that car and it is my daily driver. I now have 166,000 miles on it. I saw one on youtube with 327,000 miles on it.
