- Welcome back, guys! Today we're welcoming a beautiful new machine to the shop, the Kearney & Trecker 4H Horizontal Mill. While this is not a full restoration video, we go over the many things we did to get it back in prime running condition, along with pictures and video footage of parts of the process. It's always an exciting day here at Vanover Customs when we add a new piece of gear to the lineup, and we hope you enjoy sharing in the excitement.
Thanks to Ron Grundy for lending us his K&T expertise for this project!

THESE machines are probably one of the best machines made. PERIOD!!! YOU STOLE THE MACHINE FELLA.
Thanks yes indeed
@@VanoverMachineAndRepair I just hope one day soon I will find me one. How long did it take you to fixer up VC ?? Nicely done fella too.
Excellent job. Became the most beautiful Milwaukee around. The old girl is in good hands in your shop. Regards from Germany.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful job working my way through your videos. I like the way you do things 👍👍👍
Glad you like them!
16:38 Love the pictures overaid from the rebuild!! .. Really displays the point, seeing how it was at the time!!
Glad you liked it
Congratulations
Thank you
Fantastic rebuild, you pick the perfect colors, and thanks for painting them, see so many just wipe them down and use them,my ocd would strangle me eveytime I used it. now I know why the arbor press was on hold.
Yes indeed. The arbor press video is done just being edited and will start rolling out slowly.
I love your videos! You're really caring for old machines, which sadly isn't common nowadays...
Thanks. Yeah I love old machines
Great looking machine. You did a nice job restoring that one.
Thank you
Love this. Keep up the videos on the old equipment.
Thanks! Will do!
4:11 .. It looks Fantastic!! .. Love the paint job! ,, It reminds me of the mid 1960's Super Sport cars from GM, before they were "Muscle Cars" .. just lean machines, that got the job done in spades!! :) Ace of Spades!! :)
Indeed
Great restoration. You’re incredibly motivated. I’m still plugging away on my Colchester round head lol. Keep up the great work.
Thank you
Great man . Nice to be simple .
Thanks 👍
thank you for sharing !
My pleasure!
Oh man...that k and t looks amzing. I just acquired a 2k not too long ago. I would love for my machine to look as great as yours...keeping posting videos of putting this big boy to use as i love to see it working in action and it will give me ideas on how to use mine.
Thanks. I appreciate it. More videos to come!
Very nice restoration.
Thank you very much!
This is the first of your videos that I have seen. They have popped up from time to time, but I have yet to have the opportunity to actually watch them. I am a regular viewer of Keith and Steve. To make a long post less so, I am impressed by the 4H and your attention to its restoration.
Thank you sir
What a beautiful machine. Will last you the rest of your lifetime.
Indeed
I just got a 14” Cincinnati dividing head. It is so big in my mill, after seeing this that must be what it was made for!
Yes quite possibly
Nice K&T. 👍
thank you
Show the tooling sometime… great job
Good idea thanks
I can't wait to see this line boring job you're talking about.
It’s coming
20:00 IDK!!!?? :) .. most people would have sourced a stock rubber "boot" of an off road shock absorber, to fit!! :) .. Great job! .. I've worked on brass and copper, plumbing fittings at great lengths .. I cannot imagine combining that with the accuracy needed for a milling machine part!! :)
There was a rubber boot on there I didn’t like the look 🤣
I am extremely impressed with your Model 4H. I'm a subscriber of Keith Rucker and as you may know he recently acquired a Model 3H. He also rebuilt many of the shafts and splines on his Cincinnati Boring machine, similar to what you had to do on the 4H. I'm going to watch for a K&T Model 4H for sale too. Thank you.
Absolutely glad you like it
Just a suggestion, But i would make a half shaft instead of hanging that bar so far out. especially having long hair! there is also the very minute possibility that when spinning fast enough the centrifical force will cause it to bend and whip. I know it seems far fetched being such a large bar but i can already see the end oscillating in the video. Excellent restoration and beautiful machine!
Good suggestion bar was long for another project but yes ideally one of every size is ideal. In time
Beautyfull machine. The extra long boring bar makes me a little nervouse though, be safe, don't get your clothes near it. Great videos
Will do
A lot of nice wok done there to get it back in service - including re-work of vice. Suspect you will get many hours of good jobs out of that.
Yea indeed. I am hoping for many years of service to come
Fascinating review of the remedial work done on a great mill. We had some very new CNC machines and some very old machines that were taken care of and still held a tight tolerance. The work on the mill is a good investment, as long as you can get work for it, really nicely done. How many times have you hit your head on the overhanging tool spindle ? Good post, thank you 👍
Yes indeed. I haven’t hit my head yet, but I’m sure it will happen.
4:22 One thing Old Iron has, that aluminum and zinc casting do not??? .. Patience!! ... The K&T has seen it all .. and it does not mind waiting it's turn!! .. It will step up and get the job done when it's needed!!
Exactly
Hermosa fresadora amigo se ve de buena calidad es todo un poder espero hacer una reparación asi cuando tenga mi primer torno muy bueno lo que hiciste con esa fresadora 🙏🙏👍
Thank you

When i was an apprentice back in the 60's here in England there were 2 mills in the apprentice school that were very similar to this one except they were Cincinnati's. They had the vertical heads making them very versatile and were my favourite mills to use.
Was this design style common when they were first built ?
Yeah I think it was
I'm new to your channel, so much good stuff to catch up on!!.. It seems to close to the wall?? I certainly do not have a ton of hours on any Horizontal Mill .. but it's nice to work with the vice close to the mill for rigidity?? NO?
It is to close to the wall. But I need the space in front and I just remove the arms when they are in the way
Awesome work! Did I miss the part where you talked about the paint you used? I’m always looking for better options than Rustoleum for my old machines!
Rust oleum professional grade enamel. It takes forever to dry but is super durable.
@@VanoverMachineAndRepair that’s exactly what I use. It’s really good stuff!
What was the process for painting the castings? Removal and paint? looks great.
Yeah no bondo on that one just scaling and paint rust oleum enamel
Just curious, why does the bore have such a big stickout, won't this cause flex/vibrations?
For clearance
I watched your video on restoring the American lathe. You stated that you had the feed and gear chart remade. Where did you have this done.
Fast signs
👍👍
Thanks
Does it come with milling arbor?
Yea
Hi Vanover! Can I come see your shop? I’m in Skokie! Would love to meet a fellow machinist in the area like you!
Yes, of course do a Google search you’ll find our business name and my phone number is right there.
what is the serial number on this machine?
Not sure why
not sure i understand @@VanoverMachineAndRepair
