Finally someone... noticed that 15second no breathing xD
3 years on and this is still the best analysis of the performance. I think you were one of the first to notice the 15s phrase. Others are still reacting to this. This video is so buried though, it's hard to find.

Christian Chen yes. Their agility are the best. Katrina got an amazing agility to her runs, But it all comes down to who's got the girly, more feminine tone. And that's why some people can easily fall in love to morissette's voice. It's people's preference that would differ the two.

I can't agree more! Absolutely I love every pause he made coz I know he enjoyed the voice of Mori same thing I do everytime! He definitely knows his stuff! He is too intelligent when it comes to music even without relying to piano or some devices to determine the notes Mori was hitting! Geez!

That 90's ballad song/singer has been a mainstay of Filipino music for several decades now (since the 70's I think). I would even say it's a minimum standard of what you should be able to do if you want go be recognized as a good singer in our local music scene. I know that in the US there are a LOT of underrated singers and it is really unfortunate that they aren't more popular.
Her performance at Asia Song Festival should be next! Singing and belting in freeezing environment in front of hundred thousand people , just see it for yourself!

and I enjoyed your breakdown. Bravo! There is a recent video with Morissette at a pool party. She and a friend race underwater the length of the pool. Morissette makes it almost to the end of the pool underwater! Clearly she has some major lung capacity! I wish a foreign language ballad like this would take off as much as something like Despicito.. one can only dream 😞
I think some singers here are trained at a young age to sing with water up to their neck, it gave them intense breathing exercise. For example is Regine Velasquez, her Dad would trained her that way. And I think other “conteseras/conteseros”(singers that competes in a singing competitions) went through that kind of training too because most of the places here are surrounded with bodies of waters or if they live far from the beach, they would be submerged in a big barrel of water and sing.

I don’t think popular songwriting appreciates real singing in pop music anymore. Like when was the last time we’ve even heard a power ballad on the radio? What’s left of labels don’t have these production teams with musicians with deep songwriting skills. So they really don’t look for the talent to fit something they don’t support. This singer was great btw. I like when you bring new talent to attention.
Mochafairiemonster I agree with you, the only two singers I can think of that can just stand and sing and are very popular is Adele and Sam Smith, both of whom don’t hold a candle to Morissette vocal range, but still pretty good ballad singers.
InSideTheBind I think Kelly Clarkson is also in that category. she'll have background singers and sometimes A,few dancers, but she just chills at the mic and sings!
We might hear mori sing here in the US, last I heard she just signed a contract with mariah carey's old producer which is also kelly clarkson's old producer. He was at mori's last concert in the Philippines.

Sir if you could also notice before the whistle note, it is the same breath that she took before she released the whistle. She belted then boom, the whistle note. And yes, that 15-second phrase is not just a phrase, SHE IS BELTING AS F*** AS WELL! I really admire her as a singer and wished i could also sing like her.

Her low notes here are good. She has inconsistency in other songs but this one is good. She can hit low notes real good depends on how relax her voice is when she performs.

She's amazing! Even if she doesn't have the best lower register she still has a beautiful and versatile instrument. It's pretty much expected since she's a soprano. Her breath control is amazing! I love the openness and power of her voice.

Like most people I was very shocked and impressed with the whistle register coming out of nowhere... BUT! I am blown away by the next part where she belted for 15 seconds and it wasn't just holding a note or two, she was doing runs all that time. Oh my god!
