    Hi, thanks for the awesome videos on fault finding and diagnosing faults and manual operation of the soft top
    There is one part of the Open operation that you didn’t cover
    I’ll run through the sequence for my 2005 CLK55 A209
    1. Hit open
    2. Windows go down
    3. Windscreen lock release
    STAGE 1: Cylinders 3 and 4 are activated to raise the compartment cover lid until switch S84/19 registers that the bow has released from the lid and switch S84/13 registers that the lid is no longer in the closed position.
    STAGE 2: Cylinder 2 is activated to release the front latch. Switch S84/11 registers that the roof is no longer locked, and S84/18 registers that the roof is still in the catch position.
    STAGE 3: Cylinders 5 and 6 are activated to raise the rear glass (bow).
    Bow goes up fully upright. I am assuming Switch S84/15 has registered that the bow is now in the fully upright position. How do I test that.
    6. That’s it, I can hear relays clicking but cylinders 3 &4 don’t run or raise the compartment lid at all
    I’ve checked all of the physical parts and can’t see any broken limits or such
    Would appreciate your advice
    Thanks, keep up the good work in your tutorials

      Hi all, I'm really stuck and hoping someone can give me some pointers? CLK280 2006. On openong the roof the fornt clamps released and roof opened 1/2 inch then stopped. was close enough for me to use the allen key to secure the roof again (thanks for that tip Klaus).
      Current situation is that on trying to open the roof, windows go down, then nothing. If boot separator is open, the separator warning comes up. Clears when separator in place so I presume that is not the issue.
      I have checked the fluid level and it's ok.
      I have checked the 40A fuse and it's ok.
      I sent it to a garage that couldn't find a solution. They provided me with 2 error codes;
      B1928 -limit switch interlock of soft top compartment cover remains in switched condition
      B1953 - limit switch interlock of soft top lock fails to switch
      I've followed Klaus's helpful vidos on manually opening the roof and checking all the microswitches.
      All seem to be clicking correctly. I alos took off the first relay on the pump and checked it. All OK. Haven't got to the 2nd relay yet - was fiddly to release so left it for now.
      While I had the roof maually open and compartment cover was slightly open, I couldn't resist pressing the roof open/close button. Got very excited when the pump engaged and the roof started to move. Stopped after a second or two but perhaps enough to suggest its not pump failure perhaps? Note that the pressure relief valve was open at that point.
      I've tried manually opening the roof fully, closing the relief valve and pressing the close button. Again no movment. Put it all back to where I started and its back ot where I started - windows open, then nothing.
      I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I'd be happy to break into the wiring harness that goes to the pump to see what sigals the pump is getting if I knew wich lines to test.
      Any help would be greatly appreciated!
      Thanks, Mark

    Klaus, I have purchased your rebuilt cylinders before and I am very satisfied. These videos are the cat's meow!. But I found myself somewhat confused where you identified S84/22 near the forward storage compartment just ahead of the Tonn Cover, then later on identifying it as S84/11. You then stated that the same switch S84/11, is on the front header panel above the steering wheel. Also I am not as familiar w/ Mercedes, so when you performed the latch adjustment it was difficult to determine if you were in the front or rear of the vehicle due to the close up video shot. Thanks for the videos however.

    Hey Top Hydraulics - can you help me please, i'm going crazy!!!? My 2004 CLK320......top goes down as usual, then won't close, doesn't even try, just states "visit workshop" - First diagnosed a broken S84/22......so replaced, but still the same error??? I then replaced S84/15 as it seemed to be happy to close the roof again if it didn't open past about three quarters open. Changed the switch, again, no fix! I've checked fuses (but as pump operates, so not likely) and I have switched around the yellow relays - still no change. Just to state have owned the car 1 year and roof has worked well. Fluid level correct in the reservoir, so no leaks. I've even taken the rear to bits to check S84/3.....which is undamaged and appears to work correctly. A recent scan on an Autel professional diagnostic tool saw no errors on the roof control module. I double checked S84/13 by jumping the wires as I could do this whilst trying to operate the hood and again, the switch tests good as no change. Been quoted £500 to diagnose by a company 3 hours drive away......car isn't worth fixing if thats my only option - can we save this lovely old 320CLK.....it only has 75k miles!

      First of all, thank you so much for your help and your interest. It's a 2005 Mercedes Benz 209 CLK class 1.8l SFI. When I pull the opening switch (CAN controlled) the convertible top doesn't move. After this the scan tool reads the following codes: B1870 the output stage or servomotor of rear lock is defective. B1962 The power closing limit switch fails to switch or has a short to circuit 30. At the trunk lid latch, i measured two micro switches, one goes to rear SAM 10/2 and the second to the convertible roof module N52. Both switches are pulling a voltage of 3.6 V coming from the modules to a ground. When i move the roof manually i cannot open the trunk, so everything works fine. I don't understand why the car doesn't notice this. Now I think I made a mistake and measured on the wrong part, perhaps I misunderstood the fault codes. @@TopHydraulics

    Hello Klaus, I believe I have a leak in my convertible clk200 from 2004. the top opens and closes well in 23 seconds. the point is that after 5 or 6 openings the oil level drops to a minimum. I think I must have an oil leak. I already looked for the oil leak in the trunk of the car and I didn't see anything. I would like to know if I can open the top only halfway to try to find the leak. Is there any inconvenience in stopping the opening process halfway through?

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It i s okay to stop the opening or closing process part way. Hard to find leaks are usually from the main lift cylinders, as the fluid collects under the rear seat or in the rocker panels before it drips to the ground. The main lift cylinders typically leak first from the bottom, through the bottom mounting hole.

    Good video, I have a w209 my problem of late is when i’am closing the top the very last closure operation when the rear lid suppose to go down flat and the rear window locks down into position, you can hear the motors working but it won’t do the complete closure. But when I open the roof I have no problem with the rear lid locking back down. Any advice would be appreciated.

      Thanks for asking. Please give us a little more detail about the closing sequence:
      Does the tonneau cover move forward exactly to the position where it would be able to receive the rear bow (rear section of the soft top)?
      Does the rear bow come down? If so, how far?
      Has someone recently replaced the top lock cylinder, or has any other work been done to the top system lately?

    Very helpful. Quick question, I operated my roof yesterday with no problem. Today, nothing. On operating today, my dashboar says roof in operation, but nothing is moving. Where is the fuse or relay for this?

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for asking. You are probably on the right track, as nothing moving on the top and no warning about the skibag (luggage divider) in the instrument cluster normally indicates a blown fuse. It could be a bad relay, but that is rare.
      There are two yellow relays next to the pump, attached to the pump's mounting frame. It would be smart to check the fuse first. The fuse is mounted in a small black enclosure (junction box) behind the driver side rear wheel well, practically in front of the pump. There are two fat wires going from the pump's wiring harness to this junction box. These are the red power wire and the black ground wire. The fuse is a flat 40A fuse going to the red power wire. It is not always easy to see whether the fuse is blown or not, which is why I find it easier to use a multimeter. Set your multimeter to DC Volts, have one probe go to ground (for example, the pump's mounting frame) and have the other probe go to the post that the red power wire is bolted to in this junction box. If there is no voltage on that post, then your fuse is blown. A blown fuse is a sure sign of a bad pump motor. Top Hydraulics rebuilds the pumps (their part numbers are A2098000548 or A2098000648, and the numbers printed on the pump are 2098000030, 2098000130 or 2098000330).
      The following link shows the location of the junction & fuse box for the pump's power and ground connection: th-cam.com/video/c6WQQG_s-jQ/w-d-xo.html. It is min 0:26 of our pump removal video. If you pause the video right there, then you see the pump in the middle and a threaded post with power wires on it a little higher up and forward of the pump, just before the carpeted panel covers the right side of the image. The threaded post is one of the two posts in the junction bow I referred to, and the fuse is bolted to it.

    • @chrisdaviesguitar
      @chrisdaviesguitar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your reply, came across your response by accident as I am still researching the problem. The thing is, this also happened to me last year. One day, the roof working the next day not, I get dashboard message the roof in operation, all the windows opened but that was it, this is why I think it's either a fuse or the relay again.
      I took it to a MB specialist who charged me £198 for apparently tracing and replacing a faulty 'resistor fuse' on the pump? So was assuming they meant a relay. Could you confirm the existence of e resistor fuse?

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisdaviesguitar "Resistor fuse" is not a proper term. The only fuse for the pump is the one I pointed out in my earlier response, and I am copying that portion of my response again:
      "The following link shows the location of the junction & fuse box for the pump's power and ground connection: th-cam.com/video/c6WQQG_s-jQ/w-d-xo.html. It is min 0:26 of our pump removal video. If you pause the video right there, then you see the pump in the middle and a threaded post with power wires on it a little higher up and forward of the pump, just before the carpeted panel covers the right side of the image. The threaded post is one of the two posts in the junction bow I referred to, and the fuse is bolted to it."
      If you had a blown fuse a year ago, then it was bound to blow again, because the root cause lies in your pump's electric motor being bad. The fuse does not blow on a good pump motor.
      If you had a bad relay instead, that would likely have been caused by a bad pump motor drawing too much current and damaging the relay. Chances are higher that you had a bad fuse, though.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P.S. The fuse is a MIDI 40A fuse.

    Mine starts to open, then the top sets back down and the claws close down while the back is partially open. The top doesn't move past just popping open.
    It goes until it seems to get stuck. I hear the pump still trying to pump, until I let off the switch. Then it won't continue again, unless I start to close it then try to open it again. I guess you can say, mine gets stuck when the back window is straight up. The cover behind it is only up about 2 to 3 inches.
    Mine starts to lift that section behind the window and stops. So it gets a little further than where you had the window up and the back section was down. Mine is up at the back, but the front of the section behind the window is loose, but doesn't go up.

      There are some plastic arms suspended under the bottom rear of the tonneau cover that push down on the soft top as the cover closes, which in turn makes enough room for the cover to close. Take a close look under the cover as it close to see what might be askew there...

    Hi there, loving these videos 👍🏻😎 Is there a similar video for troubleshooting A208 micro switch issues?! I have the issue where roof was working fine then the only thing that happens now is the windows go down and that is it!
    The roof switch slowly flashes and the headrest switch doesn’t work at all or light up in anyway. Found a blown 15A blue fuse in the boot fuse box and replaced it but this has made no difference. The only thing was the very first time I tried to operate the roof the case cover latch made a noise as if it was trying to release but couldn’t, could that have blown the motor, relay or a different fuse?! Hoping someone can help, thanks in advance 😖

    Thank you for the video. My A207 has the problem of bow not raising after the lid unlocks and go to the catch position. I would have to manually raise the bow and the trunk lid up then I can continue in auto.
    During Closing, it is also the bow not being able to raise up and kicks out the sequence.
    The weird thing is that the bow is pressurized during the closing but not during the raising/extending. Do you think it would be a bad cylinder or bad valve?
    I checked the resistance on the solenoids, all read good resistance.

    The soft top and windows of our 1999 clk 320 work intermittently. When the windows don't work, neither does the top. Often times, after a 20 - 30 minute drive, the light on the console panel goes off and everything is operational. We think it is a wiring problem in the console. What is you opinion on our problem. Thank you so much for offering such complete information.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking. You actually have an A208 chassis CLK, which is different from the one shown in this video. The windows won't work if the computer things the top is not fully open or fully closed. If you have a light on in the console while you are driving, then it is more likely that the computer reads the top is not fully latched. Do you get this problem also when driving with the top down? If so, then we can likely isolate the problem fairly quickly.

    My 2007 CLK 550's top has always worked until a few days ago when I picked up the car from a transmission repair shop. They told me that they never touched the convertible top. I am getting the message that the partition must be closed but I cannot move the partition one way or the other... I have actually never moved it in the 5 years that I have owned this car. It just won't budge from the closed position. The only thing to note is that after I try to open the top and I get the message, I then press on the button downward as to close the top and I hear something moving in the back and then it stops. The Hydraulic pump liquid is a little bit over the minimum limit (I checked). Please let me know, what I may check next... Much appreciate.

      @TopHydraulics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for asking. The movement of the partition is not intuitive. The first time I tried to move it, I pushed in the wrong direction. It hinges on top, and the bottom part flips forward. It is normal for the struts on the partition to have loast their charge at this age, regrdless of whether they have been used or not. I would try one more time to open and close the partition, so that you can verify the operation of the micro switch.

The boot won’t open with the remote and the rear window defrosting is not working. I checked all wires that run on the boot area and seemed ok. If I manually open the roof it will close and work with the hydraulics and everything works until I move the car a few meters then all the problems start again, any suggestions? Thank you.

    Curious did you show switch s84/3 in this video? Is this a switch that commonly breaks ? Would this cause a problem of the compartment cover going down to finish the opening sequence? Thanks for taking your time out your day. My top opens and stops at the point where compartment cover has to go down… when closing the top goes up 1/4 of the way and then stops. So my next step I manually pull the rest of the top closed until it gets to the windshield. Right after I go back and press the tops operating switch and it locks the lid close as well as finishes the closing sequence. sorry if I’m not clear. Clk 2004

    My Autel says 225 limit switch soft top bow in catch position NO, whether it's up or down. 224 and 226 shows up or down, but it doesn't activate the catch position either way. It seems to stop here. Should it activate for the next step? And where would that catch position be? The windiw goes up and down, no more.
    Well, after turning off the key and the pressure releases, then I push the rear section closed, the soft top bow catch position reads YES. I have to close it manually.
    Okay, final edit, I hope. Now it works. I tried the windows reset, then it opened all the way again. Then when closing it, it paused a while, but I kept the button forward, then it started going closed. Untill the back cover was straight up and didn't go down. It was stuck there. I got out and pushed it forward a bit, then got back in the car to push the button forward and it finished closing. So I tried it again, to get it to the stuck point again, to take a picture of where I think the problem is, but it continued all the way closed. LOL
    I did decide to take the manual straps off the rear hinges, just to see if that helped. Not sure if it did, but that's when it decided to work. I alsow replaced the right rear hinge, as the plastick center piece broke when trying to manually open it. But I guess everything was just getting all stuck. The first time trying to manually open it was very difficult and became easier as I kept working on it. I guess I need to keep everything well lubed up.
    Now that it works, my wife will be happy. Now I have to put all the black stuff back in the sides of the trunk. She was getting upset and wanted to sell the car and buy another convertible that works. LOL
    Well, had to get out a few times to move the rear cover forward a little at a time, untill it finished going closed. So maybe it's that switch on the rear left cylinder?

      @TopHydraulics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for asking. Is this happening pretty much exactly when the top is in the highest position? When the top is in the highest position and gets retracted some more, the load on the pump changes. At first, the pump had to work hard to pull the top off the windshield. Then it becomes very easy to pull back the top as it almost falls by itself. In that particular position, a valve inside the pump can be responsible for the problem. However, before spending a bunch of money on a pump exchange, you may want to double check the micro switches shown in this video just to make sure they don't create an illogical readout which tells the controller to stop moving the top.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be either the pump motor drawing too much current and blowing the 40A fuse or could be the relays on the pump motor. Check the 40A fuse behind the left rear wheel well first, see th-cam.com/video/08R8E3Sc0oQ/w-d-xo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB If the fuse is blown, then the pump motor is burnt out or the pistons in the pump are frozen, making the motor draw too much current. If the fuse is good, then you might be lucky enough to have a bad relay at the pump. Only one relay fails at a time (and the contacts only fail in activated mode), but there are two identical ones. One relay makes the pump motor turn clockwise when activated, the other one makes it turn counterclockwise. Thus, the cheap test in this case would be to swap the two relays for each other and see if the pump starts turning. Both relays need to be in place for this test, but you swap one for another. Again, the latter will only work if the 40A is not blown.

      Dear Klaus,
      I couldn’t find today an electrician so I tried myself to swap the yellow relays (i didn’t measure the fuse but i thought, maybe wrongly and with some risk of damaging that if the fuse was broken i woudn’t damage any electric parts).
      When I switched it 1) windows down 2) the tonneau made the movement 3) the back window went up and 4) the tonneau fully opened. No more. And then when I tried to close it obviously didn’t do anything so with an openned tonneu I tried to reach those relays and swap them again, which I managed, 30 celsius, under the sun, fortunately I have very long arms. It was a nightmare. I called Mercedes parts and tomorrow morning i will have 2 new relays. The million dollar question is if with te teo new relays (i know one would be enough, anyway) my top will do the full motion it is supposed to do. Are the limit switches S849 not working due to a collision with something in the trunk that touched the cover compartment? Do I have to go to the repair shop or can I fix the problem myself. Unfortunately, my husband has two left hands (German saying). Thanks for your help in advance and best regards from Germany.

    Hello, keep doing such a great work, when i try go open the top it sais top in operation but nothing happens, although when i press the button down i can hear the pump for a few seconds. Do you a possible solution for this one?

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking. Start out with swapping the two relays on the pump. If that changes the symptoms, then you know you have one bad relay.

    • @ioannisrinakis9672
      @ioannisrinakis9672 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I swapped the two relays but it keeps doing the same things, when i used a multimeter the 40 amp fuse doesn't seem to get any electricity because neither the left or the right pole shows something on the multimeter

      @@ioannisrinakis9672 In your original question, you wrote "when i press the button down i can hear the pump for a few seconds". In your second question, you wrote "I swapped the two relays but it keeps doing the same things". If you can hear the pump running, then there is power at the 40A fuse.

      Yes you are right, my mistake, the fuse is ok. Although i swaped the relays but i still have the same problem, when i press up the button top in operation is shown and when I press it down i can hear the pump for a few seconds.

    Hi there, got a 2003 clk320, I saw in the comments that someone had a similar problem that you replied to but they never got back to you so the problem didn't get resolved here.
    Almost 12 months since I last opened the roof, opened fine, tried to close it, nothing! no pump noise, light blinks red on the switch, message, visit workshop, found your vids, got it closed manually.
    Tentatively tried to open it again and seems to want to, didn't let it though, getting late. I did notice that where you put the straps through to manually open that compartment, one of the plastic levers on the right hand hinge is broken, (UK spec) does this operate a switch? and could that be the fault? or is to that everything is so tight/seized, because that compartment cover seemed hellish stiff to move.
    Anyway great vids, hopefully I'm not to late to the party :)

      @@rustynail6363 The VIN confirms that you have the newer style case cover cylinders with the release buttons on the bottom, so that eliminates the concern that you might have an early production version with the obsolete case cover cylinders that seize.
      The plastic lever in the hinge does not operate any switch. It is very hard to move the compartment cover manually in the first place. When the cover moves unevenly, maybe caused by a plastic piece getting stuck on one side, that increases the chances that the micro switches get damaged which indicate ‘compartment cover in catch position’ and ‘compartment cover closed’. They would be my first suspects - check them out!

    Thank you Klaus! My A2098201910 Limit Switch, Left, keeps breaking, (casing cracks). Any idea why? The Limit Switch is properly seated and the torx screw is tight.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would appear that your case cover is not moving evenly. The most common reason is air in the system from a leaking actuator, or it could be something binding in the case cover's linkage (check the hinges), or it could be one of the case cover lift cylinders having a lot more internal friction than the other one. Check the fluid level in the pump first, then check the linkage and hinges, then observe whether the case cover comes down a little tilted to one side.

      The part number for the gas struts is printed on the struts. It is 2096900059. We don't sell them, but there are plenty of aftermarket suppliers if you don't want to buy directly from Mercedes. Simply google the part number.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely, the "compartment cover closed" micro switch on the right side of the storage compartment is not giving the signal that the cover is closed all the way, see th-cam.com/video/ZLIdoiw_KTY/w-d-xo.html This could be because the switch is broken, or it could be because something is in the way of it getting triggered. Check it out while the cover is open...
