    The best advice was from Chrome on Vancity Vanlife. He said don't buy anything in advance. Buy it as you need it. He was so right, but did I follow his advice? Of course not! ;-) I learned the hard way. I donated things to Goodwill THREE times on my 8 week trip across the country recently. I learned a lot though. I brought an embarrassing amount of clothes too. OMG, next time, I can get by on about 6 t shirts instead of 25. Oy vey. Live and learn.

      Yes. I agree 100 % with Chrome. Smart!!!

    Showers are a cultural tradition, and it takes awhile to learn we can get clean with just a wash cloth. As a long-time backpacker, I learned showers are a fabulous luxury, but not necessary to actually get clean.

    You learn real fast what is not needed when you down size from a class c to a mid sized truck with a large camper shell. LOL Buying mostly collapsible kitchen wear and the 1 burner stove allowed me to go from 2 totes to 1!

    For me it was my two burner stove. Putting a large skillet on one burner makes the second burner almost useless. Big one skillet meals are just easier for me

      i've ended up keeping two small multi-fuel burners. i often keep one outside hooked to propane for popcorn and such, and one inside with a butane cannister for morning coffee. easier to store two small things than one large one, and i always have a backup if one goes bad.

    • @coralieofjumpwithnofear
      @coralieofjumpwithnofear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, yes! Same! A two burner takes up so much for half of it hardly ever being used.

    oooh i respectfully beg to differ on the tennis racket bug zapper, which i literally had to put down to type this 😁. i'm on my second one in 7 years on the road. a regular flyswatter is good for outside flies and such (mine is leather lol) but when it's tiny tiny gnat season like right now in the desert, and a fly swatter is utterly futile for old eyes, you can just gracefully wave the zapper around your head and get the job done. and i never use a regular swatter inside because i prefer to sweep up fried bugs versus scraping them off my surfaces.
    what a goofy comment hey? 😁

    • @OJesusX3
      @OJesusX3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not goofy at all! 😊 Even being a young guy, I personally enjoy electric fly swatters, for much the same reason. ❤️🌎✌️

    I’ve had the benefit of slowly building out my van. Having been out on a few trips, I bought the things that I needed and was missing during those trips. It’s a work in progress, but becomes more refined with each trip.

    • @LadyBugout
      @LadyBugout  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For hand washing I reuse a liquid dish soap bottle. I fill it with water, at camp I keep it out on a table in a black bag so it gets warm. Dispensiing it by squeezing through the small opening at the top does not waste much water! The small amount of dish soap left in the container isn't enough to leave my hands feeling soapy.

  • @4yellowwolf

    Great topic! I just gave away so many items I thought I’d need for my van life. Turns out, I didn’t need them. Now I have room.
    The best suggestion I have found is to travel in your van first and purchase items as you need them ? This will save you tons of cash 💰.

    Long ago my family adopted the following credo: If you need it, find it, if you can't find it adapt, if you can't adapt, learn to do without.
    It's mind boggling how much a person thinks they need vs. how much they really need.

    Need is a very strong word. That being said, if I brought everything I think we MIGHT need, there would be no room for me. The one thing we don't have with us seems to be what we do need. Go figure! Found it interesting that the one thing I have been thinking our little bus is missing, a shower was mentioned twice as not necessary. Now don't feel so bad that we don't have one.

    Completely agree with the guy who said no need for a TV ! I'm not a NOMAD ,yet cuz searching for "my" cargo van ( or something better ) so I can sell my 2008 TOYOTA SOLARA Convertible !! & Easily create my home on wheels ! ) I've lived with no TV since 2010 ! see one when in other's homes caring for pets. Have only my Android phone with Verizon service. Maybe will buy a laptop later. Must get myself out in Nature more. I live now in a Tiny house I'm renting. Time to leave since rent raised ,grocery prices up more & more etc.
    Gas ⛽ is expensive. However with NO rent ,I know I can still travel enough ! Even in NATURE ,storms do not last forever ! This too shall pass 💜 ! I AM PEACE WITHIN all Matters !

    Hi Dee, once again you've presented another important how-to video. I'm in the process of loading my van initially and already know there is too much. Is this denial, I ask myself? It seems I'm trying to take my old life into the new van life. It's not the Instant Pot, Vita-Mix, minimal cookware, or convection toaster oven (or maybe it is), but the excess clothes, kitchen gadgets, books, more art supplies than I'll ever use, etc. Oh yes and food that fills the precious few four overhead cupboards in this small Solis Pocket. Well, there will be serious elimination b4 hitting the road, I guarantee, thanks to your helpful review from seasoned nomads. Gratefully, Diane

My body literally just shots down which is not healthy, not to mention that I tent camp mostly in bear territory and I don’t want to startle a bear at night going to the supplied toilets (it happened, muck charge that scared me) Amazon has one that’s just the metal square frame with a tarp with zipper that hangs down from a tree giving you privacy, takes hardly any space or weight, use it for showers or privacy for the toilet. Hope this helps.

    Regarding Brock the Aussie and his "annoying curtain", I'm trying out hanging my blackout curtain under the sun visors. This gives me access to driver's seat and all the stuff I have up front in place of the passenger seat, and still be stealthy-ish. I have not seen many examples of this so far. I'm also able to use less fabric as it hangs to just below the dash, not down to the floor. I'm interested in seeing how his wall turns out!

    Even though i see so many ppl saying this, i still struggle to understand the whole shower situation. Right now im in a micro camper (Kangoo) so i dont have a shower anyway, but i can def see myself building a shower inside the van if my vehicle was bigger. Even if its just a stow away shower pan....i cant imagine not having it...

      @@LadyBugout true. I guess it also strongly depends on where you are. Hi Dee. Sorry my auto Correct called you Didi. when you first bought your Noggle did it have a strong chemical odour coming through the tube. What actually is in underneath the fabric. I’ve got a chemical sensitivity so I couldn’t endure a toxic plastic smell coming through it do you know what it’s made of.

    • @LadyBugout
      @LadyBugout  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I recall. It seems like some type of wire (like a slinky almost) with fabric over it and then another layer of fabric over that. Sorry I can’t explain it better. Maybe the Amazon description says more about what it’s made of.🤓

      a lot of us put the used tp in a ziplock just like when hiking, and then toss when full. personally i don't buy tp anymore. a half sheet of good paper towel works just as well, without having to take up space in the van with two different bulky paper products. and paper towel has many other uses while tp has ~butt~ one 😁.

    • @carmenmartinez2882

      Pee cloth, use, wash, reuse. That’s what we use backpacking. TP only for #2. We’re not going to carry big rolls of TP on our backs. Use only for pee though.
