The Great Race is a very funny movie. Jack Lemmon as Professor Fate was great. Vivian Vance played a suffragette and the wife of a newspaper editor and was very good.
Jack Lemon s' campness in the role made myself reminded me of his Daphne character in 'Some Like It Hot' (the presence of Tony Curtis also made me feel reminiscent of 'Some Like It Hot' too in honesty.)
Aw, Betty White and her beloved husband Alan have been happily reunited. I love Vivian as well - I treasure an early, 1974 playbill (from an off-Broadway play she did) with her autograph - along with an "I Love Lucy" heart which she drew in. Also loved Jim Backus - the delightful Mr. Magoo. Cheers to all!
Whether the truth or not, Jim Backus told this story. He either got a mash note of phone call from Marilyn Monroe, she just had to meet him in person. He told his wife Henny about it, and she said, "If it were any other woman, I'd be jealous... but Marilyn Monroe! You've got to do this!" So Jim met her privately, and what Marilyn wanted was Jim to talk like Mr. Magoo.
@@TheYellowTulips I was going to mention that but you beat me do it! Lucy was a widow with kids on "The Lucy Show" and her housemate & best friend Vivian a divorced mother.
On the order of "bough" and not "cough", perhaps a regional pronunciation. (On the order of "through" it ought to be pronounced "true.") Despairing over English orthography, GB Shaw noted that "fish" ought to be spelled "ghoti." Perhaps "trough" ought to be spelled "troff."
I like Alan's look of amazement or disapproval at some of the rather lame clues or answers given by the players. He's part of the show, more than an MC. I don't think you see that too much on game shows.
@Christopher Bingham Jack Clark left when Bob Stewart left "Password" to form his own production company, and Jack was the announcer on some of his shows (the announcer you hear here is Lee Vines).
It is painful to watch this episode! Back in the original incarnation of Password, I wonder what measures were employed to screen the viability of contestants?
Vivian Vance@6:10 mentioned the word curmudgeon. Later she said I KNOW what a curmudgeon is!! I WONDER if she was referring to her old co star William Frawley (Fred Mertz of I Love Lucy) of whom she detested??!! Hmmm.. . ...
I think Penny married a Roosevelt. Her name was Priscilla Reynolds…later Priscilla Roosevelt. Expert lecturer and author of Russian History. Yes, I googled. Lol!
The one thing that I did not like about the show was during the "Lightning Round" Allen did not help matters any with his constant interrupting them when they were trying to give clues. He should have kept quiet and let them play.
Priscilla (Penny) Reynolds, the female contestant in round three of this episode, went on to marry Kermit Roosevelt, the great-grandson of Theodore Roosevelt on May 6, 1967. See the announcement in the May 7, 1967 New York Times. TV has ALWAYS been fake.
And it was such sexist times. He always asked the men what they did (occupation) and the women if they were married or hand children. Funny because Allen was married to Betty White, a very ambitious career women.
Chris N , Back then, it wasn't sexist of Alan to ask what a woman's husband did for a living. In those days, it was simply a fact that most women were homemakers unless they were unmarried. Alan already knew the information about each new contestant, so he knew enough about a woman to ask the appropriate question: "Are you a working girl?" or "Do you have a family?" or "What is your husband's occupation?". Whichever question he asked, was a polite way of letting the person talk a little bit about themselves, because the audience and home viewers were interested.
The first male contestant is amazing in his manner. I have a feeling he might have been gay. Just a guess, no judgement here, of course. I'm just trying to imagine how many minority people were part of these shows those days.
Allen.."papoose, that's an Indian baby! " ? Although he is the best host this show ever had... comments like that, giving out clues during the game, and not knowing it, Also not knowing where the game is at certain points. Seems Allen isn't to swift.

While working on that movie Viv did an interview with Lucy. Lucy did a number of them with different people and sombody turned it into a podcast.
I love how the celebrities seemed a little nervous and eager to do a good job!!
Vivian Vance would have been 56 here and I think that she looks wonderful...
Yes, she does
I had the same hairdo that year. I was ten years old. A ten year old lady!

definitely. I thought it was a 2 cluer (Elk + Yellowstone) but yours is definitely a 1 clue word.
That $50 consolation prize was equivalent to $450 in 2022. Not a bad payday just for appearing.

Pretty much all of them too
I was in kindergarten then! I remember when The Great Race was in the theaters, new.
Plez post proof Post, pronto
As a boy, I fondly recall going to see "The Great Race" at a downtown theater when it first came out.
I always loved Vivian, she was always so formal and elegant but she never seemed to act like a big star, she was down to earth and simply funny
Wonderful,professional actress…without her skills…(and a few others..)the whole “Lucy” thing never would’ve worked…

They announced her as Lucille Ball sidekick. I would be very upset about that
Agree...they should have announced her as having Lucille Ball as HER sidekick. No?
Well why? She was starring on The Lucy Show with Lucy at the time of this password episode
I don't think she minded. After all, that's what she was best known for.
