The Great Race is a very funny movie. Jack Lemmon as Professor Fate was great. Vivian Vance played a suffragette and the wife of a newspaper editor and was very good.

Whether the truth or not, Jim Backus told this story. He either got a mash note of phone call from Marilyn Monroe, she just had to meet him in person. He told his wife Henny about it, and she said, "If it were any other woman, I'd be jealous... but Marilyn Monroe! You've got to do this!" So Jim met her privately, and what Marilyn wanted was Jim to talk like Mr. Magoo.

Chris N , Back then, it wasn't sexist of Alan to ask what a woman's husband did for a living. In those days, it was simply a fact that most women were homemakers unless they were unmarried. Alan already knew the information about each new contestant, so he knew enough about a woman to ask the appropriate question: "Are you a working girl?" or "Do you have a family?" or "What is your husband's occupation?". Whichever question he asked, was a polite way of letting the person talk a little bit about themselves, because the audience and home viewers were interested.
