When my father and mother married, my mother joined my father to live in Johannesburg after living in East London most of her life. This meant that as children, our family found traveling from Vanderbijlpark (Where my dad had found work) to East London, to be our once-a-year holiday treat. We would set out around mid-afternoon in an old Austin ten to drive past Vredefort about an hour before sunset. My dad always pointed out the approximate vicinity of where this historical dome was located. This landmark was the second land landmark we looked forward to seeing; the first being the Barrage. After the dome, there were many more landmarks to keep all of us amused as we journeyed through the Free State and later in the day through the North Eastern Cape towards East London.
This post brought back a flood of memories that made that journey unforgettable. Thank you for putting it out there...Dave Calder
