    My son had 2 febrile seizures about a year apart. They definitely say these are not dangerous seizures and it made me feel crazy for staying up all night long watching him every time he had a fever. It drove me into therapy. I didn’t have another baby for 6 years out of fear. And everyone made me feel like I was a paranoid “first time mom” but when they have the first one with no symptoms prior and you think you are watching the passing of your child it changes something in you. My son didn’t breathe when he had his and I always thought if he had one in his sleep and I didn’t wake up I could lose him. I’m so sorry for the parents. These seizures normally happen before you even know they are sick. We need more awareness about fevers and febrile seizures, I meet so many people who never heard of it

    There's a cousin in my family who experienced febrile seizures as an infant around the age of 8-9 monthes. However, they didn't take her life in the literal sense. She kept having them, and they got worse. They got so bad that her seizures started robbing her of oxygen regularly. Long story short, she lost most of her brain function, regressed severely, and now is a 14 year old with the functionality of a 3 month old baby. These seizures are no joke, and the pediatric medical community should be putting more importance on monitoring them.

    I worked as an EMT for only 2 years and I had 3 of these calls. Its really hard to describe how horrible those 3 calls were. The first of those 3 calls unfortunately ended up not being the last time we went to that house as the mother of the child attempted suicide several times after the death of the infant before she was able to take her own life. All of these families were normal suburban middle class white picket fence households. This affects all people of all backgrounds. I didn't hear anything in this report that prevents the seizure, just that maybe catching it can help. And do what? Will the EMT's give the baby oxygen? Will the ER shoo the parents away? Why are the kids having them in the first place? Should they be on anti seizure meds til they get older? This report sounds like the main progress is to say yes a baby can die from them, but then what? Or what of the child permanently damaged by oxygen deprivation as one in this comment section shares happened to her relative.What causes a developing baby such internal dysregulation?

      @coleengoodell7523 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hlw1306 This type of seizure is fairly common in children and as stated, is normally nothing to worry about. They can be triggered by fever or other illnesses. There are medications that can be given on an emergency basis via nasal spray or liquid. Seeing the frequency by monitoring is important as some may not be noticed and once the brain starts seizuring, they can increase in frequency and intensity, spreading to other areas of the brain that control breathing or go from a partial to a convulsive seizure, which depending on the duration, can result in death.
      Yes, if these seizures are frequent, an anti-convulsive medication is indicated. Children will normally grow out of this type of seizure and not be considered as having lifelong epilepsy, some don't. Learning the triggers are also important in management of them.
      People with epilepsy are living very productive lives with proper medical interventions.

    My daughter had a febrile seizure when she was a year old. The doctors told me that this was hereditary and asked if any of us had them as a child. My mom told me I had a couple growing up. New parents of babies ask your parents if anything like this has happened to you and just be aware of your little ones. Being sick with a fever isn’t unusual for little ones but note NEVER miss a dose of medicine. And I choose Motrin vs Tylenol, works better for high temp fevers.

    • @Br0nto5aurus
      @Br0nto5aurus 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      Febrile seizures are caused by spikes in fevers, not the high temp itself. A child predisposed to febrile seizures may have a temp of 102.4 that slowly rose overnight and be just fine, but will seize if it jumps from 99.1-101.6 in 30-60 minutes. Also, many doctors are now recommending not medicating a fever if the child isn't in pain, as fevers up to 102.2 are part of the immune response, not harmful to the child. So parents should talk to their pediatrician about over the counter fever reducers, when it's most beneficial to use them, and whether a fever reducer wearing off could result in a fever spike that causes a febrile seizure in children with a genetic history of them.

    • @saltandsriracha
      @saltandsriracha 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. Watch fevers like a hawk but don't medicate unless it goes too high. I am on high alert when my kids have fevers and give them all my attention. But fevers ARE good for the illness. That's how the human body gets rid of illness. If you prevent that from happening, the fever can spike even higher because that's what it needs to do to get rid of the illness.

    As a Pediatric resident doc very early in my career, this video was so heartbreaking to watch but also very inspiring to change how I will approach simple febrile seizures. In med school, I was taught that simple febrile seizures are truly harmless, and it was completely unnecessary to do anything about them beyond tight fever control. WE WERE EXPLICITLY TAUGHT TO DISCOURAGE PARENTS FROM ALL OF THESE EXTRA MONITORS! As “extensive research” showed they have not lead to any benefit in death prevention, but lead to increased parental anxiety and increased clinic visits as parents over analyze the small normal changes in oxygen levels. Idk if these monitors are in fact the answer or if I would recommend them if they truly have not led to changes in death rates, but I will for sure keep up with ongoing research on this topic, and stop viewing febrile seizures as being so benign…. And hate to admit I have definitely been taught to tell parents “if a kid had to get some type of seizure, this is the type you would want as it is so benign.” Feel horrible if that is not the case… Thank God for ongoing learning!!! The thing is, the absolutely vast majority of febrile seizures is benign. These are the horrible but thankfully few cases where it's not. I have a family member whose anxiety has gone through the roof due to using one of these foot monitors with multiple false alarms each night. Could a monitor have helped this specific family? Maybe. But scaring already anxious parents that their child may die, and recommending products that increase that anxiety by giving off many false alarms is wise in my opinion.

    • @Comet512
      @Comet512 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      My experience with the owlet monitor was excellent. There were a couple of times the alarm went off when the sock monitor needed to be adjusted. Not a big deal. Some parents say it’s too hard but I would rather get up once in awhile for a false alarm than miss my child needing medical assistance and being unaware.
      The monitor helped in knowing my kid’s resting heart rate. It was helpful information in understanding if my child was sick with something or not and to look at previous nights to see when it started. It was once useful to my child’s pediatrician!
      It seems like a reasonable, affordable option for parents who have a child with a condition that is likely harmless but a tiny percentage deadly.

They were taken off the market a few years ago for being touted as “a medical device”, but the company did their due diligence and testing and passed the tests, so they are back on the market now. Breathing monitors were available to these parents because I used one (Angelcare flat pad monitor) on my own son 16 years ago. It went off twice during the prime SIDS months (2-4 months) and I was so thankful to have it because I don't believe my son would be here without it. It blows my mind how any parent in this day and age can go without using a breathing monitor when there are so many options out there yet there are still so many parents who don't. My heart goes out to these parents though, as they lost their little one at the age of 17 months and I bet very few parents are using breathing monitors past the age of one. I know I didn't use mine because SIDS has always been something that happened mostly before the age of six months. I think based on this study, pediatricians need to be educating all parents on the risks and encouraging the use of breathing monitors until at least two years of age. A breathing monitor is a simple safeguard against such a tragic loss.

    • @DianeRuth
      @DianeRuth 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Unfortunately even if they were available pretty much no medical professional will warn you that you should use one. We were told "The bed is the safest place to have a seizure" and that febrile seizures are common and go away on their own. If you google febrile seizures, nothing about SUDC comes up, nothing about risk of death. The problem isn't a lack of devices, it's messaging.

    • @mlaidukaitis
      @mlaidukaitis 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I feel like most pediatricians these days actually advise against using breathing monitors because they say it can make you too lax and reliant on them. They say the best thing is to sleep with the baby in the same room, very close to your bed for easy monitoring, but not actually in your bed with you.
      I'm personally for breathing devices together with good monitoring practices, but this is the info I've heard so many times now in my own research on the subject.

So how could it possibly blow your mind that some parents don't know about it?

    I knew a kid that had febrile seizures, she’s a 40+ yr old adult now. I was a kid the first time I saw it and it’s really horrifying to witness. She continued to have them up until adolescence, which isn’t usual. Seeing an 8yr old drop and eyes roll into the back of her head is really scary to see. But she was one of the younger of 12 kids in her family and so whenever she was sick someone slept with her in order to catch & deal with the overnight seizures so they weren’t missed. In the winter the window stayed open in the room she slept in and summer the AC cranked up in the room she slept in. Both were to help keep her from overheating with a fever, which would inevitably send her into a febrile seizure. She also had to be on a strict Tylenol/Motrin schedule to ensure they were catching the fever before it got too high. And they had to always have a big pot of Ice water on hand and rags to put on her pressure points were the ultimate treatment when the meds failed to control her fever spikes, as soon as they detected her body heat rise or the seizure started she had to be doused with ice water to get that fever down as quickly as possible, in whatever way necessary. An old doctor, 40yrs ago, was the one who recommended all of this and I believe it absolutely did save her life.

      This is funny because I too had fever seizures (what we called them) until I was almost 5 and this is the same thing my mom did for me. She would make me stand in a cold shower instead of ice water , she said an old nurse at the hospital told her all of the same things and to keep me cold until the tylenol/motrin kicked in. I was like 3 months the first time it happened and I'm in my 40's now.

    Its time to investigate the vaccine schedule. Too many vaccinations in too short of a time period.

    I thought sudden death syndrome was when no prior medical conditions were reported before death. Seizures are certainly something noticeable.

    My 19 month and 16 day old son (twin) also passed away in his sleep and categorized as SUDC. He never suffered from Febrile seizures (that we know) but his twin sister had her 3rd febrile seizure 3 days before he passed away. Thank you for bringing awareness to SUDC. My hope is that one day no families will suffer this unbearable loss.

    I am so glad they are beginning to find answers for these poor families... I am often scared to sleep to make sure my child is breathing. My husband calls me crazy, my parents and in-laws say I am overprotective... I'm not wrong for waking up every so often to check on my baby.
    This is actually amazing because all those families and current parents kept being told that they were doing something wrong for having things in the crib or just having no reason can now begin to find solace in the fact that they weren't to blame.
    I think I will definitely get one of those monitors for my next baby.
    Thank you to all those families and scientists who participated in the study.

    My daughter had febrile seizures starting at 18 months. They wanted her on anti-seizure meds and I told the doctor, no way. Her seizures were caused by high temps which were caused by ear infections. Took her to an ear nose and throat specialist who inserted ear tubes and no more seizures. She had then done at 20 months, 3 yrs and 5.

      Main cause for these seizures is infection, specifically ear infections.

      My son is 4 years old and he has had 9 febrile seizures so far since he was 1,5 years old. Yes most of them happened because he had an ear infection. He never sleeps alone at night because I'm so terrified that he will have one during his sleep

      @@bluberrimuffins Why on earth have they not inserted ear tubes? As a nurse dealing with physicians, if one doesn’t help your child, move on to another one, till your child’s health has been improved. Not all doctors are alike, some have no business being a physician at all.

    So, what causes febrile seizures in infants?

    • @erinaa9486
      @erinaa9486 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Genetic tendency to get seizures when fever spikes

    • @Kriistall7

      When temps spike quickly our brains can't cope easily. Any seizure is bad for someone, febrile or not they all do an amount of damage to the brain

    The more that society rejects the practice of having their baby sleep in a separate room in a crib alone the more we will see this. Children that young by nature are supposed to be next to their mom when they sleep

      Seizures are the potential cause. Yes the majority of children outgrow these seizures but some kids can die from them and that is what they are trying to find out. That is why they want these videos so they can study them and see if they can find out the cause
