Wall mounted toilets in Germany are only slightly more expensive than floor mounted toilets (which have basically been phased out for new construction). You can get a mounting frame with concealed tank including toilet seat from Geberit (which is the most common brand) for altogether less than US$500 Obviously you can spend much more for their fancier versions, but its not necessary. Geberit systems usually last decades with little maintenance.

@Max Barko because seems like you don't have experience of maintaining wall hung toilets. I have a total of 6 washrooms in my home with 4 being wall hung . Even then i will go for wall hung because they look cool but on the other hand you have to spend more time and money in maintaining it.
Thank you, my question is :I saw a panel wall will come with the toilet ,so is that mean that you can not tile over the panel ? Please need more information about how to access the tank etc if you tile the wall !
As a master plumber I don't recommend any type of those new wall mount toilets with carriers and tanks in a residential dwelling. If the bowl or parts ever cracks or breaks you will have a hell of a time finding replacement parts. Or if company goes out of buisness will need to reroute plumbing. Not worth it to me. Just keep it simple I say.
Hi, our old (1950/1960's) house has the wall hung toilets with the tank above it; which were put in at a time when workmanship and quality mattered. Do you know of a trustworthy brand, due to the city sending out notices for everyone to get water saving toilets? I really hate to even replace them. Plus I have a really overweight family member and I am really not wanting to replace the toilets. Thanks.
@Ms Buttercup I would keep them If they have to be removed look at installing a commercial tankless toilet, Be warned that the commercial toilets need bigger diameter water supply lines however. Vacuum toilets from a company like AcornVac are also an option
As a general plumber I hate these wall hung toilets. I’ve probably removed as many of these as I’ve fitted. Cannot get replacement parts (can’t use alternatives in many cases), can’t access flush pipe that goes into pan or see if all is ok and not leaking. Changing parts can be very fiddly and difficult as access is so tight through the button panel. Then add these mechanisms use flimsy plastic rods which control the flush - they can quite easily come off or break. I refuse to fit wall hung toilets, the only time I do is through sites where it is out of my control to talk customers out of it. Honestly just get yourself a regular toilet. Maintenance is straight forward. Parts are readily available. They last a long time without requiring a plumber to come fix something. There are many dozens of styles, shapes, colours and sizes to choose from. Wall hung toilets are balanced on two not so thick metal rods. Which are secured by a couple of grub screws to tighten them to the rods. Then you have a chance of the ceramic splitting. Not worth the risk to me not in the long term.
Buy Geberit. It’s a Swiss company that builds high quality frames for wall hung toilets and guarantees spare parts for 50 years. They exist since 1874.
I love your videos. Always great, no-nonsense information. Currently, I have a powder room and a full bath with back to back toilets - one on each side of the wall. Is it possible for them to share one wall tank or would I have to move one of the toilets?
You should be able to put a Toto or some other brand of Washlet on a wall hung toilet bowl. The only time I had a problem was when there was an indentation on the tank. You will be good to go!
I'm seriously considering one because my 2nd bathroom is only 45" wide and a wall-mounted toilet would give me more clearance between the front of the bowl and the opposite wall. Even though the wall-mounted toilet is more expensive than a floor-mounted one, it would be cheaper than moving the wall. What brand do you recommend?
@aleciacope3503, I recommend Toto and Geberit. Another thing you need to know is that the carrier comes with the tank. You either buy one for a 6” wall or a 4” wall. The six inch carrier is easier to service.
Really interesting. In the UK we import them from Europe and we find them for £180 in the shop, to include the frame and cistern and all the workings, but without the toilet pan (ceramic part you sit on). So with a cheap pan you can get the whole lot for about £350 which based on what you are saying is a lot cheaper than in the US.
You didn’t get to the maintenance part on the wall mounted- do you have to rip the drywall out to repair it? I see easier access to the guts on a floor toilet to be a big cost and hassle advantage. An advantage of wall mounts might be for saving space if you have a small bathroom
@portagee390, when there is a wall mounted toilet and you don’t see the tank, the flush plate you see on the wall is what you remove to repair the toilet.
Thanks for advice Jim! One question - Do I need to dig holes in the ground and install 10 or 12mm rebars in ground and above where the 6 inch brick wall for the wall-hung toilet is to be constructed to create a counter balance for the weight of the wall-hung toilet + a man weight?
My hospital remodeled several rooms into large VIP suites, had wall mount toilets. No VIP used our hospital though so they were used for isolation rooms and general overflow to be more productive within the first 3 months. Within that time a large patient managed to break the ceramic off the wall(just the part to sit on) . byebye to wall mounted toilets!
I installed a wall mounted toilet in my house by myself. I got a high quality Geberit frame for about $350 and a toilet for $150. Seems more expensive in the US?
You would need to buy a Toto Washlet or a bidet seat from another manufacturer. As far as I know no toilet is sold with a bidet seat. I much prefer a bidet seat over a bidet.
Our house has concrete floors, can I change to a wall mounted unit? What brand do you recommend for reliability. Need something that works when the power goes out.
@@cottagekeeper if you are on a water pump, your toilet is not going to work if the power goes off. Otherwise, if on municipal water, your toilet will always work. ailin perez, you need to reroute the toilet drain pipe. Hopefully you have a basement or crawl space. If it’s a concrete floor, you need to remove the concrete to reroute the drain. If you are doing a major remodel job in the bathroom it would be easier to change the piping. 99% of the time new construction or major remodel is when you can change the hanger of the toilet to a wall mount. I don’t have a video.
Doesn't having the tank inside the wall mean that if something breaks you have to tear open the wall? I have had tanks leak. I have had flappers stick or leak. I have ballcocks that end up needing adjustments. Yeah sure they work great for the first 10 years but buy a 10 year old home with them I think would just be asking for trouble.
Yep, I agree that those tank toilets used in 99.9% of residential private homes (mine included) can be a problem as you stated. I also realize that from experience. That's why I prefer a commercial type tankless toilet (wall mounted) of course, but with a flushometer valve on top back of toilet instead of a usual tank. Those are powerful & get the job done with a single flush. Of course they are heavy duty & require larger pipes of at least 1" diameter" for the plumbing system to handle the high water pressure source & they are noiser, but I don't mind.
I have a main floor bathroom just above the utility room in the basement where the water supply and shutoff valves for the house are located. If I install a wall mounted toilet to the 2x4 wall on the main floor can the flush valve be located beneath it in the utility room? No need for hearing the noise or ripping out the wall for maintenance?
If you are talking about a residential wall mounted toilet, the tank is in the wall attached to the mounting bracket to hang the toilet. The flush lever is attached to the tank and when you finish the drywall, you install a flush plate on the wall. You repair the toilet by removing the flush plate.
Hey...I'm literally having this conundrum with bathroom renovation here in Melbourne Australia. My toilet is big enough to accommodate either style and i prefer the aesthetic of the wall hung. But am comcerned about having to rip out tiles if anything goes wrong 😢.. And also how do you out in cistern cleaning tablets i love my blue toilet soap blocks😊
If the wall carrier is installed correctly and you can stand and jump on it and it doesn’t move, you won’t have to worry about the tile. The tank parts will have to be replaced someday as with any toilet. Those blue tablets will wear out the gaskets in the toilet tank. I don’t recommend them.
One recommendation: don’t save money on the frame for a wall hung toilet. Buy a high quality one from Swiss company Geberit for example. They guarantee spareparts for decades as well
I honestly have no idea. Pick out a wall mounted toilet and contact the manufacturer and ask that question. One thing I do know is the toilet needs to be properly installed.
I'm thinking of building an outdoor bathroom and was thinking of putting the toilet on the wall because I need to gain some pitch for the sewer because my house is a bungalow style house that is raised from the ground like 3 ft..Do you think this is a good idea?
I would recommend putting the bathroom on an ejector pump. This would make life much easier for all your bathroom fixtures and might be cheaper. Ejector systems are easy to install and easy to maintain. Liberty Sewer Ejector System is my favorite.
I’m a little afraid he’ll send me an all cap response telling me how ignorant I am but here goes. Are there any specific brands of wall mounted toilets he’d recommend or any to stay away from?
The floor mounted toilets are a bit of a gimmick, I would never choose it if it was not for the better half wanted it. I have done up 4 bathroms in in our house and all toilets was changed to wall mounted. A bit of a pain to install as the frame has to be mounted VERY solid to avoid any kind of movement and the wall behind had to be redesigned somewhat. But they look good and it's easier to clean. Well at least we haven't gone full japanese with electronics and that useless stuff..
ROSSLYN ALEXANDER, they have comfort height toilets which are much cheaper than wall hung toilets. You have a major construction job with a wall hung toilet.
We've had a wall mounted toilet for 50 years and are looking to replace it; I found a wall mounted toilet on Amazon for less than $200 -- how can that be?!
The only way to replace your wall mounted toilet is with the same brand name toilet that has the same four bolt pattern. Unless you have a harvest gold or avocado colored toilet now, the only replacement is going to be white. If you have a white toilet now, you should be able to replace all the toilet tank parts and use the old toilet. To be honest, you’re probably going to remodel the entire bathroom, walls and all.
I think this is the first time we've heard Jordan's name... so Hi Jordan. Jim, could you do a video on waterless urinals? I am starting to see them at a few service stations. I would be tempted to put it in my house If I knew it wouldn't stink. Have you ever seen one installed in a home?
@ACoustaDC, waterless urinals are great. They work by a cartridge that’s installed in the drain. There is a chemical in the cartridge that keeps the smell away. The only problem is that people will take a bucket of water and dump it into the urinal and that destroys the cartridge. Then the cartridge has to be replaced. I have never installed one in a home. Matter of fact, I have installed only one urinal in a home but I have repaired several flush valves on urinals in homes. Waterless urinals have no water connection. Always good to hear from you. Happy New Year.
I'm not a plumber, I'm in fire sprinkler and alarm systems, but I do work with plumbers and electricians. We had these at my employment for a while, but they got removed as the acidic nature of urine was causing the old cast iron drain piping and steel fittings on the sewer lines to corrode at an alarming rate. Also with the cartridge - its a vegetable oil-based substance so urine will sink down through it and into the drain pipe through a 'p'-type trap. The oil eventually creeps out and down the drain, too (why you have to replace the cartridges regularly). And yeah, they can smell up a bathroom. The ones in our office building got replaced back to water-saving flush urinals, both building maintenance and tenants are glad it happened.
@@steveeric8818 who told you that? You have to install a wall- mounted carrier in the wall and it must be anchored properly to hold all the weight of a wall-mounted toilet. Four lag bolts screwed into drywall or wood will not hold a toilet.
In Europe the problem with wall hung toilets exist in tank and toilet mounts. While Germany may have this in place is not a standard as digging into a wall of either stone or brick isn’t economical to hide tubes nor is it strong enough to support the porcelain. The wall hung toilets is nothing more than a recent trend and not what is taking place across Europe as apartments and otherwise were built many years ago. Don’t let your father agree to Europe standards, be argumentative that’s better
It’s not the price of the toilet. It’s tearing up the walls and rerouting the drain and plumbing that’s costly. We’re doing it for two bathrooms and it’s gonna cost about 3500 each.

@@crosslink1493 Thanks for that input.
It’s four lag bolts to install. How is that so much harder. Or is that plumbers talk to charge more money
They make wall hung toilets that are tank and bowl that can be surface mounted.
I use indian toilet, super easy to use no maintance, helps in digestion.
I don’t know what you’re referring to, but 👍if it works for you.
@㲷 oh ha ha! Again, if it works for you…
How to repair a wall mount to toilet
I don’t have anywhere to put my plate!
Are you referring to the flush button on a wall mounted toilet?
Hey Jim - Thumbs up. Greetings from Iowa. Thanks for the info. Have a safe holiday. Get your flu shot. Don't believe me, ask your dentist.
Fun stuff…Ford to a Ferrari
It’s not the price of the toilet. It’s tearing up the walls and rerouting the drain and plumbing that’s costly. We’re doing it for two bathrooms and it’s gonna cost about 3500 each.
There is a lot of work that goes into putting in a wall hung toilet, especially in a remodel.
Good god the price!!!!!
Wall toilet is much nicer and easier to clean around. I hate toilets on the ground 😡😡😡😡😡
Do NOT put a wall mount toilet in USA. People are too Obese commonly 300Lbs. This is too much stress on wall.
Luckily we dont have anyone over 200 lbs here, if guest are, i will tell them to use the peasant toilet in the basement. We put simpson strong-tie sph stud plate on top and hdq holdown plates on bottom just in case.
Dude sounds like Joe Biden.
@@D_Syno thank you! 😊
i just bought a new build and i want wall mounted toilets, but my family is skeptical about them working well, do they have any reason to be? luckily there's no real extra installation cost in my case because the house is being built from scratch. so it's just something that needs to be installed. thanks!
Get your wall mounted toilets. I know you will enjoy them.
how did you get a smile out of him? lol
