How Lazy are Greyhounds? Two Dogs, Every Hour, for 12 Hours!

  • A little background….Mac and Tosh wake up at 6am and have breakfast and a bathroom break. Then they, well, sleep as you see! I walk them every other day, so they did not get a walk on the day of this filming. They had dinner around 4:30pm this day. They go to bed at 10pm.
    I literally setup reminders on my phone every hour for 12 hours on this day, and just started filming a minute of the greyhounds lives. I thought it was pretty fun to see them in this way; I hope you enjoy it too!
    I was gone for two hours this day, so you see the dogs from my “dog cams” which are Wyze Cams that I have all over the house to keep an eye on the pups when I am away. (Affiliate link: amzn.to/3E7N42D)
    I debated about adding narration, but decided it was more fun just to watch. If you would like more of this or a different take in the future, please let me know!
    Have a greyt day!

    If you are looking for an energy conservation expert, you need a Greyhound! We have a gentleman ex-racer who is 5 now, he enjoys his walks in the woods (about 30 to 45 minutes) and his weekly half hour in the paddock but relaxes for the rest of the day. He is the calmest, quietest, friendlyest dog you could wish for.

    My grey is the same. We take a couple of walks a day, but he mostly loves slouching on the couch on his back or sleeping on pillows and cushions under cozy blankets. He perks up when he wants you to play with him for a while with his toys or when he wants to have something to eat in between his lunch and dinner servings.
    They are so quiet and nice. Gotta love greys!!❤

      @@annettoyer Did you build up his endurance before walking him for such a long distance? The author of this video is absolutely right in that they are sprinters. Endurance must be slowly built up. You may say, your grey loves it. Greys will often want to be with and please their owner. If he’s a younger Ie not senior greyhound, he could do the mileage you refer to but the damage will catch up; it could also shorten his life span in the long run! While you say he loves it, human chicken and adults for that matter, often love things that are not entirely good or safe for us. When we push ourselves beyond capacity, injury occurs, and injury and damage may not be immediately visible but over time. Please ensure slow build up of endurance training and rest days.

    I had a Husky/Samoyed/Border collie mix. You'd think this type of mutt would have been so crazy and active but he was a sprinter and he was REALLY fast. I always wondered if he might have had a bit of greyhound in him. So long as I took him to the park about every other day to sprint around for 20 to 30 mins, he was totally lazy the rest of the time

    I breed Italian greyhounds and I always tell people "these are the laziest dogs on earth!" And I have had clients call me after buying a puppy and ask "is it normal for them to sleep so much? " or "They're very relaxed all day, is this normal? "
    My answer is YES!
    They are very lazy and very relaxed or "laid back".... ideal companions for watching TV. 😆🤷‍♀️

    • @chloetan229
      @chloetan229 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn’t call them lazy and would choose a nicer, more positive word. Laid back, relaxed and chilled are better descriptors. Italian greyhounds are somewhat different to large greyhounds, although they do share traits. All puppies sleep a lot. Many dog breeds sleep a lot too, if there’s nothing else for them to do! Having said that, racing greyhound puppies are equally active compared to any other breed of puppies. As they are usually bred to race and adopted post racing or at around age 18 months to 2 years if they are not inclined to race, pet owners do not see them as pups. If you breed greyhounds, you will notice the pups are happy to play and they often spend their time racing one another in their runs, and if let out into a bigger field, they will race up and down in a row; no incentive required ( Ie no food treats or squeakie toys ). If hey are young, Ie under 3-4 months, it’s really cute to watch them. They race in a line and if the field is uneven, or just because they are not fully developed, some pups will take a tumble and somersault ( SO CUTE) and then get up and continue running with their siblings. They can be very cheeky too Ie pinching their owners beanie hat, or gloves or scarf and then run away at top speed and sometimes several are holding on to the beanie!
      Once greyhounds are older, post racing, they may sleep a lot if there’s nothing to do but they would be game to play with their owner Ie tug of war, fetch, hide n seek, puzzle toys etc and game to go out for a car ride, shopping , Wilkie’s etc etc. Senior greys over 10, will need more rest but are equally game to engage with owner and go for an outing. If the grey is sick Ie has cancer, depending on their bond with you, they may still want to go walkies and be with and near you. That’s when you may have to step in to limit activity. The great thing about the greyhound breed, including Italians, is that they are very calm, gentle and chilled dogs so will just sleep if you are away and are very unlikely to chew and damage furniture etc while you are away.

    Glad that you understand greyhounds are sprinters. It’s awful to see, especially in Au groups, pet owners who think they are experts. One lady walks her greyhound 3km a day and I can’t remember that’s twice a day without even having built up its endurance. Another did a post because her greyhound doesn’t want to go for a long early morning walk anymore and gets dragged out. Some encouraged her to push and pull her greyhound. A few sensible ones suggested she leave her greyhound alone and follow the dog’s lead. When advised that greyhounds are sprinters and if they want to do long walks, endurance must be built up, they argue that their grey loves it and keeps going all day, if they would allow it. Greys like to be w it’s their owners and will push themselves beyond capacity to be with / or please owner!
    Worst of all, a new grey owner posted a pic of her new grey who extremely thin like a dog with cancer or a starving one seen on world vision or rspca adverts. Pin bones sticking out and all ribs showing. This new and inexperienced owner, posts that grey is under weight due to either lack of exercise or food!!! Lack of food , yes obviously but certainly NOT lack of exercise! Exercise will make the poor grey lose more weight, unless it’s being fed an adequate diet, put on sufficient weight and then exercise will build muscle. This owner is bringing the skeleton greyhound for 2 x 30 min walks daily. It hurts me to see this beautiful breed being harmed. Too many people in AU adopt greys nowadays , not for the right reasons! Greys often come free from their owner/ trainers and on Gap open days. Otherwise Gap charges $75 for the adoption and rescues don’t charge too much. I hope your video can educate such people.

    Your hounds are lovely! I noticed their names together gives you a MacIntosh Apple! I’m sure you get that all the time. We have adopted retired racers for 20 years and recently lost our beloved Atticus Fetch to Osteo. We are hoping to find a good match this weekend as we are houndies fi4 the first time in nearly 21 years and it’s so sad. I’m active in the Greytalk and hound community and love telling people about retired racers and dispelling g misconceptions about them. Their activity is level is a big one! I’ld say until about age 4 they sleep 14-16 hours a day and then between 4-10 up to 18. Those seniors can nap a good 20! Luckily they wake up ever so often and come and cuddle with me. Greyhounds are such gentle, beautifully athletic but not extremely active and well adjusted & well socialized dogs I’ve ever met. People just don’t know what wonderful pets they make and how easy they are to live with. Thanks for sharing your pups!

      @twinsbmad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I've had my own greyhound for over 10 years and she's been perfectly fine sleeping the whole day away at home for the time it takes for a full work day! There might be an adjustment time when it's best to do smaller stretches of time at a time first of course, and can also depend on the doggo's personal character/energy level. You also have to be aware that this may change as they become seniors and can develop health issues. At 10-12 they might not be able to wait 9 hours to go potty, especially a spayed female greyhound. When you get to that point an alternative might be necessary: have someone come and take her outside at midday or lay some good pee pads at the place where the dog had accidents: they can learn pretty quickly, and mine became perfectly pee pad trained like this in a matter of a week or 2!

    I wonder if you could put a Fitbit on a greyhound, would they get an Excellent sleep score, or would it be the opposite? Since I can hardly get better than a 'fair' rating, it makes you wonder. Do you have trouble getting them to go for walks? I'm on the fence about adopting a grey. Been thinking about it for almost a year. It would be my first dog. Always been more of a cat person.

    • @smkauthor
      @smkauthor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha...I think a fitbit would register them as very lazy! I have no trouble taking them on walks. I can't even say the word "walk" unless I mean it cause they get so excited! They do the typical dog thing on walks: smell everything and pee on everything. Mac was my first dog ever. Any dog is a lot of work, and some money (food, vet, meds, sitter when out of town, etc.). As long as you are ready for that, I sure recommend a grey :) And I was a cat person before I got Mac. Greyhounds are actually pretty cat like, except they show you way more love than I ever got from my cats!
