I bought this 1999’ Acura RL for $1 and fully reconditioned it. The story of my first project car.

This is the story of my 1999 Acura RL 3.5 with the gold package and CD changer option. This is the story of how I purchased this old car from my father in law for $1 and what I did to recondition the car to the best of my abilities. I go through tens list of repairs, and exactly what I did to turn this old luxury sedan from Acura into a true gem and survivor. The car was 22 years old and only had 92k miles on it when I bought the car. She’s now at 111k and will be going in soon for the major service that includes , spark plugs, oil change, diff service, brake flush, timing belt, water pulp, and pulleys.

Update: The 100,000 mile service was done. Its involved doing EVERYTHING! Timing belt, water pump, injectors, belts, pulleys, new battery, and fuel injection service. It was $3200. I see why many of these cars don’t make it past 200k because many owners will not think they are worth the maintenance at that point and will either junk the car or drive it into the ground

I have a 1997 Acura 3.5 RL that my grandma bought brand new in 97 and I love it to death it’s comfortable and quiet runs good always starts up when I need it to the RL’s are really good cars that will last a long time if you take care of them I would recommend to anyone RL’s will do you good I am proud of mine 🎉

Regarding the auto electric steering wheel adjusters - both the tile and telescopic features fail over time. The problem is that the gears inside are made of plastic. Acura's recommended fix is a new steering column at a cost of around $1,200. Tip for others, adjust your steering wheel to your preferred height and proximity to driver and turn the automatic adjustment feature off.

There was a lot of wind noise but I think I heard you say something about the RL looking a lot like a Mercedes of the era. It's interesting you say that because the designers of the RL have said they were inspired by the the Lexus LS of the era, which, itself was modeled after the flagship Mercedes S class sedan.

Commenting as I watch - an odd thing about the engine is that it is mounted longitudinally, but is also front wheel drive. Almost always, front wheel drive vehicles have a transverse (sideways) mounted engine. Nearly all longitudinally mounted engines are rear wheel drive.

I can imagine. Even this one needed about 5k all in to do the brakes, 100k mile service with timing belt and water pump, and to recondition the body, trim, and interior.

Have the side seat panels that control the seats become loose and is it still your daily driver?

Did you have problems with idle? My 97 idle bouncing from 1000 to 1500 rpm’s sometimes stays at 2000 for a while . I’ve replaced fast idle (checked plastic screw inside),iacv ,burped coolant ,cleaned throttle body , nothing helps and I don’t hear any air leaks .any ideas?
