  • You have to practice racing to be good at racing. And if your times aren’t where you want them, don’t be afraid to use the races as experiments to find a better way to go fast. These were the last two swim meets before the big one. Now it’s taper time!

I think part of your problem might be tied to what you said about your weight at the beginning of the video. You’ve been cutting weight pretty significantly in the midst of hard training… a calorie deficit on top of intense sessions is a surefire way to accumulate a TON of fatigue and not recover all that well. You’re already quite light by your standards, you may be better off actually gaining back a couple pounds and getting into a slight calorie surplus for a few weeks to facilitate better recovery and get some of the pop back in your stroke. All about balancing energy in vs energy out!!!

I agree. Definitely looks like overtraining...not the exercise part, but the fuelling. Also, as I've got older, I'm finding that resting too much before a meet is not helpful and I lose the 'zip'...

@@1wickens I've been lifting less so I'm resting less. I find heavy lifting and the extra mass require a lot more taper.

Hmmm just a thought but I think You gotta increase caloric intake asap. Mini bulk for next 2 weeks. Don’t worry about weight. More salt and electrolytes. More beta-alanine and caffeine before the race.

It's a pretty good thought, probably right, thanks!

Your an inspiration James; I love your videos, grind, mentality and work ethic! Every week I wait for your next video to come out!
I think your in amazing swimming shape and on track physically. I tell my athletes there are 3 main ways to get better at swimming...
Physically becoming a better athlete, performing/executing a better race, and improving your technique. I have seen many videos on how your always improving your athleticism and race execution but haven't seen too many on working to improve your swimming technique (holding more water with the arms, staying more streamline, keeping the hips higher, moving more water with your feet etc...). Maybe assume your as fit as you need to be but could improve the way you swim instead of how hard/fast you swim?

Thank you, appreciate that! Yeah, it's been a while since I posted a strictly technical video. Lately, I've been sprinkling it into videos, but maybe I can do a technical one soon. My technique has changed a lot over the years, including over just the last couple months with faster hands and shallower kick.
