Fulfilling that dream of being a professional wildlife / astro / landscape photographer and moving in a cotage by a lake in a Bortle 3 area - I would enjoy any video related to your living area! 😀 Simon, please start a second channel for cabins, off-topic etc. stuff like that! 😆
This is a super important topic imho because many beginners completely underestimate or outright ignore the value of printing. To me, printing is literally the other side of photography. Sure, posting things on social media is nice, but it's only in prints that photography truly comes to life.
For me, that's long been a problem with digital art. Making it physical. Prints are...Prints. Which are fine. But photographs look better chemically printed, IMO, and a real painting or drawing is always better to hang than a print of a digital painting or drawing.
I don't even care that this basically could be rated as a commercial video, because sometimes doing something not just requires a good thought process but also a product. Thank you for sharing both here!
I've been an output professional from the early days of Gilcee prints. Since semi-retirement I've been a dodler photographer, my layers sister in-law wanted some note cards of some flowers and birds. I arranged it for her and was pleasantly satisfied, (not something done easily) thanks for the inspiration!
Another take on hanging art is to get your own photo printer and experiment on the printing side. You can get an A3+ printer without breaking the bank, and I have found printing to be another enjoyable aspect of photography. They won't blow you away like these acrylics from Whitewall and will be smaller of course, but it makes you edit photos in a different way to suit the environment they will be sat in. I took inspiration from Pete Souza's book on being Obama's photographer, and he used to rotate pictures in the Whitehouse every so often. I have started doing the same in my house, and for the ones that get put in a drawer it becomes a nice and tactile way to show pictures to visitors instead of showing your wider portfolio on a screen. For the frames, you can mass buy cheap ones and try painting them. Also experiment with a glossy glass (or acrylic) or leaving that out and hanging a matte print.
I've been intrigued by taking pictures for 20 years. For the last year or so I'm intrigued by being am amateur PHOTOGRAPHER! I think there is a distinguishable difference. I cannot get enough of your videos and you've been very helpful to a guy like me who self proclaims I've got no idea what I'm doing. Thank you for your content.
The look on your face when you see your print for the first time is priceless. I do the same, despite the fact that we are the people that took the shot and are amazed by the result :)
Simonsafes metric measurements! Wow! I'm delighted. Thank you so much. I haven't printed any pictures on acrylic, but the thicker the acrylic, the more depth the picture gets. The difference between 3 and 6mm was terrific.
Your prints are stunning and they look beautiful next to your fire place. I also loved your wife's flower painting. Both of you are very talented. I love your photography video's, as I am still learning and Light room Classic tips help me tremendously.
Your photos look so good! I realize that if I am ever going to be a real artist, I must find the beauty in even mundane spaces, but- also, and this is the excitement of photography, go to the places that are so beautiful. I remember your video of making things happen no matter if the subject shows up, the trip is cancelled, or some other obstacle comes along. You just find something exceptional and shoot it and make another masterpiece. I love the colors in the living room, the incredible subject matter, and all your videos!
to highlight an implied point you made: paintings / non-realism in the same room is a great compliment to photography, unless it’s a gallery, mixing media is always the way, imo. Great work on that room!
Oh my gosh spectacular & inspirational... I now realize just how pedantic you are also (glad im not the only one) and your wifes painting WOW she's extremely talented what a great couple you are 🌷
Such a great video! The room looks very well balanced and professional, yet it still has that cozy feel you want in a living room. I love the lion photo; it's very dramatic! Keep up the great work!
Great work, Simon! Excellent advice for prepping, too. I am not so keen on the reflections with acrylic, but that's my personal taste, and the expense can be frightening for large sizes! Your walls look amazing :) Loving the channel and waiting for the next film already! All the best, Ian
@simon_dentremont I must say, Mrs D is a very accomplished artist, the painting, albeit only a brief look, is very good indeed. Living by a lake must be most therapeutic, plus many options for photography. They say good things happen to good people, and you are one of the best my friend.
On space an orientation I have put sets of prints in a space to get the same effect sometimes. So beside the fireplace three stacked smaller prints that still make a matching shape overall.
I gotta say, man --- I've really been enjoying your videos! You're clear, concise, and your voice is perfect for instructional and informative videos. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give White Wall a look. The recommendations in re sizing, aspect ratio and placement are mostly sensible. Proportionality is a key design element -and FWIW, I find the Milky Way photo above the stairway to be a bit too small for the space. Thanks for producing and posting ...
FANTASTIC choice for a video topic!! There are not enough of these being made by professional photographers (that is the essence here)!! I learned a lot. You even had me going around my house looking at my own artwork on the walls only to say "I should have gone portrait in shape", etc. Thank you....I learned a lot from this!!
Simon a very timely topic. I have a wall in my living room that I want to mount some prints to. I want to do a collection of prints of various sizes and subjects. Everything from nature, landscape, macro to aviation. Your advice is very helpful. Thanks.
A little synchronicity in life Simon, no bull, I just got back from my local print shop to look at the results of a landscape shot I captured last October. The fall colours will work well in my living room. We decided to print on canvas and mount in a floating frame. This is one of those moments in life when you get to really see your own work come to fruition. What a great feeling. I always look forward to and enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing. 🙏 In just a few days I will get to live with one of my favourite shots and I think one of my best, if I do say so myself. Cheers. Oh, this is the shot you gave me some feedback on last fall. My sincerest thanks to you.
G’Day Simon, new subscriber here from the Great Southern Land 🇦🇺. Your TH-cam channel came up on my feed just a couple of days ago, and they have been enlightening, encouraging, and informative at a level that I have been able to understand indeed. I live in the country, in the southern part of the state of Victoria, and have been an avid but very, very amateur photographer, and have been running a Panasonic DMC FZ7 since 2010. It has travelled with me to the UK, Canada, and China, and has served me well, and given me some wonderful photos, but I really love taking landscapes, and wildlife photos, and have been looking for something that is more up to date, with better quality, and abilities, but with a limited budget I have, I was encouraged by you saying not to be discouraged from buying secondhand equipment, and I am now looking for something that can fit my budget, and needs to be able to adorn my house with my own photos. I have many photos that friends say are amazing, and should have them on the walls, but I fear they don’t have the quality to enlarge them enough for this, hence why I would love to be able to do that. And after watching one of your videos on taking night sky photos last night, I stepped outside at about 11pm, and let my eyes wander over the Milky Way, and it was awe inspiring to think I was able to maybe get somewhere in the neighbourhood to your photo of the Milky Way. Thank you.
Simon! Your timing couldn't be better for this subject. I'm in the beginning phases of remodelling my 12'x20' shed into a finished space and while I have considered some of the aspects you covered, there are a handful I have to think about and I thank you for shining a light on them! I've had canvas and metal prints done, but hadn't ventured into acrylic, and I wasn't going to light the pictures, but you've got me thinking about that, especially considering this is essentially a new build. Thank you so much for this practical video!!! Tim
I went big and printed 109 preprinted cards with my photos...pretty but done with a mat finish which wasn't correct. Anyway I decided to order the photos and make the cards myself. 600 cards later I am happy to say they are going on a craft sale table tomorrow on the island we live on. Lots of the vacation home owners are back for the weekend and it should be a good time. Just $10 for a table for 3 hours...no risk really for that...I have friends here going to the sale to buy some so I am pretty sure it will be ok. Also I will have a lovely binder to write down any islanders who want blow ups...I listened to you about the shots I chose. One accidental shot was a pair seals in a kiss pose and a baby popped up in the water in front of them with a splash..frozen very well with the shutter speed! I printed a good amount of those, my aurora borealis shots, birds, starts, marina, boats, and all kinds of flowers plus the sunset so dramatic of our view everyone loves here! Will have to respond to let you know it goes along with who ever reads this. I did a ladys hair for her wedding here yesterday just to help her. Life is what you make it!
Well done! I guess, subliminally, I came to some of the conclusions as you when hanging my favorite artwork.....which includes your Sandpiper print. Also, I see your wife is quite talented, as well.
Full size poster prints of my lady right behind me in my office, just used the full resolution from the R5C. But in general I have always been a 300dpi guy since I was a kid. I have not seen a print from anyone else that is as detailed as mine, no pixilization even all the way up close.
That is great, thank you. I have been pondering if I can put a picture under a heat pump? Without mentioning the subject, your video answered this question.
That is awesome! Great prints! I have recently have been asked for a print of one of my Hummingbird photos. My first time. I won't be going the Whitewall route, but I think I might try one of my other photos I have taken for my own wall using Whitewall. They look awesome!
Great video. I am still early in my photo journey and very selective in what I print on my Canon pro-1000. Only a few 13x19 to date. Still search for my first 17x22 photo before jumping into the bigger prints you have presented today, but when I “get the frame” I will look into White Wall as only you have demonstrated these types of businesses. Thanks for a great video.
I can truthfully say, each video you make I come away with an ‘ah ha’ moment. The one that 🤦🏻♀️ got me this time, was to flip the photo so the subject is looking in the correct direction. Now how did that never occur to me? Thank you once again for teaching and enlightening me
Great information - nobody ever talks about this! Would be very helpful to get your insights on which media to use (based on content and mounting location) - I generally go with a metal print, but should consider acrylic, metallic paper, fine art paper, 'regular' paper print, canvas, wood, and so on. Love your channel.
I have a Jaguar (shot at Artis Amsterdam Zoo) print from Whitewall here in my living. Chose the UHD acrylic 4mm in portrait and it looks fabulous. Having some of my photos printed large just gives that extra piece of joy and are reminders of these great moments.
Printing photos I worked hard to create is so satisfying. When I saw my Tuscany countryside photo printed large and hung on the wall it was so rewarding. I started printing other photos large and putting them in a portfolio book just to be able to show them off of a computer screen. Friends are always looking to see if I added something new.
Take a gander at the classical orders of architecture. While overkill for many, understanding those ratios and relationships can really help one decide where to mount something in relation to the ceiling height and trim height in the space. Caveat, architects don't seem to pay attention to door and window heights being level anymore so this can be somewhat frustrating in modern homes.
Very interesting and useful video as usual: but printing is a step beyond what we normally do as 'casual' photographers and hope to move into more professional areas of our art !
Here are some tips from a professional art handler. Unless your "hanging space" is as big as MOMA, you are constrained by size and proportion. In most living rooms, 30x40 is the largest painting/print that will fit in a room and not overpower it. As to height: Rule of thumb is that the center of an image should be about 60 inches above the floor. This is about eye level for most of the population. I find that specialized lighting is for the people who hire someone to install it. I currently run 3 gallery spaces with out benefit of specialized lights. This is largely because my not for profit depends on long empty retail spaces on Urban commercial corridors. For home; I am blessed with 9 ft ceilings which is 6 inches higher than standard in the US. I am careful of reflective surfaces. That plays a major role in what wall things fit on.
Interesting video Simon. Thanks for that 🙂 I'll try to do some backlighting experiment with my milkyway and Deepsky pictures. Think that's could be awesome as the star's really "shine" in the photo.
Great video! I thought that your videos were a bit repetitive recently but this is a great one, I think it's also a good idea to offer more content "outside the box", not necessarily related directly to the camera in itself but to the general industry of photography.
I have a few "floating frames" acrylic borderless picture frames that you just drop a print into. Easy to swap out. The hard part is choosing what to print.
I'd say print a few you like anyway, even if you don't think they're good. Personally, I don't like to hang my pictures on the wall, but printing them makes a difference in how I take them. It's nice to have a few things printed.
Beautiful work, Simon, and excellent living room design! I notice that your wife's lovely painting is also matted and framed, where you chose a more floating style for your photographs. Both look great, so I was wondering what informed your choices. Thanks for another informative and inspiring video!
Got my R5Mii yesterday! Super excited. Batteries charging and setting it up :) Wish I had seen this a few days ago...I just ordered some prints for my work office. lol
Hi Simon, I really enjoyed this video as yesterday I photographed the Blue Moon and was happy with the results. And now watching your video and saying it's good to print your photos on the wall, and it's a reward we should make to ourselves, and I should hang my Moon photo as well. Nice to have those Accent Lights especially the Milky way one. Thanks for mentioning about the Colour Temperature of the Lights have to match the rest of the room Lights. It's great information, Many thanks Simon 😊.
Thanks for a great video. I want to put up some wall photos in a very small room (10 ft by 12 ft.) Rather than large prints I’m thinking of a collage of small prints. I’m slowly picking the best shots from my 19,000 and the theme will be will be wildlife. You have given me the instigation to get this started. I’ll take a photo of the wall into a CAD program where I can experiment with number, size and orientation of the prints. I could even put actual photos in. Also, a Whitewall coffee table book is definitely on the list. I was looking around at options and now know where to go.
this is so funny, but every time you start a video i feel like i'm literally at my family's house and you're one of my uncles greeting me. you look and sound so much like the dentremonts i know. :-P also, excellent prints and love the cottage setup.
Hello, thank you so much for your videos and weekly tips, it's always a pleasure to follow you. I would be really interested in a video where you could show how you prepare your photos for printing in a specialized lab. It would be very helpful to understand the process to achieve high-quality prints. Thank you in advance for your valuable advice!
Think I gotta get a feel for the difference in showing on screen vs print before I order anything fancy. Funny my wife just tried to wake up the old Epson R2880, clogged with old ink. And now there isn't even Epson ink for it. We'll give it one try and see on something cheap like 10x15cm because I'm sure my dark concert photos or my backlit soccer photos will behave quite differently
The timing of this video is incredibly coincidental. Literally last night I was trying to get a picture printed and I spent ages going through articles on what to do/not do
11:42 A word of caution to those hanging objects on or close to fireplaces. I’m sure Simon has his chimney well designed to extract heat away from that front but some may experience that what they hang on there doesn’t last as long as they might think. Constant, although perhaps perceived as low heat will cause damage over time. Personally, not even in Simon’s case would I place that TV screen there either. I see from the mounted prints that they come with a solid rear frame. This again is of utmost importance over time to avoid warping in constant heated environments. Don’t skimp on this, you’ll save money down the line not having to repeat on “wavy” acrylic …
I always wanted to print a REALLY big image, with REALLY high resolution. I've made images (with a 20mp camera) to over 200 mp, but printing really large is an expensive endeavor.... especially if one wanted it on aluminum or acrylic. By the way, I do a have a bunch of aluminum prints.... and a couple acrylics, but only up to a "small" 30 inch x 40 inch. I always wanted to do a 4 ft X 6 or 7 ft print, at 300 dpi (600 sized down to 300 would be even better ;) But we are talking Gigapixels, and a very expensive print ! There used to be a guy WAY back, by the name of Max Lyons, who made Gigapixel images and prints, with only a 6 mp camera :) He was the original stitching guru :) Your prints look fantastic BTW :)
I might try again using White Wall. When I sent photos off years ago, they would come back too dark, or the colors would be off. Even black and white photos would come back looking a bit purple, rather than true black and gray. I was using another professional printer, not the local pharmacy printer, so disappointing that I stopped having photos printed. For most of us, this is an extravagant expense, so when they get it wrong, ouch!
Simon, another great video and whole heartily agree on printing your great images. One thing I didn't catch in your video - do you prefer framing your print or frameless? What's your criteria for that?
You and your damm videos have enticed me a new camera and a couple of new lenses; My wife is pissed! Thank you so very much, I havent had this much fun in quite a while. (A black and white of my lovely wife will be the first to be produced...) Thanks again.
Check out Whitewall at trfy.eu/WHQgh and use code WWSIMONSAVES for 10% off!
It seems the operate for my country too... now I need to take a worthwhile picture!
Simon please make a video about proper storage technique on camera
If they are printing in Germany and shipping to Canada, are there customs/duties charges/hassles?
Fulfilling that dream of being a professional wildlife / astro / landscape photographer and moving in a cotage by a lake in a Bortle 3 area - I would enjoy any video related to your living area! 😀 Simon, please start a second channel for cabins, off-topic etc. stuff like that! 😆
You should probably focus on 1 and be a master at wildlife, astro or landscape.
Bortle 2, and I’m the luckiest guy on the planet.
@@simon_dentremont you mean the labouring-under-correct-knowledge-iest guy? Thats what you taught me :D
Being able to move in a dream house near a lake and decorate my home with my own photos is just a dream come true

I’m in love with your videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate you.
If I want to get geared and excited for the day, I either take coffee,.. or watch your new video.. or both. Thank you! Super love this!

That is awesome!
Wow! Beautiful painting by your wife. She has great talent!!!
P.S. love your videos immensely
Mor people teaching how to print but nobody or few talk about that topic, also the illumination tip is very helpful. Many many many thanks.

Would be very helpful to get your insights on which media to use (based on content and mounting location) - I generally go with a metal print, but should consider acrylic, metallic paper, fine art paper, 'regular' paper print, canvas, wood, and so on. Love your channel.
Great video Simon
Excellent video. Thank you!
I have a Jaguar (shot at Artis Amsterdam Zoo) print from Whitewall here in my living. Chose the UHD acrylic 4mm in portrait and it looks fabulous. Having some of my photos printed large just gives that extra piece of joy and are reminders of these great moments.
Glad to say that I think we are eye to eye 🙂
Perfect timing Simon, I just moved into college and have 3 prints I want to hang, I'm sure this video will give some pointers
Those prints turned out great!
Well done Simon !
Amazing prints , you have a beautiful home.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for that 🙂
I'll try to do some backlighting experiment with my milkyway and Deepsky pictures. Think that's could be awesome as the star's really "shine" in the photo.
Great video! I thought that your videos were a bit repetitive recently but this is a great one, I think it's also a good idea to offer more content "outside the box", not necessarily related directly to the camera in itself but to the general industry of photography.
Awesome, thank you!
What would also be great would be a display screen with the acrylic properties that could display multiple photographs in a slideshow arrangement.
Great! If only I could take good pictures…
Keep at it!
Thanks! I’ll try. Your advise is definitely helping me to improve my photography
I have a few "floating frames" acrylic borderless picture frames that you just drop a print into. Easy to swap out.
The hard part is choosing what to print.
👍🏻😂😂
I'd say print a few you like anyway, even if you don't think they're good. Personally, I don't like to hang my pictures on the wall, but printing them makes a difference in how I take them. It's nice to have a few things printed.
Beautiful work, Simon, and excellent living room design! I notice that your wife's lovely painting is also matted and framed, where you chose a more floating style for your photographs. Both look great, so I was wondering what informed your choices. Thanks for another informative and inspiring video!
Just looks to the eye
Got my R5Mii yesterday! Super excited. Batteries charging and setting it up :) Wish I had seen this a few days ago...I just ordered some prints for my work office. lol
Have fun!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@simon_dentremont Thanks Simon I did 😊
I noticed that you placed the top of the picture/artwork frame at the same height of the top of door frames when close to doors - agree💯
Of course, I meant inspiration.
I have some prints done on canvas. Maybe someday I will get one done on acrylic.. I will be in the Caribbean in February snapping some pix.
Looks great 👍
Great tip, Simon, as always! Now I want to print my photos! How about a photobook? I got mine in a photobook, for my viewing!
this is so funny, but every time you start a video i feel like i'm literally at my family's house and you're one of my uncles greeting me. you look and sound so much like the dentremonts i know.
Oh no, fighting the wife's paintings for wall space. Are you sleeping on the sofa!!! I'd love to print some bigger than A3 one day.
Very good much needed info in this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Professional looking art work. Amazing.
Thank you very much!
Don’t skimp on this, you’ll save money down the line not having to repeat on “wavy” acrylic …
thanks! My fireplace has an insulated liner inside it.
There used to be a guy WAY back, by the name of Max Lyons, who made Gigapixel images and prints, with only a 6 mp camera :) He was the original stitching guru :)
Your prints look fantastic BTW :)
As for too dark, the culprit is usually processing them on a monitor set too bright. Set it at 80pct, not 100% brightness.
Simon, another great video and whole heartily agree on printing your great images. One thing I didn't catch in your video - do you prefer framing your print or frameless? What's your criteria for that?
Frames for prints, frameless for metal or acrylic
Love!!!
great video SImon!
Nice digs! 🏡
Very helpful.
You and your damm videos have enticed me a new camera and a couple of new lenses; My wife is pissed! Thank you so very much, I havent had this much fun in quite a while. (A black and white of my lovely wife will be the first to be produced...)
Thanks again.
