Sitting here with my Paceship 23 in the driveway and winter weather outside.... This video is the closest I've come to sailing in months! Thanks for the posting.

Nogmaals mijn complimenten!

Hiya... if you are still online.. I am used to a tiller... wondering about tacking s/handed with a wheel... ?what is the black line you release just before the tack.
Also ….does she sail ok without the autohelm and balance sails...? I noticed you do the tack with no autohelm and she seems to point where you leave her?
Why did you release the mainsheet on the way round....?

Great video! What swell does the bay get up to? How fast does the Bav 36 enjoy in these conditions?

I would have loved to have made a video of our crossing from manistque mich. to beaver island in my fathers hinkley 41 in 45 knot s.w. winds across lake michigan I imagine it would have looked a lot like this one but that was before cell phones and their capabilities with videos.

Hi Alan .. I understand ... Its these extreme conditions where I feel very privileged to be out there ... and its why I started filming because I'd be on such a high when I got back that I never wanted it to end.
The wide angle lenses of action cameras always flatten out the waves and makes the wind look about half what it really is ... and as you know from crossing Lake Michigan in a gale, sailing in extreme stuff is so much more than just wind and waves, ...its the fear, doubt etc ... so while its nice to have footage, the emotion of the journey is what's so special and that never fades ;-)

what if he falls over jumping around like that, she just sails away without him, right?

Been there done it life on the slant. Video looks a little funny though, like boat superimposed on water. Timing perfect. When you tacked sail broke right on time.

God help you in a truly steep sea! That's a flat sea where I come from, the North Sea and Baltic.
Then again it probably feels like it in a boat that sails on it's ear like most modern yots do.

yer mate Ive had the pleasure of sailing across Bass Strait a few times in racing yachts - which is the piece of water between Australia and Tasmania - known as one of the widest patches of water in the world - where the southern ocean meets the warmer currents - with crazy weather and wave patterns via the relatively shallow water (its our version of the North Sea) ... and agree that the Bavaria prob wouldn't survive very long ... but I'm not dumb enough to even try as every yacht has its limits based on its size, design and build.

The Bavaria has a reputation of a minimalistic design, How does she handle this heavy weather?

I had this same boat in Croatia a few years ago and we had a bit of wind as well. For a production boat it pointed very well and it handled very nicely. I owned a CN35 blue water boat for years, which is made for ocean closings, and this Bavaria was really impressive. I had a Jeanneau 39 in Finland in 2004. We were out to sea, way out, and we were hit by a nasty storm. This thing was a pig in water..... Way to beamy, impossible to keep on tack and was just a horrible boat. The Bavaria is a nice choice for renting.

Finally a video on heavier winds with the standard weekend boat. I started to wonder if you could sail them at all in these conditions.

I'm actually wearing an inflatable vest ... and a PLB beacon ... pretty important when sailing solo around these waters

I doubt a Barvaria could stand up to anything but much more than a force 6 .there either over canvassed or under ballasted with a not so seaworthy lines and beam to lenght ratio.
Lots of fancy accommodation better suited to cosy marina's

Yer they are a production yacht so not designed or built for sustained heavy conditions .... more for charters in the med ... but my Bav36 was from the vintage where they were a little better built (2003) and I pushed her for over 10-years through Moreton Bay's windiest days and she did remarkably well .... Ive done 5 Sydney-to-Hobarts (Includ the 1998) 20+ Brisb-Gladstones etc on everything from TP52's to cruising yachts ... so I know a little bit about how rough the ocean can get and how yachts handle ... and the Bavaria shape (beam, rocker etc) is a seaworthy design ...she was excellent in a following sea, didn't pound to windward, balanced rudder and small amount of weather helm, good rudder grip etc .. so its from experience that I speak.

Dude. Its sounds like you’re talking about a wooden rowboat.
Its still a sailboat that’s capable of the most if handled properly.
It’s actually very popular in Norway witch tells a lot.
