Also, part of the reason a lot of us have a special connection to "Illest of our Time" is that it was Ren's first release after going mega viral with "Hi Ren". There's a really, REALLY special ~4 minute video out there of Ren checking out the reactors popping up right after dropping this song, and it's incredible and emotional and real & he gives a ton of props to reactors. This was when Ren really, really started to understand that the "Hi Ren" phenomenon wasn't a one-off.
I agree, I remember that live and it was soon after I found him too on Knox losing it reaction. When he was checking out reactions he was so surprised how many reactors already ready posted, and he checked Knox and waiting to hear him catch the Stranger Things bars.

I absolutely loved how touched and amazed he was that so many reactors had already uploaded reactions 💕 I remember him refreshing and just repeating “look at dat … look at dat!” It must have been an incredible feeling, especially since he wasn’t sure how being across the globe in treatment would impact his momentum ✨ Little did he know how much crazier the year would become!!

Seven Sins, my guy. IMHO, its some of Ren's best rapping. To that point, Love Music pt. 4 has several really good pockets in it, and it's a "fun rap" track. Love the reactions and the honesty. 👍👍 EDIT: Wicked Ways is 100% up there, too.
I just love the kind of old school The Prodigy vibes in this beat. So many details to hold my attention, and the groove! Love the flow switches and the references he makes in the lyrics 😊

I'm with you. It's about "Mercury I am Freddie" that I really start to sink into this song. And the great thing about Ren fans is - we're all following our hero into being ... yes, "adult" and compassionate and embracing of other opinions.
I feel like if you’re a big fan of an artist, you should want to hear all opinions on them and have discussions about them. Also no artist has a 100% flawless song list. I always, always appreciate your honest takes and that you do it in a respectful way- and I hope Ren fans feel the same

I never knew which type of rap of Ren's you did or didn't like. I just remember you using Ren to get a point across about how you didn't like his rapping and why. The most recent one was you being a judge on that Disco Doc contest and using Ren as an example of some type of rap you didn't like.
My favorite Ren is a guitar in his hands and singing, I love the little raps he puts in his music to ad a little variety.

I've heard some rappers and singers that make my ears bleed. Ren hasn't done that with anything he has done, but there are definitely songs I skip when playing his CD 's in the car. Some I honestly have to be in a mood for. Thanks for the reaction. Ren is authentic, real and raw on his music (I've listened/watched over 200 songs on his catalogs and collabs) and he does such a wide variety and every genre I never get tired of it. To many one trick ponies out there and they get boring quickly.

For sure, I really appreciate this comment and you giving your perspective. So to put it in more context as to the Ren style of rapping I do like, my favorites by him (so far) are Power, Genesis, Troubles, and Murderer (which that react is dropping as a Premier tomorrow, so be there for it). So that should give you some kind of idea of what I do like. I have and probably will always prefer Ren's singing. It just seems more of his comfort zone (to me) and where he organically shines. But he's such a good writer, I can see why he'd want to do some spittin' as well.
So anyway, I hope that helps. Ren is not just a good artist to me but also a good tool to get points across when it comes to music because he can do so many different things, it's nice using him to bridge gaps and make points.
After i ran across Hi Ren for the first time i subbed his channel, then went to the bottom of his list and worked my way up to current, it was so enthralling to watch his growth 😁👍
It's been honestly one of my favorite things as someone who was very new to Ren to see where he was and where he is now. It's night and day in a lot of ways.
Thank god not everyone has the same taste, otherwise every man would be running after me! 🤣
Finally a reactor who speaks his mind and says he doesn't like a number by Ren. I've seen hundreds of reactors and everyone was/is raving and, especially with newer reactors, I'm always questioning if they rave because they truly like it, or to hop on the Ren-train and hoping to be noticed by the RENegades.
I love, love, love Ren (and Illest of our Time).... BUT... I don't know 💩about rap. Ren is the first one I've had a connection with because we have/are walking parallel paths.

Illest of our time is one of Ren's older songs. I think he's more relaxed and confident with new songs now, he doesn't throw everything he knows into one song like this one. I think people like you Bradley will enjoy his rapping more now.
P. S Illest of our time is one of my favorite songs from the Sick Boi album, I just like hype songs with an even more hype beat😊

That's very sweet of you and I really appreciate that. I don't think I've ever given anyone on my channel (or anywhere for that matter) the attitude that I'm just flat out trying to diss or be negative to their artist. Especially when I actually LIKE Ren lol. If people can't handle MY opinion, I'm shocked at what some of these more negative TH-cam channels would do to their psyche lol. So thank you for that, I do appreciate it.

You’re right, he wrote and recorded a bunch of songs / videos before he left for Canada for medical treatment. He wanted to have songs and videos he could roll out while he was away. So this was from before Hi Ren. The reason he did Seven Sins and Money Game 3 was because he was afraid some of the Sick Boi album wouldn’t measure up to the expectations of the huge new audience he acquired.
The original goal for the Sick Boi album was for Ren to pay tribute to rap and hip hop. So I think he allowed himself to play around with different styles. I think this one was more about Ren having fun with the word play and the doubles.

Honestly, I like Rens old rap more than a lot of his new stuff. “Hold On” is fantastic. “Insomnia” and “depression” are also really good. I also think they’d be more your style.

Its all good bro. Honesty goes a long way in this world. I also didn't really vibe with animal flow or illest of our time after the hype but that doesn't mean Ren as an artist is bad. I still rock with the rest of it. Most of the renegades are pretty chill from what I've seen. There is a group, just like with everything on the interwebs, that are a "little" pushy (big quotes on little) and obsessive with it. But most of us appreciate the honesty. Much love ✌️
Illest is one of my absolute favorites, it just scratches something very primal for me. I love the gritty, grungy, dirty production, I LOVE all the nerdy pop-culture references, I love the self-referential lyric nods to other Ren songs, I love the ego, and I love even more that the "ego" of being "illest" is flipped as a double like it was in Sick Boi.
Yeah, I also think I'm biased because this is the first drop I was there live for in chat, and the first Twitch stream I joined, and it was So. Effing. Heartwarming. to see how emotional Ren got when he saw all the reactors posting and all the fan love he was getting, especially since it was on his birthday. So yeah... a bit of a golden shine on Illest for that, too.
As far as timeline, this was written, recorded, and video shot before Hi Ren, even though it was released after.

You said in the end so many things that I agree. I'll ALWAYS support Ren as a person and as an artist he is! I greatly appreciate the values he stands for and the art he makes, and the fact that he so very often puts some line or lines about human life or social ethics in his songs when he is just playing and experimenting or flexing, like this. You're right in my opinion, nobody would make always something that I like.
Hi Ren was the first for me. Sick Boi record came later, so my "Rens" for some time was his old stuff, Freckled Angels and Demos Vol 1 and 2 records which I bought immediately. They hit hard. And ever since I've been following his doings.

Ren and his guitar are definitely my favourite Ren “mode”. His rap is hit and miss for me, but I actually think this has some of his best bars in it (the Stranger Things scheme to kick it off… *chef’s kiss*)

You will appreciate and I think really like Castles Made of Sand. It was a bonus track so not on YT but it's on Bandcamp. Also, Penitence, Heretic and Insomnia. I knew you wouldn't rock with this one. It's not what you like. All of those above are deep and lyrically amazing. Everybody Drops, another great one. Seven Sins is amazing lyrically but I'm not sure how you will vibe to the music. A ton of beat and flow switches.

As much as I love Ren, I love Prof just as much! Pease do Pack a Lunch feat Redman, Devil's Gate feat Kevin Gates, Tarzan, Cutthroat, Big Hungry Monster, Creek Boy, and Barbreaker! 😁 I have listened to Ren's whole catalog, and theres honestly not a song I don't like....Sure there's definitely ones I like way more than others, but I think because I like such a wide variety of music, and he literally does every genre, it's impossible to not like it all! He's the only artist I can say that about!

You're fine dude. No-one in the Ren community is going to hate for you giving your opinion. Rather that than pretending to like it just for likes. Personally I love the song and Animal Flow, and I think they played a big part in how quick his fan base grew last year.
Most new Ren fans had come because of Hi Ren and wanted something different than the normal run of the mill pop songs and hip hop songs. Ren gave them different and it paid off. I honestly don't think he's capable of just producing the same stuff all the time, his ADHD won't let him get that comfortable. So if you don't like some stuff that's fine. The great thing about Ren is that he really doesn't care if some people hate what he does, he's a true artist who follows his instinct, rather than be told what he must produce to satisfy statistics and sales.
And that's exactly what it is. It's weird to me that (and I'll be honest, it's only been a few out of the almost 100s of comments lol) that are saying how they don't understand and love every single song Ren makes. Yeah, I'm just going to call bullshit internally and move on. They just like Ren, and that's totally cool. It's no secret I like Ren, but even Ren probably pens stuff and goes "I wish I had done X" or "Hmm, that isn't my best but it's good". And that's okay. So yeah, I agree, most of this fanbase (hell, it's my fan base too!) knows I come from a good place and respect and appreciate the discussions. So thanks for that.

I like honesty, it's good that you say what you personally think. But don't take it for granted that what you think is right and true for everyone else.
As for Ren, it's not easy to find a rap song without singing. His rap is so melodic that he almost sings while rapping. I think that might be one of the reasons why so many of us, who have never listened to rap before, like when Ren raps.
I think I've listened to everything Ren has released. I really like (almost) everything! There are barely a handful that I don't play on repeat and they are some of his very earliest songs, when he was driven by the industry and was more mainstream. And to echo you, I don't hate them, they are just not for me.
But I will try to make a top 10 (actually an impossible task) with as little singing as possible. Here it is in no particular order

8:44 I can objectively say I like every song I've heard from Ren, and I've heard all of the things he's released, regardless of whether or not you think it's possible, and it has nothing at all to do with his personality. Quite frankly, I'm sometimes at odds with him personally when he posts on Twitter. Like what you like, for sure, but sometimes you're presenting your opinion as fact 9:46 and that's unfortunate.
I will stand behind that I've never on this entire planet met anyone, out of all my platforms, out of all the places I've visited, out of all the conversations I've had, out of all the podcasts I've listened to, out of all the artist reviews I've read, met someone who's liked every single song an artist has dropped. I am a huge Ren fan but I agree with you. It took me a couple of times to enjoy Animal Flow but I still don't love Illest. He rarely misses but he does miss. I also love that you give an honest reaction. I only know of one or two other reactors who will ever say anything bad about what they are listening to because they are playing to the artists fans. You are constructive and that is perfect.

You are the first person I've ever heard arguing about the need to separate the artist from the art where the person wasn't trying to rationalize listening to the work of a truly monsterous human. But you are right. If we are going to be faithful to the premise it does mean we don't give prizes and accolades to the people we like, just because we like them. It is important for the work to stand on its own merits. I happen to think much of Ren's work does, just because he pours everything into it with the intensity of someone using it both as an escape from pain and a way of relating to the world after a decade of isolation (even if you are surrounded by friends if they don't understand chronic illness its still lonely). But I dont enjoy all of them. The Tale Of Trilogy is too dark for me. Good for you for being honest about what isn't your cup of tea. Reactors tend to get love for loving what is suggested by the viewers. I can see it being upsetting for some to hear you disagree. But taste is entirely personal. You aren't saying anything but that some things aren't for you, and if people can't take it, they don't need to keep watching.
This is what happens when you do reactions to rabid fan bases. :) It comes with the territory. Lol. Not listening to reason and blindly supporting someone are two sides of the same coin I've noticed at times, so I like putting in as many extra nuggets of rationale as possible, even when I shouldn't need to. -shrug- Especially when, it's like, my opinion haha.
Yeah, that will never be me, just liking someone or something because people want me to, and I've always encouraged people to unsub if they can't handle discourse, debate, or discussion. That's a lot of what you're going to get here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm not going to bash. I think this style is some of what appeals to the older generation. It's exactly that slow burn that draws in old heads. That said, I enjoy it, but I wouldn't say it is one of his best.

I think The Humger and What You Want are my favorite Ren raps. I can dig Genesis and Power and that one edm song he remade, cant think of the name. I just think, as much as Ren loves to rap, its not where he shines, just isnt. Gimme that busking cover of I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop over any of his rap songs any day, THAT shit was FIIIIRRE ❤️🔥 Hes so deep, can evoke such emotion and has such an invredible take on humanity and it kinda just gets lost when he raps.

I definitely wouldn’t have recommended you this song. If you wanted a genuinely good slow real song from REN that isn’t corny like this then there are only a few. Castles Made of Sand is by far the best imo.

This MV was done in an abandoned building and apparently they had to guard their stuff from a bunch of homeless people :) Doing Ren's journey is nowhere near as "important" as doing NF in order in my opinion.

I have actually done The Hunger, and I liked that one. It isn't better than some of the others of his rapping I like to ME (Troubles, Murderer, Power, or Genesis) but it's definitely top 7 of his rapping.

Sevens sins is really good. And I agree some of Rens rapping isn’t for me. I feel bad that it’s some of the most fun stuff. I like this song but there’s something about his voice in this one that sounds off to me. I actually like some of his older stuff but it feels more like poetry to me than some of this.
