  • A day of what I ate on Thursday May 10th with Gestational Diabetes while trying to keep my glucose levels under control at 35.5 weeks pregnant. This is based on my drs protocol. Everyone will be different but here are some tips and tricks I've learned so far. Also, it is very similar to what they recommend for the pregnancy diet for everyone. Eating 6 small meals throughout the day.
    Fasting Blood Sugar: 86
Breakfast: 12 oz Coffee with Boost Glucose Control (about 3/4 of a bottle)
    Breakfast Blood Sugar: 112
    Snack 1: Annie's Granola bar
Lunch: Panera Bread 1/2 Southwest Chile Lime Ranch Salad with no chicken, cup of black bean soup, unsweet ice tea
    Lunch Blood Sugar: 137
Snack 2: Strawberry, cottage cheese, almond, Waffle
Dinner: Gouda and onion salad with wheat croutons
    Dinner Blood Sugar: 106
Snack 3: 1/2 multigrain english muffin with peanut butter and 4 strawberries

Thank you for this! I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes pretty early on-at 12 weeks. I was tested early because of a family history of diabetes. It can be hard knowing other pregnant woman who can eat what they crave during pregnancy when I can’t, but seeing folks go through GD and talk honestly about it helps me cope so much!

Did you have to be on meds or did you control it with diet? Im 16 weeks today and its been hard controling my sugars

    • @AprilDaugherty

I ended up being able to control entirely with diet! It was difficult but it got much easier the longer I did it. The hardest thing was gaining all of the weight I lost on the diet back once I went back to my old eating habits post-pregnancy/GD. 😂 I also delivered a healthy baby boy-6 lb. 5 oz. and tested negative for diabetes at my 6 week post-birth check-up.

I'm 23 weeks pregnant and I'm getting tested for digestional diabetes tomorrow. I'm kinda nervous about it, but watching your videos makes me a little less nervous, and it makes me miss my days as a vegetarian. If I get told I have diabetes tomorrow, I'm gonna to back to being vegetarian. Thank you for the motivation you are giving me through these videos ♡

Congratulations on the baby! Hope you’re enjoying new motherhood. I’m on 3rd baby 28 weeks-gestational for 2nd time and my fastings are always a little high. Last pregnancy was on just a bit of glyburide at night for fastings. Had a very healthy girl. Anyway-I’m trying different snacks cause I’m 2 weeks in but can’t find the perfect snack before bed to control sugars. I don’t always walk everyday with work and 2 other kids trying! Anyway I would love to stay off of meds but maybe inevitable! Just wondering if you had snacks at night that worked for you? Thanks for the videos-I totally understand what you went through and it’s more manageable 2nd time around.

Maria Earnhart's BOOK NOOK thanks! Yes it was difficult. I can’t imagine managing it with 2 little ones. I found that non dairy protein worked. My favorite was half a whole grain English muffin with peanut butter. Sometimes I would add half a banana or a couple of berries. I tried yogurt and yasso yogurt bars but those seemed to spike it. They put me on gluburide too but I broke out in hives.

I failed my 1 hour and threw up 30 mins into my 3 hr today...I’m pretty positive I don’t even have it but doctor said instead of retesting just go to the diabetes counselor and monitor sugars. So that sucks 😞 but your positive attitude makes me feel better

As far as finding the time to set aside to eat while at work, GD is a medical condition and pregnancy is considered a disability. Provide your employer with documentation stating your GD and let them know that you HAVE to eat at certain times. It is illegal for them to refuse.

That’s also the difficult part for me. I find that protein bars super helpful. I also find nearby places with salad or even subway for the days I don’t have time to pack lunch. I never had to. They thought I may have to because my morning fasting #s were high about 50% of the time. They said it would get harder to control as the placenta grows but I was able to control it so I didn't need insulin.
