He's fought wildlings for 30 years, been a veteran of multiple gréat wars: he's seen it all!, He's fought with and against many army's in Westeros, and he knóws: most of them are paid soldiers with training: the Northmen are far more experienced fighters: Greatjon Umber knéw they could defeat any army in the open field, pure on tactics and battle-experience.

The Greatjon was to be taken captive, and held as hostage to ensure the powerful House Umber's loyalty, yet the Greatjon proved to be far more capable then anyone thought he would: It took 7 or 8 men to subdue him, and still he managed to kill 1 or 2, and gravely wound 2-3 others? Thats one BEAST of a Lord though!
at 0:45 I just love the way Richard Madden delivers that one word, "Mother". It makes him look so much younger, like a little boy who's missed his mom so much. And I love the way you can clearly see him trying to restrain himself and remember that he's supposed look emotionally strong and manly around all this war talk. Its great.

Where I differ radically from D&D is that I recognise her story as being a heartbreaking tragedy of being a romantic (as in, believer in destiny and birthright) ideologue in an unforgiving environment. Because Theon was estranged from his father Balon, Alfie avoided to meet and talk with Patrick, they came only together when they had to shoot!

I've always liked how Greatjon addresses his liege lord as "Ned" rather than Lord Stark; it's as though they're relatives. Little moments like those from earlier in the series subtly highlighted how much Eddard Stark was regarded and admired by the northern lords.
This is what a true mother looks like. Cersei may have loved her children, but she never supported them or their choices. Catelyn may not have agreed with Robb fighting in battle, but she understood he had to, not just for the north & his father, but for himself too. She certainly didn't agree with him marrying talisa, but learned that his happiness meant more to her then some promise. I really wish the Boltons didn't betray them.
Because Cersei was Tywin, she wanted to control them in her own way but was never really successful the way her father was. I totally agree with your opinion on Cat. Her love for them was fierce and pure. The series irritated me towards the end because she's barely mentioned, at all, even by her family.

Always loved this scene. "If you lose we die." Sometimes the best way to cope is lay it all out, recognize the circumstance, and move forward without reservation.
Anybody else missing Jon Umber/The Greatjon? I know he was a minor character and in the show for one season, but he remains one of my favorite characters in the entire show.

In the books he doesn't die (despite being at the rw), he fights everyone off unarmed and they only manage to take him prisoner, but the actor left the show in season 1, so I don't know what the show will do.
Its a tragedy the actor for Greatjon Umber couldn't return for season 2 and 3. The Blackfish and Lord Karstark were awesome characters sure, but that man had quite the presence, and its definitely missed once you notice he doesn't come back and just dies unceremoniously offscreen (though apparently not at the Red Wedding)

This show used to mean something. There was more impact in this scene, these 3 minutes, than in all of the final season. No rushing, no bs. Everything made sense. Such a shame it ended the way it did.

Who else felt as proud of Robb as Catelyn? I admired how he played his strategies and he focused on their massive ego to bring them down and now the lannisters are panicking.

I've always liked how Greatjon addresses his liege lord as "Ned" rather than Lord Stark; it's as though they're relatives. Little moments like those from earlier in the series subtly highlighted how much Eddard Stark was regarded and admired by the northern lords.

This is what a true mother looks like. Cersei may have loved her children, but she never supported them or their choices. Catelyn may not have agreed with Robb fighting in battle, but she understood he had to, not just for the north & his father, but for himself too. She certainly didn't agree with him marrying talisa, but learned that his happiness meant more to her then some promise. I really wish the Boltons didn't betray them.
Because Cersei was Tywin, she wanted to control them in her own way but was never really successful the way her father was.
I totally agree with your opinion on Cat. Her love for them was fierce and pure. The series irritated me towards the end because she's barely mentioned, at all, even by her family.

Always loved this scene. "If you lose we die." Sometimes the best way to cope is lay it all out, recognize the circumstance, and move forward without reservation.

Its a tragedy the actor for Greatjon Umber couldn't return for season 2 and 3. The Blackfish and Lord Karstark were awesome characters sure, but that man had quite the presence, and its definitely missed once you notice he doesn't come back and just dies unceremoniously offscreen (though apparently not at the Red Wedding)
