So Mike Dawson, the man responsible for the first game, (yes he did make HIMSELF the main character) refused to do Darkseed 2. The company still owned the rights to the character however. So they deliberately made him a massive wimp, and had the voice actor try and sound as much like a whiny jerk as possible.

Are you sure they made Mike whiny simply to spite the real Dawson? Perhaps they just wanted the protaginist to have that personality. That would be why you should think twice before signing off rights to a charater you made in your likeness.

So when Jack kills Mike, its basically suicide and murder at the same time.
The only thing that confused me is if mike dies then how does jack stay alive if that is his counterpart that only exsisted because he was alive? So if Jack klills mike they both die so it would be smarter for jack to stay in the darkworld. Or nor kill mike at all.

If you played Dark Seed 2, whenever the Dark World version of someone dies, then the Light World version of that person dies too. Vice verse as well.

The picture that says "no es un cigarro" is correct. It's not a cigar, it's a PICTURE of a cigar. It's a joke.
It's actualy a Sigmound Freud joke on his "Sometimes a Cigar Is Just a Cigar" quotation.

Yes, in the 20s freud was under investigation about how he see ocult meaning in everything. So the agent who was investigating him ask him whats up with his cigars he used all the time.. so he awnser "Sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar". After it it become a reference, as you told there is John Green reference but with pipe, there is Harlan Ellison about when people try to find meaning in his work and he told something as "sometimes a book is just a book" and.. Darkseed II :P

Agreed. He's not overly loud and goofy like in his later videos (which I find annoying more often than not), but he still has good jokes here while keeping it more serious like his older videos (which are way too glum and usually unfunny). It's like the best of his original style and his usual one combined

The cigar painting is a reference to a painting by Rene Magritte. There is a pipe on it, with text under it that says "ceci n'est pas une pipe". I think it's called The Treachery of Images.

Arksworn You got me there. I was trying to find a fitting metaphor for not being negative about stuff, but I couldn't remember any, so I improvised. Don't be a subatomic particle about it, though, I'm sure there's some kind of logic to that.
Also, it's a reference to Freud. "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar", but since that ISN'T a cigar according to the text... it's a dick. :D So it's double-funny because it's in a psychiatrist's office, and it's referencing Freud (even though Freud probably isn't actually the one who came up with the cigar thing, it's a popular belief).

OH, and PeanutButterGamer, at 3:40 in the psychologist's office... It ISN'T a cigar, it's a drawing of a cigar. It is a reference to Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte and his painting of a pipe. It comes from the idea that a painting of something is not the thing itself, just like a word is not the thing itself, or my favorite example of the idea, "The map is not the territory".

Freud was of course famous for his insistence that virtually all of human psychology owed itself to an obsession with sex, but the quote serves as a reminder that not every seemingly phallic thing is or is meant to be taken as such. The "No es un cigar" poster, therefore, is countering that sentiment by claiming that it actually is implicitly imbued with sexual meaning, something that's also appropriate for this game given Mike Dawson's many sexual hangups as manifested in the H.R. Giger-styled Dark World.

The picture with the cigar on it is actually a reference to a similar picture with a pipe on it, that says "c'est non un pipe", because it IS no pipe, but a just a picture of a pipe, or in this case a cigar. The idea behind it, is to understand, that our understanding of the world ist just a compromise. The word "tree" for instance deosn't look like the thing it names at all, so we simply agreed on its meaning in a code (language) we have also made up. I think this little notion fits kinda good in to the mood of the game (you know, the question of what's real and stuff).

What I love about these 2 games that alot of people don't seem to ever point out (1 more so than 2) is the athmosphere the game gives off. The music, wierd moments, people & regular world art design of the 1st game & the very odd people of the 2nd game alonside the H.R Giger world help shape this very surreal feeling that feels comfy, awkward, eerie, gloom & freaky at the same time.

No, Mike Dawson was a real person who was involved in making Darkseed 1, naming, voicing, and designing the character after himself. He didn't voice him in the 2nd game, though.

Darkseed is a game based on the art of the swiss artist H.R. Giger.
He is also the guy who modeled the Xenomorph from the movie "Alien" and he also did the movie design in the movie "Promethious" from 2012.
His art is just incredible in my opinion

@BeeryGamer Not at all! Though personally, I feel more credit goes to the game itself. It's just an intriguing game. To be warned though, Darkseed 2 is hard to get running correctly. You need an older operating system, and even then sometimes the game glitches to the point of being unplayable. If you can get it to work though, it's worth it, imo.
Darkseed 1 works much better, assuming you understand how to use DOSBox.

Madara Uchiha The Baphomet statues were created by HR Giger (pronounced Ghee-Gher like Karate Gi and Tony Tiger Grrr, or even Gair depending on what German dialect using for you English only Americans!) based from his masterpiece "The Spell IV." It was also displayed in numerous other Giger accessories, like the Baphomet Tarot deck, very strickingly dark and beautiful however complete... It only featured the Major, rather then Minor Arcana.

Yes I agree, it is creepy (actually nightmarish), which makes him a great magician, bring his darkside from the dreamworld of his night terrors (which I also suffer) into reality. It is very much a spiritual awakening when one can release this raw energy.

did i ever tell you how glad I am you examined the toilet in mike's mom's house? in the retsupusrae they spent so much time in that bathroom and never clicked on the toilet once for the best comment in the game
Neither Slowbeef or Diabeetus played DS2, they just commentated over a recording by ADVGamesForever. Not interacting with the toilet was the least of that playthrough's problems, but in a way the utter incompetence of the player beautifully complemented Dawson's character.

The artwork in Darkseed 2 looked exactly like some of Geiger's work, so they either used the real stuff or took the time to make exact replicas.

Mike dawson was the writer and developer and voice actor in darkseed 1 then later he left cyberdreams to do tv writing. Now he is a programming and gaming design teacher at UCLA.
