    I had one of these buzz me off Oceanside, California (US marines primary base), while I was heading south to Mexico in my sailboat. One moment they were a spec on the horizon, a moment later they were fifty yards off my stern. Another moment later they had disappeared. Never seen anything remotely as fast on the water. Impressive!

    I like the Swedish assault craft and the US Riverine patrol boats. As someone who has spent a lot of time working on the water, they make sense. Open decks you can work on and overcome whatever comes up. Then there is the 'Mark 6 US patrol boat' this looks like it was designed by someone who has never used a boat in their life. It more like an early 2000's floating LAN party 😂

      Sweden has an extensive archipelago on both the east and west coast, and the CB90 has that big door in the front for quick dismount onto the many hundreds and thousands of islands. Our defense ministry has a contract to buy the M134 'minigun' and put it on our CB90s, and there's plans for eight boats fitted with 120mm heavy mortars. Lots of firepower in small packages.

      Sweden is going to equip eight boats with 120mm mortars in the coming years. If anyone would wonder why is because of the Swedish archipelago with thousands of islands. One of the boats can hide in cover behind one island and provide support to other boats dismounting troops on another island.

      The CB90 is a Swedish boat made in Sweden but used by Norway etc (our neighbors) and not only used in Sweden. Living near the west coat it's about 50/50 if the flags are Swedish/Norwegian. I can literally walk to Norway in 10 minutes, so seeing their flags on Swedish made hardware is common.

      Yeah that sure wasn't the initial purpose... It's not only used by Sweden though. It has been sold to Peruvian, Mexican and Malaysian navies among others. As for the Swedish waters only the uppermost parts of the Baltic sea (Gulf of Bottnia) has thick ice every winter. The Gulf stream make our waters a lot warmer than Alaskan waters on a similar latitude and out coastal winter climate would be closer to that of Maine.

    • @norsenomad
      @norsenomad ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, these are Norwegian Version S90N from the same manufacturer, Dockstadvarvet in Sweden. This is filmed during a NATO exercise in North Norway, where US Marines were introduced to the S90N by the Kystjegerkommandoen (Coastal Hunter Command, The Royal Norwegian Navy's maritime ISTAR unit), who operate the S90N combat boats daily. The S90N (S for Stridsbåt, meaning Combat Boat in Norwegian, and N for the unique Norwegian Version of the CB90) has a different specification by the Norwegian Navy with several changes to the standard version: it is an adaption to the rougher Atlantic and Arctic coastline of Norway than the calmer Swedish Baltic coastline. This means slightly raised deck for full standing height below deck, watertight bow compartments for safety, two Browning M2 50 cal, Kongsberg Sea Protector remote-controlled weapon station (RWS), even Hellfire missiles on the RWS was tested (status unknown), large power generator and different electrical system, sophisticated Kongsberg Seatex navigation system, and rear anchor system for self-towing off shallows.

      @@zoom5024 You are absolutely right. I’ve just verified by photos of other CB90 versions. Thank you!
      The Kongsberg Protector RWS was first installed and tested out on the S90N in the 1990s, with options of a third M2, Hellfire or other weapons. There.
      Anyway, my main point was not the M2 or the RWS, but the fact that more than 400 changes were made to make the S90N properly adapted for use along the long Norwegian coast, particularly in the north.
      The standard CB90 was a very capable combat boat from the beginning, and became even more capable with the N-modifications - at least for the Arctic and Atlantic coast environment.
