Another interesting twist of SCP-3999 has to do with the tendency of characters in the SCP wiki, specially recurring ones, to become a sort of stand-in for the author. While this trend has died down over the years, it is an element so present in the Foundation that author avatars are some of the most remembered characters in the wiki, and even more so outside of it. Taking Talloran as a "fiction suit" of the author and adding a little dose of the A-S proposal for SCP-001, you get a really dark and gruesome tale of a godlike entity, an author, destroying themselves over and over again while trying to grasp some intangible essence of making an engaging piece of writing, until the piece of themselves they are torturing fights back. This desperate search for a good horror idea is even present in the piece itself with the constant addressing of "SCP-3999 is..." which anyone who has attempted to write an SCP will know as the "magic sentence" that turns any creative idea into an SCP draft. There is a lot of controversy surrounding 3999, not only due to it shattering the fourth wall repeatedly, making suspension of disbelief really difficult and essentially mantaining engagement due to what the piece connects with the SCP community rather than it "standing on its own". However, SCP-3999 is also a testament of how difficult, stressful and taxing the life of someone haunted by the imagery of the wiki can be, if they let them consume too much of their time and thoughts. It is so easy to become enraptured and obsessed with the world of the SCP Foundation. I like to think of SCP-3999 as the SCP to end all SCPs, and the funny thing is that it in fact was that until series 5 started. One could even make it a nice closing to the setting as portrayed to the A-S proposal. SCP-001, the first, describes how the world is ruled by horror writers. SCP-3999, the last, describes how the fictional beings can fight back and take a toll on their obsessive and sadistic gods' minds.
This. Honestly, I think SCP-3999 is the only SCP I would personally consider worthy of SCP-001. What I love about this is that it's basically a statement on the concept of the fourth wall. Breaking the fourth wall isn't bad if you do it right because when fictional stories are made, there is ALWAYS a fourth wall by definition. When you take away the fourth wall, the story becomes real, and that's kind of what happened here. The fact of the matter is that, to the SCP foundation, every one of us readers/writers is an eldritch god. The SCP foundation isn't real and has no free will because it's a story and is ultimately fated to go down a certain path, so they literally cannot fathom the whims of us gods because it's purely deterministic by our world's logic and because we don't allow them to. To people in the SCP foundation, the processes we go through to write stories are reminiscent of SCP-3999. We murder people in their 'universe' over and over again for reasons they cannot possibly comprehend as a one-dimensional story, and because we, their gods, created the SCP foundation. In other words, this should be SCP-001 because while other stories in the lore say that other gods exist because they created the universe or civilizations made out of flesh and bone or whatever, I never bought that they were these massively powerful eldritch gods because nothing they did truly terrified me. But THIS is actually terrifying, because WE could just as easily be in a deterministic universe like that one, and WE could be at the fickle whims of something exponentially more complex than us. SCP-3999 vs something like the Crimson King is a perfect example of show don't tell, and that is why it is the ultimate SCP in my eyes.

"Who are you, before a human who is ready to fight?" is the rawest shit. A great part of the SCPwiki is how the format can be used and abused for new, creative forms of storytelling. Even in the default format, putting the containment procedures before the description is a simple yet superb way of building suspense and reader confusion. This skip takes that principle and runs with it, straight off a cliff. It gives you containment procedure type suspense with the whole document, pushing it further and further back until you've already figured it out for yourself, along with Talloran. This SCP. Such a bizzare yet intriguing concept. How the author managed to perfectly combine the essence of insanity, mistery, and suffering in a beautiful saturation is just astonishing. Fell in love with this masterpiece in an instant.
So essentially, SCP-3999 is LordStonefish, the author of the article, depicted as an omnipotent and infinitely malevolent reality bender. The strikeouts and incoherencies in the article are basically depicting the creative process of writing an SCP, coming up with ideas and striking them out when they don't work. What's unique here is that no matter what LordStonefish came up with, it always had Talloran as the victim. Talloran was powerless against 3999 until he became aware that this was what was happening to him, and the only way to defeat 3999 was to destroy himself, preventing him from being tortured by it any longer. 3999 existed solely to torture him, and if Talloran could finally die once and for all, 3999 would cease to exist.
I find this particular story to be one of my favorites. It’s basically a lone man taking on an omnipotent god and actually winning not through some ridiculous power but through sheer force of will. 3999’s downfall was its obsessive hatred with taluran. I don't see what's so special about this one really, kind of a self insert "woah nobcoherent" words which has been done 5 other times. It doesn't take a genius to write gibberish.
Felipe Jaquez it was meant as a joke dude. I’ve been reading about the SCP universe for about 2 to 3 years now and my joke is based on the fact that it’s always possible for someone to add to others stories. If it actually did become apart of the story I’d laugh my ass off but also be really interested in how people would add it in. So get that stick out of your ass mate. Please. It looks uncomfortable.

@@barbequerbarbarian The story fits with that being the ending. He hated himself so much that he did worse than kill himself "now". He killed his existence from "before".

This one, alongside SCP-3000 is in my opinion one of the most thematically beautiful SCPs. I thought it was cool as I read the SCP Page, but then I started digging more and more into it and how it's a partially autobiographical, representing LordStonefish's (the author) psyche, beautifully showing all the madness and helplessness. I honestly loved it. Probably my favorite SCP alongside 3000.
It occurs to me that, in-universe, any doctor could write up an SCP entry like this about some terrible anomalous entity/location with amnestic or reality bending effects that has been neutralized, and people would pretty much have no reason not to believe it. “Huh. It’s in the database, so it must have been worth cataloguing at some point.”
This is my favourite SCP. I believe that the scariest concepts in the SCP universe are the ones that can unravel reality itself. The corruption of reasonable reality. Without a foundation of reason or consistency a universe will devolve into nothing but nonsense and random static. I can't help but think that this phenomenon (SCP 3999) is the same or similar to the Pattern which SCP 2528 described. According to 2528 our universe was created from a chaotic void and someday our universe shall be consumed by a chaotic void. We may have already seen the first instance of this in SCP 3930. Perhaps 3999 is another example of this. Perhaps all anomalies are lessor examples of this, as all anomalies seam to defy the laws of reason and reality in some way. Taken as a whole, one might say that the SCP website seems to demonstrates a "pattern" of unreasonable unreality amidst its various entries. I love your videos, both SCP and otherwise. Please keep up the great work.
Yeah 3999 is one of my favourite SCP aswell, right next to 3812(A weaker version of it at least what i think it is) and the opposite builder bear(That Medic bear was sad) Now what i think about 3999 is that.... not just the author can create 3999 Everyone i mean *Everyone and everything* in the universe can create 3999 just by having Imaginations
This SCP is basically taking the usual "Cosmic horrors, the grand universe and higher beings, being completely uncaring of humanity and everything it does." then answering the question "What if that higher being DID care about humanity, and specifically focused its attention on one person?"
This. Out of all the SCPs, this scares me the most. In fact, this may be the only one that fills me with true fear. As someone with Derealization/Depersonalization disorder and Borderline Personality disorder who has to deal with the world sometimes feeling unreal for a moment, this fills me with a fear too familiar. I actually have to take breaks when listening to this because it's triggering derealization and even had to take my anxiety medication because it induced a panic attack. Jesus christ whoever wrote this really knows how to cater to an incredibly niche, existential fear of a select group of people. My personal reality being stripped away from me while kept in the hands of others is possibly the most terrifying thing I can imaging. Scarier than death. Scarier than the fear that yields from thinking about how death might feel. Bravo to the SCP community. This is the one that really got me. I can deal with the universe ending monsters. I can deal with the world ending parasites and even the world ending devil allegory, but at least everyone around you is also experiencing the same apocalypse. Personal hells are, in my opinion, objectively worse than shared hells. At least you have people to scream with :'(
My favourite this is when the entity is described as “every word ever spoken by AM in “I have no mouth and I must scream” as this man’s been through hell and back throughout time and reality.
I relate to this as someone who has written things before. I know the pain of writer’s block, and how it can affect a writer. The way that the author portrayed it in this SCP is fantastic.
I started watching this channel 1 hour ago and while watching videos, asked myself if you had done a video on SCP-3999....and found that you hadn't- so I continued watching your other videos. Then suddenly I see your newest upload.
A testament to the human will, we are flawed simple creatures, and our wills can be brittle as graphite, or as strong and dense as something truly unbreakable.
I think it deserves to be a mainlister just because of how good it is, but I don't think it was ever meant to be a picturable or describable SCP, but just a way for the writer to say he'd be taking a break
But this is the case with many SCPs. People don't realise it but the SCP file format is vwry restrictive and once anyone decides to go a little too far with twisting it, everyone comes to say that it should be a tale. Take 3999, 4010, or S. D. Locke's 001 as examples.
Utylike when day breaks should be a tale, the others are okay, I am thinking about writing a proper file for when day breaks but I am unsure if I should
7:28 - "Talloran attempts to define 3999 as something besides a reality bender, proclaiming it to be things such as *Mike Pence,* several moldy blankets, SCP-055..." Gotta admit, I LOLed at that one. 😝 Mad props to Talloran for powering through _3 MILLION YEARS_ of continuous torture through sheer force of will!
It's the author himself working himself up to a sadistic hatred of his character through writers block and burnout until tjose same tjings make his work be his own downfall as he crumbles beneath his self imposed stress, ending both his involvment in the universe and his character's story.
Really glad this one exists even though I didn't understand the point until this video, it's so different and raw I just gotta respect that - plus the imagery it's inspired is amazing
If I was a reality bender il just live my life and enjoy it. I'll never understand the need to do harm to others if they never did any thing to you or others....
Because when youre an immortal god entity with limitless power and life .... i would imagine you get pretty fuckin bored ... after you have dined on the finest cuisine's, drank from the tallest chalice and fucked everything on 2 legs ..... just like any drug ... you start going down other rabbit holes that seemed horrific at first.... but through the passage of time .... a little tweak in your view of morality, maybe start seeing other humans as less than you..... all the sudden those horrific things start seeming a little more... interesting....... i mean nobody takes a hydrocodone and says ... yup in 5 years im gonna be a full blown heroin addict with a nack for armed robbery ... shit just kinda happens and eventually youre like...wellp.. Guess this is my life now *shrug* hippity hoppity and youre in a full blown monkey suit with a strapon on your forehead covered in leather and spandex swinging from the ceiling fan...... okay.... even "I" lost me towards the end .... but you get the idea.

This and ‘Portraits of Your Father’ are heartbreaking considering the character involved, James Talloran. He’s a side character in the latter but when you consider his body laying dead at the bottom of the containment cell, it’s really tragic.
When I read this SCP the first time on the Wiki, I thought that "Meta Angle" as you put it was the actual author writing about himself and an experience in real life (which it could be). But here's another Theory... What if the author writing about the Sleep-Paralysis with Talloran was ACTUALLY Scp-3999 explaining its natural thought process of absurd-sadistic reality warping creativity and describing specifically how Researcher Talloran neutralized him/her/it?...
Gotta break your theory, but the author explicitly states it is about him and his feelings as he fell into a spiral when writing for the SCP community, as well as what he went through.
A Slutty 9S Unit no no I think there’s some felicity to this theory. Think about it, the torment of the cycle Talloran ended after this dream because the author finally wrote it down and stop adding onto it and stop changing it. This whole article can be seen as a metaphor for a person who becomes obsessed with a concept or idea, but can never put it into words and so would forever changes and shifts and you have to put the same characters from countless different types of horrors, until you find just the right one, except there is someone getting hurt by this. The character is completely aware of this.
@@violetpencil9614 Which is precisely the point. The story is meant as in introspection of the author's self as he continuously tries to write the perfect SCP article over and over again. He's (was) well known around the SCP site for writing a lot of quality articles. But he became too obsessed and it ate away at him. Sure, the theory is obviously felicitous, but that's because it's taking what the author meant and applying it elsewhere. The entire backbone of the article is that but as a sort of expose of his own mental state when writing the article. The author _LITERALLY_ wrote that this SCP was about him in the discussion page of the article. That's all there is to it. Which is even why it was the last article he wrote seriously.
This is also why the concept of Hell doesn't work. Humans can and will adapt to any situation, it actually only takes a couple of weeks of constant exposure. Eternal torture sounds scary but you'd just get used to it. It's pointless.
I really appreciate the work that goes into these videos! It's such a neat format for SCPs to be shared over. They're like... SCP biographies! I love it!
1867 is a pretty awesome SCP! I had always thought that Blackwood had somehow been transferred into the body of a sea slug, but could you imagine if he had been a sea slug the entire time? Taking part in the Second Opium War, scaling the Himalayas, or exploring the Congo? Visualizing that is just so hilarious to me!
I think that adds to the article. Talloran doesn't call it out on its cruelty, after all, but on its stupidity. Having 3999 gruesomely raping and murdering Talloran's sister to then revive her and take her on a date to an ice cream parlor is one of my favorite parts, as is "All researchers are to hate SCP-3999 and love other SCP-3999s."
Part of the charm is that 3999 is also editing the file, which is why it seems so silly, because he’s mocking Talloran who is desperately trying to keep detailed notes on what this thing is and how to kill it
If SCP-035 gained control of Talarin he would thus also control SCP-3999(Lord Stonefish) crossing the 4th Wall like he always wanted entering our world

I saw a theory about 3999 on reddit that says that tallorin actually is 3999, but cannot control his own power and tortures himself because he cant stop it and the cycle breaks when he realised that he was 3999 and ended it all. I cant find the thread rn but if I find it I'll link it in a reply. My personal theory is that Tallorin is the human form of 3999, or an "off shoot" of it l, and it chooses to torture itself because it simply has nothing else to do and the torture ended because 3999 just got bored of torturing itself.
I am Manifestation. I am the one experiencing and creating. How do you know if you are even truly "real?" Free your minds. Labels, human constructs, all you hold as real question it all.
When I first began reading the article on this SCP I nearly had a stroke
Yeah 3999 is one of my favourite SCP aswell, right next to 3812(A weaker version of it at least what i think it is) and the opposite builder bear(That Medic bear was sad)
Now what i think about 3999 is that.... not just the author can create 3999
Everyone i mean *Everyone and everything* in the universe can create 3999 just by having Imaginations
I can see that, in a way its sorta based off one of the Outer Gods from the HP Lovecraft series. There are some that can bend reality like Yog-Sothoth
This SCP is basically taking the usual "Cosmic horrors, the grand universe and higher beings, being completely uncaring of humanity and everything it does."
then answering the question "What if that higher being DID care about humanity, and specifically focused its attention on one person?"
At least you have people to scream with :'(
Jesus dude, i hope everything is alright.

"This should be a Tale not an SCP"
"tHiS sHoUlD bE a tAlE nOt aN sCp"
I think it deserves to be a mainlister just because of how good it is, but I don't think it was ever meant to be a picturable or describable SCP, but just a way for the writer to say he'd be taking a break
But this is the case with many SCPs. People don't realise it but the SCP file format is vwry restrictive and once anyone decides to go a little too far with twisting it, everyone comes to say that it should be a tale.
Take 3999, 4010, or S. D. Locke's 001 as examples.
Utylike when day breaks should be a tale, the others are okay, I am thinking about writing a proper file for when day breaks but I am unsure if I should
Cool concept but no one will take it. It will loose the good parts because the format is restraining.
Why not both?

"Do you think we're being too meta?" -- Morty
SCP-3999 is showing us puppies and kittens through perspective wrapping.
He's tougher than Jesus if he really survived being tortured for millions of years before sacrificing himself to save the world.

When you said the phrase “Gary Gigax’s kidney” I stopped being able to take this seriously.
It's some pretty bad writing overall.
