🇫🇷 Marmots in the Alps - Parc National Des Écrins, France | French Wildlife | Nathalie’s World
In this video you will see breathtaking Alpine landscapes together with some wildlife and many marmots - all in Parc national des Écrins in France.
The national park was founded in 1973, becoming the fifth national park in France. Today it attracts up to 800,000 tourists annually. The park has been awarded the European Diploma of Protected Areas.
The park has more than a hundred peaks above 300 meters and about forty glaciers with a total area of 17,000 hectares. Three peaks have a height of over 4000 meters above sea level.
Marmots are in fact large ground squirrels. Marmots are the heaviest members of the squirrel family. They are burrowing rodents, so they can be found in burrows on rocky mountain slopes and hillsides.
It's very hard to spot them! Because adult marmots are always on guard and at the slightest danger they give a signal to their relatives with a typical shrill squeak. They are very alert and have excellent hearing. And in case of any danger, they immediately hide in their burrows.
Marmots spend most of their time underground, but when they leave their burrows, they play and eat a lot! They mainly feed on grasses and herbs. For winter months they build branched tunnels with escape tubes and then hibernate in their burrows for seven to nine months.
You will get to see what the terrain and pathways are like during my hike, so you can get an idea of what to expect. I got to see many amazing small creatures too, such as a colorful spider which was like a cross between a lady bird and a spider. I will also show you different flowers and plants, and let you know what they are called and a few facts about each. We live in a world full of so much natural beauty and every country unlocks something new and we can experience new flowers, plants and animals, that’s why travelling is so important when you get the time.
