How often are you seeing the 4.4 engines having their timing chain guides explode? Was it only that one E53 you worked on in the past? If not, around how many miles does it happen?
Well they will start making noise at cold start, if you keep driving it it will eat into the aluminum part of the guide and eventualy break the chain, also the cheap timing tools is what the problem with the timing over advanced codes, I need to make a video on that too
Nathan's DIY Garage Garage new subscriber here man! Awesome, informative videos. Did you ever make a video on the Cheap Timing Tools? I recently looked at a 2001 740i sport with a P0011 code, over advanced. The guy said he just had an independent shop replace the timing chain guides. However, that code is popping up, and I heard a light knocking / ticking sound on front drivers side of the engine. Does that possibly sound like a tale tell sign of cheap tools used?
The timing chain guides on the 4.4 are very common to go, they used the same engine in early l322 range rovers as well. The problem mostly is that people use cheap oil and long oil change intervals which clogs the oil passages in the guides and causes the plastic to break off. I have done a bunch of these.if the engine was maintained with synthetic oil and normal change intervals, it will survive.
Just know that the 99-01 have timing chain guide issues. Otherwise, they are pretty rock solid. In fact, the 98 motors are the most solid. The 2002+ 4.4L ALL have valve-stem seal problems. It's a headache. Get the earlier models.
it's a lady that stays close to me that has a 2000 in very good condition with low miles it just needs a battery but I heard that these earlier models are crap I want to take a gamble on it but I don't know what do you think
Hey Nathan. I picked up this exact model (2001 X5 4.4L) and then shortly after I came across your video. Great info helped me do a solid inspection. When I drive it, there is a clicking/knocking in the steering while (like you mentioned in the video). I actually feel it while holding the steering wheel. However the steering is really tight. Power steering is way too firm, but fluids are OK. What do you recommend I look into?
Hi Nathan, I have an very nice '06 E46 M3. I have done the bumper to bumper maintenance while car has been in storage this winter except the SMG. Cannot find any info on this maintenance, except to leave alone. No issues yet with 76k miles.
there is no maintenance for the smg. You can probably change the transmission fluid and i'm not sure if the hydraulic fluid in the smg pump needs to be replaced, you can look that up. I have a manual so all i've done is the transmission fluid and clutch/flywheel at 130k.
thank you Nathan after watching your video I was able to negotiate a better price for my x5 will be following you closely as I'm sure I will have problems along the road but once again thank you very much for sharing your experiences and knowledge

Couldn't agree more, sorry I sold mine with 300K on it, never burned or leaked any oil, ran perfect, hardly replaced anything more than basic brakes, suspension and few hoses. Even had the original radiator, expansion tank, wheel bearing hubs, calipers, crazy how reliable that car was, still see it on road today, sure do miss that one.

Picked up the car it has some driveline vibration upon acceleration. It happens at speeds above 20MPH at partial throttle. Great video Nathan. Thank for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Did you do a video on changing the trans fluid on the e39 540i? I watched one on another model (3 series?). I have a new filter, not sure what fluid to use, and have seen mixed messages on exactly how to do the change. Thanks!
Hi! I recently purchased one myself. I am planning on changing the transmission, transfer case, and differential fluid myself. What is the oil specification for these three parts? are they the same? Kindly state what kind of oil (e.g 75w-90) should I use for each part. Thank you
NO! One major repair could cost you $2000! As they get older you can expect similar costs for future repairs! An oil change takes 8 quarts even to do it yourself is not cheap for a young person.

possibly getting an 01 x5 tomorrow with a 4.4 it has 90k miles on it surprisingly it has all 4 door handles and the only issue it has is the exhaust manifold gasket sounds like it has a leak and it may have a bad valve cover gasket or a leaky coolant hose near the front driver side of the engine luckily I did not hear a roaring sound from a cold start but I did not think about listening close for that noise is it very apparent or is it subtle?
I wish I would've seen this video BEFORE buying my Money Pit™. This X5 of mine is crap. Fix one thing and another breaks. It was dirt cheap when I bought it (
I think that really depends on the maintenance, changing your vanos is a lot easier than the alternative in other engines, and Never had a timing chain issue in mine, 275k and still runs like brand new. But then again I do all the maintenance and regularly inspect mine for issues before there is a problem and I can tell you yes 1) yes the maintenance is time consuming so if you are not a mechanic then expect to drop 10k in maintenance as the mechanic legitimately has to put in about 40 hours of work to change all the gaskets ie valve, timing chain cover, upper and lower oil pan, alternator bracket, and transmission pan gaskets which probably should be changed every 120k or every 5-10 years which really isn’t that frequent when you think about it. Also if it leaks, oil or coolant that is not “normal”. It means you have a problem that means you need to have it fixed before it becomes a problem. German engines are made to run “perfect”. Not “oh there is a little sound here or little leak here or this light goes on but it’s okay” no it isn’t okay that means there is a problem that needs to be addressed. But let me tell you my 2004 X5 runs exactly the same as when it was new,, and have never replaced anything other than regular maintenance items. The only other car, besides this one, I have ever owned that never had a mechanical failure was an Acura legend win a 3.2 v-tech engine, now that car was almost maintenance free. Pros-This suv will out perform most SUV’s on and off road( I have taken this x5 up mountains through creek beds and windy muddy dirt roads on hilly ledges where traction is critical and this suv has outperformed most trucks and jeeps I have taken through the same terrain, and with proper maintenance runs like new.Cons- gas mileage is awful, it’s a heavy suv for its size and it really eats gas, The maintenance is very labor intensive which if your a mechanic means several weekends working on your vehicle, if you aren’t a mechanic then A). You better become one fast (This suv will require 1) a hydraulic floor jack, 2) 3 ton plus jack stands (I use 6 ton) jack stands 3) besides standard sockets (a set that has 16mm as you will need that). E torx sockets and torx sockets, 4)an engine support beam.(you will need to either Jack the engine up and hang it from support beam (Harbor freight 100 bucks it’s a little short for x5 but don’t panic it still supports the weight fine) 5) you will need a 1/2 or preferably a 3/4 inch breaker bar, if you can’t find e sockets in 1/2 or 3/4 inch then use a impact wrench extension set that drops from 1/2 o r 3/4 to 3/8. Must be an impact wrench extension as you will snap the others in half trying to take the 6 frame bolts off the sub frame (. I snapped 2 extensions and a 3/8 breaker bar). Also you will need a breaker bar extender which is essentially a long metal pipe. I took the steel pipe off my jack but was a bit too heavy but still worked fine. or be prepared to drop at least $10k, at a reputable BMW mechanic, (warning do not use a mechanic that does not work on bmws as neither of you will be happy...lol) into a vehicle you bought for $5k. Which is actually a bargain considering it was probably $55-80k. New. Anyways my bottom line is if you don’t want to perform heavy labor hour maintenance then don’t buy a bmw. But if you love the performance and don’t mind some long hard work in your garage then absolutely buy this vehicle as it truly drives amazing.

Hey Nathan, fellow e53 and sequoia lover here, got a question: on one of my e53s (facelifted/late years), I'm having intermittent AC issues, it's a 3.0 though not a v8, could this be related to the AC condenser fan not working? The AC works fine after running a while/driving it, but on startup at times it appears that the system won't kick on the compressor until driven a bit. It seems like the compressor and refrig levels are fine bc once it gets on it is ice cold. Only things I can think of are relay or climate control CPU, the fan is bad, or low freon or bad pressure switch...seems like the fan might be the number 1 culprit even on a 3.0/m54, is this right??? Thx!
Nathan's DIY Garage thanks!! I'll put my gauge in it and double check when the ambient temp is better/higher (last checked when it was cold outside so prob couldn't get a good read. BTW, what BMW scan program do you use/recommend that is 40-50 bucks (like u mentioned in this vid)? I have INPA/EDIABAS but it is a pain and every time I update windows on the laptops it is on it needs fully reinstalled.
I just recently got an x5. The ac doesn’t work. The ac clutch engages. Nothing happens. What could this be a sign of? All pressures are fine in the ac system.

first unhook the battery and touch the cables together to reset , if that does not work check the fluid level, if that dont work replace the solenoids in the trans, they are common for doing that in the gm trans which your x5 has
Window regulators and door carriers suck! I've had to replace three door carriers and two window regulators on mine. Luckily for TH-cam I was able to do it myself. BMW wanted $700 to replace door carrier, and 800 for window regulators and new motor. Door carrier was $57 online and window regulators with new motor included was $47. Saved myself almost $4000 after taxes. Fuck BMW! Oil leaks are increasingly common. Mine has an internal oil leak that BMW wants $4000 to fix it. The rear pinion seal is another common part that breaks down quickly. For a cool $1200 BMW will fix that too. Interior fabric has poor quality glue, in hotter climates fabric falls off. Brakes are just that, they brake, you will be replacing brakes quickly and often. Do not buy this car!!
Door handles and regulators, once you know how to remove door panel, actually are easy! Yes, frustrating at times, but I'm a girl and have done them just fine myself. Just watch one of these DIY vids, and only pay for the parts. And for door handle carriers, get the BMW brand, and save yourself a freak out!
how about don't buy a series one e53 like this, buy a series two E53 2004-2006. far better car and lot more improvements and problems were fixed. more reliable,if they have had wiring mods running across the engine like this one looks and this rough under the bonnet/ hood. RUN
fknows1 I know you said this five months ago, but I have a question. Is there really a big difference between the first and second gen models like you mentioned?
Nathan, I have a transmission problem with my BMW X5 (e53 4.4 2001). After I drive it for around 15-20 minutes it gets in a "transmission failsafe mode" and it doesn't change gears smoothly, I have to rev it in around 6 thousand revvs in order to shift up. I have taken it in authorised mechanics, they have tried everything and I still have this problem since 2016. I have also fixed the ABS and DTC wires, so this isn't the problem. What should I check???
Change the fluid and filter, next would be change the solenoids, that isn't cheap on the zf trans, the problems come from not changing the fluid on the regular basis
Nathan thank you for answering my question!!! I'll get it tomorrow to my mechanic to check the solenoids, but I forgot to tell you that it also has a problem when switching from drive to reverse and also the radio sometimes shuts off unexpectedly, so I'm thinking if the problem (swithching gears in 6000 thousand rpms) may also be caused by the alternator and the wrong battery voltage. What dou you think? Does it play a role??
Anastasis Rekk I had the same problem with mines turns out it was an aftermarket radio that was causing the issue took the radio out never did it again I'm thinking its a voltage problem
What it make you an expert? Are you a BMW tech or just because you do it in your house you think you know ? And for the people that buy BMW or European cars to pretend they have money dont do it because actually they can afford it

I have done a bunch of these.if the engine was maintained with synthetic oil and normal change intervals, it will survive.
i wish Nathan was living closer.
Replaced all 4 o2 sensors on the 4.4L model and still get a pre cat o2 sensor swapped code! Thoughts?
Just know that the 99-01 have timing chain guide issues. Otherwise, they are pretty rock solid. In fact, the 98 motors are the most solid. The 2002+ 4.4L ALL have valve-stem seal problems. It's a headache. Get the earlier models.
it's a lady that stays close to me that has a 2000 in very good condition with low miles it just needs a battery but I heard that these earlier models are crap I want to take a gamble on it but I don't know what do you think
Twon
Stay away! Unless it has had a-lot of quality repairs in its life it probably needs way more work than it will ever be worth!
@@jhackett9352 thanks
C Blanchet it could need control arms, if the pump is not working the pump
Shaft could be broken, hard to say really
Nathan,
Thanks for your posts to the BMW community. Nice videos and thanks for you time in making the videos
Hi Nathan,
I have an very nice '06 E46 M3.
SMG is just an automated manual. Change the gear oil. You can change the SMG hydraulic fluid when the pump dies.
I would only buy the 3.0td best engine ever can do 350 k no problems WITH SERVICE HISTORY
Lmao 350k... Theyll do 600k with no major problems
thank you Nathan after watching your video I was able to negotiate a better price for my x5 will be following you closely as I'm sure I will have problems along the road but once again thank you very much for sharing your experiences and knowledge
Buy something new with a warranty?! Pffft spent 3000 canadian on my e39. These vehicles are definitely worth a few weekends in the garage and a grand in parts.
M Sullivan, What Year & Engine was on your X5 ?
yes this is important to know, i'm looking for a 2001 x5 4.4 but theres no information about the year of this x5 i nthe video ! @@giovannibonanno5655

Hey Nathan, keep the great videos coming! I just picked up an X5 with N62. More videos on that coming soon *so. much. fun.*
Sounds good , can't wait for the videos
Picked up the car it has some driveline vibration upon acceleration. It happens at speeds above 20MPH at partial throttle. Felt almost like a misfire at first, but is definitely vibration from the driveline. I'm thinking it could be the transfer case or something. Transmission shifts without issue. It's a 2004 4.4i X5. Any experience with this?
Prob the drive shaft, check the guibo and carrier , also a lot of guys have issues with the u-joints , more than likely the carrier bearing
Great video Nathan. Thank for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Did you do a video on changing the trans fluid on the e39 540i? I watched one on another model (3 series?). I have a new filter, not sure what fluid to use, and have seen mixed messages on exactly how to do the change. Thanks!
Useful video. Mine is great but it has a strange vibration at 60-70mph. Had new tyres, balancing but its not resolved. Any ideas?
My X5 4.4 2003 transmission has failed it works until it warms up and I don’t know if I could get away with a flush
Hi! I recently purchased one myself. I am planning on changing the transmission, transfer case, and differential fluid myself. What is the oil specification for these three parts? are they the same? Kindly state what kind of oil (e.g 75w-90) should I use for each part. Thank you
im 16 and thinking about getting this as a first car because they’re cheap, is that a good idea?
NO! One major repair could cost you $2000! As they get older you can expect similar costs for future repairs! An oil change takes 8 quarts even to do it yourself is not cheap for a young person.
Hello Nathan, thanks for your video.
Do you have a link for front suspension refreshing kit as well? any brands would recommend?
I've seen some kit for just over $100 but not sure about the quality.
Regards,
Fernando
Does a lot of this apply to the 4.8is as well? Cheers
Hi Nathan, thanks for the video! You mentioned to check for oil leaking down the front of the engine. What usually causes this?
Rolling LTL leaks from the valve cover gasket, CCV system, and/or oil filter housing gasket
Thanks buddy, very informative, I just subscribed, and sent a link to my mechanic.
The N62 is a pos. Stay away from it and go for a M62 if you have to have a V8, otherwise you’re better to go with the straight 6.
What would cause the transmission to slip only under load in reverse
Great info, thanks!
possibly getting an 01 x5 tomorrow with a 4.4 it has 90k miles on it surprisingly it has all 4 door handles and the only issue it has is the exhaust manifold gasket sounds like it has a leak and it may have a bad valve cover gasket or a leaky coolant hose near the front driver side of the engine luckily I did not hear a roaring sound from a cold start but I did not think about listening close for that noise is it very apparent or is it subtle?
Possibly getting a 01 4.4 with 102k crazy

Do you recommend a 3.0 or will it still be plagued with issue
Thanks for the best info
These engine suffer from vanoss and timing chain problems all the time especially on a higher mileage car that's why they're so cheap
Oh makes sense cause I found a super clean 2009 for 2500$
I think that really depends on the maintenance, changing your vanos is a lot easier than the alternative in other engines, and Never had a timing chain issue in mine, 275k and still runs like brand new.
But if you love the performance and don’t mind some long hard work in your garage then absolutely buy this vehicle as it truly drives amazing.
is this the same 4.4 in 645 205 and 04 if so im not touching it is the 650 with 4.8 anybetter help , like 6 series but if there a constant in the shop not to sure i do my own work but notwanting the take it in to get reprogrammed or rescammed

Thx!
I would say freon level is incorrect or even too high
Nathan's DIY Garage thanks!! I'll put my gauge in it and double check when the ambient temp is better/higher (last checked when it was cold outside so prob couldn't get a good read. BTW, what BMW scan program do you use/recommend that is 40-50 bucks (like u mentioned in this vid)? I have INPA/EDIABAS but it is a pain and every time I update windows on the laptops it is on it needs fully reinstalled.

Jonathan Wilfred Michelin no, worth $800 max
How does one manage to let an engine bay get that dirty?
Damn my dad owns one of these its kinda silver but runs fine
Amazing..on such an expensive car, the door handles are so cheaply made-weird. Why so much plastic?
Lol had my X5 for 2 years and have put 3 handles on the drivers side (finally held in with a screw in the plastic end thing that is sup to key into the hole in carrier, b/c it kept pulling out, never broke since either!) and one on passenger side and now my rear needs one! Yes, door handles are crap on this car! I def. expected more from a BMW after having crappy cars my whole life (and never one broken door handle ever!)

What rims are on the thumbnail??

Me too! Changed out 3 windows regulators
Plus door mech on passenger side
Door handles and regulators, once you know how to remove door panel, actually are easy! Yes, frustrating at times, but I'm a girl and have done them just fine myself. Just watch one of these DIY vids, and only pay for the parts. And for door handle carriers, get the BMW brand, and save yourself a freak out!
