In Matthew Kelly’s book, Resisting Happiness, he told the story of how his brother’s all complained about going to church every week. “Their Dad said they didn’t have to go to church, but if they could tell him one thing they planned on doing in the hour that the family was at church, that was more important than thanking God for another day of life, they didn’t have to go. Then he finished up with saying, while you think about an answer, go get ready for church.” This had our bible study group laughing so hard and we used it on our kids.

I used to visit my mom's country, Mexico, the whole summer when I was a teen. Realized that on Sunday, EVERY STORE was closed. Coming from California, I could just about go anywhere after mass. So I had to either get things done on Saturday or wait until Monday -therefore, there was no such thing as "after mass donuts" in Mexico. Which hits different if you have donuts any other day if the week 😑. BUT on Sunday, every teen, parents, elderly and all the ages inbetween, gather in the front of the church just to socialize, but I love how it's in front of the church because it feels like we're inviting Jesus, Mary, and all the saints to our gathering. The elderly sit in benches to catch up with neighbors and friends, the small children play bored games, marbles and hop skotch/jump rope, and teens walk around the huge water fountain with their groups of friends (like ants walk around in a big group, the best I can describe it lol)
But it's a simply living but also know how to DO the Sunday rest, the right way.

It took me a while to understand that working professionally (ie, for money) on Sundays is a sin against the third commandment. As soon as I came to know that I went to confession and never did that again.
It is sad that, given the times we live in, many people think it is an exaggeration to consider working on Sunday a mortal sin.
But on the final day, they will wish they never worked on a Sunday. Ever.

We used to have all stores closed on Sundays by law, but with various faiths that don't go to church every Sunday, businesses could make more money being open on Sundays so they changed the law.

I'm a nurse. Our hospice schedule requires us to work every other Sunday😢. Due to the fact, that it's never a given where I'll end up, I'm doing a lot of "church tourism" attending Mass in different towns. Now I know where the Mass would be packed with young families, where the priest has the tendency to lull me into sleep ( I work nights, so staying up sometimes is a challenge!), and where pews are almost empty. You know what's interesting? Churches with a Tabernaculum at the main altar are the best! Filled with young families, Mass is celebrated with a reverence, not much of noisy band music nor choir giving a performance with their backs to Tabernaculum. I've also found two places with Latin Mass. I love it!
Still, I would prefer not to work on Sundays.

I remember being in high school and going to a full weekend soccer tournament. A few players went to church together, we had the coach coordinated with the leaders of tournament to make sure we would have a time to go to mass. My former spouse was not a good role model or spiritual leader. I took all four of our children every Sunday, alone, for as long as I could. I taught them the faith, I took them for religious instruction and I got two degrees in theology. I'm well-formed so that I can answer their questions. Today, only one attends and infrequently. I love 7:00 a.m. Mass. It is quiet and reverent. I actually have a clear head early in the morning which helps me receive better than in any other time. I also have the whole day free with the joy of the Lord more present than any other day. I also have this feeling for more hours than if I go in the middle of the day. People should not be made to feel guilty for the time or Day of the weekend at which they go to Mass. Also, alluding to Mass not counting unless you go for the absolute right reason is beyond a reach.

I parked in front of the church put the kick stand down , when i started to get off the Harley when it decided to fall the spring on the kick stand came off some time before .Well it landed on my left leg broke my left leg ankle foot and 3 toes. I saw a man coming toward me i asked if he was going to church , he said yes. I explained the bike had landed on my leg and I couldn't stand on my foot. I then asked would you mind helping me into church so i can attend mass. He said I'm a paramedic if you cant stand on that foot you need to call a ambulance. I was like oh ok i guess. I went to the hospital a week or two later I came to mass in a splint. i eventually was able to ride my scooter to church . my point is it didn't bother me being in pain because I could only Imagen the pain Jesus endured and my leg could wait. But for me - I need to b fully involved. So even though I have a Catholic Church just 5 buildings away from my home, I go to a tiny church that is (always closed because our priests r 'too busy'!!) approximately 10 km away and an expensive ride away! I go and pray outside the (closed) church.

Hi Guys I love the show (I'm sure you get that a lot) 😅. It teaches us a lot about our faith and thus provides simplified explanations to very complex spiritual matters. I have watched numerous episodes and never took the time to type out a message of appreciation for the great work you guys do. The fact that you reach out to someone like me who lives in Botswana speaks volumes of your international footprint. It probably speaks more about the beauty of the internet but that's a story for another day. Okay enough compliments before Fr Rich starts crying 🤣Where can I find the show notes from the various episodes? I would like to check out some of the authors you refer to & scripture as well. I looked through your website & I couldn't find them maybe my computer skills are lacking 😂

you will soooo be happy and less depressed.... be prepared because the evil one -- who is used to you NOT GOING to Mass -- will NOT be happy you are suddenly returning to Mass. The evil one will do anything to stop you - be prepared. put on your armor of Christ. Say your prayers daily as they will PAVE your way to Mass without any distraction, obstruction and confusion. So happy for you. God Bless You!!! PS-just like any other human you might feel inspired and pumped up the first few days for daily prayer but then when mass draws near or anything else where you are meeting God, you might feel a pull to withdraw and "chicken out". --Don't chicken out--. Keep up your prayer and be strong in your faith. Enter the miracle! So happy for you! AND ME TOO! let's all stay strong in God's will and not our own!

Right?! And PLEASE do not accept our Lord’s own Body and Blood from who is referred to as an “Extraordinary (Eucharistic) Minister! Only the clergy (and deacons) have annointed hands from which they can place the Host on your tongue, whilst we are preferably but not always possibly kneeling! I beg of you dear people to not disrespect our Lord in this way! Yes, I realize the pope does it. Need I say more, really?

My wife threatens me with divorce after I return home after going to mass on Sundays. I should be jumping for joy, and filled joy by this reaction but its difficult when a family is split. I have given up any attempt to convert my family . But I have tried to show love by my prayer life -praying the rosary ( thanks to my parish priest, Fr Stephen Woolley at St Joseph's RCChurch, Sale, Manchester , UK for recommending praying a rosary when driving the car) and trying to be practical even though I am utterly useless at DIY.

My friend decided to check out the Catholic faith. Not the Roman Catholic, but the Orthodox Catholic. He was revered Independence Baptist. He is struggling with understanding the relationship we have with Mary and things that aren’t in scriptures or scriptures based. Some things I can help him with based on my Roman Catholic upbringing (cradle Catholic), but things I can’t, for example their extreme fasting practices during Lent and other times of the year where they don’t eat for 75 hours, don’t eat fish, meat, poultry, dairy, oil, wine, eggs, etc. Meat and poultry I can explain to him, but other Orthodox practices I can’t. I just keep praying for him and light candles for him. How can I help him understand the teachings of the Faith? And could you please keep him in your prayers.

Attending a Catholic Mass is like being invited to The Last Supper with Jesus and His apostles. During The Consecration, God opens Heaven and gives Himself to us. Receiving Holy Communion is the most beautiful, powerful and intimate union we can have with God on earth. The only place on earth The Transubstantiation occurs is in a Catholic Mass. Receiving Holy Communion nourishes and strengthens us. Jesus said unless we eat of His Body and drink His Blood In Holy Communion, we will have no life in us. We would never enter Heaven. Jn 6:51-59

If God didn't need us, as I think He does, weekly Mass and worship would not be required of us. But, we all need God more as a spiritual exercise as Fr. Rich points out. What is due to God is our love, gratitude and devotion as He commands it. God decides what His form of worship is to be. He did in the OT and He does in the NT. Separating yourself from the celebration of the Eucharist is detaching from God.

I haven't found a church home where I now live and it made my heart sad to drive by so many churches (Catholic and Protestant) on Easter Sunday with empty parking lots. Seems like everyone gathered for an hour in the morning and then moved on from celebrating Our Lord's resurrection. Surely celebrating our Savior is a joy, not an obligation. Perhaps I am being judgmental because I long and am jealous of the fellowship of the saints. Perhaps they were spending time celebrating with their families - and Christ would love that - so perhaps that is even better.

From my experience going to church most priests don't go into the why, don't explain things to the people but rather just regurgitate generic talking points or can't wait for the mass to be over.
Some just accept things like going to mass because that's what they were told to do as kids never really learning why.
People are hungry for knowledge and want the closeness to God but if the clergy aren't guiding them then TV or internet will guide them.
