She's (Kona) looking slick now Mitch /Lori, wood work looking fabulous too, well done Lori
Lori said thank you! 🤗Thanks for stopping by!
Getting there! Getting that motor in was a HUGE STEP! Congrats!
Oh ya! Thank you!
I'm so addicted to this series. Can't wait for the final result. Great work Mitch. Hurry and pump out the rest of the videos😅!
Mahalo! 😄 Stoked you are enjoying the series!
I love all of the detailed and precision duplication of the front seat corner radius that was preformed utilizing CAD! (cardboard assisted design)
BTW, my old bus looked very much like Kona in its original configuration, all the way down to the colors. After it’s engine gave up the ghost, and it was sitting on cinderblocks at my farm, west of Krum Texas, my oldest daughter, who was seven at the time would make a picnic lunch for herself and her two younger brothers, 5 & 3. Then off they went on imaginary road trips to far away places. Italy was a favorite destination.
One day a random guy came to the door and offered to by the bus. It was straight, no major damage except a cooked engine. I was flabbergasted at the price, so much so that I didn’t haggle at all, just dug up the title and handed it over for $2K! That went a long way for a single dad of 3 in the mid 80’s.
Anyway, y’all are doing an absolutely stunning restoration and rebuild. I’m more than blown away by the detail.
Keep it up, and happy motoring about in beautiful Kona!
Thanks Bart! Wow what a story!! Aw wish you didn't sell the bus and get it back on the road 😅 Thanks for stopping by! See you in next episode!
We had one too. 1971 wesfalia VW brand new. Abandoned it around year 1982, in the Upper Michigan
Wow!! Wondering where it is now 🧐
Making good progress! Hopefully you will meet your 3 week deadline! Looking forward to the next episode!
Thanks Rick! 3 weeks stressful 😆👍🏼
When I was a kid, I used to hunt for jumping spiders. I kept one for a week, I was very curious about them, and then I let them go and look for another one.
We also have one similar but with a hard shell like abdomen with horns on there said in black and white colors. Sometimes you could find one with a skull design on top of the abdomen or other types of pretty images.😊
Awesome progress. Never heard someone say . They didn’t want to run the electric on Sunday. At any rate a lot got done. Love the progress. Bring on 72
Right? Only people that don't like progress I guess.. haha
Hellow fro Brazil Mic. I really love what you and Lory are making with KONA . The VW never thinked nothing like this !
Hola Jose! Thank you so much!
A jumping spider! Salticidae! My favorites!
me too!
Coming on very nice mich. hoping you get it all finish in 3 weeks. Paint colour perfect
Thank you ! 🙌
Sweet!! It’s really coming together! I can’t wait.
You and me both!
Looking great all in almost ready ❤🤙
So close!
Hello from France Mic. I was surprised to see that you did not put thread lock on the screws that hold your tank, or counter nuts on each side of the connecting nut between the two threaded rods. In case of vibrations it will probably unscrew if you leave it like that. Bravo for your work on Kona and on video. Good luck
Aloha! Thank you for the comment! I will fix that to be better! 🙏🏼 Thanks for stopping by!
Looks like you're having a great time creating !
totally! 😄
Looking Awesome!! Getting closer !!
Superb job Mitch, nice to see the motor gone in too, and Lori, if you fancy painting my house, your welcome anytime xx
Thank you! Really nice to see motor in it, so awesome! Haha! I will let Lori know ;-)
A interesting and fun vid.
Thanks Mitch 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it🤙🏼
Can’t wait till the initial first start up of this beast ! ITS ALIVE !!!!
Looking forward to that moment!!
Like the scene in Young Frankenstein LOL@@MicBergsma
My mind is always blown when I stop to think about how you will have the most complete knowledge of every single part and surface of the bus. I hope when you reveal it when it is finished that we get a thorough look at all the little details. Love it
Oh ya for sure! You know I love the details! :) Have a great week Pete!
@@MicBergsma I do but I have never been a scooter person. I do credit/blame (haha) you for so many things I bought because of reviews you did of the stuff! For a few things, you completely changed my mind and made me want to buy them! Cheers mate
So close to hearing the engine start and get some heat in the pipes. Looking forward to seeing the interior going in.
Yeah!!!
Hey Mitch, loved this series, sometime to far apart! But loved it none the less. I know it has been a long time, (way longer than you probably could have imagined), but it looks great. Can't wait till the finish. hope to meet you some day.
Great Stuff. Getting up early morning for work and wow still enjoying watching your Videos. I will let my Deaf Clients know about your Kona Bus in UK. Great to see the Engine in your Kona. Keep up the Good Work. Can’t wait for the next episode. Take care. Markieuk.
Ah that's awesome! Thanks for stopping by! ☺
I like your work at KONA
Another brilliant video ❤️ watching you and Lori 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mahalo! Thanks for stopping by!

i just scheduled my dog to be put down friday. this was a welcomed distraction to the sadness of it all. so thanks
Oh no, I'm so sorry! 😢 Losing a loved pet is so hard. Happy could help distract
Hi im from mexico you are my inspiration...i have one combi 1989 in process👍🤠
Hola! Sweet 😄🙌🏼 Keep it up!!
@@MicBergsma your combi(bus) Konan its amazing👍🤠
Hi Mic. Hope you are all doing well. Great video as usual. Kona is really coming together now. Could I give a shout out to one of my friends over here in England. His name is Max Edwards and owns Eva resto. He's done some really rad beetles, buses, Karen this etc. An ex student of mine, he also makes narrowed beams with built in air ride. Carry on the good work.
Thank you Martin! That's very cool!!
Hi Lori & Mich,
I’m really impressed how much your technical skills have improved since you started the project! I follow the TH-cam series since episode 9 or 10 (and of course watched them all).
Greetings from Hannover (Germany) where Kona was born (just five years after me 😉)
Carsten
Thanks for coming on the journey with us Carsten!
Sorry hello from England north west Liverpool 👍🏻😁
Aloha from over the sea 😄🤙🏼
AWESOME !!! Its coming along GOOD !!! Cant wait to see it finished .. and to near that engine PURR !!!
🤩🎉
Hola , en hora buena ya casi finalizas tu proyecto. Exitos 😃🇻🇪😮
Aloha, muchas gracias, estoy muy emocionado de poder hacerlo pronto, ¡gracias por el comentario!
Them fuel lines.. ⛽
🔥 fire 🔥
You better invest in a "blase" fire supression system for the engine bay !
Oh yeah planning to!
@@MicBergsma
The fuel lines you showed in the video are going to explode.
You need a special type for air cooled fuel injection VWs due to the engine compartment temperatures.
The special line has a solid stiff tube core wrapped in reinforced rubber sleeve and followed with a cloth braid insulation. Without the cloth outter cover, the engine temps rapidly age the non-treated lines where they prematurely fail causing a catastrophic fire.
Im sure Skinner must have warned you ! Ive tried lines specially for FI, lines with a outter stainless metal braided sleve, but only the cloth insulated safely lasted.
Im sure by now the bus is finished with upholstery and is back in Hawaii. I strongly encourage you to swap out that line.
@@KA4UPW interesting, thanks for all the information… nope Skinner never said anything about it ,
can you send me the link for the hose?
@@KA4UPW this is the one I have www.ebay.com/itm/323427616243
@@MicBergsma
That looks like good stuff, just missing the outter insulation layer.
Ill look for a link. We have a specialty shop in the area maybe you can call them 😉
Ill look up the info.
Truly impressed with this build just keeps getting better and better I wish it didn’t have to end but as thay say all good things must come to a end we can just look forward to the next chapter
Thank you Bryan! Can't wait to show more 🤙🏼
Love it buddy all the hard work paying off I’m sure the van is done by now can’t wait to see the rest of the videos
Thanks 👍
MERRY CHRISTMAS Mitch! Kona is look GREAT.
Happy Holidays to you and thank you!

Very good job
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent update!
Mahalo Charles!
Dom seems like a lovely guy.
You mean DoUG? Dom the paint guy is not that lovely 😂
@@MicBergsma Oh. Sorry. That was sarcasm.
Yes! New video 🎉
Hello. Aloha. As a decorator I was concerned as to what you were using to stain the wood? Was that oil based or water based ? Really should not use oil based. What did you use? 💙
Hi! We used water based 👍🏼
You both are doing an Amazing job can't wait to see it finished you compliment each other so well hope you both have a Wonderful Xmas and New Year's David Newcastle Australia 🦘
Thank you mate! You too!! 🐬
Superb big guy. I would be putting air bags on the outside of the bus incase anybody got to near it
Good idea 👍🏼
Hi Mich & Lori, congratulations on the great progress and the installment of the engine👍🏻👍🏻.Happy Christmas Holidays🎄🎄🇺🇸 Greetings Hubertus☮🇳🇴🇳🇱🎄🇺🇸
Happy holidays!
Engine in! Big step! I bet the Vacaville ACE hardware really misses you. :-)
oh yeah! haha
Hi Mitch, thanks so much for the great series. I'm curious who made the bed frame you're using. Is it a VW part with a number? Is it specific to split window buses? I'd like to make a foldable bed, too.
kali ni sidai tak lama.. bagus mike
Aloha, apa yang tidak akan bertahan lama? 😅
Perfect is the enemy of the good, but so is “not good enough”. My sublime gas tank was a bit of a disappointment. I had to modify the filler neck, and my tank did not include the longer sending unit. Also, I had the same problem with the hold down bolts, which were too short. I used threaded rod. I’m happy with it, though. Bigger engine and carrying more weight means more gas consumption. A bigger tank gets you back up to that 200 miles per fill-up range. It would be great to see a short real-time clip of you using Kona.
Hi Tom! I was wondering if you were still around watching my videos haha. Ahh yes I heard about that issue, will keep that in my mind. Good thing engine have EFI to get better mileage 😉 I hope haha. Yeah I will make video about that. Have a great week! Good to hear from you man!

What another jam packed video Mitch like I say always can’t wait for the next episode love that kona is getting all the lovely new part put bk on going to be such a lovely bus and you can get bk in your own bed finally once your home ❤ all the way from Somerset uk 🇬🇧
Oh ya, can't wait to sleep in my own bed! Glad you are enjoying the episodes, thanks for stopping by
Looks like you had to shoe horn that beast of an engine in the bay 😂
haha, tight fit!
Lol@@MicBergsma
You might want to purchase your nuts and bolts at a nut and bolt store and not at a hardware or box store . I was paying from $7 to $10 dollars each for galvanized carriage bolts depending on their length and after purchasing about 30 of them I found you could buy them at the nut and bolt store for about $1 each ! Ouch . Getting done and lookin marvellous !
Yeah 😆 Stainless steel everything $$. Mahalo!
yeah Mick, use McMaster-Carr, much higher quality at a fraction of the price!
Never heard of that, will check them out, thanks! I just had to go to whatever was around the shop 🥴
@@MicBergsma Almost every medium to large city especially if any industry is around have nut and bolts stores much cheaper than hardware or big box store especially when you have bought dozens and their quality control of the cheap Chinese stuff is actually much better because they sell to industry. So I’d you are buying a 316 stainless bolt that is what you will get not a 101 stainless bolt that will rust. Also if getting any stronger grade bolts say for the suspension or hanging the motor you can get the proper strength grade ! Beware .
@@MicBergsma and the worst part is the SS you are buying and assuming it is 316 is more than likely a lower grade cheaper stainless that will rust. If it is the cheapest stainless try a magnet if it will pick it up it is really the junk and if it is a lower grade it may not be magnetic but will rust.
Hi Mic and Lori, Good to see Kona really coming together now! All that hard graft you've done, and all those hours are paying off! 🙂
Sadly, the link for Sublime Restos doesn't seem to want to work! 😲
Thank you!
Oh no let me know if this link works... sublimeclassicrestorations.bigcartel.com/product/sublime-splitscreen-aluminium-fuel-tank
@@MicBergsmayes, thank you! That one works! :-)
Respekt super.

Pleaseeee tell me ur putting some kind of protective coating on that wood. A stain or wood primer n paint
Yes, it was in the video ;)
Desde Puerto Rico Héctor rosado😮
Hola Hector! ¡Gracias por pasar!
Primer will help but will still let it rust as it has a porous surface you need to use paint to seal it. Look around the shop and you see primed hoods and fenders still get surface rust even though they were primed !
Thanks for the information, I will eye on that... Shop said primer is all what I need to use 😬
@@MicBergsma that is what my uncle who has owned 2 body shops said to me when he seen me and my cousin just primer a hood and leave it outside a long time . He said it will rust and said just look around unless you seal it with paint it will rust .
@@rayboucher479 Good to know, we are planning to put bus in a bubble cover to stay dry and clean but I will eye on everything around the bus 👍🏼
i have a dremmel, should i go there?
Woohoo one of the first viewers :)
🏆
❤❤❤❤
Hi you there…
I saw you put longer bolts to hold the aluminum gas tank, on one of them you put a “ground” cable or connection?
I asked because I think the bolts you used there are Stainless Steel, if thats the case, you can’t use them for ground points cause they’re not electric conductive, if you have a working problem connection with whatever you connected there, that could be problem, a ground on a SS bolt, not a regular metal one…
Best Regards from Puerto Rico, keep the nice work 🎉
At 20:10 I saw paintable silicone caulking used on that throw out bearing clip. Mike F can you weigh in please.
Yes shop told me to do that so clips will hold on to keep from letting throwout bearing fall off while driving. Is it bad? I can message Mike to chime in about it
I would put at least a couple coats of varnish on the plywood if I were you's and do a light sand between coats. cheers.
Good tip, she put 3 coats on them and they will be hidden after upholstery install 😃
I 💙 KOMBI & MIcBERGSMA 💪😎👍💯🇺🇸👋😃

Hello Mic. Nice to greet you from Argentina. I have watched every one of your restoration videos. two comments: 1. They should be able to be translated into Spanish, it's very easy. 2. #70 chapters...I think it's too long. exhausts thank you. Oscar
👍🏼
She is getting pretty tasty! The pipe dope is meant as a lubricant and not a sealant in the fuel tapered threads, you may have given the 90s a turn with a wrench off camera. If you smell gas check there first.
I've kinda concluded that Dom "THINKS" he is a better painter than he actually is.
It’s really nice to see that this is moving forward. your video is from March 2022, I would like to know where you are today in December 2023. I have been following you since the beginning from France 🇨🇵, I myself have a French bus from 1973. continue to make us dream with KONA THE BUS
haha good conclusion!
What happened to Eddy? He should have painted it. Don is purely a lazy person and doesn’t work to well with customers or at his own job.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have great watch you in TH-cam very interest 👌🏻👍🏻 I wish meet you in there look your vw bus. Myself full deaf man I hope will meet you and your wife in them 👍🏻.
Thank you! Can make it happen! Come visit Maui when Kona is ready😄
Put some lock nuts on those gas tank bolts otherwise they will back out and you’ll end up with a rattle tank.
Curious if you considered applying epoxy resin and fiberglass on the plywood? Moisture and mold is your enemy in busses.
Thanks for the tip, I will fix that
Lori already brushed the Polyurethane protection sealant on them. I didn't think about epoxy resin 😆🤦🏼♂️ All wood will not be visible after upholstery install
@@MicBergsma that poly should be fine, especially with that many thick coats.

After 71 what happen my friend 😮I am a motor technician I need to know how to modified a vehicle I learn more things from you .
100th!!!!!! Hey mitch
Whoo! Aloha!
Why use nuts and bolts to hold your aluminum channel for your light strips when you could have used 3 wood screws with countersunk heads as they would be plenty strong for the weight and would have made the heads flush with the aluminum and not had nuts and washers exposed inside your box ?
Right, I should have gone that way
@@MicBergsma yes keeps the inside of box cleaner and keeps the aluminum channel nice and flat so the light strip sticks well . I love your bus and you are doing a great job and work. We can see the end coming soon !
@@rayboucher479 For sure I could change to wood screws to be cleaner 😄 thank you so much Ray!
22:28 Will the line connecting the passenger side rear door (white paint coming too low) with rear side panel also be fixed? 8-D
Man, this is beyond concourse, you'll never drive this jewel on a dusty street, let alone wet street, will you? This bus should go right to a Volkswagen museum when ready.
Yes we want that fixed, it looks horrible 🥴 Nah we will take bus out and drive like a normal car, that's why we went for nice 1776cc motor and EFI kit 😃
