When I was a kid, I thought this was three separate songs. Then I started to wonder why I seemed to hear them together so often. The second 'song' in this gets extra points for using a tuba.

Billy Joel has stated over and over again that of all the songs he has written, this is his favorite.

love this song...and great story telling by Billy Joel. "they started to fight when the money got tight and they just didn't count on the tears..." , wow, what a lyric

Billy Joel is a HUGE fan of the Beatles and they were his inspiration for getting into music.
The Stranger was his breakout album. During the Turnstiles sessions he knew something big was gonna happen soon. Say Goodbye to Hollywood was kind of him seeing the future.
As he was writing for The Stranger, he had three different songs partially written, but couldn’t figure out how to finish them. One of the songs was “Things are OK in Oyster Bay”.
They sat unfinished then he had an epiphany. He channeled his inner McCartney and Lennon and used Golden Slumbers/ Carry That Weight/The End as his model and turned three songs into one.
Fantastic album and another one of my Desert Island records.
Speaking of Turnstiles, check out Angry Young Man. A live recording, especially something more recent, is best. It used to be his opening song but he admitted he can’t do piano work anymore. It’s pretty frantic.

I hope you will react to Billy's "New York State of Mind". Such a different vibe and it's beautiful! Glad that you like this song, it's always been one of my favorites. A movie within a song!

Here is a live video of Billy doing the Scenes of An Italian Restaurant, live from Long Island. Poor guy was jamming so hard on the piano he had to keep shaking his hands to wake them up as they were going numb. Excellent song... of course, Billy is always excellent. Thanks for your reaction. Take care and be well. Peace. th-cam.com/video/hRP1dF7Qlac/w-d-xo.html

And before “Bohemian Rhapsody,” there was “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles. More psychedelic, because it’s of its time in the late 60s, but definitely an inspiration for this song.

Seeing Billy Joel play this is fun. Live From Long Island is a great performance to see. He had an injured hand, which you can tell, but he just kept pounding away at the keys. That whole show, along with Old Grey Whistle Test, are on TH-cam, at least clips of, and they're a great source for seeing Billy and his band in action. They're total showmen, and their playing is so tight. You've probably had some of these recommended: Goodnight Saigon (video or live from Old Grey Whistle), Pressure (video is kind of interesting), Innocent Man, Tell Her About It (fun video), We Didn't Start the Fire (video - - I suggest, for this song, having lyrics handy). That's a pretty good assortment. You're a new reactor for me and I'm really enjoying your reactions. Great stuff. Hope your following continues to grow fast. All the best.

I have to tell you, I wasn't even going to bother suggesting anything because so many people are exposed to Billy Joel via the radio (Uptown Girl, for example). But then I saw you selected this epic multi-part piece (can't even call it a song becasuse it's like three songs stitched together). So all I have to say is bravo. This is a great piece. If you want to hear some virtuosic rapid playing, "Prelude / Angry Young Man." Your head will blow right off your neck when you hear just how good Joel is simply as a piano player. Thanks for doing this one. :)

"That Piano Going"... well , he is called "Piano Man", there must be something to that so it's kinda his thing.

O...M...G...are we lost twins or something? My all time favorite meal is...Rigatoni with a nice red sauce, lots of garlic, sprinkle cheese, and hot Italian Sausage. My grandma always said, "When you put in the garlic, close your eyes, because you can never use too much." 😘👌
