I didn't watch the show yet since premieres in a few days more, but reading the reviews i noticed how EVERYONE was praising the cast, how EVERYONE liked the production design (sets, ambient, VFX), how EVERYONE thinks it captures the anime style. The compains? Focused mostly in how is not the anime, how doesn't "feel" like the anime, how the anime "does it better" and i mean... No shit, the anime is other thing, instead of going to a more grounded approach like many other adaptations the series embraces the campy yet charming style of the anime without hesitation and yet seems to be no space for nothing for most critics i saw. I Will wait to watch the series before giving My veredict however looks to me like the reviews are not being fair with the series since once the supposed initial concerns were adressed in a pretty good manner they still managed to dislike it for other reasons unrelated.
@@kaoko111 "this live-action Bebop has a fun enough crew to spend time with, but it disappointingly replaces the soulfulness of the source material with kitsch." I'm going to watch the show before I judge it but I've seen this sentiment echoed in a lot of the reviews I've read and I'm extremely disappointed. And I was one of the people optimistic for this too! I've read that this is simply a poor adaptation of the show that simply misinterprets what made the original work. I don't consider faithfulness a positive directorial trait, but apparently it doesn't bring anything new to the table either.
@@kaoko111 um what? I just checked metacritic and there are like 2 positive reviews with the rest of them being either mediocre or negative. Most of the 8 negative reviews, which range from a 3.8-1.6/10, had nothing good to say about any of the things, other than the actors, that you are claiming *everyone* is praising. I mean, here's a direct quote from one of the reviews: "The result lacks a color palette, a distinct visual language, and any resemblance of soul. This is just like the Cowboy Bebop you remember (or that your friends told you about), except it is absolutely nothing like it." One critic even called it a bastardization of the original. What you are saying doesn't make sense. If the reviewers are saying (which they mostly aren't) that the sets and ambience is so great and that it also captures the style of the anime then how are they also saying that it doesn't "feel" like the anime?? Those elements are a huge part of what would make the show feel like the anime. Also my god why are you people over here trying to pretend the original was campy when it wasn't? "absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way." that's the definition taken straight from Merriam Webster. Stuff like Wet Hot American Summer, Evil Dead, or the early Batman movies and TV show are camp. Just because the original had some humorous episodes doesn't mean it was campy. That's not even close to what the anime is, but of course you would know that if you actually watched it.

I was going to say I'm disappointed the video didn't preview any new compositions. Everything is a note-perfect rendition of the original. Either my ears aren't sharp enough to spot them, or I'll have to wait until Friday to hear the differences.

@@KevinTaNet I hear it now. The first part about 5:15 is the first mid-8 from the original (about 2 min 05 sec in the original). She is truly a living legend. Her compositions are brilliant. There are shows that I loved because of the music only to find out later that it was her. I have been a fan of her work for more than 25 years.
She's the reason why I'm gonna watch this series. My best anime OSTs have all been by her: Sakamichi no Appollon, Darker than Black and yes, Cowboy Beebop. I ABSOLUTELY love her.
The sole reason to watch this, is the participation of this amazing woman and the ridiculously talented Seatbeltoos. To hear her and them in action one more time with this score. What a time to be alive.
We never asked for this. But I am so glad we got a real-live adaption of Cowboy Bebop. Seeing the amount of passion and resources they're bringing to the table is impressive! They even brought Yoko back onboard!!!! What a time to be alive.
I’m happy she gets the recognition always deserved, Yoko Kanno… and also Joe Hisaishi, Kenji Kawai have absolutely nothing to envy composers like Williams, Goldsmith, or Zimmer. Yoko Kanno is one of the most versatile composer out there, her body of works is amazing.
I've loved Yoko Kanno's brilliant music since childhood and Cowboy Bebop is obviously one of the best soundtracks, and one that I've loved for many years. Don't know how I'm going to feel about the adaptation.. There are some things I'm unhappy about visually. Like the characters' appearance and such... But at least I know the soundtrack would be incredible.
It feels like such an insult when Netflix ask “skip intro” on this show. The music is such a huge part of its appeal. Looking forward to seeing this live action remake. Hope it’s good.
Yoko Kanno is a freaking music goddess… she is amazing, she is great… and she gace life to our beloved cowboy bebop anime and now the amazing adaptation… keeping to the roots and the source material. This show is the best thing that has happened to TV in a long time!

God bless you Yoko. Thank you for sharing your vibrant and touching music with the world. I personally feel like your songs changed my life and I was never the same hearing them
“I love that one, but I’m gonna redo it.” Yes to this. Absolutely yes to this. That’s the spirit of jazz, and that was the spirit of Cowboy Bebop to begin with. A horrible shame that most of those who saw this reboot couldn’t see it the same way: I thought the reboot was absolutely fantastic, but most of those who saw it seem to think it was bad purely on account on deviating from the original. Which is ironic, since the whole spirit of the original anime was to improvise, have fun, and create something new. I’m convinced the near entirety of the hate the reboot is getting is an outgrowth of people simply refusing to understand it.
From what I've seen people are hating it based on snippets that were individually really awful. While it's not exactly fair towards the show as a whole, I think fans were already prepared for it to differ from the original anime (though I haven't seen the new one so I'm not going to cast judgement or anything)
@@woomy8971 There were also a lot of people who didn't watch it through, or colored their opinion so early that they didn't recognize what was happening as the show progressed (especially a lot of the comments I've seen about Julia). This, also kind of ironically, mirrors how a lot of people see Jazz - if you don't take in an entire song/set/album before you pass judgement, sometimes you miss the most beautiful parts of it. Cowboy Bebop's always had an advantage in this department in that it leads with "Tank!" which is easy for anyone to think fondly of, and is why it's actually been an entry point to Jazz for younger audiences.
No, it was bad because it was BAD. See, Yoko is an artist that understands her music and bebop, so when she chose to redo it she did it RIGHT. Everyone else involved in the show didn't have a GD clue, which is why it was a complete mess. Don't drag Yoko into your flawed argument.
Me in 2007: trying to download every scrap of Yoko Kanno /Seatbelts I can find off Limewire, thinking the cartoon will slowly sink into history and her music will never be heard again…. 2021: weeping at her superstardom
Yoko coming in to doing the soundtrack for the live action series was the thing that cemented my viewership. Her music with the Seatbelts is practically the lifeblood of the original series. The story was amazing, but the music brought the series to the pinnacle of greatness that no other anime has yet reached. Cowboy Bebop is the standard in Anime. If the soundtrack to the live action didn’t match to that of the Anime, it wouldn’t have worked at all. I’m glad somebody at Netflix was smart enough to recognize that.
"the music is so ahead of it's time" I think someone will have to explain Bebop to Julia's actress That being said, I'm so glad to see The Seatbelts performing! Hope there's new LPs coming with this adaptation
That's what Y.Kanno and the Sealtbeats deserve! The attention and stage to be able to present your masterpiece to a million audience again! Thanks to Netflix and even if the series doesn't come close to the original I'm just glad that it exists and that I can watch, hear AND feel it again!
I had my hopes before the release because I love the anime. But when I saw the previews and heard the music I sat back and took a big sigh of relief. I knew it would be good...how good I didn't know, but the music is icon and fantastic. So happy to hear it again. Been watching it, and it is so good. True Cowboy Bebop.
I last saw bebop a decade ago but I listen to its soundtrack every so often even today. You can never forget the sound once you watch bebop. I had to search a lot and wait for hours just to download a few of its songs over an infinitely slow dial up. I've since made sure every phone I've had since then had a copy of those songs
The music sounds so bright and fresh. I've always loved Cowboy Bebop's music, which feels like a whole character and environment, and having a new set of performances really shows how true that is. Yoko Kanno's legitimately a genius.
If you’re still on the fence about watching this, trust me: just watch it. It’s excellent stuff; like the music, there are some rearrangements; some things work well, some maybe a bit less so, but the spirit and feel of the original are very much present. I’m looking forward to season 2.
Jazz is so diverse with it's many extensions. I dug the music score. Reminded me of my Maynard Ferguson big band days when all our charts were, "Slam Bam Thank You Ma'am," kick ass.
Her music often becomes so intertwined with the DNA of whatever she's working on that if you tried to resurrect the show without her music at best you'd have a body with little soul, if any at all. As others have noted, if anything the soundtrack is gonna be amazing.
Or escaflowne and wolf rain. Actually wolf rain has one of those rare osts where you can just play the whole album without feeling like skipping anything. At least for me.
For me, Cowboy Bebop is in a class by itself. Love the live Action, the actors for Spike and Jet are just perfect. The music is awesome...Yoko Kanno brings it to life. How much better could it be.

@@kaoko111 "this live-action Bebop has a fun enough crew to spend time with, but it disappointingly replaces the soulfulness of the source material with kitsch."
I'm going to watch the show before I judge it but I've seen this sentiment echoed in a lot of the reviews I've read and I'm extremely disappointed. And I was one of the people optimistic for this too! I've read that this is simply a poor adaptation of the show that simply misinterprets what made the original work. I don't consider faithfulness a positive directorial trait, but apparently it doesn't bring anything new to the table either.
Ehhhhh. It’s easier to feel this way when you didn’t grow up with the show and don’t have that long term emotional connection.
You should give a damn. Maybe if people actually started giving a damn then these production companies would actually put in some effort.
I mean, here's a direct quote from one of the reviews:
"The result lacks a color palette, a distinct visual language, and any resemblance of soul. This is just like the Cowboy Bebop you remember (or that your friends told you about), except it is absolutely nothing like it."
One critic even called it a bastardization of the original.
"absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way."
that's the definition taken straight from Merriam Webster. Stuff like Wet Hot American Summer, Evil Dead, or the early Batman movies and TV show are camp. Just because the original had some humorous episodes doesn't mean it was campy. That's not even close to what the anime is, but of course you would know that if you actually watched it.
Yoko is a powerhouse, watching this who else got the chills when in the background "the real folk blues" showing John Cho in the cockpit, the real folk blues part 2 ep 26 vibes

Yeah, she said Covid hasn't started at all yet (back then).. Netflix seems to always have a problem with subs it seems 🙄
But she said 3 years ago. That was late 2018. Shit hitting the fan was a ways away.
Typical Netflix subs

*Netflix: We're bringing in Yoko Kanno to score the series again.*
Me: So, when does this premiere again?
Hahahaha me too!
Trust me, just buy the soundtrack and spare your eyes.
The shows good in its own way. Takes different routes and elaborates on stuff. They definitely rather explore the characters emotions more than the action it seems like, which is fine.

Ms Yoko Kanno is a genius. She is also behind the enchanting music of the great anime series The Vision of Escaflowne.

new version of the real folk blues at the end!!!
I was going to say I'm disappointed the video didn't preview any new compositions. Everything is a note-perfect rendition of the original. I just compared the Real Folk Blues from this video with the original and couldn't spot any differences, even in the random freak-out guitar sounds. The interviews talked about reworking. Either my ears aren't sharp enough to spot them, or I'll have to wait until Friday to hear the differences.

“I love that one, but I’m gonna redo it.”
Yes to this.
An excellent POV. I 100% agree. Jazz is fluid and organic. Let the adaptation be like it.
I actually like the reboot. Kinda expected that they will deviate from the original which I saw when I was in elementary.

Hearing The melody for The real folk blues at the end, such nostalgia.
"the music is so ahead of it's time"
I think someone will have to explain Bebop to Julia's actress
That being said, I'm so glad to see The Seatbelts performing! Hope there's new LPs coming with this adaptation

I don’t know I was really thinking the new show was going to be garbage but I’m actually pretty impressed so far
My favorite of her's is the Macross Plus sound track. Absolutely love the music on that one.

Her music often becomes so intertwined with the DNA of whatever she's working on that if you tried to resurrect the show without her music at best you'd have a body with little soul, if any at all. As others have noted, if anything the soundtrack is gonna be amazing.
