Ok this fundamental tip for chipping is a game changer. Been playing fir 3yrs down to 21hcp but my chipping horrendous practiced this for a couple of hours and bingo, Yahtzee, eureka, last 2 rounds I’m 5/shot better player……My guidance on technique is need to be confident in your upper body rotation. Amazing tip and thank you James🙏
I like that thought. I am someone who gets too focused on hitting the ball itself instead of making the motion. I like ideas that get me away from focusing on the ball itself.. Honestly I've tried all sorts of grips, styles, techniques, thoughts. I've never chipped so well as when I hover the club a bit. It feels like I have that cushion in the wrists to just drop them right on the ball..Then holster the gun in the left pocket....One thing I don't hear many instructors talk about is posture...getting to slunched over..NO BUENO.
great checkpoint 🎉 Can you make a video about uneven muddy lies. This time a year there's a lot of lies here you can't get a clean strike on it because of the ball being behind a clump of mud or in a hollow. What are the alterations in setup and shot choice?
This is great. As someone who has completely lost all short game skills, this is something to take a look at. For Winter practice, do you think there is any value in just chipping into a net from a mat? Have you any videos on Winter chipping practice where we don’t get a chance to get to the course?
My interpretation is that you, in the video, are getting to a position, then controlling flight via release from that position. His system works in a similar way but focusing on impact position, rather than a position prior to impact. Or at least that’s what I’ve taken from his videos 😂
Understood. The addition of loft in the video isn't how I'd hit higher shots. It was more to illustrate that you can release it in different ways from the same position
I actually don’t see it that way. Dan Grieve’s method is a “recipe”-based approach to short game that can cover most needs for the vast majority of players. This video is more about a pre-condition for good contact, regardless of release choice (including no release) and swing delivery (more body centered vs. more arms centered). I would see Dan Grieve’s approach as a special case of what James is proposing here. I personally have a hard time thinking about lines and positions (I’m very analytical, and I stop focusing on the shot and more on the geometry of the move), therefore I prefer a feels-based instruction, but I can see how this base for short game is a super important building block.
The purpose of this video is primarily to improve strike via a simple checkpoint. Not to produce certain ball flight outcomes, best to have a play around with the things you mentioned and figure it out 👍🏻
Perhaps the best explination of this shot on the internet I've seen thus far.
Best tip you’ve ever given, James. Thank you!

A most excellent term - slunched.
great checkpoint 🎉

Also thank you for the video! Forgot to say this in my original message.
Reminds me a bit of the Dan grieve 3 point release system idea.
Interesting, in what way?

Is that by driving the trail hand down into the ball.

Top class 💪
What is your grip pressure on a scale of one to ten? Thanks.
No mention of the degree of the loft wedge. ? How about grip pressure for each and different type of release. ?
