  • Today we're going over the build process that we used to make our black powder revolutionary war style cannon. We will go over what the barrel is made of and how it's constructed, how and what the carriage is made of, and how we proofed the cannon to make sure it was safe to shoot.
    If we didn't answer all your questions, drop a comment below and let us know!
    If you have any ideas about things you'd like to see us shoot with the cannon or shoot out of the cannon leave them in a comment below and we will try to get those out for you guys!

    Hi Jonathan, thanks for showing us the making of this cool cannon. I don‘t mean to offend, but i have 2 suggestions for you. The first is that you talk way too fast. Question: "How do you build a cannon?"
    Answer: "You take a hole and put metal around it!"
    Question: "And where do you get the hole from?"
    Answer: "Quite simply, you take a stovepipe and cut off the metal!"
    Best regards from a former German artilleryman (RakArtBtl 4-22)

      I built a small 1" bore cannon, just drilled out a hole on a lathe in a big chunk of steel, then shaped it roughly cannon shaped on the outside. The hard part was making the ball mold for the lead balls, but a fun project overall.

  • @anned8634
    @anned8634 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    i have built a few cannons.
    i plugged the breach by threading the tube with pipe thread tap and the plug with a pipe die heated the breach to blue hot and threaded the plug in and let the barrel srink down on the plug then welded the plug in with 120.000psi welding rod. then put it in the lathe and rounded the base and welded a trailer hitch ball on the base area.. the over tubes i cut on a lathe to a light interfearance fit then heated the outer tube and cooled the inter tube with CO2. this gave a very tight fit.

    That plug seems like its just being held by that pin. The plug isn't welded at all, without the pin there's nothing really preventing it from shooting right back at you.

    • @TheCannoneer
      @TheCannoneer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s also an oversized plug that’s driven down in there and quickly quenched for a pressed fit. It’s taken up to 1600 grains a few times and we never shoot anywhere near that on a regular basis. In fact the carriage just broke a bit as the force of the shot cracked one of the risers. I’ll be posting that before too long too. Good question!

    I’m watching how you guys built this. I have only one concern and please I’m not trying to be a know it all. The breech face was eventually made concaved because hot embers that were stuck in the right angle of the breech face from a previous shot would set off a powder charge of a follow up shot. The wet brush wouldn’t reach the burning embers in the corners. Resulting in unexpected detonations with ram rod in hand.

      No worries at all! Thankfully since it uses a plumbers cap at the end it’s actually convex in there but I didn’t know about that issue with the flat back ones! If u can steel stamp it that would be better especially for in the future. I stamp mine with cal, date, my name, model & for s/n I use the aprox mfg date & proof load the last one i stamp on an out of the way place, the others on the muzzle or end of trunnion like the originals😊

    I haven't been able to find any blueprints on a rev. war carriage, I need to make a 1/3 scale one for my 1/3 scale sea service 1 1/4" gun from south bend replicas.
    All my other cannons are of civil war & newer types.
    Antique ordnance publishers has real good blueprint books on guns & carriages. The one I use is titled artillery for the land services of the U. S. 1849- 1865 field artillery-I. it covers the 1841 6pdr, & 12pdr field howitzer, 3" 1861 parrott & ordnance rifles ect. And all carriage parts for same. I highly recommend it.
    I've got 4 full scale 3" guns. An M1861 ordnance rifle, an M1861 parrott rifle, a 3" whitworth breechloader & another 3" breechloader that's not done yet. I also have 5 40MMs 2 are muzzleloaders, 3 are breechloaders but 2 of those aren't done and unfortunately won't get done as I retired & I made them at work on my own time😊

    • @TheCannoneer
      @TheCannoneer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm so jealous of your collection. We couldn't shoot them anywhere but the fancy range in the newest video as our neighbors would lose it over anything that loud. I hope if our channel gets big enough we can get a 3" ordinance gun as they are my favorites. We go to the TN military collectors show and they have a ton of cannon builders for civil war stuff and it's such a good show anyway that just a bonus.
      We just based the carriage on drawings and what other people had for their reproductions, and the wheels aren't period correct per se, but it's just a pattern we just came up with at the time. I wish I had access to your old shop to build some of those guns!

    Shooting those mini baseball bats seems like a proof test all by itself. Just using a lot of propellant is not enough. You also need a heavy projectile in front of it.
    "The Idahoan" channel has some interesting videos on proofing his muzzle loaders. Also, iraqveteran8888 deliberately overloads a Kentucky rifle with lots of powder and ball to the point of destruction; suggesting proof and normal loads are "mild" by comparison.
    Friction in the bore is another factor that can chase up pressure with unconventional projectiles; so watch out.

    • @TheCannoneer
      @TheCannoneer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ll have to check out their channel and some of those videos! Thankfully the bats were a bit smaller than the bore so easy in and out and they also had a backer chip behind them to make sure they got pushed out for sure!

      True! Our cannon is actually the smallest that was actually fielded too. They used one in the civil war that was the same diameter on the CSA side. I’m hoping to make one of the weird projectiles it fired in the future to try out and do a little history on that gun.
