How to Shade a Portrait in Procreate by Haze Long

Recently there's a lot of enquiries regarding shadows and lighting... this is
a long overdue tutorial! Learn how to identify shadow patterns, create them and turn them into shadows.. Also learn how to paint highlights and a bonus tutorial for hair is included as well

This tutorial requires brush packs from hazelong.com. You can download them for free or include a donation to support me.
How to install :
1. Go to any of the link above. Put in any amount and checkout.
2. You will receive an email with a Download button.
3. First you can try to click on the button in your iPad.
4. The link should bring you to the brush set. Which you can load into Procreate by clicking on 'Open in Procreate'
Troubleshooting
1. Instead of clicking on the link in your iPad, you can click the link in your computer.
2. Unzip the file if need to and save it to your iCloud or Dropbox.
3. Navigate to that file in your iPad and click open with Procreate.
You also need Procreate 4 in order to import .brushset

Hi guys I received some comments stating I used layer masks in the video and did not show the step by step for the shading. This is done purely for demonstration so that I can speed up the class instead of showing you guys how I paint the shading each head at a time for 12 heads 3 times!! There are no instructions on how to shade the photo reference(with the doll heads) as it is just painting the shadow shape with the sketch brush. Just one step only.
BUT. As for the detailed explanation on how to shade THE ACTUAL PAINTING, what brushes to use etc it’s covered at 8:21 for natural lighting, 9:44 for backlit lighting and 10:44 for frontal lighting.
The reason why I did not show each n every head step by step is due to the audience retention analytics , it showed that 90% of the viewers skipped or stop watching at approx. 3 minutes plus for my tutorial videos. I have to shorten my videos and skip repetitive steps in order to be more concise and less draggy. Hope you guys can understand this.

Hi haze I don’t know if I can transport the brushes from your shop to my pro create pocket as I’m only a child and I use my mothers email so will it transport to my mothers phone or my phone if I use her email?
There will be a download link in the website once you confirmed the order. You just have to wait for it to load. It will also send an email. Then u can use your iPad to load the email n click on the download link as well. Both ways work

Hey Haze how are you just painting over the face and it gets only to the shadow areas as if you having alpha lock ? or this is just speeding the two processes of painting and smudging
I have a mask. N I use a big brush. Not relevant to the tutorial. I do this to cut down shooting time so that you guys don’t have to watch me scribble erase n smudge every head and hair. Then I just shoot the relevant parts of the tutorial if I think it is important to show the entire process.

Hey! I hope you’re safe & healthy, I’m loving the video so far! But i just wanna tell something about the little kitty, i have a kitty too same as yours and i don’t think you should use it in your videos cats, they are not an accessory let her do what she was born to do.. have fun eat and sleep they weren’t born to be “forced” to film a video on yt she wanted to go so bad and you don’t want anyone to do the same thing to you. I’M SURE YOU LOVE YOUR CATS i will never doubt that but us as human we make mistakes and it’s okay we just have to remind each other nicely so you & ur cat live a happy life.
Ill admit I thought the same thing as you at first, but she may have the kitten with her for multiple reasons. Of course its cute and fun for viewers to see, but shes also keeping track of it while busy making her video (instead of letting it roam by itself for so long and possibly getting itself into trouble). She could put it in a safe room while she makes the video, but it would be lonely. It doesnt seem like shes using the kitten to get views in my opinion.. mostly just keeping it close to her while she does her work. But im so glad that there are people like you and I who care about animals so much 🥺❤

I don’t think Her attentions were bad at all, i cannot get enough of my cat neither & i want her to be with me everywhere, cats are the coolest duh, but i could never let my cat somewhere where she doesn’t feel 💯 & i know cat’s language body when they want to leave and she obviously did wanna jump off lol & cat around. It would’ve been so good if she only showed her in the beginning of the video. Honestly she took all my attention lol i adore cats & i admire you for being a cat lover as well ❤️ ☮️

Im a little confused on this, as it seems that you've made layer masks so that when we should be coloring in the shading its only going to do in the areas it should (since you're going over a complete area such as the nose or under the eyes, and the blue shadow color is not shading that part) I can understand how this project may be helpful but it would be more helpful to show us how you shaded in the layer mask to show us how to do overall shading coloring and where we shouldn't be coloring in. If its already taking out the areas we shouldn't do, once we do it on our own we're not going to be quite sure where we should've left out and will probably overshadow.
The layer masks are for demonstration only. So that I don’t have to show you guys how I paint/shade 12 heads/hair 3 times in one video. The doll photo reference has no detailed steps as it is just coloring the shapes with the sketch brush. As for the detailed steps on how to do the same shading but more detailed and precise on the actual painting is covered 3 times starting from 8:21 for natural lighting , 9:44 for backlit 10:44 for frontal lighting.

I just realized. While all the rest of the world calls their phone just a phone, iphone users would never say they are using a phone. They took their selfies with their iphones. We all have phones but they have to announce that they are using iphones. Like, I would never say I took a selfie with my samsung phone.
