Black Mesa in itself has quite the story when it comes to it's MP5 depiction, with it possibly undergoing more changes than any other of the remake's arsenal (It certainly did as far as public media & game versions, at least). It's first form took the shape of an MP5 with a MP5K-style folding stock, RIS hand-guard, EOTech sight & a GP-30 minus-the-pistol-grip (As was seen in renders & a gameplay trailer around 2008). Then the mod release in 2012 had the MP5 with extended sliding stock, M203PI, barrel shroud & muzzle attachment as per the End of Days set-up or the "MP5 EOD" as it's often informally named (Of which what real-world examples of the Malaysian Armed Forces actually used that I can find aren't too far removed from). Then finally, the Early Access & Retail version had it's MP5 with a railed hand-guard & a shortened M203PI that was more closely based on the original Half Life's world-model (The version you saw lying about or in other characters' hands), except with the sliding stock fully extended & used. Of course, the modding scene provides a few different options ranging from higher-fidelity "MP5 EOD" variants to a recreation of the original Half Life view-model (The version you saw in your own hands, AKA the MP5SD that wasn't "SD" at all & had an under-barrel grenade launcher).
@@thecommunistloli1042 You're right in that it's the most well known Half Life fan game, I don't deny that. But I'd wager a lot more people are familiar with the name Half Life in general, than who know about Black Mesa. If that makes sense.

That launcher may not have sights of any kind because it’s intended for the same sort of short range/ close quarters shooting as the MP5 itself. @@TheArklyte Not to mention the world and external models were of a non-SD variant, the player's equipped model was an SD variant, and the sounds used when firing sounded neither suppressed or unsupressed.
Beanbag would make lethal and less lethal available at all times. Smoke for marking targets and obscuring movements in the open. Teargas for area denial. Frags for those hard to reach spots. I mean, it may not work for military applications, but it would be great for home defense.
Just wondering what types of ammunition you could get for the grenade launcher other than the sort that explodes. Smoke? Rubber pellets? Canister? Tear gas/pepper? Birdshot? Might be more uses for it than first comes to mind.
Yes, one of the top comments mentions this, copy and pasted. "PASKAL, the Malaysian Royal Navy guards were famously well known locally for using mp5s with m203 underslung grenade launchers. These launchers would be fitted with stun and smoke grenades and would be used to breach into closed rooms on ship raids in the event that a cargo ship has been seized by pirates. Aside from that, they were also well known for adopting the XM8 carbines because they needed lightweight short barrel rifles that are shorter than an m4 carbine to be able to move around a ship interior more freely while still having armor piercing capabilities."
Being a 40x46mm launcher like the M79, XM148, M203, and M320, it should be able to load any of the shells compatible with those, meaning almost all. Unlike the XM148 and M203, you can load one of these with longer shells, such as certain illumination flares and smokes, and probably the 40mm Rayhteon Pike missile (no idea if it's actually properly compatible with that one, however).
Well, regarding MP7+launcher. I do not know if it exists IRL, but in HL2 Combine SMG (visual derivative of MP7) does have a granade launcher in mechanics if not in the model.
Considering the mp5's is most well known for hostage rescue and counter terrorism type uses, the less than lethal grenades like CS gas grenades make a lot more sense for this weapon. It would be kind of awful to be stuck with this gun in an actual warzone where HE would be needed, even with the grenade launcher it would probably feel like a slight upgrade from being issued the m79 in vietnam.
As a firearm fan, I love learning about all guns, no matter what they are, no matter if I've never seen them before, or even if I am already familiar with a specific firearm. As an author(I write as a hobby), I love learning about guns so I can accurately represent them in my stories, as a variety of firearms feature heavily in almost every one of them. And as an American, guns are my jam, so I love learning everything about them. Coincidently, I'm the same with dinosaurs, but that's irrelevant here. Long story short: I love these videos, and keep up the good work!
I always liked to think that Marines in Half Life used MP5s with underbarrel grenade launchers specifically for the Black Mesa incedent with particular reasons in mind. Since it was going to be just a "clean up" 9mm (especially if the Marines, hypothetically, had hollow point ammunition) is ideal for dispatching poor scientists at close range, not as loud as 5,56 while firing indoors and also compatible with service pistol. The grenade launcher on the other hand can help with clearing out barricaded sciense and security personal, open up firing ports or possibly passage ways through concrete and brick walls, shooting off door hinges (if used with buckshot type 40mm shells) or delivering teargas to force poor bastards to run in the line of sight. The only downside of this weapon system would be insufficient penetration of the 9mm against armored security guards, but I guess that's where volume of fire and shot placement would come into play (or maybe they have some crazy secret squirrel russian-style high pressure steel core 9x19 ammunition in 2 spare mags marked with red electrical tape? That would be wicked cool).
I think there was a mod that had the ide of adding in an M4/M16 together whit the MP5. whit the player seeing a lot more HECU whit M4/M16 outdoor (long range) and more MP5 on the indoor maps. note that mod ide was also to have some HECU spawn whit the other tool so if indoor you would normally see 8 HECU where 6 had smg and 2 had shotgun. the mode would replace 2 of the smg whit M4/M16. the M16 did more damage against armor then the MP5 but had a slower firing speed and I think each bullet did about the same damadge (against none armored stuff).
I'd say that: 1)it sort of makes sense for SWAT/Trojan as they don't need full power assault rifle that will shoot through walls and injure civilians across the street from operation. GL can be used for smoke, gas and concussion munitions. 2)if you don't plan to giving your grenadier full weight AR, this might be a good option. Except I'm not sure how much value is in that collapsible stock in such configuration. And it also lacks GL sights.
Deploying smoke, gas or flashbang with launcher in hostage rescue and similar missions gives one very needed tactical advance as you can shoot them through windows, vents and doorways from moderate distances even without sights.
The RM Equipment M203PI still in production, was marketed from circa 1987, they issued a brochure in 1990 which showed a M203 fitted to a MP5 among other weapons.
At least in the UK, the rapid response armed police use G36 variant carbines with grenade launchers that fire baton rounds. Standard practice is to jump out the car, scream for them to surrender and hit them with a baton round, then they either surrender or are engaged. Immediate engagement, but not immediately lethal and gives the suspect a chance to surrender.
@@pluemas a lot of departments in the US use stand alone GLs for beanbag or caspian rounds. They’ll also use them with those and CS for riot control. I don’t think anyone uses them as an under barrel with the exception of military police and security forces for military installations.
I'm pretty sure that extractor WOULD kick an empty casing out like a shot shell, the dummy grenade is likely heavier by a fair margin and if you do that while holding the gun like you would during use, it would also eject backwards or downwards which helps as well.
Wow!!! So there's really a MP5 w/Grenade Launcher attachment Up until now, I've only seen these in Video Games, an IRL one is Most Definitely fraking Awesome!!!!!

Easily see such developed for urban/house-to-house combat where your unit might come under fire from 'balcony' shooters. (Shooters positioned on the upper floors or rooves of structures)
They should produce the 37mm version for export. It would sell very well on the US market; at least $2k per unit sales price, with no need to worry about any firearm licensing issues.
I could see some practical use for an mp5 with a launcher. What I see as more of a use for it is not a military setting but a law enforcement use while using nonlethal options like tear gas, flash bangs, etc.
What's the arming range of a HE 40mm -- 14m min? Breaching, Illumination and IR, Less lethal, CS/CN ...some possibilities, now please make a 40mm flechette round... And it does look rather cool. Yes, I liked End of Days.
I suppose it might, as well as uses mentioned by Special Forces, also have the surprise element for them, as an enemy might expect them to be lightly armed with only guns, so a grenade launcher may come as unwelcome surprise. Also a grenade launcher may lob grenades further / more accurately than a thrown grenade. It also lightens the overall load as they wouldn't need a separate weapon to launch grenades. That might be interesting to combine with an MP5SD, so you have the option of a covert entry but if discovered go loud with grenades. Also an SF force could lob flash bangs into a defended area then rush it before the enemy recovers, minimising casualties and maximising intelligence potential by using non lethal munitions.
The "normal" M203 mount would be with the longer barreled carbine version of the MP-5. Gorgeous weapon combo. US Navy SEALS were carrying that version back in "about " 1995. It did not load by turning the barrel sideways like what that vid version does,, it broke open/went forward like the older models of M203 to load another round.

I hope someone on the Black Mesa steam workshop creates a skin for the MP5 based off of this. Would be pretty cool to finally have the real-world counterpart more accurately depicted in a video game.
give it time or..."prepare for unintended consequences"
IF they ever did Half Life as a miniseries (I'd do it like 24. Real time) G-man should be Bob Odenkirk, Jeff Goldblum, Ben Mendelson or (outside chance but he'd nail it) Kiefer Sutherland.
While that would be cool and I would love to see it, I will say that it's the US millitary using it for a unit that doesn't actually exist. In the world of half-life it would make complete sense for the US government to equip thier secret hazardous enviorment response team (And the extra-secret black ops cleanup team but maybe they just took those from the HECU) with thier own model of MP5 grenade launcher that is perhaps based off this one but is actually an independent design.

My first thought to why was. Half life
Now only thing that’s missing is a 50 round clip instead of 50 round drums 😁
Those were the days.
First thing that popped in my head is Hal life
I like scribbling random λ's sometimes and seeing how many people ask "what is that?", and I just smile.
"Don't 'nade your fingers" and an X-Zibit reference? Jonathan you are magnificent :D
Honey wake up a new royal armouries episode is out
For years I've been telling people Heckler & Koch doesn't mean anything, they're just two family names. One day a German overheard me and pointed out that the names themselves mean "Lumberjack and Cook". So there you go: Lumberjack & Cook Machine Pistol nr Five.
Well, duh, you think English is the only language where a lot of classic professions turned into names?
Heckler does not mean lumberjack in German. It doesn't mean anything. It is definitely only a name.
Messerschmitt means "knife maker".
@@ytucharliesierra Heckler: South German: occupational name for someone who used a small hoe from a diminutive of Middle High German hacke hoe + the agent suffix -er. German: variant of Häckler (see Hackler ). Source: Dictionary of American Family Names 2nd edition, 2022
So, a name for a fieldworker of sorts.
Try spending at least five minutes on Google before clearing all doubt that you might not know what the hell you're claiming to be talking about.
@@Anvilshock Thanks for the info, I obviously stand corrected.
Good to know there's a weapon ready to go if there's a resonance cascade event anywhere in the world.
At this point with Johnathan and these videos it really feels like a mate just showing you his collection and having the odd bants.
To be fair, from the title I've expected the old MP5N + M203PI combo (which was actually used in HL, if I recall correctly), this GL I haven't even heard of. Thanks for the video!
Also, since Jonathan is apparently in his good mood already, I wish him to keep it that way! 😊
To be fair SMG in Half Life was a mess. It used MP5 with underbarrel grenade launcher as a model... BUT at the same time it used an icon of russian Bison SMG with underbarrel helical magazine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@TheArklyte Not to mention the world and external models were of a non-SD variant, the player's equipped model was an SD variant, and the sounds used when firing sounded neither suppressed or unsupressed.
@@TheArklyte and the 50rd magazines too.
@TheArklyte the icon is actually the MP5 with the magazine removed, and a longer M203 grenade launcher.
Ideal combo for me is this on an mp5SD. 9mm when you want to be quiet, 40mm when you don’t.
This was such an entertaining episode. I wonder if this was primarily designed for smoke or explosive use.
This is the most 80s action hero thing ever and I am all for it 😂
Well, regarding MP7+launcher. I do not know if it exists IRL, but in HL2 Combine SMG (visual derivative of MP7) does have a granade launcher in mechanics if not in the model.
I'm 1 year late, but to answer your question, a MP7 can have a grenade launcher, it just looks different than the one in the game
Ah, Ferguson! I see you‘re in this mess too
Considering the mp5's is most well known for hostage rescue and counter terrorism type uses, the less than lethal grenades like CS gas grenades make a lot more sense for this weapon.
So sad that we live in a country where you can't legally raise and keep dinos.
Love it. I’ll take the Beretta 92 version please. I’ll need a new holster though.
Well Freeman fired a lot of grenades from the mp5
Oh he does reload it after firing, there's just no animation for it.
He reloads so fast that the human eye can’t notice.
I just like the idea that he had that inert round in his suit coat pocket
Did its job in Black Mesa 🙏
16:20: Is that a grenade in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
I wish I would have had one of these when I went to Ravenholm
I remember seeing this in a book at a library, and searching for years to find a picture or information online.
This combo solves a lot of problems.
As a Rainbow Six veteran there were often times I had to put the gun aside and reach for a smoke/stun grenade 😅
I'd say that:
1)it sort of makes sense for SWAT/Trojan as they don't need full power assault rifle that will shoot through walls and injure civilians across the street from operation.
That pivot reference, I swear I could hear Ross yelling in that stairwell the second after ahahaha
The RM Equipment M203PI still in production, was marketed from circa 1987, they issued a brochure in 1990 which showed a M203 fitted to a MP5 among other weapons.
6:42 Jonathan: "I won't go into the technical detail on that..."
Me, out loud: "Please do!"
This seems like a more useful tool for LE using less than lethal projectiles than special operations using it for more offensive measures.
The sound quaility in wthis video is excellent
I'm pretty sure that extractor WOULD kick an empty casing out like a shot shell, the dummy grenade is likely heavier by a fair margin and if you do that while holding the gun like you would during use, it would also eject backwards or downwards which helps as well.
Wow, that is absolutely beautiful, i love this channel because of these beauties.
Perfectly kept as well -- just gorgeous, thank you for sharing this one.
Wow!!! So there's really a MP5 w/Grenade Launcher attachment
Up until now, I've only seen these in Video Games, an IRL one is Most Definitely fraking Awesome!!!!!
Half Life intensifies!!!!
That's Awesome! thanks for showing this iconic gun
just like the movie END OF DAYS mp5 with a grenade launcher. that movie made me want one so bad.
"Speak softly and carry a big stick" comes to mind
Thanks Jonathan & all the team responsible for all the really interesting videos. Catch You next episode.
I had no idea there even existed something similar which could serve as a basis for the HL1 SMG+GL. Fascinating! Here I always thought it was an absurdity!
If I recall correctly, the MP5N+M203PI combo was actually tried by the US military for MOUT back in the late '90s, and the troops in the photos I saw were wearing the urban variant of M81 camo, just like in the HL.
The mp5 with a grenade launcher is real 😍
Easily see such developed for urban/house-to-house combat where your unit might come under fire from 'balcony' shooters. (Shooters positioned on the upper floors or rooves of structures)
I thought Half life mp5 was fantasy! That's amazing!
Very cool "splody" thing!
5:18 i feel older now lmao
Does it come with a crowbar?
It's a shame to waste bullets or grenades when you only need to open packing crates :)
If you take off the rubber buttpad it reveals a wedge shaped that HK Development Group designed to use it like a halligan.😉
This is my room clearing grenade launcher. LOL
My mate is in love with this gun, specifically with the underbarrel grenade launcher
I'm glad to find out the MP5 from half life was based on a real configuration. Thanks for the history lesson, Sir
The grenade launcher sounds are incredibly satisfying. Very clunky and nice
"We could use aluminum....but, instead, we're going to use aluminium. Because that's what it's called!"

Looks a lot like the M203 that was put on the M16 to replace the M79 Blooper.
Yes End of Days! I love that movie! I always thought the grenadier MP5 was a joke but wow
Actually the MP5 with grenade launcher was popular in both medias such as Ends of Days and Half Life.
The sight for the gl mount to the mp5's claw mount.
I vaguely remember one movie I saw had a fn minimi shorty with a m203 attached! Now that rediculous considering how bloody much it weighs on it’s own
What's the arming range of a HE 40mm -- 14m min? Breaching, Illumination and IR, Less lethal, CS/CN ...some possibilities, now please make a 40mm flechette round... And it does look rather cool. Yes, I liked End of Days.
A 40mm flechette round existed for the M79.
Also an SF force could lob flash bangs into a defended area then rush it before the enemy recovers, minimising casualties and maximising intelligence potential by using non lethal munitions.
suprisingly i can see that really good for CQB with the use of smoke or chemical rounds
Okay hear me out, a revolver with a grenade launcher on it labelled “The Bigger Iron On His Hip”
Toothpick with an underbarrel-ICBM
My national guard unit had a guy break his thumb when shooting a stand-alone m320. He had his thumb slightly in front of the muzzle.
ohhhhhh! that would've fkn hurt.
@Sgt Snoke Eh yeah the guy was an E6 in the navy. He was recruited to the guard during the height of the global war on terror. They didn't require him to go to army basic. Just a few familiarization courses and a job course. The guy never handled an m-4 until joining the guard. Good nco though. He was one of the commo ncos
As a massive gun nerd, I envy Mr Ferguson.
I don't know if it pays well, and I'm sure that there are a lot of duties involved that aren't fun ... but he has the best job. :)
I also wish that I didn't live on the other side of the world (at least as far as GMT goes), because the event mentioned at the end sounds fun anf educational.
I would love to go but I work weekends unfortunately but hopefully in the future.
40mm rounds have a minimum arming distance. So having it on your weapon doesn't mean you're at risk of harming yourself.
Still best to not lean on that safety if you don't have to. It's there to save you if you mess up, not to save you from reckless use.
You have a projectile hitting your fingers, that's an ow.
@@44R0Ndin that's true of every weapon.
@@ivanthemadvandal8435 Yes, but it bears repeating here since the person I was replying to basically said "Ehh the safety will keep me safe". The problem is what if the safety doesn't keep you safe? That only needs to happen once and you won't be shooting anything ever again.
@@44R0Ndin be that as it may, Johnathan is exaggerating the friendly fire potential of this weapon combo
Do the HK Slap! My god that psr video will live in my head for life! I love indirect too.. in 💕! Thanks for sharing
Truly a manificent creation. Wish you can feature an HK53a3 with the ISL 201 grenade launcher attached in the future. That will make my day! More power to your channel. Cheers!
I have a souvenir fron Nam, a round from an m79 launcher made in to a cigarette lighter.
I once had a gun builder app on my phone that would allow you to stick a full size M203 on an MP5 that looked even sillier than this one.
Do one for the Armburst rocket launcher from hl please.
There are no videos anywhere on that one.
For maximum chonk put the supressor on it, then it would be great for building clearance
THAT'S A COOL LOOKING MP5!!!!!!! The H&K MP5 is my second favorite submachine gun!! But the H&K MP5K, however, is my favorite submachine gun!!
little tip for the filming, do it in a white room like "airsoft mike". he presents airsoft guns and the white room makes all the little details better visible (like the firing pin in the 40mm). would make this show even better. cheers
@Jonathan. This weapon system would be useful with the launcher if you consider two specific types or rounds. Those being Chemical irritant rounds and Beehive or in essence 40mm buckshot rounds.
