I remember Dolph Ziggler calling an Elimination Chamber match (because everyone else forgot their spots) but making it look like he was yelling at them instead of informing them. I honestly believe that’s why he’s never been fired by the WWE; he’s smart.

I think Mark Henry’s chamber popped loose and he realized he would look weak if he waited for his spot, so he joined the match early and they all had to wing it from there.

It didn't really work, you could clearly tell he was directing traffic. And it wasn't everyone forgetting their spots, IIRC the guy running the pods fucked up and let out the wrong guy, so Dolph basically had to re-agent the match from scratch, while the match was ongoing.
That match was a fucking disaster, and would have been even more of one without his quick thinking.

I found out that's why a lot of wrestlers wore their hair a little long: so they could lean in and call the spot, or lean over and blade without being seen.

The funniest spot I heard was DDP on Nitro....
DDP used to do a spot where he would put his opponent in the corner, slap them across the face and yell, "Wake up!!" before whipping them to the opposite corner.
One episode of Nitro, and I don't remember the opponent, DDP went for the slap in the corner and delivered a huge POTATO - and, if I remember correctly his opponent looked a bit surprised. When DDP leaned in to whip the guy to the other corner, the camera was right there, and you could hear DDP say, "I'm sorry, man," before sending him off!!
I've been looking all over for that clip.😂😂

I remember watching WM 30 live and during the Taker - Brock match, just before the ending where Brock reverses the tombstone to the final F5, just as Taker leaned over to pick-up Brock; I heard him say "reverse to F5". I even rewound it (like right after) and could still hear it, but when playing it back later (on the network or TH-cam) it had been edited out.

that's what i liked about 80s wrestling. it all just seem to well put together and rarely saw anyone make a mistake, or do something stupid. worked like clockwork each and every time. then again if you worked with same person over and over again it would be easier. but now with everyone wanting to move so damn fast it's just impossible for anyone to keep up or slow down to the point were everyone is on the same page.

Seeing this reminds me of how MVP disguises calling out spots for Olmos as "coaching". It's a simple but believable explanation, and given Olmos skill level it's probably true.😅
In all seriousness I have been liking MVP's work as a manager, I liked him better with Lashley but Olmos clearly needs him more.

When I think "weird mouth noises" and "professional wrestling" my mind always goes to Jay Briscoe, may he rest in peace. Actually, watching enough of his matches, a fan would have a good idea about which spot was coming next based on what noise Jay was making, but in my opinion that was something that made his matches, especially when he was on offense with the crowd behind him, so fun to watch. Mark to an extent too, but that was more so Mark imitating Bruce Lee.

Silence during AEW women's matches reminds me that Allysin Kay and Marti Belle can communicate without speaking. This was discovered when they were part of rival factions and lead to them becoming a tag team once both of those were dissolved...not that I expect or even want AEW to sign them at this point. It'll take more than those two to turn things around even with that skill.

Obviously Jerry Lawler and Terry Funk had to become masters of it to have an empty arena match, much like Jim Cornette had to basically become an auctioneer to make his point in the two minute promo segments. Pulling off an empty arena match also cemented Black Rose one of Howard Brody's favorite women wrestlers and mine. She and her opponent, Sienna Duvall, barely shared a language at the time but my admittedly untrained eye saw no issues and Brody saw fit to use her for another two years, until it was time to try and get Ring Warriors a television deal.

I always wondered how the good match callers did it. Obviously, you need cameramen and a director who know what not to focus on, like a wrestler's face when he's got the other guy in a rest hold. I was actually surprised to learn that Steve Austin called his famous I Quit Match with Bret Hart. If you're in ring with Bret, I don't care who you are, unless he okays it, he's calling the match. Everyone should have seen the Goldberg injury coming a mile away. He was a guy rushed out of the Power Plant and never learned how to have a match that lasted over 5 minutes. He did squash matches. He'd no-sell everything, spear you, jackhammer, 1-2-3. Why someone like that was calling an actual, non-squash match with Bret Hart in the first place just baffles me. Shouldn't it be the veteran calling things, if they're doing it on the fly? AEW is the worst for exposing their business. Almost every match you'll see a blade lying there or being passed to the referee or guys calling crazy spots. It's bad in WWE as well with guys like Cena. I don't hate John Cena, but I was never as big a fan as some people were either. His era was post-Attitude, so it was at least a step below the previous generation. In the Attitude Era, I don't know if any gimmick with John would have made him a main event guy. Granted, in today's WWE, he'd absolutely be the top guy.

Under normal circumstances, the heel calls the match, hence why Austin called the WrestleMania 13 match and if I'm not mistaken, I believe Goldberg was a heel in late 1999 as well. But in reality, should he have been calling that match? Absolutely not. WCW management was always incredibly overconfident in Goldberg's abilities, since day one, so I wouldn't be shocked if that was just another example of it.

I wonder if the preparation of each spot in the matches nowadays is partially due to the quiet crowds, like Brian said. The fans aren’t clamoring to flay the heel alive or cheering the babyface, so the majority of wrestlers can’t call spots on the fly without completely giving it away audibly.
