I had never heard of Townes Van Zandt until a year ago. I walked into a waffle house and seen an old trucker sittin by himself crying. I asked what's the matter and he just showed me the original song, and then this one. That's how powerful a good song can be.
As soon as I can catch a Whitey Morgan and Cody Jinks concert close by I can die a happy man!! The music is killer!
I've seen Cody Jinks numerous times, but about six months ago I saw Cody and Whitey at Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth. What a show! I really do believe these guys are the Merle Haggard's of our time. The music is already there, the music industry just hasn't caught up yet. Fuck pop country.

When I listen to that song, I always think about life ... I want more songs like that.
Wow! Brother, you absolutely nailed this song! This is one of the most haunting, rawest songs ever written and when performed by lesser talents it becomes a train wreck pretty quickly! The first time I heard it was in the film/documentary, "Heartworn Highways". When TVZ sat in his trailer in the old Clarksville section of Austin, TX, and played it to Uncle Seymour Washington, his crazy girlfriend, Cindy and his dog, Geraldine! The song brought Uncle Seymour to tears, and this is a man known as the "walkin' blacksmith"! A black man born in Texas in 1896, he certainly had his share of dark memories built up over his 80 years of life! If a song can bring a man that hard and tough to tears then you've met the writer's goal! Take your audience out of their comfort level and make them feel!! Well, it was pretty obvious you took this song with you to that place in your soul, that most of us are afraid to open the door on! We're afraid to go there, because it's a place of broken glass, old tears, spilt whiskey, shattered promises, empty apologies, and ideas and dreams that have long ago passed their expiration date! Obviously , Townes wrote this from a pretty dark place and if you're gonna do it justice as a performer, you'd better connect with the lyrics at a visceral level! Well, like I said at the start, dude, you killed it! Thanks!
