    You kind of missed the biggest part of Conan that being he represents the fact that so called civilization has lost its way, Conan can be crude at times but he has a code of ethics that are much more honorable that his city dwelling counterparts. This is the message Howard tried his best to focus on and promote.

    • @bathombre9739
      @bathombre9739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yes, that is a strong message, civilization leads to deterioration in society, especially the individual, a quick comparison can be made between people currently living in big cities and lets say the country, theres no comparison between which individual is better mannered

      @@bathombre9739 I grew up on a small farm on the outskirts of a very small town and I have to agree with you, I hate huge cities and avoid them if possible. However I did notice the people from other countries have been extremely friendly in big cities (especially surprisingly Moscow, people bent over backwards to be friendly and help me there).

      @@josephskiles i don't want to say that all people in cities are rude and so forth, but i know there are studies that have shown people living in cities are less happy than those living in smaller towns or in country. I dont think humanity is meant to live in very large cities but with the kind of large population we have that is difficult to achieve. At the very least we should get to know all of our neighbors and build strong relationships. Conan is my favorite character, he had his own moral and honor standards not based on the group think mentality but the individual, maybe thats why i enjoy him, he wants to be himself and not bound to a collective. By crom he is the best!

      @@bathombre9739 I only wish writers these days could come up with characters that where just half as interesting as Conan and some of Howards other heroes/ er at least protagonist. As a reader I could almost always identify with the actions of Red Sonya or Solomon Kane because they made sense and stayed true to the character REH had brought to life for us, but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know

    • @bathombre9739
      @bathombre9739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@josephskiles yes, of course. I always compare human civilization as the character of a modern dog, nice loyal predictable in behavior, but that is because the nature of a dog has changed due to human intervention, dogs may be happy but they have lost their previous more savage nature, same with humanity, we are no longer what we were. That is why i believe conan its at such odds against civilization, it would transform him outside of a more savage human who dares to fight back to a submissive creature that obeys just like a modern dog

    Conan may have had a code of ethics but anyone who has read the original stories by Robert E Howard knows that Conan is also a thief a murder an assassin he often done what was needed to be done to survive but he was also very smart as he was fluent in many languages able to read and write them and a masterful tactician

    I fell in love with the novels at a very early age, and they have had a strong impact to the development of my creative and curiouse side. Today, I study the history and mythology of my homeland through dark-tinted glasses of sword and sorcery, because I cannot help it! The "Age undreamed of" echoes also in the verses of Kalevala and the forgotten history of Finland, and I am sure that every country has lived it's Hyborian age, somewhere far...far in the past. You can feel that unknown past of your own heritage pump in your veins while you read these novels, or listen to Basil's wonderful music...

      That might be a mistake. They borrow some names from each other, but you'll find as many conflicts as you will consistencies. They are also just different in tone. The Cthulhu Mythos is cosmic horror all about the futility of human existence. In Howard's Hyborean Age, we have right there adventure stories with a human protagonist who consistently challenges and supernatural/horrors and always wins.

    A good deal of useful information shared in this video. Good stuff there!
    I would love a deeper dive however. You say Conan is a rich and layered character far more compelling than what has been shown on the Big Screen?
    I don't doubt that, but perhaps a few selections from his tales to illustrate this point?

    • @lordzaboem
      @lordzaboem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The Frost Giant's Daughter" is a Howard story from very early in Conan's career. Conan might even be a teenager in this story. As a protagonist, he relies on his physical abilities exclusively to resolve his conflicts. "Beyond the Black River" is set many years later when Conan is a gruff veteran. In that novel, Conan mentors younger soldiers and leans heavily into his skills and experience.
      I'd recommend these as starting points.

      He isn't Bulgarian, it clearly says he has Gaelic descent. It literally says that about his character and backstory. The Cimmerians were to represent Gaelic/Celtic and or Irish. He isn't anywhere close to being related to Bulgarian descent. Idk where you got that information, read the lore about him and his people. Also to correct you, everyone that wasn't Roman or didn't believe in their religion or values were considered Barbarians. Particularly all of Germania, even Africa they were considered barbarians. You need to go back and do some research, you have no idea what you're talking about. You just spew these things out without no factual evidence because you take pride in being Bulgarian. Like many of Howard's pulp fiction characters (he also wrote Westerns and mystery novels) Conan is simply an exaggerated version of Howard himself...a tall and robust Irish American from Texas who was so fond of his mother that he committed suicide after she died. Most of the artistic representations of him reflect Frank Frazetta's somewhat exaggerated take on Classical aesthetics that are of course Mediterranean in origin. Howard apparently did not like them much, but he was less offended by them than he would be by his character being portrayed by Arnold Swartzenegger, because he did not like Germanic people very much. He would probably have preferred to see Conan played by someone like George Clooney or Sir Sean Connory.

      @@kupidonarowhatz8412 The real life Cimmerians were originally thought to be Celtic in origin which could explain things, or maybe Howard just wanted to have fun with the setting and didn't care.

    • @lordzaboem
      @lordzaboem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any time that someone equates one of Howard's cultures to a real world ethnicity, trouble starts. The Picts of Howard's novel "Beyond the Black River" have even less in common with the real world tribe called the Picts than they do with the Mayans. The Cimmerians of Conan stories specifically are descended from refugees of Atlantis, so now we are arguing over whether Atlantis was in the Middle East or Scotland. I could make an argument that Cimmerians are Texans like Howard, but I'll refrain. It's better to just not try to equate Howard's stories with anybody.
