After being disability retired from Air Force in 2007 I raised compost worms. We are going to do so again as well as your rain gutter system. One warning. I put *ONE* apples worth of peels in my compost worm bin and *all* the worms died in the 100 gallon bin. I was told later it was the pesticides on the peel. I have NEVER eaten an unwashed apple since!
I am a rabbit breeder and all winter long when I clean the rabbit barn I put rabbit manure in my garden and my plants grow like crazy during the summer. I also put some in my compost to attract worms. Rabbit poo is the best and it hardly smells as long as urine is not mixed in. I was thinking about selling the manure. I have been cleaning and separating the hey from it so I have a lot stored up. I also put an outdoor rabbit hutch that houses 5 rabbits directly into my garden.
If we ever meet, I am buying the first beer. In 2012 I tried just 6 ten ft pieces of gutter and watered plants from my farm pond. Fish crap in the water made it out produce my ground plants which have composted cow and chicken manure in the mix. I now am running 17 twenty ft(mostly) gutters watered by a twelve volt pump via the pond. We grew potatoes in grocery sacks as well. I grow worms for pond fishing and composting. Time to put it all together. God Bless the Hall family, 28Bull
Hi Larry I love how you are sharing your learning adventure and I think your plants will love you for the addition of worms. I saw on a video that if you add an inward curved lip to your container, the pool, the worms can't escape.
Great enthusiasm my friend, sounds like you would be successful whatever path you choose .. keep it up, it rubs off on people and improves life in many ways.
I've been doing this for a while by putting a few scoops of worm-filled compost into the top of my earthboxes every now and then. The worms live in the earthboxes. The worms don't seem to overpopulate/reproduce unless they have a high abundance of food available to them. When you see little yellow egg sacs and tons of tiny worms, you know they are going to start overpopulating.
Larry...I love how you keep thinking! LoL! This is all workable stuff. People said that I couldn't raise worms in Las Vegas because it's too hot...I'm raising them in contained area's (with a little work and help) but they're also thriving in my garden beds with external temps of 110+...with a little help also! Keep thinking...keep trying and things will keep working!
Hey Larry! Great ideas, vermicomposting worms are being studied for food production in space, like for moon and mars colonies. Think about it, everything cycles, it's like a closed loop small scale farm, and low maintanance, keep it simple and reliability should be high design priorities. Your designs have all those qualities. Composting is a must, maybe first going for hydroponics for efficiency and then turning that biomass into fertilizer for organic systems. Space chickens also maybe, miniature cows?
Someone shared your video on our Container Gardening Gone to Pot group on FB (good name, huh?), and your ideas are so good and what I've been looking for. Thanks so much.
Love the idea! Tried making a worm bed, but I think they all died. I bought night crawlers from the store and put them where I dump my veggie scraps. The ground 12" down is loose. Not like the rest of the property which is mostly sandy/clay soil. I kept it semi covered with a shade clothe that would let water through, but in the last 2 months haven't seen the worms. May have gotten to hot here in Mississippi and they died.
I'm working with true Red Wigglers right now Larry...for composting I think they're the best although some will argue and they struggle in high heat here in Vegas but we're making it work. I'm almost 1 full year into raising them in containment and in garden soil. While it takes a little extra effort, it can work even here but I'm going to add African Nightcrawlers to the mix this fall. I know they can handle the heat better, I just want to see how they handle mild winters.
Dear mr Larry I'm jimmy CASTILLO from Philippines. Your video in self watering technology is nice and amazing. We have almost the same concept in mind. In studying vermi, and I just want to add to your concept. You can put organic beneficial microbial concoction. It is very easy to do. This nutrient is needed by the plants and also experimental application/use in animals proven to be beneficial and can be use is African night crawler as immune booster for faster composition into vermi cast/compost. Thanks a lot for sharing
Hey Larry I love your videos. When 28bull mentioned the fish pond I started thinking about aquaponics. Have you looked into that? no more grow bags just net cups. the fish feed the plants and plants clean the water. The wheels are always turning.
Hi Larry, when I first came across wick gardening it was a site by Colin Austin from Australia. He has worms in his wicking beds. One of his sites is Waterright. Maybe some information there might be helpful to you. Where I live in Australia we have issues with either not enough water or too much water, so wicking in all its forms is a wonderful idea. Thank you for your delightful & informative videos.
For those folks that have raised beds is to put a worn tower in the middle of their beds. This is something I'm looking into The only concern I have here in Pa. is the cold weather So now I'm adding a second layer so my bed will be about 20 inches tall I'm hoping that the deep bed will keep my worms Red Wiggles warm during the winter months. Do you recommend a different type of worms that will survive the cold winters??? Please let me know
Hello Larry, Have just discovered your videos and thinking of trying a RGG this spring! About worms, I have put compost from my worm bin in the square foot gardens on my balcony (all potting mix - no dirt) in the past - including whichever worms happened to be wriggling around in it at the time. When I plant each spring, I still find live worms. I don't feed them anything in particular, but they seem to find enough to eat on their own. It's surprising considering they get some temperature extremes on my balcony - they are surviving in only 6 inches of Mel's mix and we get several months freeze in the winter as well as a couple of months of >100 degree weather in the summer. The red wigglers are tough little buggers.
When I start watching your videos I have to first go get myself a couple of Beers because I know I'm going to get some kind of story out of you haha. Love your videos!!
Leaves will not do the same thing as peat moss, Peat moss absorb's moisture and holds it in the soil longer than anything else that is the reason for it. if you use leaves you will drain off the water your trying to retain.
Just subscribed trying to get my channel going and watch other you tubers with great ideas and wow you have some awesome ideas gonna try the worm bed idea nice to have our own worms for fishing thanks
How do I prevent HAB algae in rain gutter grow system filled each day and used to keep moisture in my garden 20" above our lake where there is sun? This algae has been reported in the lake but I don't use that water. One of my 4 gutters developed a green foamy surface that may not be toxic. I emptied it hopping it would dry and not reproduce whatever it was. .
Tim Brown: I think I lost all my night crawlers due to the heat. I covered the area with shade cloth, but I don't think that helped. Let me know if the African Nightcrawlers work out and where you purchased them from. Thanks, Gayle
I've been doing vermiculture in a couple of buckets and have been playing around withe the idea of getting a couple of rabbits for poop....NOW I KNOW it's a good idea. Thanks again Larry! P.S. have you eaten any micro toms yet?
Thanks! It is all about having fun and stretching the limits of what can be done in gardening that makes me do what I do! What kinds of worms are you raising?
Larry I love your system, but if you use the worms for castings will the plants get the nutrients from the castings. Will the castings still be good for another year?
The worms will not survive in the 2-3" of water in the kiddie pool. Maybe... fill the kiddie pool with pea gravel around the grow bags and this also will eliminate mosquitoes lavae. Like Dolly Egel-Eyre's comments, worms survive in the bottom of the Australian Wicking Beds which usually are filled with sand or gravel.
Hi Larry Do you know where Jim Hiller went to a Clinic for the setting up of his live wholesale bait business? I'm interested in doing similar with Alabama Jumpers or possibly African Night Crawlers part time and later as a business.
Hi Larry, what is the Facebook group called, just built my gutter system tonight and can't wait to get it started this spring, and would like to join group.thanks .

Think about useing LED lights cost less to run than Chirstmas lights Rocklers wood working supply has then in strips some are 12" apart thinking that would be perfect spacing for the grow bags also thinking you would need something to protect worms that escape to kiddy pool from things like 'coons the salad bar is tempting enough without adding fresh meat to buffet line wonder if the liquid from worms will flow down into the RG and be sucked in to none vermibags ? Vermi-tea ?

You could also feed the worms to some fish or other critters as a protein source.
IAM with wicking bed, will try it rain gutter system
Larry keep trying different things because you are enjoying it. Always something better which is good.

I love my red wigglers! I will not get any other! I got rabbits too! best combo ever
I have used wigglers in all my systems for years. they even work in flood drain aquaponics.
Hey Larry...Good luck with the new venture. Whatever it takes, I'm sure you'll make it happen.

Hi this method of watring is very good but do you water this bucket from the top
Add worm and fish tea to your rainwater container.
peat moss is not free! I use leaves! an abundance in the mountains! but thank you for the recipe! I think I will need 4 more rabbits though!
Leaves will not do the same thing as peat moss, Peat moss absorb's moisture and holds it in the soil longer than anything else that is the reason for it. if you use leaves you will drain off the water your trying to retain.
What do you use for fertilizer? And how often do you have to use fertilizer.

0:45 what is that copper band holding the float valve? It is a great idea- does it come pre-drilled with holes that fit the float?
Larry I love your system, but if you use the worms for castings will the plants get the nutrients from the castings. Will the castings still be good for another year?

Hi Larry. im a bit late 2017. any way. what would stop the worms from eating the roots of your plants as they would eat anything . x
worm dont eat live roots, bad nematodes does, but earthworms only eat diying tissue.
Thanks Big Guy I appreciate that!
Good luck. Sounds like a good plan
a timer a hose and a sprinkler no fuss no muss
Thanks
Brilliant idea Larry.Great going.

European night crawlers! you can order them from Amazon!
Are you going to fertilize the plants (with what)? Will your fertilizer have a negative effect on the worms?
I will use rabbit manure!
do you need a net cup if you use the Walmart bags?
I will take you up on that Beer! Yes put it together! Would love to have a pond to play with I would be dangerous then! Lol
