    [ VIDEO TRANSCRIPT ]
    Hi, I’m Mark from eReplacementParts.com. In this video, I’m going to show you how to replace the lower flexible drive shaft in a Ryobi trimmer. The lower flexible drive shaft is mounted inside the tube on your trimmer attachment. Its purpose is to drive the trimmer head. Common problems with the lower flexible drive shaft are the square ends will wear to round, at which point they’ll no longer drive. It’s also possible the damage to the cable if the trimmer head is stopped very rapidly. This can cause the cable to kink or even break.
    Replacing the lower flexible drive shaft is easy to do, and I’m going to show you how. Lower flexible drive shafts, as well as many other parts, can be found on our website. Let’s get started.
    I’ll begin by removing the bump head knob and the spool. I’ll use a small pick to pull the C-clip away from the shaft. Now remove the plunger and the plunger spring. Now remove the E-clip, the slider, and the two slider springs. I’ll use a pair of split ring pliers to do that. Now remove the retaining clip that secures the trimmer head to the shaft. This part is not reusable, so you don’t have to be real careful when you are removing it. I like to pry it away with a pick, and then use pliers or even a cutter to pull it away from the shaft if necessary. This one’s going to come off pretty easily.
    Now I can remove the outer spool from the shaft. The plastic outer spool is pressed onto a metal nut on the back side. To remove it, I’ll strike the end of the shaft with a rubber mallet. You don’t want to use a steel hammer here, because you will bend and damage the shaft. Now remove the bushing housing assembly. First I’ll remove the guard, then the retaining clamp, and the anti-rotation screw.
    Next, I’ll loosen the bolt that secures the clamp to the shaft. Now remove the anti-rotation screw and separate the bushing housing assembly from the shaft. And now I’ll remove the lower drive shaft.
    Before I install the new motor drive shaft, I’ll lubricate it with a little bit of bearing and chassis grease. A little bit on my finger, and slide that all over the shaft. And now it’s ready to be installed.
    You’ll notice that there’s a ring pressed onto one end of the shaft. This is the lower end or the end that goes on the trimmer head. So, I’ll slide the opposite end through the curved portion of the shaft, and insert it until that ring bottoms out, like that.
    Now I can install the bushing housing assembly. Before I do though, I want to make sure that I remembered to slide the retaining clamp over the shaft, then the shaft into the bushing housing assembly. Make sure everything lines up, and I’ll secure these two together with the anti-rotation screw and the clamp....

    Thanks for a great video. Really helped a lot.
    I have a 4 stroke 30 CC Ryobi and the end of the shaft broke off . I had an extension bar on and was using a pole saw to cut wood. I bent it too much and the end broke off. I took it home and repaired it. I had a spare shaft and connected it using this video. The springs caused all the pain and aggravation. My model had an extra spring. From the looks of it, that spring is used to keep the wires/cables in the slot in the back of the trigger housing. My other trimmer had the same extra spring and I could see it holding down the 2 cables/wires. I couldn't figure out how to install that extra spring. I put it all back together and everything seems fine. Trigger works good . Hope it works tomorrow.

    Thanks for the video. It was exactly what I needed to fix my trimmer. Your video saved me a lot of trial and error, especially with getting the old retaining ring off and the new one on.

    Great video. I have a stihl trimmer that the head is not spinning fast enough so not sure what the problem is but your videos are always great. Great camera work,nice and slow and easy to follow with no background interruptions. I hope my cable is this easy to replace and thanks.

      As of right now it is back in the shop only a year old and I told them not to replace anything if its not under warranty so we'll see what I end up with. My old weed eater I just work on and had the cable out and it looks really easy to replace so I should be good. Thanks Mark.

    Hi, i have to swap either the shaft tube over or the head bearing assemble to fit diff head with diff thickness shaft, one thicker than the other. Is the "bearing" simply a bush and how does that not wear out if not a bearing?? also should i try to put some oil into it?

    I have a Ryobi 25.4cc bent shaft that has a broken lower shaft. It has a different line head than in this video, but I thought the shaft would be the same. I ordered the part number you listed and when it arrived, it's much shorter when you pay it beside the outer bent tube.
    My question is are there different lengths?

    Why was it necessary to disassemble the timmer head? Seems that just removing the guard would allow the head and bushing housing to be removed as one unit.

    • @jackmackerel4151
      @jackmackerel4151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also no reason to remove the trimmer guard, it all comes off as one assembly.

      I thought I needed some tool to lock the hub from spinning to remove the trimmer housing of the Ryobi 720r I have, but I now realize I just need to unscrew the brush cutter attachment I have on it while holding the trimmer drum. The video shows that the housing is locked in place on the shaft by the plastic hex, so the video was helpful even if it was totally unnecessary to disassemble it to replace the drive shaft 🙃

    I thought i needed to replace gear head because the anti rotation screw sheared off.
    After disassembling, i found the lower drive shaft cable is stuck in the gear head. It will not come apart from the gear head. Any ideas??
    The cable being stuck inside the inner section of gear head, won't allow me to push the gear head back down all the way to the anti rotation screw hole to align the gear head.
    Would e been a lot of force to shear that screw. :/

    What keeps the drive shaft head from falling off? The anti rotating screw is it for the head not turning?

    • @wingerrrrrrrrr

      @@mj-ls7qr8xp3n mine was an easy fix - the shaft just wasn't secured enough to the guard and that's why it came off.
      I honestly wouldn't know what the issue is with yours, I'm a noob when it comes to these.
      Do you mean the trimmer line? If so, you'll need to undo the bob to unwind the trimmer line.

    Hey! I have a brand new P2500 Poulan Trimmer with the shaft Housing sligltly bended. Never started. Could I fix (unbend) the housing and the machine will work properly? Greetings from Mexico !

    • @FIXTechGuides
      @FIXTechGuides  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on how bad the bend is and if the shaft is crimped. The inner drive cable is flexible and runs through the outer shaft through several bushings inside. If the bend is minor you will probably be ok to just use it. You can straighten the shaft as long as you don't damage the inner bushings.

    Replacing the lower drive shaft is about as 'easy to do' as building your own space rocket....! Bin the strimmer, buy a new one, and add 6 months to your life expectancy - oh, and save yourself 500 dollars on all those special tools you need but don't have.....and will never find a use for again.
