BF Super Reverb in for a Tune Up.....Botched Wiring & Bad Tubes.....but a Happy Ending

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 มี.ค. 2023
  • In this video we will document the repair of a 1966-67 Fender Blackface Super Reverb circuit. As delivered, it had some serious wiring issues and worn-out tubes, including a 5U4 rectifier, rather than the proper GZ34. These problems allow for a discussion of repair theory as well as demonstration of the relative performance of the 5U4 vs GZ34, both with and without a Current Limiter in series. A demonstration of tremolo speed reduction is also provided. As usual, an audio demo is performed, including each of the effects......tremolo and reverb.....at various levels. We hope you enjoy it.

      @@UncleDoug Hey Uncle Doug!
      Hey got a tidbit of info, on my question about solid state amps and final ohms for lower output. I have just been told from a company that yes running an ohm speaker that produces max watts does in fact stress the internals more than running it at lower watts! Seems even some Marshall would have reliability issues when running a speaker with an Ohm rating producing max watts from the solid state amplifier! I have since altered my speakers/cabs so my solid state amps run at lower watts since I really don't need the extra volume as much as I do the reliability and longevity of my amps! Take care Uncle Doug!

    That was a botched power cord install you found, Unc. The blue is neutral, brown hot. So the hot side was fused and looks like the neutral originally went in and out of the two outlet lugs, so the amp wouldn't ever turn on unless something was plugged in to that outlet, and being in series with the neutral, whatever was plugged in wound up being a current limiter. After the fire, someone then moved the neutral to the same lug.

It was a complete joy to experience the process in diagnosing the mistakes that were made, and explaining your detailed flow chart of the modality you employ in the step-by-step approach to repair the circuit by compartmentalized order. The mains cable is from a European source. The brown is Live/Hot and the Blue is neutral return. Green/yellow is the earth. Europe, UK and surrounding area usually run from 220v AC 50Hz.
    Thank you for your really valuable videos. I have spent many hours watching with a great deal of fascination. I do the same kind of work here on a much smaller scale, in the UK and likewise, have found a great many short cuts other 'technicians' have cobbled together to try and make things work. Consequences can be really significant.

    At 4:35, using the transformer mounting bolts as ground points for the artificial heater-winding centertap, the main AC winding centertap, the negative-bias supply 😮😮, and the power-cord earth ground, is a very very bad idea. It is best to solder those connections directly to the chassis. The vibration from shipping and transporting the amp, and actually playing it through a 4 speaker cabinet, plus the mass of the transformer, is a recipe for shaking those nuts loose on the bolts even though they have integral star washers. Galvanic corrosion from the different metals involved is another possibility.

      The star washer isn't there to secure the nut. It is there to cut into the chassis to ensure a good electrical connection.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EJP286CRSKW , A star washer underneath the nut, sitting on top of the solder terminal, does nothing to bite into the chassis. The solder terminal(s) sometimes have a tooth washer built in but the terminals are often too soft to really bite into the chassis through the plating and surface corrosion, and anyway don't do much to prevent the nut from loosening. If you use a separate star washer on top of the terminal with integral teeth, or a Keps nut with integral star washer, you can't tighten it reliably excuse the terminal will spin along with the nut and toothed/star washer on top of it.
      This stuff all loosens over time; I've been working on audio electronics since the 1960's. Anyway, current electrical codes mandate a separate earth ground attachment. Don't use the tranny bolts for any of this!

    Oh, just one more thing (I'm in Columbo mode😊): I suggest you put a jumper wire between the input terminal of the bias pot (where the negative voltage enters from the bias supply) and the wiper terminal. This will ensure that you do not lose negative bias completely to the output stage if the wiper connection becomes intermittent inside the pot; The negative bias would rise fairly significantly and the output tubes would be running a little bit cold, but they wouldn't go into thermal runaway and turn cherry red and self destruct, as they would if the wiper of the bias pot as factory-wired were to lift and the bias voltage to the output stage was completely lost.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@UncleDoug , When you're working on a nearly 60 year old amplifier, it's always smart to ask "what would happen if this critical part failed?" If a volume or tone control potentiometer becomes intermittent or fails, it's no big deal, but if that bias pot fails, you get blown tubes and maybe blown transformers. With that jumper wire added, however, the entire bias pot element, wiper, resistor or ground connection could fail and yet the only thing that would happen is the full negative bias supply would go right to the output tube grids and put the amp into the cut-off region where almost no plate current would flow. (and PS, Make sure the bias potentiometer is bolted down securely to a clean, non-oxidized chassis or you could indeed lose that voltage-divider reference ground; which is why I prefer to solder the resistor to the chassis instead of to the back of the pot).

    Gotta love the mullards! Working on hammonds as i do i always check the junked organs and found a trove of Mullards and vintage RCA tubes, amperex bugle boys, those Hammonds always were stocked well, amd most of them were very mild voltages, so they'll still rock your guitar amp after 50+ years in a Hammond!

    Hi, Uncle Doug - Great video, I just want to bring up one cautionary issue in that you are utilizing that Elenco 440 substitution box you received from a viewer on an earlier video. I wanted to point out that this cap box is made from cheap 50V & 100V caps of which after a few years they are finally admitting that in their advertisements, 100V max. Could be quite a bang for people seeing this video and figuring " you use that box all the time, I need to buy one." You may want to put a disclaimer somewhere. Don't want anybody dialing in a corner frequency on an interstage dc block. 😉 Again, always enjoy the videos!

    That amp was sure horribly botched and bastardized. It's good that you were able to make it do what it needs to do. No more deflagrations around the input wiring!
    Sounds great there at the end, at least as far as the audio from TH-cam can convey it.

    I may never have to repair amps, but the information in your videos is invaluable in helping the lay person understand how an amplifier works and avoid costly repairs down the line. Having said that, your instructions on how to replace two prong cords for the much safer 3 prong variety has helped me to repair and upgrade an old Big Muff Deluxe that had a nasty broken 2 prong cord. Your wall voltage study is important for everyone with vintage amps to see. The original amps were based upon wall voltage in the 115 - 117vac average. Todays USA line voltage is usually over 120vac. At my place it runs 123-125vac. The difference is multiplied by the power transformer by a factor of about 4, so the internal voltages will be increased by roughly four times the difference between the designed for A/C and the actual. While it doesn’t seem much offhand, the working difference between a plate voltage of 440vdc and 485vdc is readily apparent in terms of tone and heat. Pays to employ some form of buck transformer upstream of the amp to reduce the line voltage back into the designed for range.

    Disconnecting the centre tap for the heaters and installing a pair of 100ohm 1/2W *fusible* resistors has two advantages: lowest levels of heater induced hum and a level of protection for the power transformer (in this case an irreplaceable vintage Schumacher inside a highly valuable amp). Regarding the customer's complaint about the tremolo not only being too fast but also taking too much time to kick in: Fender replaced the 25uF bypass capacitor closest to the phase inverter by a 4,7/5 uF value in later revisions. This can be seen in the Twin AA769 and later revisions, which allowed for the tremolo to kick in much quicker when enabled. Some modifications during the Silverface era may have been questionable but in this case it was a definite improvement.

    • @ScottyBrockway
      @ScottyBrockway ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, a couple resistors is cheaper to replace than a burnt transformer. It's an easy thing to do and prevents heater shorts from burning it up.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  ปีที่แล้ว

      Could you be more specific about the location of the 25uf bypass cap that is to be replaced?

    • @sarcophagist4097
      @sarcophagist4097 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UncleDoug It's located in V5b (the triode in the tremolo circuit that uses a 100K resistor). An example of a 5uF bypass capacitor can be found on the schematic and layout diagram of the Twin Reverb AA769.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sarcophagist4097 Thanks. I was thrown off by the phrase "closest to the phase inverter". Have you ever done a side-by-side comparison to verify the efficacy of this CBPC change?
