My husband and I used to live in Rapid City, SD a few years ago. We would often take long drives thru the Black Hills National Forest. This is such a beautiful place and it never fails to impress. 😊
Beautiful drive, Jim! Great you were able to get off the Interstate for this great drive. The Black Hills are so different from the rest of South Dakota! I say that having lived in Sioux Falls for 14 years and making many trips across I-90 and through the Hills.
Went to Mt Rushmore today, also Hillcity, and Keystone, we played Firefall just like you did when we left the Mt Rushmore parking lot, love this video been watching it for several years hoping to get here and we finally did, yeeeehaaa, thanks for the video
Here on the fifth anniversary of the upload! Strange coincidence. Beautiful scenery, wish I could make it up there some time. I'm guessing the three and a half minutes where the audio cuts out (starting right after the intermission) is something TH-cam did, possibly for copyright? It's one song long.
Thanks, yeah that's a youtube/copyright issue which is odd considering all the songs are from the same group and copyright owners but it is what it is I suppose. It's a place well worth seeing, hope you get there someday.
I was in that area about a week after you were there. After we left Mt. Rushmore we traveled south on U.S. 385 through Custer and into Nebraska. Undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous drives I had ever been on.
This was great. *Especially* loved your beginning freeze frame of the faces of Mt. Rushmore. Keystone looks quite neat too. These are some very nice, leisurely drives through the Black Hills...must get out there sometime. Sorry you had to deal with the rolling chicane (a word I learned from you, lol)...dunno how some people fail to understand how courteous it is to let faster drivers move on by. Awesome video!
Thanks, oh man I normally would have jumped in front of that car, that's what I get for chilling :) Glad you liked the video and I'm sure you'll enjoy the area when you get the chance to get out there.
Thanks for this video! I recently did a road trip from Colorado Springs to Mount Rushmore. The wooden bridge was amazing but I failed to get pics of it. Another beautiful site, aside from the memorial is Horse Thief Lake. I was hoping to get another glimpse of that too! Thanks for always making the best road trip videos!
I love this video. I want so bad to go back to the Black Hills again. So much has changed. I was there in 87 and 89 when my buddy was in the service at Ellsworth AFB. I remember McDonalds was the end of Rapid City on Hwy 16. There was nothing going up the hill going out of town and today it's fully developed. Thanks for the great videos Jim. Wish I could travel as much as you do.
I am following your saga (number 16) from the beginning to the end. beautiful videos, beautiful scenery. Worth watching all these videos. keep on fighting
Another great video!!! Loved the music, and nice to see some sunshine, as Houston is getting 10-12 inches of rain dumped on it right now. Anyway, great video!!!! Can't wait for the next one!!!!
You go to places many of which I've seen before in happier times, and you play music that I grew up with. These vids hit real close to home for me. Thank you.
How lucky I was, that I got to stay in this Beautiful Little Rapid City for 2 and a half years of my life. Whenever I got a chance I got out for a drive in this highways holding a cup of Starbucks coffee! I miss you so much Rapid City!
I love your videos and I especially appreciate the music you pick for them. I usually like the natural sounds with driving videos, but I can tell you take time to pick these songs. Kudos!!👍🏽
It looks like a lovely trip with exceptional scenery and the Mt. Rushmore monument. I'd love to see the Crazy Horse monument, too. However, I am averse to winding roads, having driven many of them in my city and I don't like them. As I've previously stated, you're an excellent driver. I can't take in the sites and drive too -- I'd be all over the road and end up in a ditch. I love watching your videos.
@@Freewayjim You're welcome, and I wish I were not such an on-edge driver, haha. I'm always looking for other drivers to make mistakes and that is definitely my weakness. I'm always happy to let the person I'm traveling with to take the wheel.
Wonderful drive as I anticipated, your notation at (13:42), wasn't quite accurate, it was amazing, modern technology is phenomenal and you have the state of the art camera that captures the scenery in (HD), which makes me feel like I'm riding in the passenger seat with you! I really enjoyed your soundtrack selection (Firefall), Sensational video Jim!
I've seen a lot of pictures of Mt Rushmore, but I don't think that will happen, due to my wife's work schedule, I don't see that coming to fulfillment, but I am glad you where able to make that journey and video the experience for us to see!!
Beautiful! I often wonder if the people who live in those lovely places, like the Black Hills area, appreciate how gorgeous their scenery is or do they just kind of get used to it and take it for granted.
It would be close to an hour long, not sync well with any music and put people to sleep at normal speed, thanks for watching, glad you had fond memories of the drive, it was my first time and I enjoyed it..
I love that part of the country. The Black Hills/Bad Lands area is some of the best motorcycle touring roads you'll find anywhere. I go to the Sturgis Rally (ya I'm one of those) every couple of years and it seems really strange to see all of these places without large packs of bikes everywhere. This is one of your best videos Jim and I really want to say thanks for posting.
Very nice ride! I have always wanted to see and visit Mt. Rushmore as it is on my bucket-list of monuments I want to visit in my lifetime- very nice ride! Very awesome soundtrack too! It's always good to see areas I want to see- plus to see the roads around those areas too- awesome vid- looking forward to seeing Wyoming next!
I feel your pain. I got stuck behind a car like that going down California Highway 1. It was still a pretty drive but getting stuck behind a car like that was extremely annoying.
In Hill City, there is a left turn that takes you to Spearfish. I took that road and all of a sudden there was a sign that said "pavement ends". Nothing is marked. It turned out to be OK and the gravel ran for about 5 or so miles. The pavement started again and I was able to pick up the interstate again in Spearfish. Very scenic area.
You should take the freeway loop around Sioux Falls (I-29/I-90/I-229). They're going to begin reconfiguring a few of the exits over the next five years including (but not limited to) the I-29/I-90 junction and I believe the I-90/I-229 junction as well so things will be different a few years from now on that freeway loop!
Been looking forward to this one, Jim (I actually look forward to every one of your videos). We were there just a month ago as well. So scenic, the Black hills!
On left one of last hills on US-16 East before dropping into Rapid City there was a nightly country/bluegrass show with chuckwagon dinner. A lot of fun!!
I know this is probably silly but I find it interesting how they use the same style of traffic lights as they do in Chicago & IL between North Dakota & Minnesota. I think the ones in Wisconsin are different and resemble much like they do in New Mexico. Yet North Dakota seems to be the transitioning point as they have some with the flashing left turn arrows as they mainly use in Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Idaho... We're getting them too in Atlanta. I really wish Atlanta had more distinct traffic signals like you find in Chicago, Texas, where there are several signals facing your right of way all mounted on real gantries or poles instead of those suspended cables. Anyway nice video!
Seem to lose a lot of elevation going from Rushmore to Rapid City. It's also the first time I've seen a runaway truck ramp on something other than a full freeway, at least on a video form.
Hey, I'm just wondering if you'll buy a 4k recorder (not now, just in 1-2 years maybe), since 4k resolution would give an *awesome* view of the street, environment etc.. Of course, files would be gigantic, but the outcome is worth it :P Btw I really like how you add background information about the local area, it makes the video not so blank, and it's always nice to learn something new! :)
Hello Jim, still and always will be a HUGE fan of ALL of your videos And if I may just wanted to ask you a quick question in regards of how you film your videos from inside of your vehicle, if correct you said that you do use a 3-legged tripod right, and if so, what is your secret to being able to kept that tripod upright and not having it maybe tip over when you go around turns and howdo you always keep the picture so steady??? Thank you so very much
Thanks Andrew, two things, i have a brick with a hole that I use to stabilize the front leg and I secure the back legs by moving the power seat up enough to where it's snug and doesn't move. Now having a tripod with free-flowing legs as opposed to one with a brace across the lower part of the legs is a must because that way you can place the legs wherever you need to get the best balance and stabilization.
Thank you Jim, would have never thought about using a brick for that kind of purpose, so with the seats your saying that yu move them until they are pretty much up against the legs of the tripod right? You dont happen to have a picture by chance just so I could actually see what the setup actually looks like when you have everything setup inside your vehicle,?? Thanks again
Wow, that wooden arch bridge. 8:29. Keystone Wye Bridges. And that's a wooden girder bridge underneath. Constructed in 1968, in 'fair' condition today.

Another great video, Jim. I do like how your music always seems to blend so smoothly into the scenery. Am I crazy for thinking that driving into Hill City looked almost exactly like taking Route 66 into Williams, AZ?
It’s amazing how South Dakota goes from the most boring, desolate combination of farmland and nothingness in the eastern half of the state to this mountain beauty out west. Unfortunately for school I lived in the “crap” part of SD, near Sioux Falls, and only got to experience this once. Happy to live in Utah now, where I can see mountains every day!
Jim, FYI, They muted Cinderella from Fire Fall on 16-13 South Dakota video, just after intermission @ 9:45. That's a Great Ride Along, sure would be nice if you could fix it? Wishing you and yours well! Thank you for all you do! Don't see why these things happen, this is one of my favorites, I would think others too.

Yeah, I HATE those people too!!! They drive me crazy. I was just stuck behind such a slowpoke on the way home from work today. Frankly, I feel like they deserve to be tailgated.
Wow, this area is so beautiful.....I could live there if the winter wasn't so brutal. And hahahahahaha to the comments about the little black Chevy .... it made me Lol.
There was one song that was causing the whole video to be blocked (same artist and music company, makes no sense at all) and there was an option to "mute" that song, so I did and the video came back as a result.

Yeah, that seemed to be a struggle for them.
I can only imagine how irritating it must've been driving behind that black chevy!

I was in this area last in the mid 90s. Interesting to see how it's changed.
Damn, I wish i could drive on these beautiful roads, scenery is amazing too. Great video though ;)

7:10 my favorite song
Ole head music lollll
This place was magical to me!
Jim, I don't know if anyone commented recently, but the song "Cinderella" (around 9:58) is gone. Silent until 13:23.
Eh, that's too bad, there's nothing I can do short of redoing the whole video, unfortunately.
Wow, that wooden arch bridge. 8:29. Keystone Wye Bridges. And that's a wooden girder bridge underneath. Constructed in 1968, in 'fair' condition today.
A wonderful trip: thanks for loading

What I'd like to see happen is for you to put together a compilation of all the songs you've used in your videos. That would be cool!
Sorry, that's probably not going to happen, too time consuming.
if i am not mistaken, in the past year at least (maybe longer) you seem to use what i think might be Apple Motion graphics for your annotations and titles. thats really cool. i am in high school and have been learning how to use that in my video production class. nice!
I have Motion but don't really have a handle on it, I just do what I can within Final Cut Pro X for things, but thank you just the same..
very nice. I hear that Mount Rushmore originally was supposed to include the full bodies of the presidents.
Thank you, could have been, I have not researched it that deeply.
+Freewayjim it was supposed to but they didn't include the bodies maybe they will add them
Trans Canada Phil, yes, that was the plan. But they realized the rock was way too fragile to do the full bodies, plus I believe the proportions wouldn't have been right. Nice. Beautiful mountain range I didn't know existed. Always thought Mt Rushmore was in the Rockies...
Thanks!
That was very scenic until you got to Rapid City. Nice choice of music too.
US 16: I haven't seen that shield in a long time. I remember way back when today's MN 16 was US 16 in SE Minnesota.
I had hoped to visit "presidents" this year but plans didn't work out. Thank you for sharing what I would have otherwise missed.
Your welcome, hope you get there eventually.
Really excited to finally go east and Mt Rushmore is definely a place to stop.
Once again, great scenery and music, but some of those roads look like they could be scary to drive, especially at night.
Thanks, FWIW the roads were in great condition.
Another great video, Jim. I do like how your music always seems to blend so smoothly into the scenery. Am I crazy for thinking that driving into Hill City looked almost exactly like taking Route 66 into Williams, AZ?

Your point?
+Freewayjim, Me is just saying. They were a Slow driver in the Video because they were probably unfamiliar with the Roads. That is all.

I had to mute the song in question to get it back, it's better than nothing.
Muy hermoso video, los lugares son espectaculares, sigue asi haciendo video ..desde BUENOS AIRES ARGENTINA..un gran saludo..!!

That happened to me when i was going down California Highway 1 once. It really does make the trip painful regardless of how beautiful the scenery is.
Awesome video!
Thank you!
Wow, this area is so beautiful.....I could live there if the winter wasn't so brutal. And hahahahahaha to the comments about the little black Chevy .... it made me Lol.
LOL, glad you enjoyed it, it's an interesting area but yeah, I'm sure winter is pretty bad there.
This Video is Back! Congrats 🎊🎉 but How?
There was one song that was causing the whole video to be blocked (same artist and music company, makes no sense at all) and there was an option to "mute" that song, so I did and the video came back as a result.
the pause at 1:22 was so perfect
Thanks

Went there in August on solar eclipse trip. Did you make it to Custer State Park and the Needles Highway?
No we did not, just Mt. Rushmore then it was back on I-90 West.
That was some awesome country thanks
