its probably worth mentioning this isnt actually the singer for Massive Attack, this singer is actually Elizabeth Fraser from another great band "Cocteau Twins".
The singer used to be with Cocteau Twins ('80s, '90s darkwave, new wave Gothic post-punk/alt rock band). Then went on to Massive Attack in the '90s, '00s. This is trip-hop which is popular genre since the '90s to current times. It's like chill psychedelic jazzy hip hop, alt rock. Bands like Portishead, Sneaker, Lana Del Rey, PJ Harvey, FKA Twigs, Morcheeba, etc. Lot of Bjorks music is trip hop sounds, too. 🎶 Also Royksopp, Lorde, Kate Bush, etc has some influences. Lot of rappers have ventured on to trip-hop influences, too.
I'm a real fan of the 70's, you know, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, Genesis with Peter Gabriel in the 70's... And the trip hop gave me the same feeling after, Massive Attack, Morcheeba... They gave the same feeling in another way... I love that song, and the singer also sang for Morcheeba
Literally every song on this album is a banger; Cocteau Twins is also a band that hasn't graced your channel yet, and if you love unique Scottish singing voices, look no further.
@@shanebrown4146 Depends if we wanna introduce them to goth Twins first (start with Treasure stuff, Ivo, Lorelei, Aloysius) or start them with Carolyns Fingers (their first mainstream hit) and move into Vegas stuff (Cherry, Iceblink, Heaven), and beyond (Bluebeard, Tishbite).
Trip hop is such a great rabbit hole to go down. Nobody reacts to the criminally underrated Morcheeba. The whole of the Bristol and south west sound just keeps giving and giving. One of my favourite bands The Heavy are from there
Mezzanine is one of the best albums made, I'd put it up there with some of the best classic rock. Very creative, lot's of variety and very influential. You MUST hear more especially from this album.
I received this as a cassette back in the 90s with my copy of Alternative Press magazine. I'm a huge, huge fan of metal, but this band really hit the spot for me. Keep listening to trip-hop it grows on you, so many layers.
A lot of people think that the member of this band, known as “3D”, is actually (if not, heavily inspired) the graffiti artist Banksy. Also, he’s the inspiration for 2D from the Gorillaz
Loved this song back then, more recently discovered that this song is great for breath exercises when your ribs are broken or bruised and you need to breathe deeply despite the pain.
Watch the official video for this song, it's one of the most beautiful and moving videos ever made. Made in the 90s when some artists where still creating thoughtful and artistic videos!
It's not just the vocals. With such minimalist production and instrumentation, the most subtle changes go a long way to create a flowing hypnotic vibe.
This song is so sad. When she recorded her vocals she had just learned that morning that her ex bf whom the song is about and who she loved dearly had died of an accidental drowning. He was an amazing singer too. You should check him out. Jeff Buckley - Grace (title track) is a great place to start.
You gotta do Angel. You've probably heard it before, but maybe not known it was Massive Attack. They make such beautiful music. There's such depth to their instrumentation that the songs feel full, deep and timeless. Harmonies, melodies and rhythm off the charts. You'll see. Looking forward to the next one!
The name 'Massive Attack' in this case refers to a slang term for a large gang/crew. It's also slang for a rave. They're a trip-hop band. You should check out another of their hits 'Unfinished Sympathy'. Watch the video and then immediately after watch the video of The Verve's 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' and after that the video for Fat Les's 'Vinderloo'. If you're wondering why I'll just say there's a running theme in all three.🙂 Also check out another Bristol based trip-hop group 'Portishead'. You can't go wrong with anything from their award winning album 'Dummy' but 'Glory Box' or 'Mysterons' would be a good place to start. White Town's 'Your Woman' and Saint Etienne's 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' are other great songs from this era although they have a somewhat different sound.

Elizabeth Fraser is amazing, both with the Cocteau Twins (check out Lorelei or Pandora) and This Mortal Coil (Song of the Siren). In many cases it is not what she is actually saying but how she uses her voice as an instrument that is the most interesting part. You usually can't go wrong with Massive Attack songs but some of my faves are "Protection", "Safe from Harm" "Five Man Army' and "Unfinished Symphony"

Also recommend that you guys check on The Kelly Family, a European group of siblings who sing with the most beautiful, heavenly voices. I sent you super chat about The Kelly Family on your last live stream but I think I fell asleep before it was read.
Love this song. There's also a great cover version by José González, which was used excellently in The Last Dance (Chicago Bulls Docuseries, which was amazing)
Was waiting for someone to bring up the House theme. It is this song. I think they used another one in the series, or maybe just a different part of the song.
Ok context, in the UK, a massive is a group of people (gang). This group changes vocal artists every song. Listen to more and you'll see how varied they are both in vocals and intensity

I’m with Brad on this one. A little is a lot with these vocals and the beat. Great song.
"Angel" by Massive Attack is a banger, check it out guys! Also "Paradise Circus"
Thanks for playing Massive Attack. Now I have to subscribe. Love you guys.
its probably worth mentioning this isnt actually the singer for Massive Attack, this singer is actually Elizabeth Fraser from another great band "Cocteau Twins".
With Trip hop you can't expect explosions, that is the essence of trip hop
A 'massive' song when it originally dropped. Love the trip hop :)
Seeing as tonight is Trip Hop night (apparently) try Portishead - Glory Box. Brad would be all over it
Please do more Massive Attack they're sooooooo good when you delve into them. And of course, check out more from Portishead ✌️
did they check out portishead, I must have missed it
@@Minuz1 th-cam.com/video/S-40kCgGjNQ/w-d-xo.html yes the live version of Roads ✌️
Don't forget Morcheeba, please
The synchronized swaying was very much the vibe of this.
If you two are digging this, keep going with the trip-hop suggestions people have mentioned.
"I was expecting a massive attack, but it's like a little tickle." Oh my goodness, that was funny.
A more recent song by Massive Attack that hits a bit differently is "The Spoils". I find it quite beautiful and emotionally deep.
Vocals by the wonderful Hope Sandoval.
Massive attack is one of my all time favorites. Go down the rabbit hole. You will not be disappointed.
Try unfinished sympathy next. You will love it. Greetz from Belgium.
1:00 Brad: This sounds like my precious Alanis!
(I first heard this as the theme to House.)
Really? This is about Jeff Buckley? That’s crazy.
Wow….had no idea…
This song was the theme song for a long running show on FOX called House. It was a brilliant show until it overstayed it's welcome as most shows do.
Hard agree. It definitely qualifies as heavy, so I think Lex will like it more.
Hard agree. It definitely qualifies as heavy, so I think Lex will like it more.
This is a chilling in the sun with a cocktail track!
Massive Attack, Mezzanine is one of the top 10 albums of all time. Trip Hop is a vibe. Bands like this and Portishead. Many babies made.
If you're wondering why I'll just say there's a running theme in all three.🙂
Also check out another Bristol based trip-hop group 'Portishead'.
The vocals on this song were provided by Elizabeth Fraser. She has an absolutely stunning voice, which is given free rein on "Song to the siren". th-cam.com/video/HFWKJ2FUiAQ/w-d-xo.html
She wrote the lyrics after hearing of the death of her friend Jeff Buckley - one of many artists who covered Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".
@@peckish_tooth6515 lyrics were already written, she was recording the vocals when she knew about Jeff's death. She dedicated the song to him tho, that's true
The instrumental of this is used in some commercials and TV suspense dramas. US dramas House M.D and Prison Break used the instrumental track a lot.
Massive Attack are a great act, with so many amazing tracks, but the one you absolutely have to listen to is Protection, featuring Tracy Thorn from Everything But The Girl. It's one of the best songs ever recorded imo
Totally agreed. An extraordinary song.
And not to mention the incredible music video which plays with your mind...I still have no idea how they managed to film that 😬
I love that brad likes this softer vibe and lex loves the heaviest songs lol
Elizabeth Fraser is amazing, both with the Cocteau Twins (check out Lorelei or Pandora) and This Mortal Coil (Song of the Siren). In many cases it is not what she is actually saying but how she uses her voice as an instrument that is the most interesting part. Massive Attack has many great songs as well and used many different guest vocalist in their songs. You usually can't go wrong with Massive Attack songs but some of my faves are "Protection", "Safe from Harm" "Five Man Army' and "Unfinished Symphony"
A cover of this song was used on The Last Dance basketball documentary. When the Bulls win the title on Father's Day. It's a very moving song, combined with the original video, it's a true work of art. Absolutely beautiful.
It's also the theme song for House MD
That's Liz Frazier from the Cocteau Twins on vocals, one of my favorite 90's groups. Also recommend that you guys check on The Kelly Family, a European group of siblings who sing with the most beautiful, heavenly voices. I sent you super chat about The Kelly Family on your last live stream but I think I fell asleep before it was read.
She sang the lament for Gandalf in Lorien in “The fellowship of the Ring”.
Cocteau Twins have lots of great songs. Blood Bitch is a great one.
Oh god I forgot about Kelly family. Why would you do this to me
@@Tanatie Never forget about the Kelly Family!!!
Singer is Liz Fraser from Cocteau twins... band Ive been listening to since college in the 90s.
Love this song. There's also a great cover version by José González, which was used excellently in The Last Dance (Chicago Bulls Docuseries, which was amazing)
The Jose Gonzales cover really is awesome 👏
Aurora’s cover is outstanding….If you haven’t heard it, check it out.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 wow don’t know this at all thanks 🙏
Angel, Protection, and so many more...love MA
Never heard much from these guys, but this song always reminds me of the intro for House, MD. Great series and a great intro tune.
I think the instrumental of this song IS the theme of the House intro.
Was waiting for someone to bring up the House theme. It is this song. I think they used another one in the series, or maybe just a different part of the song.
This is a song you listen to in a warm bath with your eyes closed.
Also check out "live with me", "protection" and "unfinished sympathy" by them. All killer songs.
Ok context, in the UK, a massive is a group of people (gang). This group changes vocal artists every song. Listen to more and you'll see how varied they are both in vocals and intensity
You need to listen Risingson, Angel, Daydreaming, Protection, and other songs of Massive Attack, they are great
I love this entire album, it was such a gift to see them perform at the Hollywood, Palladium a few years ago.
I swear you guys are just going through my TH-cam history. Such a special song. Check out Burial - Foster care or Archangel
Burial!
Nice mention...Stolen Dog is one of my favorite songs.
I hope they get to hear Boards Of Canada and Four Tet
Ahhh Trip Hop, another U.K. 90’s genre 🖤
If you want Massive Attack with more of an edge, try listening to "Dissolved Girl", same album, brilliant!
Bought the album because this song was in The Matrix, but not on The Matrix’s soundtrack. Amazing song (as were all the songs on that album).
24 years later............now i know what the words actually are... never was all that invested in figuring them out........that is........UNTIL BRAD AND LEX CAME ALONG!! LOLOL
ASMR before ASMR existed. Of course you should explore more trip-hop, Zero 7, Portishead, Theivery Corporation, etc... What I'd just recommend in general, is go through the whole sound track of the movie "Garden State". It's a great collection of mostly 90s tunes, and would be a great jumping off point in various directions. And also Porthead's live NYC Roseland performance, which is awesome.
Makes me so happy to hear you mention Zero 7 they are such an incredible band and sooo underrated
A true classic tune. Jose Gonzales done a really great cover of this also
Aurora's cover of Teardrop is amazing too. She's an artist you guys should also be diving into. Incredible voice, she gives me chills every time I listen to her
Yeah... the Aurora one is just... unreal.
brad would probably like portishead. (i'd recommend starting with "nobody loves me like you"
Massive Attack is great. Awesome to see them on the channel too. Black Milk, Dissolved Girl and Angel are some other fantastic songs by them. 🙂
And now it's time for a little trip hop genre... next Unfinished Sympathy, Angel, Safe From Harm, Protection, Karmacoma...
