Probably because they flat out didn't know. Education systems are a joke. I wasn't even taught this as a teen driver. Personally, I hated driving because I knew I wasn't ready, but they still gave me a license. I practically had to teach myself everything I know today.
All states should make this law...you run past a bus with lights...minimum 1000 fine and immediate license revoked!!! I dont even have kids and this pisses me off
The reason fines never work is because they aren't progressive. The fine should not be a set amount. If you make $200,000 a year, a $1,000 fine isn't going to hurt you at all.

Unfortunately, she only got 4 years in prison, 3 years on house arrest, and a 10-year license suspension. Got off way too easy for killing 3 children. She also had the audacity to appeal which was denied.
While I understand citations via camera has been deemed “unconstitutional due to invasion of privacy” at stop lights, this is a completely different scenario. This isn’t about simply running a red light, speeding and other basic traffic violations. This is about common knowledge knowing damn well children are getting off the bus and walking directly into traffic. Some kids have to walk in front of the bus as their home isn’t on the same side as the door. Some kids are very young and have not developed the concept to always look for oncoming vehicles. I fully support more action taken to catch these drivers and not simply send a ticket, but to have more aggressive charges as I feel like more people wouldn’t want to risk catching a case. I personally knew someone who almost lost their 1st grader due to a driver in a hurry, intentionally sped by and passed the bus and hitting this child. The boy was thrown into the air, suffered a bad head injury and endured many broken bones but thankfully did not pass away. I’ve witnessed many drivers ignoring a bus stopping to unload children but, again, thankfully no child was hurt.
i agree, we can make an exception for this. i wish my bus had cameras, one that actually were quality and could catch the license plate. i also wish all my kids paid better attention -- it's actually my younger ones that follow these rules better simply because most of them are eager to please the authority figure. i say that, but my elementary students are english second language kids whose upbringing tends to be better than, ah, certain others. our routes are designed to pick up on the resident side as much as possible. they're also made by computers, so there's always something left to be desired in real life, so there's always some tweaking that needs to happen.
I've stopped for a school bus and people were literally going around me they DO. NOT. CARE. its sickening... it's like would you rather be late to work or kill a kid crossing the road..
I started putting my car over the line to keep people behind me from passing while stopped behind busses. I would much rather be rear ended than to watch a helpless child be hurt/killed from a careless driver.
I've stopped in the middle of both lanes behind a bus to make sure no one passed. People have tried passing me. They gotta hit me before those kids tho
While that sounds good in theory, it's a bad decision. Cause now you are putting the driver and passengers at risk, and the one think USA is really well known for its suing for all the dumbest things. Regardless if it was their fault or not, and just on legal expenses alone, that would be too costly for the schools.

One of my friends, who never got their driver's license nor has any interest in getting one, knows that if a bus is stopped with the signs out then you need to stop.
My bus driver did that too. He would take those notices to police, and one my friend’s dad was the driver who passed (even though his son rode the bus everyday, and he knew it was dangerous since it was a spot where most kids got off the bus) and he later got a ticket for it.
I've almost been hit multiple times. Happened almost everyday my 8th grade year. Now going into 10th, I'm terrified of buses. I'm so happy my freshman year that my bus driver gets off the bus and will scream and yell at drivers for this BS.
Sometimes it’s longer, it really depends how long it takes for kids to get on or off the bus, in some states you have to wait for the bus to resume motion so it could be 1 to 2 minutes in some cases. I don’t illegally pass stopped school buses and don’t think it’s ok to do so but for me I would be annoyed if I had to stop because I wouldn’t want to have stop from going 35 to 40 (or however fast I’m going) when I’m not even in the intersection, especially if I’m on the other side on a road with 4 or more lanes
@@thevarietykid686 I know it can be longer, I wasn't using 5 seconds as the exact time limit for all bus stops like that. My point is that there's no reason for you to be passing a bus like that especially when they have their sign up. From what I know most buses have a set schedule so most people tend to know roughly when a bus is going to be somewhere. So I feel like you should either leave earlier or look for another way around. Many years ago, I was driving a fully loaded 3/4 ton truck down a VERY steep hill. I was geared down and only going about 25 mph. I came around the corner and just KNEW the bus was going to stop and let kids off. Sure enough, the sign came out and lights started flashing. This was WAY before anti-lock brakes and all four wheels were locked was I tried to stop and laid on the horn. I remember being so scared I would hit a kid. I was looking for where to put the truck (the ditch was starting to look very good) when the driver retracted the sign and waved me through. I stopped anyway, with about 10 feet to spare. And then waited for the kids to cross. The driver yelled through he window "Nice stop. That had both of us cringing...". I still cannot believe how many people just do not care. Drivers are trained to spot these conditions and hold the kids back. They have a tough job, we do not have to make it more difficult. This driver was on top of things. Totally awesome.
Iv seen a video of a school in New York and the kids were getting off the bus to go into school, and this is like an elementary school as well, and the driver just couldn't wait so he drove up on the sidewalk where to kids were walking into school and almost hit a few of em as well. At least you laid on the horn to give warning, so the driver knew you were coming and likely were having trouble. That's more then I can say for the 4 times I've nearly been hit and run over.
Well if you just knew the bus driver was going to stop you should have listened to your gut and started slowing down right then and there. Glad everyone was okay.

It won't really stop it though as the person driving may not be the owner. Impounding the car though is a good idea. If the owner wasn't the driver then they will be pissed at whoever borrowed the car. It's the same for red light cameras, they only capture the tag and not who is driving.

The question is best directed at people operating 3,000 pound machines. "Were you ever taught to watch out for young kids at a bus with a stop sign and flashing lights?" I swear, pedestrian blaming in America is sickening.
@@RafTheDude well, I'm not in the USA - I'm from the UK. In this country, we have what's known as the "Green Cross Code". It's a set of instructions that children are generally taught at a very young age for how to cross the road safely. I was 6 when I was taught how to cross the road using this method. I was given an audio cassette by my mother containing a "story" of a boy who was very carefree about crossing the road, and very nearly ends up being hit by a passing car. When I was around either 14 or 15, I irresponsibly (though in my defence without clarity) crossed the road in front of a bus I'd just gotten off. The next thing I knew, there was the front end of a silver Honda Accord charging right at me. I think I ended up with my hands on the bonnet - that's how close it was. From that point on, I said to myself "Right. I'm going to cross BEHIND the bus from now on." That's never changed. At no time did it ever ONCE cross my mind, that the driver was in any way at fault for his (or her - I've always assumed it was a man) actions. To have expectations of other road users is *extremely* foolish under any circumstances. One further other reason for this, is the possibility of manufacturer error of the vehicles themselves. A documentary on TH-cam called "The Quality Connection", produced by British Leyland, shows the types of accidents that can occur anywhere in the construction process if a car. Attributing "blame" for something entirely unpreventable is an element I suspect you're not really prepared to contend with. This is why being responsible for one's own actions is crucial. I imagine countries such as Japan are even more adherent to pedestrian responsibility. The idea of "blame" simply isn't something I concern myself with - genuine common sense on the other hand...
@@babidavi6910 Yes. To a circumstance-dependent extent. As I've explained in my latter, detailed reply in this thread, everyone bears their own responsibility for ensuring their own safety when it really comes down to it, and will be faced with a very unpleasant reality, if the type of scenario that I outlined above as just _one_ possible example of blamelessness on the part of everyone else, should ever occur. Therefore, this merits there being an inducement to exercise one's own common sense when crossing the road (even, not just "limiting" oneself to arbitrarily procedures such as the "Green Cross Code" (codes are for computers after all...)) The documentary (which was produced by automobile manufacturer British Leyland in the 1970s) that I referred to, is a VERY astute cautionary tale, of how completely innocent oversights can occur which can result in life changing - or even life _ending_ consequences, so it's therefore a very sensible attitude to adopt, that one uses that thing in between their ears when going about their affairs. The real world isn't designed to revolve itself around the safety of anyone and everyone, 24/7.

Many just don't care and start flipping at buses.

More significantly, have you taught *_others_* how to cross the road safely??
50 years... it's a long time to reflect and act positively on an experience...
@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 Why is it the responsibility of a young individual to remind an adult not to cross a stop sign and red flashing lights?
The question is best directed at people operating 3,000 pound machines.
"Were you ever taught to watch out for young kids at a bus with a stop sign and flashing lights?"
I swear, pedestrian blaming in America is sickening.
@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 You jump to blaming them for the incident?
@@babidavi6910 Yes. To a circumstance-dependent extent.
As I've explained in my latter, detailed reply in this thread, everyone bears their own responsibility for ensuring their own safety when it really comes down to it, and will be faced with a very unpleasant reality, if the type of scenario that I outlined above as just _one_ possible example of blamelessness on the part of everyone else, should ever occur.
Therefore, this merits there being an inducement to exercise one's own common sense when crossing the road (even, not just "limiting" oneself to arbitrarily procedures such as the "Green Cross Code" (codes are for computers after all...))
The documentary (which was produced by automobile manufacturer British Leyland in the 1970s) that I referred to, is a VERY astute cautionary tale, of how completely innocent oversights can occur which can result in life changing - or even life _ending_ consequences, so it's therefore a very sensible attitude to adopt, that one uses that thing in between their ears when going about their affairs.
The real world isn't designed to revolve itself around the safety of anyone and everyone, 24/7.
Should be a massive fine and if you almost hit a kid get some sort of attempted murder with deadly weapons charge. Because I mean if you do hit them then you get a manslaughter charge right?

Instead of points on their license. Give them 6 months in jail and a felony.
@@JETS5 6 millennia sound good
Watching three of your children being killed at once. I dont even have any and the thought of that makes me tear up
her fault for sending her kids to public school and not caring enough to home school them smh
@@bryanjk It's not surprising I find stupid people every once in a while.
As a student I'd watch just how often this happened even with recordings outside the bus no one can be held accountable unless a cop is there. Id be cussing people out the bus as my driver would always use the bus horn whenever people would pass it infuriated us
That camera idea is a pretty good idea but instead of a letter but an actual ticket should be sent.
This happens all the time in my neighborhood. My mom started dressing in those neon things cops wear, and she also called some cops to monitor my stop, since my stop was probably the most dangerous out of all of the bus stops. God bless the police officers who helped me out, I'll never forget!
I remember in middle school, this happened to one of the students. He was just about to walk down the steps when the bus driver grabbed him and blared the horn at the very impatient SOB that illegally passed the bus. She called it in, but nothing happened
nothing was done by police because they were out stealing money with Civil Forfeiture and don't have time to protect your kids.
That’s why I look both ways even if the stop thing is out
Spike strip deployed as the arm comes out. You want to run the stop sign? Pay for a new set of tires.
Brilliant.
Now suppose you *have* to carry on because you've got a hospital case on board, or you're fleeing for safety, or your car's developed a mechanical fault in the factory that's only just made itself apparent at that very moment??? (which will eventually happen).
How about this idea instead:
*TEACH YOUR CHILD TO CROSS THE ROAD SAFELY* 😱😱😱
Is *_that_* an astonishing revelation to you?
@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 First one you should call an ambulance, not try and put others in danger when you're not qualified to do that, third one that's why you should regularly have your car inspected and the popped tires will let you stop faster 😉. Anymore questions?
@@PliskinYT What I'm talking about has nothing to do with "routine maintenance" for a driver to undertake say - every week/250 miles/before a long journey, or anything like that (not that other motorists should be relied on to be responsible for other people - I'm sure even your driving test system in the USA discourages that! (perhaps even *_that's_* been cleverly diluted now?))
I'm talking about things that can go wrong anywhere at all at any stage within the manufacturing process of cars themselves, what can lead to it, and how things can be missed/misunderstood/miscommunicated etc.
There's an industry documentary on TH-cam about errors which can occur in the manufacturing process of cars.
It's called "The Quality Connection", which was produced by British Leyland, and is *extremely* eye opening and informative (BL were notorious for having problems when it came to producing reliable/good quality cars for its customers).
I'd advise it for anyone, anywhere, who take for granted that certain things "should" happen, when it comes to cars, and how things are "supposed" to be...
Similarly, satisfying a person by answering "they should call an ambulance", is about as equally disregarding of the variables that might need to be considered, given the prevailing circumstances.
There have been MANY occasions where souls have perished, because of WAITING for somebody to turn up with equipment designed to sustain life for a patient - perhaps epinephrine for an allergy that has just been discovered - such as a bee/wasp/hornet sting.
Or maybe heavy bleeding where torniquets have been used, but a transfusion of plasma may be required, because blood loss has been so severe and is critically needed.
Or an accidental decapitation of limbs/extremities such as fingers.
DR ABC and general/domestic first aid can only do so much after all...
The waiting times in the UK for an NHS ambulance, have been reported to be as long as *EIGHT* hours in the worst case that I've been made aware of - not soon enough to get a patient life-saving treatment they could do with.
Running somebody in a car to your nearest Accident & Emergency department less than 5 miles away, may be the faster, and crucially more understandable resort.
Other variables such as a working/present telephone/clear reception etc. may need to be taken into account as well.
Put very simply, learning/teaching a child to cross the road safely, effectively nullifies these day-to-day variables, which can render *_not_* teaching them to cross safely, redundant.
I was 6 when I learned how to cross using "The Green Cross Code", and I could have seen even back then, {that} this system of stopping a school bus awkwardly across the road, was flawed.
I didn't know *_how_* it could be dangerous - that came simply with experience of life.
But were I to have obeyed that code at the time, there would be little realistic chance of danger ever occuring when crossing from one side of the road, the other.
I saw children not even *_looking,_* when crossing the road in front of a stopped school bus (presumably because they assumed that everything was being taken care of by the bus driver...)
Those people are destined to end up like lemmings, or simply remain cocooned in cars for the rest of their lives, too frightened to step into a road unsupervised.
Very poor quality of life prospects.
