Drivers caught on camera ignoring school bus stop signs

  • Some local school districts have installed stop-arm cameras to identify drivers who put students at risk. At least 15 states have passed laws allowing for those cameras to lead to automatic citations. But Arizona is not one of them.

The reason fines never work is because they aren't progressive. The fine should not be a set amount. If you make $200,000 a year, a $1,000 fine isn't going to hurt you at all.

While I understand citations via camera has been deemed “unconstitutional due to invasion of privacy” at stop lights, this is a completely different scenario. This isn’t about simply running a red light, speeding and other basic traffic violations. This is about common knowledge knowing damn well children are getting off the bus and walking directly into traffic. Some kids have to walk in front of the bus as their home isn’t on the same side as the door. Some kids are very young and have not developed the concept to always look for oncoming vehicles. I fully support more action taken to catch these drivers and not simply send a ticket, but to have more aggressive charges as I feel like more people wouldn’t want to risk catching a case. I personally knew someone who almost lost their 1st grader due to a driver in a hurry, intentionally sped by and passed the bus and hitting this child. The boy was thrown into the air, suffered a bad head injury and endured many broken bones but thankfully did not pass away. I’ve witnessed many drivers ignoring a bus stopping to unload children but, again, thankfully no child was hurt.

i agree, we can make an exception for this. i wish my bus had cameras, one that actually were quality and could catch the license plate.
i also wish all my kids paid better attention -- it's actually my younger ones that follow these rules better simply because most of them are eager to please the authority figure. i say that, but my elementary students are english second language kids whose upbringing tends to be better than, ah, certain others.
our routes are designed to pick up on the resident side as much as possible. they're also made by computers, so there's always something left to be desired in real life, so there's always some tweaking that needs to happen.

The question is best directed at people operating 3,000 pound machines.

I swear, pedestrian blaming in America is sickening.

      @letsdiscussitoversometea8479 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@RafTheDude well, I'm not in the USA - I'm from the UK.
In this country, we have what's known as the "Green Cross Code".
It's a set of instructions that children are generally taught at a very young age for how to cross the road safely.
I was 6 when I was taught how to cross the road using this method.
I was given an audio cassette by my mother containing a "story" of a boy who was very carefree about crossing the road, and very nearly ends up being hit by a passing car.
When I was around either 14 or 15, I irresponsibly (though in my defence without clarity) crossed the road in front of a bus I'd just gotten off.
The next thing I knew, there was the front end of a silver Honda Accord charging right at me.
I think I ended up with my hands on the bonnet - that's how close it was.
From that point on, I said to myself "Right. I'm going to cross BEHIND the bus from now on." That's never changed.
At no time did it ever ONCE cross my mind, that the driver was in any way at fault for his (or her - I've always assumed it was a man) actions.
To have expectations of other road users is *extremely* foolish under any circumstances.
One further other reason for this, is the possibility of manufacturer error of the vehicles themselves.
A documentary on TH-cam called "The Quality Connection", produced by British Leyland, shows the types of accidents that can occur anywhere in the construction process if a car.
Attributing "blame" for something entirely unpreventable is an element I suspect you're not really prepared to contend with.
This is why being responsible for one's own actions is crucial.
I imagine countries such as Japan are even more adherent to pedestrian responsibility.
The idea of "blame" simply isn't something I concern myself with - genuine common sense on the other hand...

Sometimes it’s longer, it really depends how long it takes for kids to get on or off the bus, in some states you have to wait for the bus to resume motion so it could be 1 to 2 minutes in some cases. I don’t illegally pass stopped school buses and don’t think it’s ok to do so but for me I would be annoyed if I had to stop because I wouldn’t want to have stop from going 35 to 40 (or however fast I’m going) when I’m not even in the intersection, especially if I’m on the other side on a road with 4 or more lanes

    • @MsKPOPLOVEABLE
      @MsKPOPLOVEABLE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +112

@@thevarietykid686 I know it can be longer, I wasn't using 5 seconds as the exact time limit for all bus stops like that. My point is that there's no reason for you to be passing a bus like that especially when they have their sign up. From what I know most buses have a set schedule so most people tend to know roughly when a bus is going to be somewhere. So I feel like you should either leave earlier or look for another way around. Those people are putting a child's life in danger and in the case some children have lost their lives because of people like that, but I do get what you're saying though.

This infuriates so much because there is just TOO MANY drivers like this not just near schools, but at stoplights and stop intersections. I walk to my part time job since it’s close by and almost every time I cross the street at a stoplight and im halfway there, there’s always a car that makes a turn hoping they can go by before I finish crossing. I’ve had a handful of times where a car passes and i’m literally a foot away from it and could possibly get hit with the side mirrors in the face. This is unacceptable. Many years ago, I was driving a fully loaded 3/4 ton truck down a VERY steep hill. I was geared down and only going about 25 mph. I came around the corner and just KNEW the bus was going to stop and let kids off. Sure enough, the sign came out and lights started flashing. This was WAY before anti-lock brakes and all four wheels were locked was I tried to stop and laid on the horn. I remember being so scared I would hit a kid. I was looking for where to put the truck (the ditch was starting to look very good) when the driver retracted the sign and waved me through. I stopped anyway, with about 10 feet to spare. And then waited for the kids to cross. The driver yelled through he window "Nice stop. That had both of us cringing...". I still cannot believe how many people just do not care. Drivers are trained to spot these conditions and hold the kids back. They have a tough job, we do not have to make it more difficult. This driver was on top of things. Totally awesome.

We didn't stop traffic at random locations and half heartedly attempt to create a safe crossing zone in between the actual designated crosswalks that typically have traffic slowing for stop signs, stop lights, other vehicles, ect.... no we force children to cross in the open traveling zones of the roads.

A few years ago, I drove through a red traffic light.
Because I've been driving for decades, questioned the logic of obeying things that don't immediately present themselves as common[ly comprehendible] sense, I'd eventually become disillusioned with the prospect of "tightening myself up physiologically" to obey the lights on this occasion, and just drove through it, scanning the road for hazards.
Had I been witnessed doing that, I suppose a fine/endorsement would've been issued, and maybe a court summons would've followed.
Now, as somebody who's also been an advanced motorist with a clean lie-sense (licence) for almost as long as my whole motoring career, surely something should've triggered an inclination to stop, should it not??
      But it didn't.
My physiology was no longer prepared to tolerate doing something which simply didn't make sense, and that's why I went through the lights - self preservation.
No other reason at all whatsoever.
No emergency, no dangerous tailgater, no mechanical fault - nothing.
Similarly with your situation (though not fundamentally identical), provision perhaps hadn't been made for the possibility of inadvertent ""rule"" breaking on your behalf.
Therefore, it is for *_them_* - from their own end - to learn how to cross the road, *SAFELY.* 😠
Your reaction - were the same thing to happen in the UK - might be... bizarre, if people didn't understand things from your point of view.
America possibly has the most *insidious* "system" of road safety for pedestrians of any country in the world.
On the one hand, they're told not to "J" walk, yet on the other, they're encouraged to cross the road directly *in front* of a 9 feet tall bus?!?!
Your reaction is COMPLETELY misplaced going by how you've described it.
Common sense is essentially absent from peoples' thinking when it comes to interacting with what's directly outside their own front doors.
      Incredible, really.

They should give tickets because guess what human life especially a child’s is more important that someone getting penalize for doing something they are not supposed to do. So if there’s soMe thing that’s works better love to hear it because clearly the stop signs aren’t working. Wondering why someone would say that unless they themselves do it. @Lster S but in my country every driver always slow down when see school bus stop at roadside because we know students sure will go across the road. we never had any accidents like what happen in us. In my whole life i only saw only 2 case in news. if accident like what happen is us everytime in my country the driver will pay a price for it. Up to 15 years jail sentences, fined and revoked the license for life.

@Lster S you must be a driver shown in the video then lmao. There’s a literal stop sign on the bus...every car should be stopping. That’s why kids just get on/off the bus quickly without looking sometimes because it’s assumed that cars stop for the bus. Even if the kids look both ways, it’s possible a car could still go by🤦‍♀️. And not all buses stop beside the sidewalk, I’ve seen kids crossing the street. You see cars yielding for pedestrians going across the street, it’s the same thing for a bus with LITTLE KIDS, except there’s a literal stop sign. If you wanna risk killing KIDS then that’s on you 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦‍♀️I hope you ain’t driving around with that thought.

I love people like you 😭 I work in a school transportation (various jobs there) and I often hear of tales of police learning routes of buses (especially with stops where a lot of kids get off) and staying close by to catch those who run the light.
It’s not a big town here but we sadly do get runners a lot but those policemen do love writing tickets for those who truly deserve it!

Stop arm should be about 20’ long with flashing lights and larger stop sign. The longer arm could fold down the side of the bus and hinge out.
