      One wonderful thing if your book is successful and sells lots of copies is that companies might offer to do the work of publishing for you and give you a forward. That would cut down on the effort.
      The other side of that is they might expect you to go on book signings. Terry Pratchett produced an interesting book that includes something on that. Take lots of ice and painkilling ointment.

    The nice thing about selling translation rights to publish translations is that it isn't your problem. If traditional publishers in other languages think it will sell well in their language, they will come to you to buy those rights and the advertising and translation costs for the book in that language comes out of their pocket. If they're wrong, that their problem and not yours.

    I agree that fighting 1 horse-sized duck would be preferable to fighting 100 duck-sized horses, however, having been up close and personal with a pet duck, I confess that the prospect of facing a giant, aggressive one is...a little terrifying. Something to be said about publishing your 2nd book...
    Half the trouble of snagging a publisher (without them taking all possible profits) is proving that you know how to write a book that sells. So by doing all of the work yourself on the first book, and assuming you get good sales (and why wouldn't you?!?), then you will be able to go to a publisher, show them your numbers, and actually get decent terms and rates. So by doing all the leg work yourself on the first book you will be positioned nicely to NEVER HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN. And that is a positive to look forward to if you ever do make a 2nd book.

    I'm quite excited. I stumbled upon the long form one woman show version a little over an hour ago, and as the child of an author and avid reader, found it first hilarious, then gripping!
    I proceeded to explore your channel a little. In addition to helping my mom both traditionally publish, and self publish a few books, my brother is a lifelong medieval reenactor, my sister the costume maker, just joined a sword-fight performance group, and most mind blowing of all to me, I have CFS too!
    I dont normally message random internet peopel and say "Hey look how many ways our life experiences intersect!" but there it is.
    I am so impressed that you have been able to have a family, a youtube career, an expertise, and write and self publish a book. (I did a book selling Facebook event once, and that 2 hours landed me in bed for two weeks, lol!) I'm so happy for you, may your launch be a grande success 🎉

    As someone who plans to publish someday, thank you for going through the nitty-gritty of who you hired, what they did, and what it cost. Figuring out what that process should look like is A Process ™ all by itself, and I appreciate getting a look inside the ugly bits.

    First of all:
    Jill, you are amazing!
    Thank you so much for doing this for us!
    And for doing it in such a short amount of time!!
    Second, please take care of yourself. Don't burn yourself out doing things your fans think they want. What we want is _you_. Your creativity, your spark, your wry sense of humor. We love the idea of having all of this in a book we can read over and over, but in the end, if we have to choose between No-Book-but-Happy-Alive-Jill and Book-but-Tired/Dead-Jill, we would much rather have you alive ❤
    Hardback & Audiobook: I feel like the progression I've seen with other Indie authors is: ebook; 2-6 months later, paperback; 2-6 months after that, audiobook; fancy-schmancy hardcover last.
    By which I mean:
    If you need to take a break for a couple of months after the paperback release before you tackle anything else, please do that. We would much rather have you alive, functioning, and in one piece!!!

    YES, that's the way to go. Concrats to the bestseller! When I selfpublished my first book everything went wrong. And people asked me why are you so relaxed. Cause honestly I expected it. I told them it's a trial book. So what ever happens happens. Better now than if it really matters to me. AMAZON will probably mess up literally anything they can. My book got published as ebook was live 30 minutes and then vanished entirely from the site only to surface 24 h later and the support couldn't explain it. It was never gone according to them. No worries, what ever will go wrong all be allright in the end.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The intermittent book sounds like typical cloud issues - server A gets the book immediately, but server B has to copy it across from server A, and some way down the list, server N only learns the book exists when it updates from server K. So which server you get directed to will determine whether you see the book yet or not. And then an intermediate relay decides that its seeing a lot of requests for that particular page, so, rather than creating all that additional traffic requesting the same page again and again, it simply caches a copy of whichever version it happens to be pointed at at the time...
      Basically, the book is on some parts of the system, but it takes time for that information to get updated across the entire system, and potentially even more time for all the outdated copies scattered across the internet to get replaced. The idea is that everything will be right once it settles down, so it's okay for things to be a bit weird in the short term.

    One duck sized horse is going to be a serious opponent for a human. It can walk, it can swim, it can fly, there is no getting away from it! That beak is going to inflict some serious damage and it might be able to swallow a smallish human whole.
    One hundred duck sized horses on the other hand will be able to inflict minimal damage through kicks, you can avoid them by ... stepping up on a chair. And they should be easily dispatched one at a time with your swords.

    As far as translation goes I would seriously keep the most common languages (of your audience) on the table spanish French, Italian, etc. When it comes to [chinese] Kanji while each dialect is vocally different the written words/symbols are mostly universal. Bringing Mandarin, Cantonese, Hmoung, as well as other asian/oriental regions/countries under one written language umbrella.

      Ah, interesting 😊 Thanks!

    • @screwtape2713
      @screwtape2713 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JillBearup Usually, the idea behind ARCs is that they perform functions intended to benefit the publisher: 1. a group of final proofreaders to catch any last typos; 2. a test audience to a provide last chance to find and fix any gaping plotholes or other problems with the book before it's too late and the book is in general circulation with readers hating it (sort of like test screening a movie or the old theatre tradition of the play or musical playing in small cities before the big London or Broadway opening); and 3. a group of early readers to do pre-release reviews to get the word out and help hype the book on the reader review sites.
      Frankly, I don't think you need any of that.
      Otherwise, ARCs are mainly used to bring in a bit of early cash (by selling them often at a premium for the chance to read early -- Baen Books, for example, sells eArcs for U$15 about six months before the books come out as about $7 ebooks.) Or as contest prizes on author websites and so forth.
      The rest as DanMackison said is mostly people scrounging free books...
