Thumbs up for promoting paid apps and utilities in Linux. Open source is necessary for specific cases but also is necessary to pay developers for professional development.
The ability to archive bottles and share bottles between applications is very powerful. I don't use crossover, but I could definitely see its use case in offices.
It would be great to have an application like Lutris or Crossover that don't just let you run stuff through wine, but perhaps also console emulators, where on one machine you can be running Linux apps, Windows apps, Android, NES, PS3, etc. Each accessible through your normal apps list and each easily installable.
afaik lutris does let you install emulators. Unfortunately I never managed to run lutris effectively on mint, always gave me some problem, I am quite bummed about that but hey it's free...
I think buying crosover is a good way to support Wine because it benefits the whole Linux world that uses Wine. The price is a bit high but for those who want to work on Linux safely and use Windows programs in Linux, crosover is the best solution "Anyway Wine is free" in my opinion it is worth giving some support.

This is extremely good for companies who only use quick books and MS office(and similar programs) and want to switch to Linux and not pay the licensing fees.
Crossover seems much more Mac-centred. Linux users are better of manually using Wine with scripts, but most scripts will have a problem running those scripts (for example because macOS doesn’t include Vulkan). Crossover is an essential part of Wine for Mac’s development, without it there would be no wine for macOS 10.15+. For a long time Linux was an afterthought, which shows in advertising. On Mac, for most software, it’s either manual setup or crossover, there are no scripts for Mac available. And as it can be safely assumed that Mac users are on average less advanced than Linux users a solution like this is great for them.
In regards to Office (and other MS products), it looks like there may be a chance they will come to Linux. They have spent a lot of effort on cross-platform recently. VsCode, Teams and now Edge. Now there is news that Outlook is going Electron. No mention of Linux, but I assume it will come - and maybe a possibility the rest of Office coming to Linux. This is quite a big deal for individuals or companies that rely and need MS products.
Pleaze yes. I'm trying Crossover at present to install MS Office. Office 20210 installs and seems to run OK but Outlook will not log in to exchange server. Office 2016 installs but won't run properly, Office 365 starts off Ok but then says I need a later version of Windows and suggests Windows 10 so I guess Crossover emulates something like Win 7. If MS did port to Linux I'd go in a heart beat but I need Outlook with Exchange Server support. I know Thunderbird does it with a OWL license but it's not as good.
I use CrossOver on Mac...and when I need an application that isn't listed, I just select the "Unlisted Application" option in the Select Application section, then you can just select the installer yourself. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I thought it was worth mentioning (based on your example of iTunes, it might not be listed but might still be installable through this process)
Back in college Codeweavers ran a promotion and gave away copies of CrossOver. At the time i was trying to stick with Linux on a janky Acer laptop but needed to install AutoCAD but Wine was a nightmare back then. CrossOver was easier to install but getting CAD working was still a no go. I think the company is focused on business use though i think they've fallen short.
I have seen some videos by a professional engineer here on TH-cam, with experience of SolidWorks, test FreeCAD and find it pretty much equivalent in functionality and robustness, to the point where he has used it in actual jobs.
Codeweavers makes proton as well? Valve pays them to do that. Codeweavers is quite possibility one of the most important companies making Linux relevant for many people. Supporting Codeweavers is what makes Wine possible. You think Steam's Proton runs stuff well? That is because Valve is paying Codeweavers, who in turn can pay developers. O365 is good enough for most people and if that's good enough for you, libre office is probably good enough. If you absolutely need office a window vm makes sense if you want to go down that road.

I guess there's just no hope having Affinity on Linux. Not sure why the developers don't give a crap about it when they could have the whole Linux platform basically for themselves. The open source tools are nice but I wouldn't mind paying for something that's just nicer to use. For example nowadays I'm using gravit designer instead of inkscape because for me as a non-professional user it's just much more approachable and still has all the features I'll ever need. The Affinity guys could just do it like the Reaper developers, who don't sell their software for Linux but make it run well via Wine, so people can use it and the developers don't need to offer support.
WINE is free and open source. Crossover just gives tech support. Fine if you want to contribute to WINE development but not necessary. Anyone with the ability to install and work with Linux can use it.

The example made about the epic launcher in my opinion hilights a big problem we have in the Linux community, fragmentation. We are a lot, a lot of people, coders and minds in general are involved in this big mega project that is Linux in its entirety but everyone works on his slightly different little project, this is awesome on one side, the freedom to express yourself trough your project, I feel it near to my heart as a coder myself, but on the other side makes everything more slow, less optimal and not as good as it could be, to be onest the more similar projects merge the faster they will go
I used to try cross-over many years ago before lutris or play on Linux was released. But nowadays I can even run Google sketchup and my 3d printer slicing software on lutris. I'm happy enough with lutris. One more thing.. The Linux is bigger then ever because it's open source and I think a paid option of wine like cross-over never would be big as lutris.

I have hard time being interested before there is a dual-boot level performance for not just office (as many workplaces mandate it), but also for stuff like photoshop, adobe media-encoder, bridge, premiere pro and creative cloud. Gaming on Linux is great. But to pay for active support and development for software used for work, there needs to be a level of performance suitable for work - and currently there is no such offering. Many of these projects and services seem to struggle not only because that is a steep wall to conquer, but because they don't start with ideology that even attempts. Maybe they underestimate how invasive or time consuming their software can be, as they compete with the existing products, instead of windows as dual-boot solution directly. But in reality, that is the opponent they face. For users, the question is not if one or two applications are usable and supported, if the interface is nice and if opening the first software is fast, it is if they can uninstall windows and have an environment they can work in, at the level their job requires. So I would be more happy with dual-booting to cross-over, or opening up a more costly environment that makes it impossible to reach the software running on Linux, as long as I can efficiently use web-browser, ms office, and Adobes full software profile; along with software large industries and hence most workers rely on. The competition is not wine; it's windows and macOS. And until the software addresses that need, these projects are greatly limited in users and consumers.
Nah I'm fine with OnlyOffice, LibreOffice and LaTeX. I wish there was more focus on productivity apps like Adobe CC, Affinity and all that stuff. How is it that like 80% of Windows games work fine in Wine, but pretty much no video editor, photo editing program or similar creative applications work?
@gilkesisking I am fully aware that many creative applications are native to Linux. I only said that very few creative apps work through Wine. And unfortunately The Adobe Creative Cloud is an extremely popular set of creative apps, which are neither native nor do they work in Wine (for the most part)

I used CrossOver briefly right after it first came out, many moon ago. At that time, I was using wine built from source. I was happy to get Internet Explorer 6 to run and maybe a couple of other applications. That was back in my "Slackware days". lol I've been meaning to give wine another shot, to see how it's improved, of the years, but just haven't had the time and computer resources to do it. *sigh* Thanks for posting!
For iTunes you need to install a custom exe and not using a preconfigured script - just like lutris or playonlinux... When you buy a crossover license you have a great piece of software and encourage future development for more compatibility.
I'd happily pay to run Visual Studio. It's the only thing currently preventing me from switching to Linux as a daily driver. I believe it's highly coupled to the MS ecosystem, so I don't expect it happening anytime soon. A comparable IDE that ran natively could possibly work for me. But I haven't found any so far.
I was subscribe crossover several years ago for office and work stuff that I need to run on Linux.. And since I don't use office anymore, it is been 3-4 years I hadn't install crossover or even wine.. Many games on steam work with proton too..
Where did the myth that Linux costs less to run than windows start? As is evident my the many towns to try switching to Linux then return to Windows find out the hard way, the admin overhead and support needed for Linux is massively higher than Windows. I use Linux at home, but it would be a F'ing nightmare if I had to support Linux in the office.
I think you are not paying attention as to what VERSION of the Apps can run, the fact that says you can run iTunes, doesn´t mean ALL versions of iTunes or Office, For me it is worth paying because I can run really good apps I need that are not too popular, also to help the developers.
That's nice and all, but at the end of the day CrossOver allows me - the n00b Linux user - to get M$ software up and running hassle free. I really can't understand people who keep on saying that Lutris or PlayOnLinux or Wine is the way to go, I was NEVER able to get my Office 365 to work - no matter how many tutorials I read and tried to understand. I was never able to get past the technical aspect of it and get a simple "one click" solution. I'd be more than happy if you'd do a top to bottom tutorial on how to setup an M$ office 365 using any other software:/
It's the same situation with Zorin OS pro and Zorin OS core. You can download crossover and build it yourself, or you can buy for 20 bucks, which is not a huge amount.
No, it's not enough to justify paying for Wine. MS Office can be run on any wine manager, or through wine itself directly. But what I think IS enough to justify is the fact that codeweavers gives back the majority of their code to the wine project, so you paying for Crossover funds the wine project which benefits everyone that uses wine, no matter what wine manager they use. That said, personally I don't see why people would need MS Office. LibreOffice and other programs can read MS Office files, so compatibility should be there without the ton-weight that is MS Office.
Much of the time Wine simply does not work. This is why its so imperative the high-end distros come with Virtualbox preconfigured to run Windows 95, 98SE & XP.
Office 2010 seems to run very well compared to the other versions, I once installed it with plain old PlayOnLinux and it just worked. It did have small input delays sometimes and rare crashes, but not to a degree that bothered me.
I personally use Linux for Play / lab testing environment (IE vmware), and Windows for work. Given that most of what I'd want to use this for would be getting games to work that don't, would they support that or do you not know?
I thought that one of the reasons you'd want crossover is because they've got their own special sauce of wine with special hacks that make the applications run? Hacks that wouldn't be fit for upstream wine but are needed for programs like microsoft office to run?

I tried wine to run a few things. It was too slow, and needed a lot of third party stuff, and an application lutris to make a lot of things work. in the end a 3gb program I was trying to run cost me 9 gigs of space, and it didn't run well. I deleted it all. I wouldn't pay for something like this.
Long time listener, but first time posting. I have purchased Crossover is past and vowed not to do it again. Short version of the long story, it just didn't work well for me and offered no advantage over Play on Linux or plain old Win.
I don’t understand why MS Office is noticeably slow on Wine/Crossover when so many demanding games run perfectly through Proton (which is just wine with DXVK).
Try disabling visual effects in MS Office and Graphic Acceleration. In my old computer, Office 2010 is huge faster than newer versions on Crossover (on a Ubuntu Mate)

Wine doesn't work on my Linux Mint 20 Ulyana with MATE desktop/Compiz. Not a real issue to me since I don't use MS-Windows programs. For other users, why bother buying a commercial version of Wine then ? Some special games perhaps ?

It didn't succeed to install MS-office Pro 2010 (installation stopped half-way through). I suppose as Nick said the successfull procedure depends on the MS program we want to install and execute. Or I had depency conflicts as I am not sure I removed all packets from a previous installation of Wine. WineHQ is pretty heavy, I remember having got rid of about 2 Gb of files.
Personally I find the fact you do not get updates (or updates for only one year) somewhat annoying. Personally I'd rather pay a little more (like ~35$) for lifetime of updates. Add a small fees for certain software that were a pain to port, maybe?. Idk

Came to and issue with the latest O365 in that during the install it says I need a later version of Windows and suggest Win 10. Guess Crossover emulates Win 7 that is no longer supported on new Office install.

I am still looking to get the "Windows7 games for windows 10" package to run on Linux (to convince some people ro run Linux). Has anyone succeded with that? I can run it but it has no menues etc. Also it is not listed on Crossover, unfortunately.
If i ever need office for something ill probably go to libreoffice, then to office from the web if neccesary, im trying to save up and do not think having office in Linux with an extra fee is worth it for me, dunno for anyone else. On another note, Wine is really good on some old laptop i had from 2006, which i installed ubuntu. Not as good in old intel celerons tho, even if the system says its 64 bits, some programs wont work with it.
Its really sad, I got office 365 working until September. UNDER NORMAL WINE... But after the office update that axed win 7 support it stopped working. Anyone who wants to do this you can have some luck by using 2013 then updating to 2019 though that takes a lot of time and is a bit hit or miss
I don't care about MS Office, the alternatives like Libre Office and WPS are good enough. BUT the Software that I actually would like to use on Wine/Crossover just won't work. FL Studio gets pretty unstable and limited in its abilities, and the Affinity suite won't even install at all. So at this point, it's a no for me. It doesn't solve my problem, so I won't pay for it. Unfortunately, the available alternatives on Linux are nowhere near Affinity or FL Studio, so I stay locked in a dual-boot.
@Davi Carneirp I have and didn’t like it. My work world is almost exclusively Windows related and some online databases (MS Dynamics, some Oracle, and a lot of SQL server/Sharepoint connections). I found Base severely lacking in connectivity. Could be my lack of knowledge (and time to get stuff done) though.
I wonder if TruckersMP will work on that platform, as all my games run through steam, but the multiplayer for Euro truck sim 2 and American truck sim is a separated install and have always failed on wine

LibreOffice and / or Calligra work just fine on my Linux distros. I guess someone who's "trapped" into having to use Microsoft's applications might get some use out of this, but for me? Nah...I can think of a lot of better things to use my time and money for. And yeah...I know the ones who will insist that they can "game" on their PC's / laptops..and that most Linux distros don't execute gaming well? But I play games on my console...and not my PC / laptops...so.....no.
I would expect a paid software to be simple and reliable. It doesn't seem like it is reliable since the main purpose of installing Windows apps is not great.
Yeah CrossOver does promise email and phone support for customers, but I can't imagine that helpful if they simply cannot support a particular program one wants/needs to run.

Have you tried starting a PowerPoint presentation? If so, did it work (i.e. full screen presentation on one screen, notes on the other) ?
I didn’t, but you can try it with the free trial! I’d expect it to work fine, though, PowerPoint worked well for what I tried with it.
I had the exact same question, because there are not any satisfying alternatives to MS office yet and wine does not manage the dual screen for now...

The example made about the epic launcher in my opinion hilights a big problem we have in the Linux community, fragmentation. We are a lot, a lot of people, coders and minds in general are involved in this big mega project that is Linux in its entirety but everyone works on his slightly different little project, this is awesome on one side, the freedom to express yourself trough your project, I feel it near to my heart as a coder myself, but on the other side makes everything more slow, less optimal and not as good as it could be, to be onest the more similar projects merge the faster they will go
I used to try cross-over many years ago before lutris or play on Linux was released. But nowadays I can even run Google sketchup and my 3d printer slicing software on lutris. I'm happy enough with lutris. One more thing.. The Linux is bigger then ever because it's open source and I think a paid option of wine like cross-over never would be big as lutris.

I have hard time being interested before there is a dual-boot level performance for not just office (as many workplaces mandate it), but also for stuff like photoshop, adobe media-encoder, bridge, premiere pro and creative cloud.
Gaming on Linux is great. But to pay for active support and development for software used for work, there needs to be a level of performance suitable for work - and currently there is no such offering.
Many of these projects and services seem to struggle not only because that is a steep wall to conquer, but because they don't start with ideology that even attempts. Maybe they underestimate how invasive or time consuming their software can be, as they compete with the existing products, instead of windows as dual-boot solution directly.
But in reality, that is the opponent they face. For users, the question is not if one or two applications are usable and supported, if the interface is nice and if opening the first software is fast, it is if they can uninstall windows and have an environment they can work in, at the level their job requires.
So I would be more happy with dual-booting to cross-over, or opening up a more costly environment that makes it impossible to reach the software running on Linux, as long as I can efficiently use web-browser, ms office, and Adobes full software profile; along with software large industries and hence most workers rely on. The competition is not wine; it's windows and macOS. And until the software addresses that need, these projects are greatly limited in users and consumers.
Nah I'm fine with OnlyOffice, LibreOffice and LaTeX.
I wish there was more focus on productivity apps like Adobe CC, Affinity and all that stuff. How is it that like 80% of Windows games work fine in Wine, but pretty much no video editor, photo editing program or similar creative applications work?
@gilkesisking I am fully aware that many creative applications are native to Linux. I only said that very few creative apps work through Wine. And unfortunately The Adobe Creative Cloud is an extremely popular set of creative apps, which are neither native nor do they work in Wine (for the most part)
@gilkesisking I wouldn't expect a native version from either Adobe or Affinity but it baffles me why neither one works in Wine and it doesn't seem like there are many efforts to make them work, even though I'm sure there would be a lot of potential interest.
I used CrossOver briefly right after it first came out, many moon ago. At that time, I was using wine built from source. I was happy to get Internet Explorer 6 to run and maybe a couple of other applications. That was back in my "Slackware days". lol I've been meaning to give wine another shot, to see how it's improved, of the years, but just haven't had the time and computer resources to do it. *sigh* Thanks for posting!
I bought Crossover, I am pretty happy with it but also keeping an eye on bottles. So far Crossover has worked more consistently for me though.

For iTunes you need to install a custom exe and not using a preconfigured script - just like lutris or playonlinux... When you buy a crossover license you have a great piece of software and encourage future development for more compatibility.
why not donate to wine directly, instead of this?!
You do get customer support, however valuable that may or may not be.
I'd happily pay to run Visual Studio. It's the only thing currently preventing me from switching to Linux as a daily driver. I believe it's highly coupled to the MS ecosystem, so I don't expect it happening anytime soon.
A comparable IDE that ran natively could possibly work for me. But I haven't found any so far.

I was subscribe crossover several years ago for office and work stuff that I need to run on Linux.. And since I don't use office anymore, it is been 3-4 years I hadn't install crossover or even wine.. Many games on steam work with proton too..
I used to install POL + wine and crossover. There is no gain in use crossover....Just to compensate the good Job of wine's developers

As is evident my the many towns to try switching to Linux then return to Windows find out the hard way, the admin overhead and support needed for Linux is massively higher than Windows.
I use Linux at home, but it would be a F'ing nightmare if I had to support Linux in the office.

I think you are not paying attention as to what VERSION of the Apps can run, the fact that says you can run iTunes, doesn´t mean ALL versions of iTunes or Office,
For me it is worth paying because I can run really good apps I need that are not too popular, also
to help the developers.
I feel like a portion of people who need the Office suite would be fine using the 365 suite.
That's nice and all, but at the end of the day CrossOver allows me - the n00b Linux user - to get M$ software up and running hassle free.
I really can't understand people who keep on saying that Lutris or PlayOnLinux or Wine is the way to go, I was NEVER able to get my Office 365 to work - no matter how many tutorials I read and tried to understand. I was never able to get past the technical aspect of it and get a simple "one click" solution.
I'd be more than happy if you'd do a top to bottom tutorial on how to setup an M$ office 365 using any other software:/
It's the same situation with Zorin OS pro and Zorin OS core. You can download crossover and build it yourself, or you can buy for 20 bucks, which is not a huge amount.
I find it to be secondary problem that it doesn't list programs. Real question is if you can download the installer and run it.
No, it's not enough to justify paying for Wine. MS Office can be run on any wine manager, or through wine itself directly.
But what I think IS enough to justify is the fact that codeweavers gives back the majority of their code to the wine project, so you paying for Crossover funds the wine project which benefits everyone that uses wine, no matter what wine manager they use.
That said, personally I don't see why people would need MS Office. LibreOffice and other programs can read MS Office files, so compatibility should be there without the ton-weight that is MS Office.

Much of the time Wine simply does not work. This is why its so imperative the high-end distros come with Virtualbox preconfigured to run Windows 95, 98SE & XP.

The older versions of Office tend to run better. While Office 365 runs well, whereas Office 2010 is five star.
Office 2010 seems to run very well compared to the other versions, I once installed it with plain old PlayOnLinux and it just worked. It did have small input delays sometimes and rare crashes, but not to a degree that bothered me.
CrossOver Is Not an Emulator
I personally use Linux for Play / lab testing environment (IE vmware), and Windows for work. Given that most of what I'd want to use this for would be getting games to work that don't, would they support that or do you not know?

I thought that one of the reasons you'd want crossover is because they've got their own special sauce of wine with special hacks that make the applications run? Hacks that wouldn't be fit for upstream wine but are needed for programs like microsoft office to run?
Definitely I would pay for Crossover because of what they have done with during for all us.

That CrossOver project will not be around for more than 10 years, I bet. Costs way too much. Try it free for 2 weeks first.

I tried wine to run a few things. It was too slow, and needed a lot of third party stuff, and an application lutris to make a lot of things work. in the end a 3gb program I was trying to run cost me 9 gigs of space, and it didn't run well. I deleted it all. I wouldn't pay for something like this.

Long time listener, but first time posting. I have purchased Crossover is past and vowed not to do it again. Short version of the long story, it just didn't work well for me and offered no advantage over Play on Linux or plain old Win.
I don’t understand why MS Office is noticeably slow on Wine/Crossover when so many demanding games run perfectly through Proton (which is just wine with DXVK).

Try disabling visual effects in MS Office and Graphic Acceleration. In my old computer, Office 2010 is huge faster than newer versions on Crossover (on a Ubuntu Mate)

Wine doesn't work on my Linux Mint 20 Ulyana with MATE desktop/Compiz. Not a real issue to me since I don't use MS-Windows programs. For other users, why bother buying a commercial version of Wine then ? Some special games perhaps ?

@@Mathias-bz2kr Thanks Qcean for the advice. I used the following procedure to install WineHQ on Linux Mint 20x : wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu. It didn't succeed to install MS-office Pro 2010 (installation stopped half-way through). I suppose as Nick said the successfull procedure depends on the MS program we want to install and execute. Or I had depency conflicts as I am not sure I removed all packets from a previous installation of Wine. WineHQ is pretty heavy, I remember having got rid of about 2 Gb of files.
Personally I find the fact you do not get updates (or updates for only one year) somewhat annoying. Personally I'd rather pay a little more (like ~35$) for lifetime of updates. Add a small fees for certain software that were a pain to port, maybe?. Idk

Thanx for the excellent video. I learned a lot today. I went and downloaded CrossOver and tried several Office installs. Came to and issue with the latest O365 in that during the install it says I need a later version of Windows and suggest Win 10. Guess Crossover emulates Win 7 that is no longer supported on new Office install.
crossover is not an implementation, but rather a wrapper around wine

I am still looking to get the "Windows7 games for windows 10" package to run on Linux (to convince some people ro run Linux). Has anyone succeded with that? I can run it but it has no menues etc. Also it is not listed on Crossover, unfortunately.
If i ever need office for something ill probably go to libreoffice, then to office from the web if neccesary, im trying to save up and do not think having office in Linux with an extra fee is worth it for me, dunno for anyone else.
On another note, Wine is really good on some old laptop i had from 2006, which i installed ubuntu.
Not as good in old intel celerons tho, even if the system says its 64 bits, some programs wont work with it.
Its really sad, I got office 365 working until September. UNDER NORMAL WINE... But after the office update that axed win 7 support it stopped working. Anyone who wants to do this you can have some luck by using 2013 then updating to 2019 though that takes a lot of time and is a bit hit or miss

I don't care about MS Office, the alternatives like Libre Office and WPS are good enough. BUT the Software that I actually would like to use on Wine/Crossover just won't work. FL Studio gets pretty unstable and limited in its abilities, and the Affinity suite won't even install at all. So at this point, it's a no for me. It doesn't solve my problem, so I won't pay for it. Unfortunately, the available alternatives on Linux are nowhere near Affinity or FL Studio, so I stay locked in a dual-boot.

@Davi Carneirp I have and didn’t like it. My work world is almost exclusively Windows related and some online databases (MS Dynamics, some Oracle, and a lot of SQL server/Sharepoint connections). I found Base severely lacking in connectivity. Could be my lack of knowledge (and time to get stuff done) though.

Not necessarily anymore, but they still don’t have any inclination to port their apps though.
How the hell did you get office 365 to install!? Even getting the installer inside of Linux is a pain, MS hides the downloader.
Well, that’s the advantage of Crossover :) I just switched user agents in the browser to download the installer, and Crossover did the rest!

I wonder if TruckersMP will work on that platform, as all my games run through steam, but the multiplayer for Euro truck sim 2 and American truck sim is a separated install and have always failed on wine
Meh. I don't think this is worth paying for. And since I don't use Office, or any OTHER Microsoft application? This would be a big waste of my time and money. LibreOffice and / or Calligra work just fine on my Linux distros. I guess someone who's "trapped" into having to use Microsoft's applications might get some use out of this, but for me? Nah...I can think of a lot of better things to use my time and money for. And yeah...I know the ones who will insist that they can "game" on their PC's / laptops..and that most Linux distros don't execute gaming well? But I play games on my console...and not my PC / laptops...so.....no.

I would expect a paid software to be simple and reliable. It doesn't seem like it is reliable since the main purpose of installing Windows apps is not great.
Yeah CrossOver does promise email and phone support for customers, but I can't imagine that helpful if they simply cannot support a particular program one wants/needs to run.
